This performance was the high point of mid-1990's rock. All the fundamentals are there but the absolutely brutal execution really makes it something special. Thom's voice is transcendental, an otherworldly warning of the pitfalls of emotion and the human condition. This is a performance for the archives, to be sure. When someone asks you what rock was in the 1990s, show them this and say nothing. Let the music move them.
I believe Ed and Phil were the ones who enjoyed their old school rock band days the most... Ed wanted to make another OK computer/ bends but the band went in the Kid A direction. And obviously their new direction didn't have as much room for a drummer.
