I doubt there will be two different models. I think them pricing it at $400 would be a genius move though, because with the PS5 Pro price announcement, having the new Nintendo at as low a price as possible, they are going to get a lot of PS only fans, who no longer want PS's. I've always played both, so Nintendo has me regardless, but not everyone buys Nintendo. But if they have it priced low, then 75% of PS only players (the 75% isn't an accurate number, just a guess) are going to be absolutely guaranteed to say screw PS and switch to Nintendo
The anchoring effect this is going to have for the mass consumer is really going to help the Switch sucessor, especially since its likely going to have a very strong launch year (and following years) when it comes to games.
First: Why is everyone insisting that the Next Switch will have a version without a cartridge slot?!? Cartridge slots are cheap, unlike disc drives which by way of contrast are expensive to manufacture. Nintendo has no reason to remove the cartridge slot on any model! Second: Next Switch "fourth and final version of the Switch"? No! Regardless of how powerful the Next Switch is, eventually more powerful chips will arrive at a low enough price to warrant a successor.

They're only really limited by their console "cost", I don't know if the costs always factors in R&D or opportunity costs, but most consoles are often sold at a loss in either scenario. Depends how shallow or steep the demand curve is. I would speculate that they would need to go much cheaper to generate particularly large demand. I agree that it's a really interesting question though I guess we're unlikely to ever get an answer.
Sony’s decision makes sense in a vacuum, but it also creates an excellent condition for Nintendo’s marketing of the Switch successor. Very good breakdown as always.

The thing with the rapid tech development phase fading and gains being more and more marginal is that an eventual PS6 faces competition from...the PS5. If PS6 comes out in 2028, you can easily imagine the crossgen period going deep into the 2030s and if PS6 is undesirable people just won't upgrade.

$400 for a Switch 2 don't seem so bad anymore. Nintendo could get away with $500 EXCEPT, they're selling to children. Parents are not going to spend $500 for their child.. $400 is pushing it, but it's more understandable atm.
Honestly, are they really selling to children? Young children are fine with the Switch Lite. Teenagers and adults are always featured in Switch commercials for the Switch and OLED.

@@mmstick Even I have to acknowledge that Nintendo has a much bigger kids market than its competitors. My first Nintendo console was a GBA, and it was when I was 12. Despite being a small percentage of the total, there are still over 600 million people below 18 who play games.
That's because they don't, not in their market anyway. Nintendo tend to their own market the way they have done so for decades, whilst Sony/MS target a different audience, only MS has basically lost it's identity over the years, as well as market share and now barely has any relevance to said market, leaving Sony on their own.
You will never see a smile fade from a child's face faster than when they turn on their brand new console and are looking at a five-hour download to play their game. That is why physical will always exist for a child-centric console.
Physical helps, but only so much. If the game goes down like Concord, requires a full install like a large percent of modern console titles or has all sorts of other issues... An internet connection or at least a wait is required. Only some physical games are plug and play now and it still requires updates to your console so the firmware is in line with the game for the last generation or so.
Nintendo just has to say "¥50,000" for the Switch 2 in Japan, and it will be a moment similar to the Sony vs Sega "$199" announcement in 1994. Gamers in Japan are hurting right now.
@@dirge7459 it is mainly mobile gaming then switch. Pc isn't really in the equation. Steam deck sold less than 5 million worldwide, switch sold over 30 million in japan alone. Mobile gaming dominates then switch. Pc is last. And ps5 is niche. I own a pc handheld a rog ally but, the whole pc stuff isn't big in japan, let alone pc handhelds.
Let's not forget their other main competition in Valve's Steam Deck. $400 for the base model, $550 for the mid tier and $650 for the high end. If the base switch 2 is comparable to the $550 SD in spec while keeping manufacturing costs low and being $50-100 less it'd be amazing! As well, if switch 2 lite and "deluxe" models follow their current gen counterparts, they'd have the SD completely covered
Yep, I want to get a steam deck but I'm waiting to see if switch 2 is worth getting instead. It'd have to be pretty good value to beat out the steam deck for me, though.
Why they would release a Pro Version with No Disc Drive is beyond me. They’ll learn the hard way if people actually vote with there wallets and not buy it. Heck when the Switch OLED released I stuck with my OG Switch due to the lack of a Processor upgrade.
I'm pretty sure both the switch lite and Switch OLED are more powerful but that nintendo only upgraded the hardware so that it could draw less power from the battery and have longer battery life rather than allowing it to run games at higher framerates or graphical fidelity. Jailbroken switch lites and OLEDs are able to run the same games better, especially with overclocking... it just sucks that hacking or jailbraking a console voids the warranty and can get you banned from online services.... and also that you need to crack open the case and do some soldering.

