  • The Barnstaple to Ilfracombe branch opened in 1874 and closed to all traffic on 5th October 1970. The line began at the current station which was then called Barnstaple Junction and after crossing the River Taw on a viaduct then served stations at Barnstaple Town, Wrafton, Braunton, Mortehoe and then dropped down a steep gradient, through the only tunnel on the line at Slade, before reaching Ilfracombe, the end of the line. Some of the former track bed is now a footpath and cycleway although abandoned and overgrown segments still remain around the midway point.

Had to say my thanks for this. We moved away from North Devon for a while and my daughter was born here and all her family are north Devon area, in fact one even worked on the railway line as a clerk in the late 1800s. So it's lovely to see the old line route, especially when you know you have driven passed it day-in, day-out! Used to love cycling the Tarka Trail from Torrington either way too! Many thanks again.

Excellent video, Mr '72. I was there last week myself. Easy to trace and ride eace end of the old line but clearly the middle bit after Braunton is much less obvious, thank you for filling in the gap ! My aunt lived close to Mortehoe station before moving to Knowle in '84.
