- www.autobytel.c... The 2013 Subaru BRZ, along with its twin brother, have been named to Autobytel's Car of the Year List. The BRZ is the first rear wheel drive sports car that Subaru has developed in over 50 years. The BRZ is all about balance and handling. The Boxer engine has a flat design and allows for the center of gravity to be lower in this car. The 2013 Subaru BRZ is a real driver's car and with a base price of $25,494 that is well within reach of most enthusiasts.
Take a car that has RWD, a manual transmission, and the engine up front; add those things together and you have a recipe for an exciting sports car. Toyota and Subaru have joined forces to produce such a vehicle. We have already tested the Scion FR-S now let's take a look at what makes the 2013 Subaru BRZ such and amazing car. From afar the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ look almost identical. But up close you will notice the front end differs a bit between these 2 automobiles. The BRZ sports classic Subaru Blue Paint, along with the diamond cut grille inserts in the bumper.
Under the hood the award winning FA20 engine is a horizontally opposed 2.0 liter flat-4 Boxer. This engine produces 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft. of torque. You can pick between a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Fuel economy is excellent at 25 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway.
The 2013 Subaru BRZ differs most from the Scion FR-S when it comes to the interior. The BRZ has a standard navigation screen and leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The BRZ has a cool push button start and aviation style switches. The 2013 Subaru BRZ packs more standard features and options than the Scion FR-S.
The Subaru BRZ is a pure driving car. It's a blast to take out on the road. The 6-speed manual is near perfect with its show throws. The pedals are perfectly placed for heel-tow downshifts. The brakes are responsive and the steering is direct. This car is all about having fun.

Ppl confuse a car that's fun to drive with a car that's really fast. If you want to win drag races look elsewhere. Some ppl just want something fun and cool looking to whip around town.
I like the brz in its current state, its the perfect for the 25 year old that wants a fun car to drive.
Tom Richards im 18 and i have one
I’m 17 and have one /:
6years later...do you stil own it? This is a collectors item..
I love this car. Drove one a while back and was thoroughly impressed. Very very nice driver's car. I would definitely get it over the Genesis, and the Mustang any day.
As an audio guy I can tell you the EQ is SO much better than just having a bass and treble control. You just gotta know the frequency spectrum bruh
Just bought this car in late January, been having a blast with it. It's fast enough for me, and the car is a looker. I'm constantly getting compliments in it.
Bruh, cheap fuel, cheap wheels, fun car great chassis. Keeps value more then most other cars what more can one want
Talked to a guy today that got a "used" limited $27,700. It had 2000 miles on it. He purchased it 4 days ago.
"We know there will be a turbo charged engine down the road."
Nope.
"We know there will be an STI model later."
Nope.
I just test drove both today and you hit the nail on the head. VERY accurate description.
Actually, the industry reviewers have said that both of these models are pretty well priced for what they have to offer.
You would do well by getting one, that is for sure. Plenty of power, good gas mileage, rear wheel drive, quick throw
gearbox.. SWEET! I wish you well, my friend.
Pressroom Toyota and Subaru released sales figures for the BRZ. They sold a total of 5932 BRZ's as of Mar 13. 16000+ FRS's. Don't be jealous of a car you cannot afford.
The Mustang is a wonderful american made performance value. For 95% of Americans that is a true statement. The Mustang Weighs 700 to 1200 pounds more and has a much higher center of gravity. The BRZ is a more agile entertaining car to drive for those of us that are not hooked on HP. The Mustang GT is hell of a car.
No allot of people don't. Most of the Subaru dealers I spoke with charged no mark up. You have to wait for a car. I paid 26,200 for mine including destination. If you want a BRZ today you may have to pay Mark up. If you are willing to fly you can get one within a week. You should not have a problem. Their are Automatics available.
Yup, I just bought one today and that's what they told me. It is SO fun to drive I had to tear myself away / put it away for the night. I was bummed about the gas at first, but totally worth it. :))
I got a 2020 sport tech rs in rally blue. How time flies.
I don't need any creature comforts so just give me whatever version of this car is the least expensive. Then I'll put it through its paces on the West Virginia roads around Hawks Nest so I can see what this chassis can really do.
Not trying to fan the fire here, but I test drove the Genesis, and the BRZ, on the hunt for a rwd daily driver. The Genesis 4cyl turbo had more grunt, but with a lot less purpose... The BRZ just feels right... From the pedal placement, steering, and gearbox feel... You may have to drive both to get what I mean, but the Genesis felt more like a muscle car, and the BRZ like a very very practical go-kart.
Wheels on BRZ and FRS are the same!!!!!!!
This car took too long to be released. I needed up getting the mustang v6 manual & I don't regret it!