At some point in the development cycle, Sony has to ask “does this provide enough value to the customer to justify the cost?”. The answer was clearly “no” in this case. At that point, you just scrap the product or figure out how to reduce costs.

Japan isn’t where the money is. They’ve got an aging population and a market increasingly switching to mobile and pc. PlayStation is right to value the west.
Switch 2 at approx half the price of the PS5 Pro plus drive would be such a power move. And with how expensive the Pro is in Japan, half the Pro without accounting for the drive.

@@SparkyMK3 PS5pro will probably have the regular model pack-in game still though. For 3DO on the other hand a video decoder module for that disc drive and memory backup-transfer was extra. (as on Nintendos Switch and now sadly also PS5, for some reason..) So even at that price, for a "3DO Pro" you would still have to pay even a lot more than those $800. And to really get a pro picture you would probably need the component video output module as well. Not sure whatever game included with 3DO was a worth compensation for that. ;) Not saying the price hike is a bit too steep for what the probably raw material cost (due to US trade blockades) increase motivates. But let's keep it in perspective here. It's still not even on the top 10 of expensive consoles either in absolute or relative terms for the tech cost.

Absolutely, if people lap that up that is. The big 3 have always tried to set their own precedents, ones like: charging for online Charging extra for another gamepad selling parts that came with a console separately making exclusivity deals to block competitor systems Charging higher/lower prices compared to their competition, etc. Just look at the GPU market, Nvidia has huge market-share and AMD barely has any, so instead of trying to undercut Nvidia, AMD just charges their GPU's slightly cheaper than Nvidia, but very close to Nvidia's asking price, which in turn set a bad precedent for the GPU market. The same will happen to consoles if Sony gets away with their higher asking price.
If this was really "for the PRO gamer," then they should've included a disc drive. "Why wouldn't they price it high?" Well because the people you're apparently targeting are now not interested because you abandoned physical media. If you were going to price it high & target only a niche audience anyway, might as well have included a drive.
Yeah, this argument makes no sense in this video and elsewhere. If it's for the upper end niche individual then they would have made sure it had everything it could. Put in the disc drive and frankly work it so the thing is completely backwards compatible. They didn't do that so they could cut corners, overprice it, and nickle and dime people.

I can't see Nintendo ever going all digital for the reasons you mentioned but also the fact that players - kids especially - don't have to have an online account to pick up and play games on their devices now or ever even once they are out of production. They must lose a lot of profit to the second hand market but it does serve to maximise brand recognition. In line with what you were saying, it's hard to imagine no shelf presence in toy stores, for instance.
If the reason for the high cost is that they don't expect to sell that many and want to maximise profit from whatever they do then you have to question why they are even bothering. Might not be worth it if the reaction from consumers is so negative it affects them going forward
I'm not sure we should bet on Pokémon Legends Z-A as a cross-gen game, especially given Game Freak's track record on sticking with older hardware while they wait for the new system to build up more of an install base. Granted, I'd imagine that Nintendo would *WANT* PLZA to be cross-gen. But again, that's not really how Game Freak & TPC operate.

I doubt, that Nintendo does any crossgen titles. Their games will either still come out on Switch (but being playable on Switch 2 via BC) or be strictly Switch 2 exclusive. Also doubt, that they will do any enhancment patches for BC.

Nintendo should do 2 launch models for the switch 2: Standard model: IPS screen, 128GB, 7 inch screen, 399$ Premium model: OLED screen, 256GB, 8 inch screen, 449$.

