      Yes! The lodge that come preseasoned are only 'preseasoned' so that they dont rust. They DO have another line thats supposedly already seasoned for cooking (havent tried them though). If you have a high end cast iron pan from a small company, it's likely seasoned and ready for cooking!

    • @BlackTieKitchen
      @BlackTieKitchen  4 роки тому +3

      Depends. Sometimes the fat can go rancid if it has been too long. Youd have to inspect it - it could probably use a fresh layer or two. Might need to be stripped and reseasoned though - really dependa on the conditions its been stored in.

    • @BlackTieKitchen
      @BlackTieKitchen  4 роки тому +1

      No need! They all get the same treatment! Being scared of screwing it up is natural. Just go through the process and you'll see for yourself that it's not as bad as we think it's going to be. And worst case scenario - you can always start over because at the end of the day, it's literally just iron. There's nothing special about it!
      Trust me, just go through the process. Ive helped a few people who were TERRIFIED and are now glad they did it because they use their cast iron pans for EVERYTHING! If you need help, let me know!

I've been cleaning out my cookware cabinets and decided to clean and season all my cast iron. I'm not a hoarder, but I counted out 10 different pieces ranging from an aebleskiver pan to a 14 in pan with double-loop handles. It's taking me three days to do the task, and do it right. Question! I thought you were never ever supposed to apply soap to a cast iron skillet, but I see you did that when you initially cleaned it. Is that the only time you’d ever use soap on it?

    • @BlackTieKitchen
      @BlackTieKitchen  3 роки тому +2

      In my experience, you can use soap to clean them. The no soap adage came from when lye was used in soap, which will absolutely destroy the seasoning, BUT modern dish soap doesnt use lye. I usually clean my cast iron pans with salt, or if its slightly rougher material, I will use my chainmail and water with some soap. The key is to not scrub the heck out of it with something rough like steel wool. You will have to find what works for you! Just be aware that many opinions are "this is the only way, any other way is wrong and will destroy your seasoning." But in the end... you really cant screw up too badly... unless you wash it in the dishwasher 😂

    • @reubenk1615
      @reubenk1615 2 роки тому

      Let me add that for two years, which is the time I've had with cast iron I used dish soap.
      But recently I'm coming to change my opinion because I find that the dish soap scent seems to stick and linger, I can tell because I smell it in the steam on the burner later when drying and I don't like it.
      That is why I'm changing my mind on the dish soap issue and am preferring to NOT use it, or at least reduce using it when possible.
      That's my two cents on the mater.
      Happy cooking!

    Sooooo… I zoned out somehow and missed a crucial step.
    Im on layer 2. Except, I kinda missed the warm it up at half the temp for 20 minutes, THEN oil it.
    I just straight up oiled it while the pan was room temperature and cool. Then put it in the oven at 450.
    Should I just proceed to layer 3, make sure I don’t miss the 20 minute warm up step like an idiot, warm it up for 20 minutes, THEN oil it like I’m suppose to.
    Or should I ‘start from scratch’ and get rid of the 2 season layers that I have incorrectly done.
    It looks fine? I guess what I’m asking is, can I just proceed to continue layering and do it right going forward OR would you recommend starting from scratch? THANKS FOR THE EPIC VIDEO BY THE WAY!

    I just found out what seasoning was cus I bought a new skillet, cooked soda bread on it once and it had dark patches after, can I still season skillet after one use or is it ruined?

    I didn’t have lint free towels so I used a brush to apply the oil, and blotted with regular kitchen paper towels

    • @BlackTieKitchen
      @BlackTieKitchen  4 роки тому +1

      Paper towels can work just as well, but have a good chance of leaving fibers behind since the skillet wont be as smooth as when it's seasoned! Use what you have 😁

    hi!! awesome video! m about to buy my first cast iron,its factory preseasoned.Shall i start to season it?or do i strip the the factory preseasoning and start a new seasoning?thanks!!!

    • @BlackTieKitchen
      @BlackTieKitchen  3 роки тому +2

      Start with the factory seasoning! Just give it a good light wash with soap and water. Those seasonings arent bad, but theyre not sufficient - theyre really there to protect the pan from rusting!

    • @Balthamel13
      @Balthamel13 3 роки тому

      @@BlackTieKitchen someone told me that the seasoning i will do it cannot get through the pores of iron cast if it is preseasoned!thats a myth right?? thanks mate!!!you are great

    • @BlackTieKitchen
      @BlackTieKitchen  3 роки тому +2

      Eh, it doesn't really matter. Your'e creating layers of thin polymers when you season a pan. Every pan Ive seasoned or helped season was "pre-seasoned" and they all work wonderful without having stripped the "pre-seasoning." If there's one thing you learn about cast iron, it's that, everyone has their opinion on "the right way to season a cast iron pan." And based on science, it really doesnt matter. Worst case scenario, you can strip it and start over. So I wouldnt fret too much about it. Just be aware it will take a decent amount of use before the pan becomes silky smooth and nonstick!

    • @BlackTieKitchen
      @BlackTieKitchen  2 роки тому

      Im actually planning a video on cleaning! You dont have to reseason per se - just hit it with a little oil after drying and heating it up (to make sure you got all the water out)

    I forgot to wash the new skillet with soap and water. I just wiped it down with a wet paper towel before I seasoned it. Should I removed the seasoning and wash it and start over?

    • @BlackTieKitchen
      @BlackTieKitchen  4 роки тому

      No, it should be fine. The washing part is really just to get any potential dirt from the store/transit. If you really wanted to strip the seasoning youd have to start with a vinegar bath and scorch the thing at ~800° in the oven! Just keep using the skillet to build that seasoning!

    So just to be sure, after you do a coating of oil, let it sit in the oven at 450 for an hour, then shut off the oven and sit for another hour? Then repeat two more times?

    • @BlackTieKitchen

      If the stovetop is induction: 100%. If it's a coil with the glass top - that is generating heat regardless, so it too will work!