I'm getting this car this weekend!
actually most modern turbochargers with a good tune, setup and plumbing done correctly can give you very little turbo lag
Im still enjoying the hell out of mine. Enjoy Bob!
Well you're right in terms of mechanical similarity. But I was talking about commercial competition. Most people looking to buy a (relatively) affordable, new sports car would at least consider some, if not all, the cars I listed.
They are dead on. The RSX Type S has a painful ride, no bottom end below 6000 rpm and allot more understeer. The top end on the RSX is way sweeter. The RSX is a wonderful car. The BRZ is just a more balanced RWD RSX.
I can't wait to race one of these in my MR2 Turbo. Should be pretty close.
2019 and still no STI turbo version?
200 hp (and more importantly 150 lb.ft. torque) is NEVER a lot of fun. Until they come out with a turbocharged version of this car, it will remain the red-headed little stepchild of the WRX.
Interesting how this review early on seemed to indicate that the Engine was a strong point of the car, while by the 2nd Generation the Engine would be one of the things that felt in need of correcting.
Can't wait for an sti version
Whats this guy talking about, the BRZ definitely has competitors other than the FR-S and V6 Mustang. Considering the price range and performance? How could he not thin of: the Honda Civic Si, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mazdaspeed 3, Chevy Camaro, VW GTI, VW GLI, Nissan 370Z, and Subaru WRX?
GREAT VIDEO! WOW! buying it asap bye
Please tell me the seat goes back further then what he has it if not at least the tilt..i. 6'1 he look to be a out that as well that being said i dont drive that up right does the tilt go back any further then that
FYI, there's two different versions of the FA20 Engine. The D version is what the BRZ has. But there's also an F version that has a turbo on top of the direct injection. So why didn't they put that engine in the BRZ? And when will they, if ever?
I drove one of these yesterday, nice, handled well and quite comfortable but I guess it's a matter of what kind of bang you want for your buck ?
In my opinion the Genesis Coupe with the premium package is twice the car this Subaru is.
A hell of a lot more horsepower with the 2.0 Turbo, a much nicer interior, likewise with the sound system and more room inside = more comfort, the only thing ( again in my opinion ) the Subaru has better than the Genesis Coupe is handling.
I agree, it is overpriced
I'd love to drive one!
In last 15 years it’s the “only” rwd from subaru. I want it as roadster!! And who cares about back seats. Put a folding roof in there, and keep the trunk.
im going to have that car in My future to be gettin one right know cuz that's My dope car
Jeff, you da' man! Great review! Mebbe as a followup, get your grubby mitts on a forced inducted BRZ?
Lol. V6 mustangs are killn this.
the star of pleiades
Only the MX5 is close. All the other cars are to heavy, complex, expensive or FW or AWD. If the Civic SI was not FWD it would be close also.
200 hp, 151 ft pounds torque, front engine, rear drive, manual. Am I missing anything here?
(Okay, for the extreme enthusiast, a TURBO must be mentioned) Otherwise, I believe this car, with this formula and it's affordable price point is going to be a uncompromising home run!
I had a manual 2000 Celica GT. I have been looking for a replacement for 8 years. I have driven them all. I love the MX5 (but I am to tall for it). The Si is fun but I cannot take the crazy interior and horrible outward vision not to mention I have had it with FWD. I almost got the Cruze Eco and the GTi. The Cruze had a week gearbox and a useless back seat (its a 4 door). The GTI has a horrible reliability record. The BRZ/FRS is the Only car that was more satisfying to drive than the Celica.
subaru with manual trans gimmie gimmie!
رائعة بكل معنى الكلمة
I'd love to get a BRZ/FRS. It might be just me but I do think they're over-priced by about $2,000-3,000. I will probably end up with it used anyways.
is this the base model? can anyone tell me if the 2013 subaru brz base has a push to start engine?
They are dead even. the RXS has more top end but the BRZ is lower with better aerodynamics and has a better bottom end. They both will do the quarter in 14.9. Either car could be slightly ahead at that point.
Its actually a travesty that this car is only 500 bucks less than a base WRX. This car should really be about 20 thousand solid. This car doesnt even come close to competing with a WRX nor does anything else below 27 grand.
FRS is not hid headlamp,so what about BRZ headlamp?
Scion frs, subaru brz, i will own one of these cars
Do you own one yet?
People always make this mistake "horizontally opposed, flat-four, boxer engine" They are all the same, pick one and work with it. 'Horizontally opposed' makes you sound Engineer-y geekish, 'flat-four' makes you sound 'preppy' and boxer just makes you sound like a 'ricer' pick your poison - I prefer 'Horizontally-opposed' by the way.
there is not enough power, ive drivin a few of these and its disappointing to say the least, sounds pretty strong, but feels really sluggish. needs a turbo for sure.
