The thing with Sgt Pepper is that you almost always have to listen to the whole album, the album as a whole is amazing and is worth the praise. The thing with Magical Mystery Tour is that the album as a whole is great but the stand-alone songs are absolutely amazing. With Sgt Pepper, you’re there for the experience and with mmt, the songs are just there. In my personal opinion, Sgt Peppers will always be my favorite album of all time and there’s a reason for that, though mmt is just a good mashup of amazing songs, it doesn’t have that feel of Sgt Peppers or the provoking emotions it gives off. Both hold a special place in my heart (if not all of their albums) but i see Sgt Peppers as the superior.
I think one reason Magical Mystery Tour is often left out when compared to Sgt. Pepper is that originally in the UK it was only intended to be a soundtrack to the film. In the UK the album was released only as a six track 7” EP rather than a full length album. It was only in the United States where it was released as a full length album due to Capitol records adding on extra tracks and singles such as Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, Hello Goodbye, and All You Need Is Love. It is important to note that these four tracks did not appear on the EP as it was released it the UK. John Lennon himself in interviews during the period expressed dissatisfaction with how Magical Mystery Tour was released in the US as he stated that the band did not intend for it to be a full length LP release, rather just a soundtrack for the film. This is partially why the album may seem disjointed. However, the US album version became very popular and has since become the only Capitol reconfiguration to become a standard of the Beatles discography.
I always thought it funny people thinking SP was a 'groundbreaking" album when Pet Sounds, The Doors first album, the Yardbirds Roger the Engineer, Donovan, and several others pre-dated SP by at least half a year and it is painfully obvious the Beatles were massively influenced by those artists and not the other way around. SP & MMT are amazing albums, I have them both but when people claim the Beatles were pioneers, they are just wrong, they were however the most successful in putting all the pieces together and SP is far superior to those earlier albums including Pet Sounds.
So many of my favorite Beatles albums are on magical mystery tour, but I do agree that Sgt Peppers is the overall more cohesive album. Btw just discovered your channel and I love it! Maybe you could do one on David Bowie?
@@yootoober2009 I commented this 2 years ago, get a life. Gatekeeping doesn't look too charming on you. There are plenty of kids out there learning who the Beatles are, that need an introduction rather than a quiz. I know that my favorite song on that album is SFF, but that doesn't change how dumb your question is.
Nicely produced video. There are definitely some amazing songs on MMT. The reason that it's not as cohesive or celebrated though, is that it's not really an album. Nor was it ever intended to be. In the Beatles' home country, the UK, the movie songs (side one of the album) came out as a double EP with no accompanying album. In the US (where Capitol often cannibalised Beatles albums & singles to milk their catalogue), they put out a Magical Mystery Tour album with very little thought or care. Also EPs weren't particularly popular in the US at the time. Side one of the US album is the UK double EP and side 2 is made up of all the singles & b-sides released that year which hadn't appeared on an album before. So, side 1 is kind of the 'concept' album and side 2 is a 1967 'greatest hits' [In the UK, the EP made number 2 in the singles charts, kept off the top spot by Hello Goodbye].
@@yootoober2009 If you're looking at it as an album, then Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, I Am The Walrus, All You Need Is Love are absolutely top drawer. MMT, Fool On The Hill, Baby You're A Rich Man, Hello Goodbye make up a very strong album. Flying is where the 'album' starts to fall apart and reveal itself as the movie soundtrack EP it really was - but padded out with (stellar) hit singles from the same year to create a US album. I do have a soft spot for Your Mother Should Know - it works well as a set piece at the end of the 'movie' with the Beatles doing the cheesy, tongue-in-cheek walk down the staircase in white tuxes.
I 100% agree with you. People only like mmt cause of the singles they put on it. If people heard the UK version they wouldn't say it's better than Pepper's but the us version with the singles push it over Pepper's in amazing music
Wait the video is so good I like how it’s short/quick and it gets straight to the point 10/10 😋 -also I totally agree with what you said magical mystery tour did feel like just a collection of songs but I’ve heard Lucy in the sky with diamonds a billion times-
Magical Mystery Tour is more of a compilation of previously released singles and a few new songs. Each song on Pepper was brand new when the album was released. Magical Mystery Tour was more of a cash grab for the record label.
i usually listen to white album and sgt pepper (mostly because i just recently got into the beatles lol) but mmt is waay trippier than sgt pepper. you should listen to mgmt if youre into psychedelic rock
The MMT album was released in UK in 1976. The UK version was always an EP in 1967. US was not into EPs so they added Singles previously released by the Beatles. So its Part Soundtrack and part compilation. While Sgt. Pepper was an album produced in its entirety. The album had the same tracklisting in both UK and US. No comparison.
