In high school I got so depressed I had to be hospitalized. I quit eating, quit living. This song told me that what I was feeling was natural and that it was ok.
One of the best ANTI COMMITTING SUICIDE Songs ever written......and one of the Greatest Metal Songs in General.....the Song and Lyrics helped me more than one in my Life to continue....
I was 14 when this album came out and going through some very dark times, this song saved me. Every word in the lyrics was what I was feeling but the final solo was so inspiring, so uplifting so impactful that it showed me that there was a little light within the darkness and there was hope... All true Patrick. But there is more to it. His mother bought him an expensive amp (that was on the U-haul) before she passed away, as her last gift for him chasing his dream. It was that sentimental attachment that makes this song so emotionally well written. When I first heard this song when it came out, I thought he was putting himself in the mindset of a woman that had a miscarriage. Because of the line “Missing one inside of me”. It wasn’t until I read a bunch of interviews that I realized the real reason behind it. I got it really wrong. Lol. It makes me think of G’N’R’s song “I Used to Love Her (but I had to kill her)”. Everybody on the planet got that wrong. We all thought he was talking about an ex, not his dog.
My all-time favorite Metallica song. Later came Master of Puppets, One, and The Unforgiven, of course. But when Fade to Black came out in 1984 it influenced me musically for the rest of my life
I’m almost 50 years old and I still remember the night I heard this song the first time. It is the reason I’m getting to watch you hear it the first time tonight
Just seeing the smile’s on your faces while this classic song was being played live was so worth it. Im so glad you enjoyed this song. Never gets old and ive heard it hundreds of times. Super reaction you two.
You talking about the feelings about the song made me too agree with you, that talking about this vulnerability and expressing oneself is so powerful. Love from India ❤️
Would highly recommend listening to anything live from their Seattle 1989 concert. Next level performance. One the greatest metal concerts ever performed and recorded! 🤘
I swear without Metallica,I wouldn't have made it back from Kuwait and Iraq. I literally just looked at my daughters while listening and burst into tears
So Metallica is my favorite band/ has been since 1990/1989 or so. I didn’t meet my fiancé until 2017/ she um passed away November 17th 2021 but Metallica was her favorite band as well, she had been to many shows & concerts had a t-shirt from 93- 2000 . This song is so beautiful😍you have to listen to the same song performed here in Italy(Bologna)...the crowd sings the guitar's solos!very emotional!great reaction guys!good evening here from Italy🤟🇮🇹stray strong💪
They did add something to it at the end. The album studio version fades away during the end solo and doesn't really come to an end. Kirk added a little extra at the end to actually give it an ending.
To the lady's analysis in the end...they didnt have anything at the time this was written. Its from their second album "Ride the lightning" from 1984. And the first was a "success" in the sence that metal wasnt mainstream then, but this album did really well on the charts and that Just continued with each album, until the 1991 "self titled" album dropped and made heavy metal go mainstream. Yes, that spawned the way for others. Still being the best selling album of the soundscan era with over 17 million sales in US alone.
Moscow 1991 is hands down the best performance of this song. Not sure why nobody reacts to it. Kirk fucked up the solo in this so bad, whatever he did here sounded like garbage compared to how he played it in Moscow.
Only one word for this song and Metallica...... YES!!! Thanks for this. And glad you are experiencing all of this other great music. Keep up your journey.
The inspiration for this was when James, Lars, Kirk and Cliff had their instruments stolen from them and they were very sad, depress and angry which you can very well feel those emotions in this song
There were times that I lost purpose.. Man, that song really summoned something inside of me, which saved me. I really can't say what helped me, but people will just recognize, I am sure that I'm not alone.
@@UltraViolent21 So that's why James always yells "ARE YOU ALIVE, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ALIVE", because his amp was stolen 30 years ago smh, are people really that dumb that they believe that still?.
This song gives me chills to this day! Was already a fan, but I saw them live finally in '95 it Blew my damn mind! I scream/sang and cheered so loud I had laryngitis for four days! Feeling like someone understood the depression, this song precious to me.
Never underestimate the healing empathetic power of music. Without this song and songs like it I likely wouldn't have survived the abuse of my childhood and teen years, and wouldn't be here typing this right now.

I’m fine with him improvising a bit on that solo, but he should’ve came back in for the best fucking part of the solo. We all know the part. Like improvise a little before that, but you HAVE to play that part. I mean he usually does, but i don’t know why he didn’t here lol

So basically it's like you get a new solo to the song every time they play Fade To Black. It part of the reason Fade To Black is my favorite song by Metallica
About the only difference between live and album versions is is James' guitar intro at the beginning on the album version is a little faster in tempo. At around the 12:00 mark, the band plays essentially the same outro music on every live performance of this song, while the outro on the album plays to fadeout. The same outro music for the song is played even as far back on the Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge album/show in Seattle '89