To add to my previous post ,,, yes there is a difference in price but when buying a new car $ 3200.00 is not that much all being considered.
Also take into consideration the better warranty offered by Hyundai and I really think it's a bit of a no brainer between these two cars.
I do like the Subaru over the Mazda MX5 if ever there was an overpriced and under powered sports car / coupe on the market Mazda sure produced one there.
I don't think you get that much car for $28,000.00 from Subaru ??
is this a commercial for subaru because its not a review
lol dude said i wish it was dumb down a little bit 2:25
This car is bad ass all around. That hyundai shit may be faster but the brz looks better, and you need more than speed to be a good sports car. Plus hyundai is a junk car up there with kia, they are just so bad.
def true.
My brother has a scion frs and im getting nissan 350z
Another difference is the smiley face grille
Both the Mustang and the Hyundai Coupe weigh 700 pounds more than the BRZ. As good as the Mustang V6 is It can not dance like the BRZ.
I'm just cheap, I suppose :) Under $30,000 is pretty good. This would be a nice improvement over my Mazda 3 sedan(140hp). More power & mpg that's on par or better than what I have hehe. Thank you
identical sports car
Hey guys, I'm about to start driving (ikr WATCH OUT!) and i'm stuck and what car to get, and my wonderful mother mentioned the brz [thanks mom :)] just wondering how this car fairs in terms of reliability. Like, is it a garage queen that takes up alot of time and money, or will it serve me well for years to come as a plan to take this car to college with me. So yeah, having to pay for my own insurance, it would suck if this nice car sucked me dry.
cant put a number on the driving impression. try to get behind the wheel of them instead of talking raw numbers.
A used Cayman is only a bargain if you can afford a new one.
Maybe the Veloster ..?
my only negative comment!!! i've heard it only takes premium gas?!?!...WTF...correct me if i'm wrong
That car understears horrifically! I don't get all these good reviews... I bought one after seeing all these good reviews. The front end might as well always be in the rain because it feels like the front tires are eternally wet. My Matrix doesn't understear anywhere near as bad and it's front wheel drive.
6 band EQ is for audiophiles?
GOOBY PLS
What the hell is up with all the Hyundai fans preaching about there car in the Subaru brz videos. Kia and Hyundai aren't even in the same ball park as Subaru. But yeah, less reputable car companies may have cars that look like there a deal. when truthfully it's like buying a generic bargain item from Walmart, you think you're getting something of the same quality or better. but in reality you bought something that will last you 1/100th of the time.
The BRZ
plenty of power for the street.
It's 2018. Still no turbo version. Very disappointing.
And you're nuts
I'm pretty sure you've commented on every frs/brz video dissing this car. We get it, you hate the car. Move on please.
Wrong. It may LOSE but it won't LOOSE.
Suburu isn't a name brand car. Who the fuck drives Suburu's? NOBODY.
LOL head to head Genesis coupe 2.0T vs BRZ/FRS on the track, the BRZ will loose, still slower than the slowest of the Genesis coupes... where is the lowest center of gravity, cornering, superb handling? hahahaha
not to mention there's nothing respectable about Hyundai whatsoever, have you not noticed every time you see a Hyundai you never go over look that's a Hyundai, no you always say that's a BMW a Lexus a Honda or some other brand. they rip off other companies designs, even there damn logo is a ripoff of Honda, not to mention their name is pretty damn close too.
But it is a 2 door...
And it comes with a tool. Oh, wait...that's reviewer.
save a few grand get a mx-5
just thank your mom for buying you a damn car! it will be fine, but you shouldn't have something sporty like this for your first car, you WILL crash it.
yea Genesis R-spec V8 tau 5.0 430HP engine among top 10 best engines on planet earth go read... ignorant.
The Mustang has a Chinese made transmission that is full of problems. The M-82. No Mustang for me.
IT's made in China drive shaft ... Not Chinese made Transmission ..completely different meaning dude
Looks cramped, not for tall or fluffy people
I'm 6'2, and honestly I found it much more roomy than it's appearance would suggest. Though I wouldn't recommend it for anyone taller.
Just looking at it, I realized I wouldn't fit. I'm 6'4" 230. Short legs long torso so I don't think the head room would be there. Why do they have to make it so small?
6'4 130?? You can probably get in without opening the door.
Nick Walters Correction, 230.
ComputerTrainer101
Actually, I've got a good 4" of headroom when I'm in it. More than I did with my Dart, actually.
it will not be
Overpriced. Should be around 19k
Hyundais are bought by lower IQs, what else would expect them to be saying, something smart?
EVO?......pffffffffffwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
Good joke
It can't compete with that piece of shit mustang! are your serious? yanks me me lol