Sgt. Pepper is ground breaking for it's time. In June 1967 no one had ever heard an album like it before. Imagine a major band today releasing unheard sounds with new studio technology and instruments inventing new concepts in album design. An album so commercial and experimental at the same time that it influences multitudes of other artists. It's not easy to accomplish something as bold and innovative as that. On the other hand Magical Mystery Tour has equally great songs as Sgt. Pepper. In fact you could consider MMT as the first video album as every song (except Baby You're a Rich Man) has a visual film attached to it. The film is essentially there to string together the musical moments. What held back MMT vs. Sgt. Pepper was that it was released as a double e.p. What the Beatles should have done was to add the songs recorded in 1967 for the Yellow Submarine film to complete a full album. The track listing could have been: Side One: Magical Mystery Tour/Fool on the Hill/Blue Jay Way/Flying/Your Mother Should Know/I Am The Walrus. Side Two: Hello Goodbye/Only A Northern Song/All Together Now/It's All Too Much/You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) released in December 1967. Not only were all these songs recorded in the same year but they have a psychedelic approach which makes for a cohesive album. The US version sounds good but breaks the Beatles approach of keeping singles separate from albums. The UK version would have been a great addition to the Beatles discography. In early 1968 they could have released a 4 track e.p. Lady Madonna/Hey Bulldog/The Inner Light/Across The Universe.
I think SPLHCB is the last purely Beatles Album. Every album after that is the more or less John, Paul, and George's solo ideas combined under a Beatles title. They became more individualistic and you can hear it in the later tracks. Listen to all of their first solo albums, and they're similar to the style songs they wrote in the Beatles towards the end of the career. Sure they would write lines or licks here and there, but for the most part they began to write more separately.
Yes it most definitely is. However I understand Sgt Pepper isn't great for it's individual songs but for the whole concept album thing... Which in itself is an experience no other Beatles album can provide
Sgt. Pepper was constructed as a full album while Magical Mystery Tour was compiled from a double e.p. & 3 singles all from 1967. What would have made more sense was leave the 3 singles as singles and construct Magical Mystery Tour from the double e.p., the four songs from the Yellow Submarine soundtrack and the original Across The Universe all of which were recorded in 1967. Side One: 1. Magical Mystery Tour 2. Fool on the Hill 3. Flying 4. Blue Jay Way 5. Your Mother Should Know 6. I Am The Walrus Side Two: 1. Hello, Goodbye 2. Hey Bulldog 3. Only A Northern Song 4. Across The Universe 5. All Together Now 6. It's All Too Much
Ngl..... I kinda like magical mystery tour better Both are great but i just kept listening to magical mystery tour more often And can u do a video on queen?
As a recent Beatles listener I stopped my self from listening to some of there songs on my phone so I can hear the full album first on record ,I got sgt peppers July 2020 and loved it and listened to it on repeat like the rest of the world but got magical mystery tour in September of 2020 and even today it’s still like listening to it for the first time every time I play it especially with the music on the A side of the album
Well... it's because it's an E.P where the B-side consists only of pre-released singles, whereas Sgt.Peppers is a full album, and the songs go into eachother (which was a new concept at the time)... Also, I think the songs on Sgt Peppers are more memorable... (Revolver is better than both of them in my opinion)
wow this was pretty good! you definitely deserve more attention. also in terms of the albums, I myself prefer Sgt Peppers. I don’t really know why, but Magical Mystery Tour is one of my least favourite Beatles albums, even though it has so many great songs on it.
Of the two albums, Magical Mystery Tour is the one I listen to most. But remember, the songs on side one appeared in their teleplay, while the songs on side two were supposed to be on the Sgt. Pepper album.
Really good comparison. Question: What format do you listen to these in? Digital? Analog? I ask because for those that havent, Revolver/SgtPep/MMT in George Martins original mono mix heard from an all analog recording chain is a real eye opener for any Beatle freak.
First thing's first: It could be interesting to have a video on "Exile On Main Street", if you have some thoughts on the album! Amongst others why THIS is the album Rolling Stone Magazine picked as number 7 on their list "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" (which "Sgt. Pepper's" won) And then to the thoughts on this video: I find it to be a very interesting thought, and I must say that I don't really understand why so many like "Sgt. Pepper's" for the simple fact that it doesn't have hits. The track listing is good, it somehow manages to feel like the songs are connected to one another without really understanding how, but it doesn't REALLY have any of their big hits. The closest is "With A Little Help From My Friends". And not even that was included on their compilation "1". While "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Penny Lane", "I Am The Walrus" and "All You Need Is Love" are all songs that pretty much "everyone" has heard of. Still: I listen a lot more to "Sgt. Pepper's" as an album, and just include songs from "Magical Mystery Tour" on playlists myself, though the original EP is just full of songs I really love, like "The Fool On The Hill", "Flying", and "Your Mother Should Know". Interesting video. Keep it up!