PS5 Pro is for their elitist fans. I don't think it will impact any other group of potential buyers. It's just too expensive for an impuls buy. PS5 Slim is probably way more competetive for a Switch 2. Even tho, Switch 2s competitiers are more likely to be thePS6 & next XB. This Generation was dominated by Switch, & I doubt the Pro will change anything about that. It's just too niche of a product.
Before the PS5 Pro's reveal, I was convinced that Nintendo would sell the Swtich 2 at $399, expecting a price drop of the PS5 Digital Edition. But after what you've mentioned about components (and the ridiculous $699 price for the PS5 Pro), I don't feel it's likely anymore. I think we'll be in a 3DS situation where Nintendo will try to sell the Switch 2 at $449, but they'll back up to $399 at a slight loss if sales are low. They could also sell a $499 version with an OLED screen and extra storage space if sales don't meet expectations after the first year or two. I expect cartridge support on both, but a "Switch 2 Lite" might release at $349 after the discontinuation/price drop of the Switch OLED. Not only to cheapen costs but also to make the console smaller, I think the digital-only approach works better with a Lite variant. They might also experiment with weird bundles or new hardware models, like a "lighter" digital-only Switch Lite by removing the cartridge slot ($199, MK8DX included) or by pricedropping the Switch OLED to $299 but using the V1/V2 dock instead --no Ethernet port.
Nintendo MUST stay within the $300 price range or they're gonna suffer. Preferably closer to the $300 end than the $399 end. Just because Sony wants to commit suicide marketwise doesn't mean Nintendo has to follow suit.
I just hope switch 2 or what ever it’s called has 16 GB of DDR5 Ram and performance around ps4 Pro or better. So around 4+ Tflops when docked. The biggest issue with current switch is only has 4 Gb of ram. This forced dev to greatly downgrade many Ps4/Xbox port games. Yeah ps5 pro here is $950 Canadian + tax, depending which Canadian province your in. So $1000 with no blue Ray disc drive, no stand, and cpu in pro also got ignored, just like they ignored it in ps4 pro. Which did greatly effected some games, being cpu limited. Sony is repeating same mistake with ps5 pro by sticking with same older zen 2 cpu. Why didn’t go with zen 3 cpu with RDNA3+ GPUs ( it’s NOT RDNA4 gpu, may have some features of RDNA4 but not RDNA4 gpu in ps5 pro). Maybe cus of cost or to keep compatible With all ps4/5 games or maybe both reason? Imo ps5 pro is a scam. Not worth the price. If came with 4K blue Ray disc drive and stand. Then maybe be worth it. I wonder if in 6+ to 12+ month will see a disc version of the pro? Lol. But it’s understandable why the price is high. Zen 3 cpu here Canada are still fairly high. 5800x is still going $230 to 250$+ range(Canadian price). And 5700 isn’t much cheaper around $200 usd.
Adjusting for inflation, the N64, Wii, Wii U and Switch fall within a ~£360 - ~£420 range (including VAT, aka 20% tax). I'm not including Gamecube because it was a really cheap console at launch, and got even cheaper as it struggled to sell towards the end of its generation, so unfortunately it's too much of an outlier to be helpful (I'm sorry Gamecube, you know I love you) I'm expecting the new console's price to be somewhere within that range. With Sony going absolutely mad, Nintendo's main concerns are going to be the Xbox Series X at £480, and the Steam Deck at £350 for the LCD model, and £480 for the OLED model. I think they'll probably be able to justify pricing higher than the LCD Steam Deck, but there'll be a lot of downward pressure on the price from that £480 mark. The closer they get to it, the more difficult it'll be for them to justify not having an OLED screen. So I don't think they'll want to be going above £420, which is around the upper bound of that initial range for their previous consoles. That's what makes the most sense to me.
"Why did Sony price it so high?" For the same reason they overpriced the PS3 at launch: because they got too cocky and are now overconfident, thinking that they can do whatever they want since Xbox is a colossal failure. Also, Inflation, I don't know if you guys remember but over the last 4 years, the US had a ridiculously high inflation rate. So that could explain SOME of the price hike, but not all of it.
You got a key detail wrong about the PS5 Pro: it's not strictly all-digital. It doesn't come with a disc drive, but it is compatible with the same disc drive add-on they previously released for the slim Digital Edition. Granted, this effectively bumps up the price of the Pro console enthusiasts would actually want even further, with the disc drive costing an additional $80 USD.
One of the big reasons for the removal of disc drives and going all digital is that the disc drives themselves aren't necessarily the cheapest things in the world to make and include. If the cartridge readers Nintendo uses in thier systems aren't as expensive to manufacture, and don't take up much space inside of the system, then they would have a bit less to gain on going all digital via cutting the manufacturing costs of the hardware. Conversely, Nintendo has the most to gain from going digital as manufacturing a cartridge for the Switch is several times more expensive than a dual layered Blu-Ray disc. They would see the biggest increase to thier margins by going all digital. I do think "Switch 2" will allow for physical media, but all-digital is very much on the table for say a "Switch 2 Lite" or an optional revision down the line. The biggest thing that would expedite the end of physical games are them being sold in few and fewer retailers. It's much harder now to just buy them at the store as fewer and fewer stores carry a decent selection or any at all.

Yeah if anything it would leave some wiggle room for 450 as the price. 400 would be nice and is a direct shot at Sony. But 450 depending on what they add might be a good price as well. And isn't trying to sell on raytracing or frames the console can not get.

6:25 Why is the PS5 often seen as a rather tepid seller? From what I've seen in raw numbers, the console is performing about as well as the PS4 did, selling year for year similar hardware numbers. Maybe software sales are worse, I don't know. I definitely often hear that people see less of a reason to get a PS5 over a PS4 since the games don't feel that much better to the average guy. But the console still has a sizeable audience. So I'd assume a PS5 Pro is as valuable to Sony as a PS4 Pro was in it's own day. I don't understand the overall sentiment and based on that I don't follow your logic. It would make sense, if the PS5 was peforming poorly, but it does not is what's my impression.

