Your vids are in the category of the best I’ve seen. Thanks for showing how to season a cast iron pan. Now you need to do one on how to properly clean one!
Thanks! There are a bunch of way to clean them: personally Ive found those 'chainmail' type scrubbers with a little water and some mild soap work really well for tough bits. Just make sure not to scrub it like crazy
Quick and to the point, unlike most videos out there on cast iron skillets. Just bought one at target and needed to know what to do before I start using it. Sadly, it can't be used right away like I was hoping to. Had to order take out instead and gotta season the skillet to be able to use tmrw.
Good luck! It will take some time before it has that esteemed nonstick quality, but the more you use it, the better it will become, and the more you will fall in love with it. Thanks for watching!
I know they have two lines - their regular and then another that has a few extra layers of seasoning. Let me know how it goes! Im curious about that second line's seasoning
This video deserves so much more attention and likes I don't even own any cast iron but I feel like I could binge watch a tv series of you telling me what to do with cast iron skillets
Yes! The lodge that come preseasoned are only 'preseasoned' so that they dont rust. They DO have another line thats supposedly already seasoned for cooking (havent tried them though). If you have a high end cast iron pan from a small company, it's likely seasoned and ready for cooking!
New follower and I line your content, I picked up 3 cast iron pans month ago and I’ve been nervous to season it until I watched you sir, it worked so good, thank you thank you thank you 🥰
so how long can a skillet stay seasoned while not being used? does a seasoning have an expiration time period? I seasoned mine but it has gone unused for about 4 months now.
Depends. Sometimes the fat can go rancid if it has been too long. Youd have to inspect it - it could probably use a fresh layer or two. Might need to be stripped and reseasoned though - really dependa on the conditions its been stored in.
Never heard of or seen this guy. I watch one video, clicked on his channel to see if his content is always this good and subbed. I love finding quality channels I haven’t heard of 👌🏻👍🏼
My sister got me a 14" cast iron skillet from Amazon and it weighs a good 10-15 lbs! But a followed your 4 step process to the letter, working throughout the day, and it turned out beautiful. I can now spatchcock a whole roaster chicken along with vegs around the side...first on stove top then oven. Thank you so much for a great tutorial.
No need! They all get the same treatment! Being scared of screwing it up is natural. Just go through the process and you'll see for yourself that it's not as bad as we think it's going to be. And worst case scenario - you can always start over because at the end of the day, it's literally just iron. There's nothing special about it! Trust me, just go through the process. Ive helped a few people who were TERRIFIED and are now glad they did it because they use their cast iron pans for EVERYTHING! If you need help, let me know!
So after all that conditioning, do you just not wash it anymore after using? Or you do? Do you not need to season it anymore after that even after washing? Or do you do this annually or something?
You can wash it with hot water (and soap if necessary), then reheat it to get rid of any moisture and hit it with a quick light coat of oil on the inside!
Best video on seasoning a cast iron skillet I have seen in a long while!! Great questions!! What mixed drink would the Black Tie Kitchen make for sitting inside on quarantine?
Far out! I didn't know you had so many different types of videos.👍 I was searching on the UA-cam-verse for a vid on proper storage of cast iron cookware and this one ☝was in my feed. I've been cleaning out my cookware cabinets and decided to clean and season all my cast iron. I'm not a hoarder, but I counted out 10 different pieces ranging from an aebleskiver pan to a 14 in pan with double-loop handles. It's taking me three days to do the task, and do it right. Fark! 😜Alas, they look really pretty now. 😄Thank you for the video and instructional information. Question! I thought you were never ever supposed to apply soap to a cast iron skillet, but I see you did that when you initially cleaned it. Is that the only time you’d ever use soap on it?
In my experience, you can use soap to clean them. The no soap adage came from when lye was used in soap, which will absolutely destroy the seasoning, BUT modern dish soap doesnt use lye. I usually clean my cast iron pans with salt, or if its slightly rougher material, I will use my chainmail and water with some soap. The key is to not scrub the heck out of it with something rough like steel wool. You will have to find what works for you! Just be aware that many opinions are "this is the only way, any other way is wrong and will destroy your seasoning." But in the end... you really cant screw up too badly... unless you wash it in the dishwasher 😂
Let me add that for two years, which is the time I've had with cast iron I used dish soap. But recently I'm coming to change my opinion because I find that the dish soap scent seems to stick and linger, I can tell because I smell it in the steam on the burner later when drying and I don't like it. That is why I'm changing my mind on the dish soap issue and am preferring to NOT use it, or at least reduce using it when possible. That's my two cents on the mater. Happy cooking!
Soap us definitely a 'if its stuck bad,' at least for me. But i also try to avoid scented soaps for the same reason - I dont particularly like smelling pine forest when i go to use my fork 😂

hi!! awesome video! m about to buy my first cast iron, its factory preseasoned.Shall i start to season it?or do i strip the the factory preseasoning and start a new seasoning?thanks!!!

Eh, it doesn't really matter. Your'e creating layers of thin polymers when you season a pan. Every pan Ive seasoned or helped season was "pre-seasoned" and they all work wonderful without having stripped the "pre-seasoning." If there's one thing you learn about cast iron, it's that, everyone has their opinion on "the right way to season a cast iron pan." And based on science, it really doesnt matter. Worst case scenario, you can strip it and start over. So I wouldnt fret too much about it. Just be aware it will take a decent amount of use before the pan becomes silky smooth and nonstick!
Probably the best video I've seen on this. However: when done cooking say a steak do I wash with soap and water and how many times do I have to re season before using again?
Im actually planning a video on cleaning! You dont have to reseason per se - just hit it with a little oil after drying and heating it up (to make sure you got all the water out)
I forgot to wash the new skillet with soap and water. I just wiped it down with a wet paper towel before I seasoned it. Should I removed the seasoning and wash it and start over?
No, it should be fine. The washing part is really just to get any potential dirt from the store/transit. If you really wanted to strip the seasoning youd have to start with a vinegar bath and scorch the thing at ~800° in the oven! Just keep using the skillet to build that seasoning!
So just to be sure, after you do a coating of oil, let it sit in the oven at 450 for an hour, then shut off the oven and sit for another hour? Then repeat two more times?

This video was a pleasant surprise🤣❤️
Great video, so fun and yet to the point of what to do. Good stuff!
Amazing. I learned a thing and had fun learning the thing
Glad I could entertain and teach!
So just to be sure, after you do a coating of oil, let it sit in the oven at 450 for an hour, then shut off the oven and sit for another hour? Then repeat two more times?
Yup. Repeat as many times as you want, but I recommend at least three coats to start
@@BlackTieKitchen thanks, I'm actually doing this to a cast iron grill grate.
Amazing video! What would you recommend cooking for the first time as a vegan instead of the egg?

Can you use these skillets on a glass top stop, I've got nothing but mixed answers while searching
If the stovetop is induction: 100%. If it's a coil with the glass top - that is generating heat regardless, so it too will work!
How do you clean the pan after you cook on it?
Can not take this seriously. Moving on.
Good to know our sense of humor doesnt match. Thanks for stopping by
