DRIVER'S EYE VIEW - Lynton & Barnstaple Railway - Plus the Dulverton Heritage Centre Model Railway

  • The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway closed too early for the preservation movement to step in and take it over before it was dismantled and sold off. As the reopening of the Welsh Highland Railway has shown, nothing is impossible. Today the L&B gives us a tantalising glimpse of the future with its beautifully restored Woody Bay station and the first section of the old track-bed reinstated to offer passengers wonderful views over the magnificent Devon countryside.
The 19 miles (31 km) line first opened in May 1898 as a single track, narrow gauge railway passing through the rugged and picturesque area bordering Exmoor in North Devon. In 1923 the L&B was taken over by the Southern Railway bringing much needed investment and marketing expertise, sadly the decline continued with the railway eventually closing in September 1935. That might well have been the end of the story had not the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Association been formed in 1979 marking the start of a new dawn as a heritage railway.
Today’s passengers are hauled by authentic recreations of the original locomotives and carriages allowing visitors to slip back in time to the days when travellers to the Devon coast enjoyed the last leg of their journey to holiday destinations such as Lynton, Lynmouth and Combe Martin aboard a diminutive L&B train.
Those early travellers would have arrived at Barnstaple on mainline trains before transferring to a waiting narrow gauge L&B railway train.
In this video we join our train at Woody Bay for a trip to the temporary terminus at Killington Lane.
We also take a look at some of the seaside resorts those early travellers might have been visiting for their holidays.
Finally we take a look at the amazing model railway housed at the Dulverton Heritage Centre.

Hi, I try to contact railways before I visit to ask permission, most heritage railways are very helpful, they know people enjoy forward views and that some of those watching might be inspired to take a ride on their next visit to the area. I use tiny GoPro cameras because they are quick and easy to fit, also being so small they don't spoil other peoples photograghs of the locomotive. I imagine a good number of your viewers have paid a visit to the WSR after watching your videos, its all good advertising. Happy New Year, I hope it's a good one. All the best. Tim.

G'Vday Tim, as usual a great video. I am writing this comment on a warm 29.8C cloudless day on duty at Menzies Creek on Puffing Billy Railway having just departed the last Down Train of the day Lakeside this hauled by Baldwin Loco NA 2-6-2T No.7A. Hello Pete, it's 13C here on very damp day, there are one or two heritage railways running mince pie specials for another day or two before everything closes down for a couple of months until the Spring Gala Season kicks off. I'm usually setting off to NZ and OZ around this this of year, I wonder how long it will be before I can do that again? I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Happy New Year and hopefully it won't be too long before we catch up again. Cheers. Tim.

Aah, Tim. You're always coming up with the good stuff! This was fascinating. Sort-of reminded me of the Ravenglass-to-Eskdale narrow-gauge line operated by scaled-down locos and carriages(about one-fifth the size of regular locos & carrianges that I saw while transferring VHS videotape to digital for a neighbour who had since moved to Central NSW to be with family. She was from England and went back for a visit to catch up with her parents. While there she visited a few locations, the Ravenglass-to-Eskdale railway being one of them. Cheers, Tim! Like the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway it is narrow gauge, where it differs is that this is a full size railway whereas the Ratty is a miniature railway like those found on seafronts and in parks around the country. There is one 5 minutes walk from my home, maybe I should ask the driver to allow me to place a camera on the engine ☺☺. Happy New Year. Tim. 🌲🌲🎅🎅☺☺.

@@TamaraComerfordI hope you found the information useful. There are many different facets to running a railway, it's much more than a train running on rails, I love the history behind the original reasons the railways were built, such as the branch lines in Devon and Cornwall serving tiny communities that were destined to become popular holiday resorts, in many cases the railway has gone now, but their legacy is the seaside towns holiday makers still flock to such as Ilfracombe and Padstow.

Hello Larrisa, North Devon is a beautiful unspoiled part of the country, with deep river valleys and heather covered high-ground. Our Victorian forefathers have left us with some wonderful, quirky legacies such as the funicular railway, the narrow gauge railway is also very much a product of the age (early 1900's) sadly it wasn't able to fend off competition from road transport, but it's looking very likely that the British love for the past will bring at least part if not all of the Barnstaple and Lynton Railway back to life. Happy New Year. Best wishes from Tim and Karen 🌲🎅😊.