If Nintendo is able to really push the Switch 2 in docked mode and offer a truly compelling living room experience the Switch 2 will definitely be $499. If the docked mode continues to be a relative weakness I think they should price Switch 2 at $399.
Question, I thought being docked was when the switch was at its best? Cause from what I understand unless this got fixed with oled version. I only have a first model switch so I do not know.
@@coreywong6229 Docked games on Switch will typically run at a slightly higher resolution but you are also blowing that image up on a large 4K television. The Switch has always been a much more impressive handheld than it is a home console for that reason. 540-720p on a 5-6” screen looks nice but 720-900p on a 4K television doesn’t always look so great. That is my point. They need a bigger improvement to image quality in docked mode.
I think a digital only switch is unlikely due to the limited storage space on a portable console. Game sizes will increase again, but Nintendo will still stick with the cartridges.
An announcement from Nintendo in the next weeks showing the Switch 2 and it's price became a bit more credible. Especially if the Nintendo Switch 2 is over 400$, Sony tanked the backlash for them.
All Nintendo needs to do is have their entire Switch 2 reveal consist of someone walking up to the podium and saying "$299." to win the console wars twice in a row right then and there. Sony has lined themselves up like ducks in a row for Nintendo with their ludicrous PS5 Pro price tag (and not showing off any actual games that would take advantage of the upgraded hardware was a major boo-boo), and Xbox is running on fumes these days. (And their newer XSX models are even MORE expensive, iirc)
Nintendo really doesn't have to do anything other than what they are already doing. There's a reason they had been a success for all these years. Of course, they had a few hiccups here and there and do have some problems they need to fix. But, when in terms of games and their ideologies, they are second to none.

I think Nintendo's biggest competition will be the Steam Deck and handheld gaming PCs. The Nintendo exclusives will always carry them, but Microsoft will always have PC versions and Sony has been porting heavily as well. I had a launch PS3 and felt I'd never get another console after that, but Switch offered enough appeal to get me back from just PC gaming.
I bought my PS5 Disc drive used for about 520 USD back in January this year, pretty good deal on my end as it cost about 577 USD here in Sweden at launch AND I got it with two controllers. But it took me selling my PS4 Pro (I didn't own a PS4 regular) to get there, and I am just gonna say it- if I make the upgrade I will most certainly not be buying it without a disc drive, or for the asking price. I want to buy one simply because I want all things to always go faster, but I can overpower my gluttony for GPU-power from my greed and wish to hold on to money rather than spend it on an incremental upgrade I'm not exactly fiending for. Just feels like this is not an appealing package all in all, but I won't say Sony has lost their marbles until I have seen the sales numbers. They ARE more or less the only game in town with Microsoft being in such shambles, so if they manage to drain those like me but with less restraint / bigger wallets... well. That's a victory for them, I suppose.
They say PS5 PRO is only for the enthusiast. But who doesn't want to pay their games in 60 FPS without looking like shit? I can see why PC gamers pitty console gamers.
Just nope on Sony's move being sensible. It's just pure arrogance and greed. Can sum it up that simply. They know they can get away with it because thanks to Microsoft falling apart and Nintendo doing its own thing they have no actual competition. It's the same greed play they made with the PS3 except they actually put more value into that machine first. I think the future proofing argument for both is ridiculous. This is an economic downturn. Buying food is more difficult for people. Overpricing a console so it doesn't sell now but maybe it'll sell in the future when people aren't poor isn't a good plan. And it's a worse strategy for Nintendo. They are going to drop a new console. The last thing they need is that console struggling because they overpriced it in hopes that it would be future proof. Xbox has it's own problem: The Series S. Microsoft is demanding that that all games released have feature parity between both the Series S and the Series X, which has effectively hamstrung developers because of how little RAM the Series S has. Hearing devs complain about publicly it in their studio's discord servers is somewhat alarming. As far as I am aware, they have only waived this requirement once: Baldur's Gate 3 was allowed to drop Splitscreen Co-op support for the Series S.
Nintendo may not think Sony is competition, but I think deep down they are a bit nervous about the PlayStation’s future. I mean you know what they say about history and those that don’t learn about it and considering Nintendo and its history with Sony they have to have some concerns about the company and how they do video games in terms of quality.
Talking about all digital and preservation. People are returning to Music CD's because of the anti consumer practices by the publishers when it comes to digital / streaming only. Another good example is the recent Alan Wake update that removed licenced music. Even those who bought a copy are loosing what they paid for. However those with Alan Wake on physical media are immune from this bad faith action.
I wonder if Nintendo has been waiting for this announcement before they make the Super Switch announcement. Either some NSO package or partnership with Microsoft for Game Pass on Super Switch and this would be a fun reversal of the Sony price announcement. Some PC person (I suppose not Gabe because he's all about Steam) should make an announcement about how easy it is to add a disk drive to PC too.
I really feel like people should look for an alternative to PS. Like a Pc. If you get that along with a steam deck, albeit expensive, you get way more for your buck than a PS5 pro. Plus you have more to do on Pc than simply gaming.
399$ makes a lot of sense for the Switch 2 because they have made a mountain of money with the Switch 1. If the success of the Wii could cover the failure of the WiiU and allow for the Switch to release at 299$, then it's even more probable for the Switch 2 to release at a cheap price, in order to sell as many units as possible.
Don't think I agree with you on this one. Pricing this high or "future proofing" will just hurt in the long run. There are plenty of people that wanted to get the pro, or upgrade but not at this price point, especially when nothing of the original PS5 comes with it (disk drive, and stand). So I think PS is shooting themselves in the foot with this one
Your point of Nintendo coming out with a fourth and final “all digital” console is really interesting! That would be a really ingenious way to bridge that gap honestly. I still feel like a final “docked only” (apple-tv-esque) switch would be an easy play for a cheap final way in to the market (with no screen and stuff, that could honestly be $150 or even $100 if they don’t include a controller!) And if that were all digital, that would be two birds with one stone too. I’m really interested to see what this transition entails!
yes, kids might wanna buy physical games if they are in a brick and mortar store or a mall and see a big mario standee... but physical stores and malls won't exist by the end of this decade. plus, people just don't leave their house as much as they used to.