Outside of America The Beatles had a policy of keeping singles separate, that meant albums always had new material. Also songs could fit into the album concept than be seen as single standouts. In America they did things differently because their record company there controlled things. So compilations were issued with singles on (like MMT) rather than the original albums).
Magical Mystery Tour, flying, Your Mother Should Know, The Fool On The Hill, I Am The Walrus, and Strawberry Fields Forever... Of these six songs, how many can you sing or hum? or stand out?
Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane were the first songs recorded for the Sgt. Pepper album. However, there was a feeling that the Beatles were taking too long to put out new music (remember that they were basically putting out new music every few months back then), so they released the songs as a single. In what even producer George Martin admits was a mistake, these songs were left off the album. MMT was issued in the UK as an EP (extended play) with a fewer number of songs. In the US, Capitol turned it into a full album. Both are fantastic albums, but imagine what Sgt. Pepper's would have been if it had SFF and PL on it instead of some weaker tracks!
A lot of my top favorite Beatles songs come from Magical Mystery Tour like Hello Goodbye and Penny Lane. For me it’s a very close second behind Sgt. Pepper’s but before Revolver.
The only new music was on side one of the original LP…side two (Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, All you Need is Love…etc) had already been released as singles. In fact Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane came out before Sgt. Pepper’s. Hence, no one looks at Magical Mystery Tour and sees it as anything special. The only interesting new song was I am the Walrus. If you look at it non-historically, I would agree with the premise that MMT is the equal of SP’s but you can’t undo the fact that half the album is a compilation of previously released material. That’s why Magical Mystery Tour doesn’t seem cohesive.,,.it was never meant to be. In fact, MMT was not released as an album in the UK, at the time...it was an American only release, in album form. In the UK it was released as an EP comprising of only side #1's content. The American release had all the previously released singles tacked on, for good measure.
I actually like to place both Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band AND Magical Mystery Tour on an equal level; they both have great songs, are both very colorful and perfectly represent the year of 1967 rather brilliantly. it is also fun to hear them both in succession
I think it’s really important to understand that Magical Mystery Tour was never meant to be an album. It was sold as an album in the US, but in the UK, it was released as it‘s supposed to be: a double EP (the first one ever at that) that is simply the soundtrack to the film. Just the first 6 songs, and in slightly different order. The last 6 songs are singles and were never meant to be on an album. Magical Mystery Tour is not Sgt. Pepper’s’s successor; the White Album is. MMT is just a ‘side project’, and a darn good one at that.
MMT is a collection of 1967 singles and outtakes from the British television movie. Sgt Pepper is the first concept album which somehow maintained continuity through brilliant, disparate idioms. It's superior. However, both are integral to the Beatles greatest year of 1967. I would call MMT footnotes to Sgt. Pepper or bonus material. I thought MMT to be a great, historic art film. McCartney compared it to "Un Chien Andalou." Hyberbole but correct.
Magical Mystery Tour may not have been the groundbreaking concept album that Sgt Pepper was - it may not even have been an album in the traditional sense... but the best songs on it are just better than anything that's on Sgt Peppers - end of.
mmt is somehow more conhesive than sgt peppers despite not even being concieved as a record. i also just think mmt beats sgt peppers on amount of great songs. Fool on the hill, Walrus, Hello Goodbye, Penny Lane, Strawberry fields, All u need is love. they all sounds pretty similar in vibe and instrumentation
If only George Martin would have put Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever on Sgt Pepper Album. That would have made it the best album of all time. I prefer Sgt Pepper Bc of Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds and A Day In The Life.
I agree we have the same opinion. Lucy and day are the best songs on Pepper's. But the same could be said for mmt if Lucy and day were on mmt. Then mmt would be the best album ever
MMTour was originally an EP, if the US in their wisdom added a few extra fantastic songs to Pepper it would be even more amazing. But I skip When I'm 64 as well. Maybe a topic could be which tracks do you skip on Beatles albums? Or any other.
Sgt Peppers is overrated af, alot of the experimental stuff is done just for the sake of being out there. Magical mystery is way better. Sgt peppers is still a good album tho. But even the concept isn't that strong after a few songs, just a loose concept. Who gives a damn if mmt doesn't flow well, still way better.
Ehh, idk. Its hard to decide really. Personally i do agree that some tracks in Sgt. Pepper are overated, and for me Sgt. Pepper's is my 3rd favourite beatles album , and magical mystery tour in a close 5th, so i may be a bit biased here, but i do think magical myster tour is pretty good. Mmt is great, but it doesnt really reach the influence and impact Sgt Pepper's continiues to have on the music industry today, and will undoubtedly continiue to have for many many many years from now. Its still a good album tho!
