Winter is over here in the Midwest. Sure, it's still cold (it went down to 20F this last night), but the white and snowy landscapes are gone for good, I'm afraid.
I had a lot of fun shooting here during snowstorms, hiking through the ice, and looking for minimalistic images driving on secondary roads in the countryside.
This place has inspired me and I believe helped me a lot to improve my photography. This is not the West where you can have a big vista within a 10-minute drive. You have to work to create an image, and be more creative.
In this video, I drove to Michigan City at the shore of Lake Michigan in an attempt to capture the last of winter. If found heavenly conditions for photography and I made some of my favorite images here.
It's been fun, Indiana.

Vlogging about photography (mostly landscape) and all kind of camera gear, digital and analog.
Watching 4 years after posting. I just purchased your signature photo. Absolutely love the photo, and now I know the back story - self doubt! This is a powerful lesson. The times we shoot and doubt, but enjoy the process, are often producing surprising results. I have your photo sitting on my desk where I do my photo editing. It is a powerful reminder of an effective image: simplicity, subtlety, and mystery. Thanks for persisting in your photo journey, and taking us along.
I'm watching your videos, from the very first, and have just finished this one. Salamonie State Park is only about 12 minutes from my home. It is a great location for photography. You are right about the lack of wide vistas, and how that can hone ones photography skills. Indiana has many such locations. I love your work, and your commentary in your videos.
Great video, the images are superb in this video.
Beautiful photos. You’ve got a great eye.
Thank you, Dominic!
Wonderful photographs from an extraordinary landscape - really inspiring
I enjoy and look forward to your videos. They are inspiring so please keep up the great work!
Watching you with your dog remind me of myself about 10 years ago before I had kids, and I had three dogs. We used to head out together, with my camera. The last of them died in 2012 around the time I had my second child. Seems a long time ago now, but also only like yesterday. Enjoy your trips out with your dog; special times.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, I'm sure they were good times out there with the puppies. I try to bring her along as much as I can, but it's not always possible. Thank you so much for sharing that.
Hi! This is my favourite video ... Well, I still have a lot to watch but this one touch me very deep!! Thank you for sharing and un abrazo desde España ;-) Antonio
I love your editing, choice of music, poetry of the shots. I am like you, my favorite is fog and rain. I love it in the mountains in the rainforest, especially in mountains when I am inside the clouds, the damp dripping from the trees, the way the forest becomes layered with trees melting into the mistiness. The etherealness that fogs bring is made for the camera.
Thank you, and subscribed.
Thank you so much! I am really glad you liked it, it was an awesome day.
Beautiful video!
This was brilliant. 👍🏼
Thank you!
I *love* the shot with the powerlines at 3:04. As always, beautiful work.
Thank you, Moishe! I'd been looking for an image like that for weeks. It's not easy to find the right spot, most of the time is hard or impossible to stop your car in a safe way due to the fog and snow. But I finally got lucky and found a road with a wide enough pull over :D
I love your channel. I love your approach to black and white photography. I love your vision and the images you make. I am envious of your talent.
Great inspiring video!
Thanks!
Beautiful work, pictures and video thank you
Thank you, and thank you for watching!
Perfect attitude. Thanks.
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Such a pleasure to watch. Stunning images.
Thank you, Adam!
Great Video! Very Great.
Thank you, Benjamin!
Really wonderful photos and I’m so glad your camera (and back) survived the snowy/sandy fall! Looks like you did a very calm and methodical clean up job. Well done!
Oh, and no apology needed - your video making is brilliant this time, as with other times. I always look forward to watching when my notification goes!! :)
Thanks, James! Yeah, all my gear is ok, I've taken many photos since then and everything seems to be in working order :)
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Beautiful photos in great conditions. Perfect for b & w film. Can't wait for next winter now.
Thank you for sharing.....
Thanks, Alan!
Une vidéo magnifique encore une fois, quelle beauté :-)
Merci!
Great video! You've done a great job of capturing how extraordinary Indiana can look in the winter! And you are right, you do have to work for photographs here much of the time.
Thanks! It's a beautiful place in the winter, very different. Agreed, it's not easy to find shots, but it's more rewarding this way when you do get one :)
Beautiful photos. I'll have to get down there one of these days.
For sure! It's beautiful in the winter.
I really liked this video. The voice over parts were very well done. I enjoy seeing the progress you are making and am inspired to go shoot. Will be hitting White Sands, NM in the next few days. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I'm glad it inspires you! The White Sands sound so good! I couldn't make it on my road trip but definitely a place I want to visit in the future. Have fun down there, looking forward to seeing those pictures :)
That was wonderful. I love shooting in fog. You did a great job
Thanks, Adrian! Yup, I love fog as well :)
Muy buen trabajo buenísimas tomas Saludos desde Argentina
Muchas gracias, Gerardo!
Just love the B&W images at the start - must run some B&W film through my SQAi ;-)
Thanks, Dave! I love B&W so I'd say yes, you should! :D
Just bumped into this video and I am curious to hear you talk about using your SQ-Ai with the AE finder :)
You did take a plunge with your camera but it was all worth it, the photos are very good 👍🏻
I really enjoyed this video. Looks like the camera survived.
