Interesting, this emerging segment of Adventure Elopements and finding ways to frame your pricing vis a vis traditional weddings. It reminds me of the 70s when railways were dying until they realized that they were segmenting their market too narrowly. They weren’t just railways but actually part of the larger travel segment which included airlines and buses and that to survive they had to develop services and pricing that allowed them to compete. In this case, elopements are part of the overall wedding market and really have to compete for a finite segment of good photographers. Whether a full wedding or a “quick” elopement, what you’re delivering are excellent images of a once in a lifetime event and so they should be priced accordingly.
Not to belabor the point but my marketing prof always said, “Don’t sell drillbits (traditional weddings vs elopement), market perfectly round and smooth holes (unforgettable memories on film).” :-)