I think them pricing it at $400 would be a genius move though, because with the PS5 Pro price announcement, having the new Nintendo at as low a price as possible, they are going to get a lot of PS only fans, who no longer want PS's. I've always played both, so Nintendo has me regardless, but not everyone buys Nintendo. But if they have it priced low, then 75% of PS only players (the 75% isn't an accurate number, just a guess) are going to be absolutely guaranteed to say screw PS and switch to Nintendo

First: Why is everyone insisting that the Next Switch will have a version without a cartridge slot?!? Cartridge slots are cheap, unlike disc drives which by way of contrast are expensive to manufacture. Nintendo has no reason to remove the cartridge slot on any model! Second: Next Switch "fourth and final version of the Switch"? No! Regardless of how powerful the Next Switch is, eventually more powerful chips will arrive at a low enough price to warrant a successor.

Depends how shallow or steep the demand curve is. I would speculate that they would need to go much cheaper to generate particularly large demand. I agree that it's a really interesting question though I guess we're unlikely to ever get an answer.

The thing with the rapid tech development phase fading and gains being more and more marginal is that an eventual PS6 faces competition from...the PS5. If PS6 comes out in 2028, you can easily imagine the crossgen period going deep into the 2030s and if PS6 is undesirable people just won't upgrade.

Honestly, are they really selling to children? Young children are fine with the Switch Lite. Teenagers and adults are always featured in Switch commercials for the Switch and OLED.

You will never see a smile fade from a child's face faster than when they turn on their brand new console and are looking at a five-hour download to play their game. That is why physical will always exist for a child-centric console.

If the game goes down like Concord, requires a full install like a large percent of modern console titles or has all sorts of other issues... An internet connection or at least a wait is required.
Only some physical games are plug and play now and it still requires updates to your console so the firmware is in line with the game for the last generation or so.

Let's not forget their other main competition in Valve's Steam Deck. $400 for the base model, $550 for the mid tier and $650 for the high end. If the base switch 2 is comparable to the $550 SD in spec while keeping manufacturing costs low and being $50-100 less it'd be amazing! As well, if switch 2 lite and "deluxe" models follow their current gen counterparts, they'd have the SD completely covered
Yep, I want to get a steam deck but I'm waiting to see if switch 2 is worth getting instead. It'd have to be pretty good value to beat out the steam deck for me, though.

Why they would release a Pro Version with No Disc Drive is beyond me. They’ll learn the hard way if people actually vote with there wallets and not buy it. Heck when the Switch OLED released I stuck with my OG Switch due to the lack of a Processor upgrade.
I'm pretty sure both the switch lite and Switch OLED are more powerful but that nintendo only upgraded the hardware so that it could draw less power from the battery and have longer battery life rather than allowing it to run games at higher framerates or graphical fidelity.
Jailbroken switch lites and OLEDs are able to run the same games better, especially with overclocking... it just sucks that hacking or jailbraking a console voids the warranty and can get you banned from online services.... and also that you need to crack open the case and do some soldering.

At some point in the development cycle, Sony has to ask “does this provide enough value to the customer to justify the cost?”. The answer was clearly “no” in this case. At that point, you just scrap the product or figure out how to reduce costs.
That or not bank it all on one idea. See the 2 week failure. And you could say that too might have cause some damage. I only say some because Sony does make other electronics.