Sgt Pepper’s is rather overrated in my opinion. I do like it, and its got a few great tracks on it, but I feel half of it isnt very memorable, and the Beatles have definitely made better albums, like The White Album and Abbey Road, which are both phenomenal (obviously).
The White Album is the album that I have on repeat mode most often. Second one is Abbey Road. Followed by Revolver. Sgt and MMT are very drunk version of Paul McCartney, just not enough of John' rock and roll which is in essence the truer core of what the Beatles music is all about
Well to be honest between these 2 great Beatles albums I much prefer listening to Magical Mystery Tour more often than Sgt.Pepper?, some of the songs on Sgt.Pepper are great but I'm not very keen on hearing "She's Leaving Home", "Within You Without You" or "When I'm 64" very much compare to all the great songs on Magical Mystery Tour?, honestly when it comes to greatest album of all time I reckon The White Album & Abbey Road are definitely much greater than Sgt.Pepper??, the way both THOSE albums are recorded stands out far better & greater than Sgt.Pepper for not only The Beatles but also as in the category of all-time greatest albums?, if l had to decide between The White Album or Abbey Road as greater than Sgt.Pepper it would be Abbey Road... definitely!!
If each individual song is better than each individual song. Then the album with Better songs is the better album. People are just too respectful of the Beatles official albums. Mmt isn't even an official canon album. But if you played both albums without knowing the history or context of either. 100% of people would say mmt is better than sgt
The thing with Sgt Pepper is that you almost always have to listen to the whole album, the album as a whole is amazing and is worth the praise. The thing with Magical Mystery Tour is that the album as a whole is great but the stand-alone songs are absolutely amazing. All of them...
Well for a start it contains the greatest pop song ever written, in Strawberry Fields Forever.
Nice vid
Magical Mystery Tour may not have been the groundbreaking concept album that Sgt Pepper was - it may not even have been an album in the traditional sense... but the best songs on it are just better than anything that's on Sgt Peppers - end of.
mmt is somehow more conhesive than sgt peppers despite not even being concieved as a record. i also just think mmt beats sgt peppers on amount of great songs. Fool on the hill, Walrus, Hello Goodbye, Penny Lane, Strawberry fields, All u need is love. they all sounds pretty similar in vibe and instrumentation
The second half of Magical Mystery Tour IS actually just a compilation of great songs... the singles from 1967 to be exact.
Hi, came here just to say NO , goodnight
Magical mystery is probably the album I’ve listened to most, but as a cohesive, concept I think sgt pepper is the superior
I don't know there both bloody brilliant i see them as a double album like if the beatles still were sgt pepper
Love ur content u deserve 1m subs
Edit: 5m
MMTour was originally an EP, if the US in their wisdom added a few extra fantastic songs to Pepper it would be even more amazing. But I skip When I'm 64 as well. Maybe a topic could be which tracks do you skip on Beatles albums? Or any other.
Your Mother Should Know is weaker than When I'm 64, very repetitive.
I agree 💯. Song for song mmt is better.
It is like Radiohead's Kid A/Amnesiac.
Sgt and MMT are very drunk version of Paul McCartney, just not enough of John' rock and roll which is in essence the truer core of what the Beatles music is all about
Yup
And Abbey roud to
Well to be honest between these 2 great Beatles albums I much prefer listening to Magical Mystery Tour more often than Sgt.Pepper?, some of the songs on Sgt.Pepper are great but I'm not very keen on hearing "She's Leaving Home", "Within You Without You" or "When I'm 64" very much compare to all the great songs on Magical Mystery Tour?, honestly when it comes to greatest album of all time I reckon The White Album & Abbey Road are definitely much greater than Sgt.Pepper??, the way both THOSE albums are recorded stands out far better & greater than Sgt.Pepper for not only The Beatles but also as in the category of all-time greatest albums?, if l had to decide between The White Album or Abbey Road as greater than Sgt.Pepper it would be Abbey Road... definitely!!
YES
MMT's better if you look at each individual song, but SPLHCB is better on a greater whole.
I don't agree, the weakest MMT songs are weaker than anything on Pepper.
If each individual song is better than each individual song. Then the album with Better songs is the better album.
People are just too respectful of the Beatles official albums. Mmt isn't even an official canon album. But if you played both albums without knowing the history or context of either.
100% of people would say mmt is better than sgt
Aww, when I'm 64 is coo000OOl.. I actually don't LOVE Lucy😳
yes
1 is the best Beatles album
n. F. But that’s a compilation
No, but Pepper is the most overrated album in rock history.
MMT "stole" its two best songs from SPLHCB.
Do Abba!....here come the chicks 🙃😂
Just Do The Beatles
Yeah it's better
Sgt Pepper is wildly overrated -- one of the worst Beatles albums.
Yes, didn't watch.
