    Rumour has it this song blew off the last of Phil’s hair, which is why they haven’t played it live in decades :-(

      The whole "Bends"-era vibe of this version of the song (Thom on acoustic, strong Ed harmonies, intertwining Jonny + Ed riffs) is really striking. Well deserving of a place in the "Brilliant original versions of songs Radiohead changed in the studio" catalogue, alongside "Videotape", "Lift", "True Love Waits" [the Jonny on synth take, not the so-so IMBW version!], et cetera et cetera...

    Yea once I was playing around on the guitar in my living room after school and I acidentally wrote the first few bars of electioneering by Radiohead. At the time I had only heard the song a few times on the radio or at the mall, never intentionally listened to it anyway. So when I hit the first few notes of the song, which are just standard g minor penatonic scale, i just kept going thinking that the melody was coming from my head. So I kept playing till I ended up finishing the song and after a while I ended up recording it. I put it out on UA-cam and decided to name the song ‘Somewhere over the rainbow 2’. The video got over 30 views on the internet and so Walt Disney signed me a record deal with them. I played ‘somewhere over the rainbow 2’ at a my first concert in Down Under Australia. Among all the head-banging kangaroos I see Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead guitarist, who by the way is even sexier in person. He looked angry. At this point in time I realised that the song hadn’t come from my head and I had actually ripped of Radiohead. So at the sight of Jonny boy i darted for the exit. But just as I got there he cornered and BOOM he cracked me over the head and I was out like a light.
    I woke up tied to a chair, disorientated, in what looked like a massive where house. In the corner I see Jonny sharpening what looked a large collection of weapons. After a while of thick silence he slowly walked towards me with dagger the size of his of a guitar. He said only to words,
    ‘My song’
    He started to press the dagger into my cheek, drawing drops of blood. I screamed hard into my sodden gag. Screamed harder and harder hoping someone would receive my cry of hope. But I had little hope, at least until I heard a cry. The high pitched girly voice of Thom Yorke. My prayers had been answered. He ran forward, covered my ears, and let out an almighty wail. Johnny was brought to his knees.
    Thom Yorke had saved. He said that I was 2.40x better than Jonny anyway so now I play as Radiohead’s guitarist but in disguise as Jonny greenwood.
    True story. I know no one will believe me because it’s a very crazy story but it is true. Kangaroos do exist.

    This was the version of the song that, along with "Lift" and "I Promise", the label was looking towards for a potential first single. When the other 2 didn't even MAKE the album (lol), and they heard the nasty, garage-y, psychedelic beast the tune turned into, they were apparently pulling their bloody hair out. Ahhh, Radiohead...

    • @mywhychromosome
      @mywhychromosome 4 місяці тому

      @@reeeckoner Ahh, so THAT’S how it happened…makes even more sense why the KidA/Amnesiac songs developed from being performed with the full band in relatively similar fashion, to the label executive “fuck you” that was the final swoony, shadowy electronics of those records that largely put electric guitars to the side. They were avenging the lost locks. Side note: While I’m glad they weren’t able to get hacked by some assholes again, it’s too bad knowing just as much great material is being held back from those reissues just as it was with OKC until someone tried to blackmail them…

    I saw them play this twice in one night, Troubador in LA in 95 or 96? They must have just written it because they were extremely gung-ho to perform it. That was an amazing show, 6feet from the stage in a club smaller than a MCDonald's dining area. They even played Creep. Johnny was playing notes on his keyboard whike playing guitar with his headstock.

      It's "give me one of your prizes", another play off the song's theme of something that is supposed to be art (a touring band) being turned into a self-promoting, handshaking, ass-kissing commercial venture, a shallow advertisement. Think of the way radio-stations give away prizes to "Caller number [blank]"