For 3DO on the other hand a video decoder module for that disc drive and memory backup-transfer was extra. (as on Nintendos Switch and now sadly also PS5, for some reason..) So even at that price, for a "3DO Pro" you would still have to pay even a lot more than those $800. And to really get a pro picture you would probably need the component video output module as well. Not sure whatever game included with 3DO was a worth compensation for that. ;)
Not saying the price hike is a bit too steep for what the probably raw material cost (due to US trade blockades) increase motivates. But let's keep it in perspective here. It's still not even on the top 10 of expensive consoles either in absolute or relative terms for the tech cost.

The big 3 have always tried to set their own precedents, ones like:
charging for online
Charging extra for another gamepad
selling parts that came with a console separately
making exclusivity deals to block competitor systems
Charging higher/lower prices compared to their competition, etc.
Just look at the GPU market, Nvidia has huge market-share and AMD barely has any, so instead of trying to undercut Nvidia, AMD just charges their GPU's slightly cheaper than Nvidia, but very close to Nvidia's asking price, which in turn set a bad precedent for the GPU market.
The same will happen to consoles if Sony gets away with their higher asking price.
This big picture look at things is appreciated and not something I often see.

I can't see Nintendo ever going all digital for the reasons you mentioned but also the fact that players - kids especially - don't have to have an online account to pick up and play games on their devices now or ever even once they are out of production. They must lose a lot of profit to the second hand market but it does serve to maximise brand recognition. In line with what you were saying, it's hard to imagine no shelf presence in toy stores, for instance.
If the reason for the high cost is that they don't expect to sell that many and want to maximise profit from whatever they do then you have to question why they are even bothering. Might not be worth it if the reaction from consumers is so negative it affects them going forward
I'm not sure we should bet on Pokémon Legends Z-A as a cross-gen game, especially given Game Freak's track record on sticking with older hardware while they wait for the new system to build up more of an install base. Granted, I'd imagine that Nintendo would *WANT* PLZA to be cross-gen. But again, that's not really how Game Freak & TPC operate.

Standard model: IPS screen, 128GB, 7 inch screen, 399$
Premium model: OLED screen, 256GB, 8 inch screen, 449$.

It's just too expensive for an impuls buy. PS5 Slim is probably way more competetive for a Switch 2.

This Generation was dominated by Switch, & I doubt the Pro will change anything about that. It's just too niche of a product.
Before the PS5 Pro's reveal, I was convinced that Nintendo would sell the Swtich 2 at $399, expecting a price drop of the PS5 Digital Edition. But after what you've mentioned about components (and the ridiculous $699 price for the PS5 Pro), I don't feel it's likely anymore.
I think we'll be in a 3DS situation where Nintendo will try to sell the Switch 2 at $449, but they'll back up to $399 at a slight loss if sales are low. They could also sell a $499 version with an OLED screen and extra storage space if sales don't meet expectations after the first year or two. I expect cartridge support on both, but a "Switch 2 Lite" might release at $349 after the discontinuation/price drop of the Switch OLED. Not only to cheapen costs but also to make the console smaller, I think the digital-only approach works better with a Lite variant.
They might also experiment with weird bundles or new hardware models, like a "lighter" digital-only Switch Lite by removing the cartridge slot ($199, MK8DX included) or by pricedropping the Switch OLED to $299 but using the V1/V2 dock instead --no Ethernet port.
Nintendo won’t have to back down on price because their switch-indoctrinated cult will make sure the thing sells well anyways.

I just hope switch 2 or what ever it’s called has 16 GB of DDR5 Ram and performance around ps4 Pro or better. So around 4+ Tflops when docked. The biggest issue with current switch is only has 4 Gb of ram. This forced dev to greatly downgrade many Ps4/Xbox port games.
Yeah ps5 pro here is $950 Canadian + tax, depending which Canadian province your in.
So $1000 with no blue Ray disc drive, no stand, and cpu in pro also got ignored, just like they ignored it in ps4 pro. Which did greatly effected some games, being cpu limited. Sony is repeating same mistake with ps5 pro by sticking with same older zen 2 cpu.
Why didn’t go with zen 3 cpu with RDNA3+ GPUs ( it’s NOT RDNA4 gpu, may have some features of RDNA4 but not RDNA4 gpu in ps5 pro). Maybe cus of cost or to keep compatible