Thanks, Mike! It did, still good as new :)
Really nice photos ! Best regards from Sweden.
Thank you so much Lars-Goran!
The contrast in your images is exceptional. love the minimalistic style too. I bet you are a Michael Kenna fan?
Thank you very much! Indeed I am, love his work :)
I recently picked up a GS-1 at a camera show with a 150mm also. You really inspire me , your shots are really beautiful. You have a great eye. Noticed your using a red filter most of the time, must be some long exposures ? Keep it up as I'm really learning a lot and enjoying your adventures and your photos very much. Larry McCormick
Thanks for the kind words! I use an orange filter most of the time to add more contrast to the photos. They block some light so you have to compensate by about 2 stops, so yeah they could be used for long(er) exposures as well.
The GS-1 looks like a nice camera! I hope you enjoy it :)
I love the grain!!! What about the developer and film? Rodinal?
I like your style very much! Just started shooting with analog cameras recently. No where near from being good at it yet 😊 But it‘s so much fun. What bw film have you been using? I see a lot of grain. Did you push the film?
Really beautiful images - thank you for sharing. I've just bought a Bronica SQ-A with a 110mm lens which I absolutely love (particularly the loud clunk when you press the shutter!) and am just taking some test rolls at the moment. Curious to know - did you use an orange filter throughout the shoot? Oh and I love the music too - perfect for the setting.
You have a red filter on your lens!! :-) Niiiiiiice
Orange, actually. But yes, I use it almost all the time :D
@@aows Ignorant here, but what does an orange filter do for black and white?
@@AC-qe8no it just adds some extra contrast to the image, and darkens some colors like blue. I like the effect :)
Hi, really enjoying your content my friend and it has spurred me on to get my own Bronica SQ-A. Just wondered if you could advise on what lens I need to get to do abstract/close up macro style photography. Is such a lens available for this system. Many thanks Julian
Great video as usual, thank you. Could you do a video on how you protect you camera in the rain and manage to keep shooting? It’s easy with a digital camera with a rear LCD, but it must be difficult with a waist level view finder
Hi, Brian, and thanks! Sure, will do. Just need to wait for the rain haha. But basically, it's almost impossible with a WLF (that I know of). When it rains, I use a plastic bag (a special plastic bag for cameras, but it's plastic) and the prism viewfinder.
Haunting and beautiful! Worth every bit of the effort. Been thinking of getting a red filter for my Yashica Mat 124. But how many stops will I have to overexpose the film with the filter screwed on?
Thanks!
I shoot with an orange filter 90% of the time and I compensate with +2 stops, depending on the scene may be a bit less. But it's usually 2 stops. I'd do about 3 stops for a red filter and go from there. Hope it helps!
Oh man I am so paranoid of dropping my camera. I think I'd rather let my face take the hit than my Mamiya 6. I'm glad the Bronica survived!
Haha, I am too. It really hurt when I saw it full of snow and sand. But oh well, cameras are made to be used :) Thanks!
Again: Beautiful work. I enjoy every single video! Especially when Luna is with you :D In some of your older videos you talked about pushing your films ... You said that increases the contrast. What about the grain? Does it effect the grain? Some of your pictures in this video where much more grainy than others ...
Thanks! :)
All of the pictures were shot at 800 (that's 1 stop push) and they do have more grain than if I shot them at 400.
But the grain in these pictures is a result of pushing the contrast when scanning and post-processing them. It was very foggy and even though I used an orange filter, the mist made them too flat. I wanted white snow and black trees, but the whole scene was very gray (not sure if you can see that in the video).
As I said I used an orange filter, and I overexposed the photos 3 stops (2 for the filter, 1 for the snow). Next time I think I'll use a red filter and overexpose them even more. I still struggle with photos of the snow :)
Have you tried Tri-X or fp4 pushed a couple stops? Shooting them at 800 produces more contrast for me and my development process. I’ve also started wet printing and I’m enjoying photography more now than ever.
I've tried Tri-X, but not FP4 (only shot it at box speed). I always shoot HP5 at 800 though, thinking about doing it at 1600 to get even more contrast.
That's awesome! Do you find it easy and manageable? It's something I'd love to do one day!
aows darkroom printing is way easier than I thought and it’s really cheap. I’ve just started but already made prints I’m really happy with. Be patient and keep your eyes peeled for darkroom stuff. I’ve gotten everything for free. I even got a few boxes 11x14 and 8x10 paper to practice with.
I set up in our bathroom. The enlarger sits in the counter and 4 trays go in the tub. Developer, stop, fixer, and wash. I can do up to 6x9 negatives with this small set up.
Nice! I'm sure there are people throwing stuff away, you just need to find them! I'm glad you are liking it, it's something I want to do one day in the future. I would really like to transform my workflow into something like: shoot with the Bronica, develop, scan, edit on the computer, print digital negative, print in the darkroom. We will see! Good luck with your darkroom :)
Great pictures, hope the camera is ok .
Thanks, David! Yeah, fortunately, the camera survived :)
Hello, love your work. Do you do post processing on your photos?
Yes I do! I use Lightroom. Thanks!
Why do you use red focusing glass?
It's an orange filter, I use it to add more contrast but it also helps with previewing the final monochrome image :)
@@aows yeah, I realized it a while after :D