But it’s understandable why the price is high. Zen 3 cpu here Canada are still fairly high. 5800x is still going $230 to 250$+ range(Canadian price). And 5700 isn’t much cheaper around $200 usd.
Adjusting for inflation, the N64, Wii, Wii U and Switch fall within a ~£360 - ~£420 range (including VAT, aka 20% tax). I'm not including Gamecube because it was a really cheap console at launch, and got even cheaper as it struggled to sell towards the end of its generation, so unfortunately it's too much of an outlier to be helpful (I'm sorry Gamecube, you know I love you)
I'm expecting the new console's price to be somewhere within that range. With Sony going absolutely mad, Nintendo's main concerns are going to be the Xbox Series X at £480, and the Steam Deck at £350 for the LCD model, and £480 for the OLED model.
I think they'll probably be able to justify pricing higher than the LCD Steam Deck, but there'll be a lot of downward pressure on the price from that £480 mark. The closer they get to it, the more difficult it'll be for them to justify not having an OLED screen. So I don't think they'll want to be going above £420, which is around the upper bound of that initial range for their previous consoles. That's what makes the most sense to me.

You got a key detail wrong about the PS5 Pro: it's not strictly all-digital. It doesn't come with a disc drive, but it is compatible with the same disc drive add-on they previously released for the slim Digital Edition. Granted, this effectively bumps up the price of the Pro console enthusiasts would actually want even further, with the disc drive costing an additional $80 USD.
One of the big reasons for the removal of disc drives and going all digital is that the disc drives themselves aren't necessarily the cheapest things in the world to make and include.
If the cartridge readers Nintendo uses in thier systems aren't as expensive to manufacture, and don't take up much space inside of the system, then they would have a bit less to gain on going all digital via cutting the manufacturing costs of the hardware.
Conversely, Nintendo has the most to gain from going digital as manufacturing a cartridge for the Switch is several times more expensive than a dual layered Blu-Ray disc. They would see the biggest increase to thier margins by going all digital.
I do think "Switch 2" will allow for physical media, but all-digital is very much on the table for say a "Switch 2 Lite" or an optional revision down the line.
The biggest thing that would expedite the end of physical games are them being sold in few and fewer retailers. It's much harder now to just buy them at the store as fewer and fewer stores carry a decent selection or any at all.
Vinyl is still alive after all these decades. This feels like a frivolous excuse to make Sony look good. So much for their 2013 win in E3.

Yeah if anything it would leave some wiggle room for 450 as the price. 400 would be nice and is a direct shot at Sony. But 450 depending on what they add might be a good price as well. And isn't trying to sell on raytracing or frames the console can not get.
I think it would be smart to put the Steam Deck and OLED on your chart of competitors.

6:25 Why is the PS5 often seen as a rather tepid seller? From what I've seen in raw numbers, the console is performing about as well as the PS4 did, selling year for year similar hardware numbers. Maybe software sales are worse, I don't know. I definitely often hear that people see less of a reason to get a PS5 over a PS4 since the games don't feel that much better to the average guy. But the console still has a sizeable audience. So I'd assume a PS5 Pro is as valuable to Sony as a PS4 Pro was in it's own day.

If Nintendo is able to really push the Switch 2 in docked mode and offer a truly compelling living room experience the Switch 2 will definitely be $499. If the docked mode continues to be a relative weakness I think they should price Switch 2 at $399.
Question, I thought being docked was when the switch was at its best? Cause from what I understand unless this got fixed with oled version. I only have a first model switch so I do not know.
@@coreywong6229 Docked games on Switch will typically run at a slightly higher resolution but you are also blowing that image up on a large 4K television. The Switch has always been a much more impressive handheld than it is a home console for that reason. 540-720p on a 5-6” screen looks nice but 720-900p on a 4K television doesn’t always look so great. That is my point. They need a bigger improvement to image quality in docked mode.

I think a digital only switch is unlikely due to the limited storage space on a portable console. Game sizes will increase again, but Nintendo will still stick with the cartridges.
An announcement from Nintendo in the next weeks showing the Switch 2 and it's price became a bit more credible. Especially if the Nintendo Switch 2 is over 400$, Sony tanked the backlash for them.
All Nintendo needs to do is have their entire Switch 2 reveal consist of someone walking up to the podium and saying "$299." to win the console wars twice in a row right then and there. Sony has lined themselves up like ducks in a row for Nintendo with their ludicrous PS5 Pro price tag (and not showing off any actual games that would take advantage of the upgraded hardware was a major boo-boo), and Xbox is running on fumes these days. (And their newer XSX models are even MORE expensive, iirc)

Nintendo really doesn't have to do anything other than what they are already doing. There's a reason they had been a success for all these years. Of course, they had a few hiccups here and there and do have some problems they need to fix. But, when in terms of games and their ideologies, they are second to none.
Nintendo, the ball is in your park, everything seems to favor your launch to save gaming consoles suffering. Please dont ruin this. 400 -450 USD with backward compatibility for cartridges and PS4 Pro specs thats all we ask lol.
I think Nintendo's biggest competition will be the Steam Deck and handheld gaming PCs. The Nintendo exclusives will always carry them, but Microsoft will always have PC versions and Sony has been porting heavily as well. I had a launch PS3 and felt I'd never get another console after that, but Switch offered enough appeal to get me back from just PC gaming.

I bought my PS5 Disc drive used for about 520 USD back in January this year, pretty good deal on my end as it cost about 577 USD here in Sweden at launch AND I got it with two controllers. But it took me selling my PS4 Pro (I didn't own a PS4 regular) to get there, and I am just gonna say it- if I make the upgrade I will most certainly not be buying it without a disc drive, or for the asking price.
I want to buy one simply because I want all things to always go faster, but I can overpower my gluttony for GPU-power from my greed and wish to hold on to money rather than spend it on an incremental upgrade I'm not exactly fiending for. Just feels like this is not an appealing package all in all, but I won't say Sony has lost their marbles until I have seen the sales numbers. They ARE more or less the only game in town with Microsoft being in such shambles, so if they manage to drain those like me but with less restraint / bigger wallets... well. That's a victory for them, I suppose.
They say PS5 PRO is only for the enthusiast. But who doesn't want to pay their games in 60 FPS without looking like shit? I can see why PC gamers pitty console gamers.
Just nope on Sony's move being sensible. It's just pure arrogance and greed. Can sum it up that simply. They know they can get away with it because thanks to Microsoft falling apart and Nintendo doing its own thing they have no actual competition. It's the same greed play they made with the PS3 except they actually put more value into that machine first.
I think the future proofing argument for both is ridiculous. This is an economic downturn. Buying food is more difficult for people. Overpricing a console so it doesn't sell now but maybe it'll sell in the future when people aren't poor isn't a good plan. And it's a worse strategy for Nintendo. They are going to drop a new console. The last thing they need is that console struggling because they overpriced it in hopes that it would be future proof. It'll probably be backwards compatible. But they can't afford to have a WiiU situation on their hands. Price it respectably so people will actually buy it!

Xbox has it's own problem: The Series S.
Microsoft is demanding that that all games released have feature parity between both the Series S and the Series X, which has effectively hamstrung developers because of how little RAM the Series S has. Hearing devs complain about publicly it in their studio's discord servers is somewhat alarming.
As far as I am aware, they have only waived this requirement once: Baldur's Gate 3 was allowed to drop Splitscreen Co-op support for the Series S.
Nintendo may not think Sony is competition, but I think deep down they are a bit nervous about the PlayStation’s future. I mean you know what they say about history and those that don’t learn about it and considering Nintendo and its history with Sony they have to have some concerns about the company and how they do video games in terms of quality.

Talking about all digital and preservation. People are returning to Music CD's because of the anti consumer practices by the publishers when it comes to digital / streaming only. Another good example is the recent Alan Wake update that removed licenced music. Even those who bought a copy are loosing what they paid for. However those with Alan Wake on physical media are immune from this bad faith action.
I wonder if Nintendo has been waiting for this announcement before they make the Super Switch announcement. Either some NSO package or partnership with Microsoft for Game Pass on Super Switch and this would be a fun reversal of the Sony price announcement. Some PC person (I suppose not Gabe because he's all about Steam) should make an announcement about how easy it is to add a disk drive to PC too.
I really feel like people should look for an alternative to PS. Like a Pc. If you get that along with a steam deck, albeit expensive, you get way more for your buck than a PS5 pro. Plus you have more to do on Pc than simply gaming.
399$ makes a lot of sense for the Switch 2 because they have made a mountain of money with the Switch 1. If the success of the Wii could cover the failure of the WiiU and allow for the Switch to release at 299$, then it's even more probable for the Switch 2 to release at a cheap price, in order to sell as many units as possible.
Don't think I agree with you on this one. Pricing this high or "future proofing" will just hurt in the long run. There are plenty of people that wanted to get the pro, or upgrade but not at this price point, especially when nothing of the original PS5 comes with it (disk drive, and stand). So I think PS is shooting themselves in the foot with this one
PS5 Pro feels overpriced. If it was cheaper I might be tempted, but I'd rather wait until all its games come to PC.

Your point of Nintendo coming out with a fourth and final “all digital” console is really interesting! That would be a really ingenious way to bridge that gap honestly.
I still feel like a final “docked only” (apple-tv-esque) switch would be an easy play for a cheap final way in to the market (with no screen and stuff, that could honestly be $150 or even $100 if they don’t include a controller!) And if that were all digital, that would be two birds with one stone too.

but physical stores and malls won't exist by the end of this decade. plus, people just don't leave their house as much as they used to.
I don't think many Aussies would be rushing out to buy a Switch 2 if it was $800+ AUD
