  • The Welsh Highland Railway - 'WHR' - (Welsh: Rheilffordd Eryri) is a restored narrow gauge railway located in the Welsh county of Gwynedd. The 25-mile (40.2 km) long 1 ft 11 ½ in (597 mm) gauge line connects Caernarfon to Porthmadog, the line passes through the scenic Aberglaslyn Gorge as well as serving the popular tourist village of Beddgelert. The railway shares Porthmadog Harbour station with the Ffestiniog Railway's line to Blaenau Ffestiniog. One of the line's notable features is the United Kingdom's only mixed gauge flat rail crossing.
During restoration most of the civil engineering was undertaken by contractors whilst the track was laid by volunteers. The original WHR ran from Porthmadog to Dinas, where it connected with the standard gauge Caernarfon to Afon Wen line. The modern day WHR uses the track bed of the long closed Afon Wen line to access its modern Caernarfon terminus in the shadow of the city's impressive castle, conveniently situated close to both the harbour and the town centre.
Bryngwyn and the slate quarries around Moel Tryfan were served by a short branch off the original WHR, the old branch line trackbed is now a footpath know as the "rail trail".
The 3/4 mile (1.2 km) long Welsh Highland Heritage Railway runs from its station close to the Cambrian Coast Railway's Porthmadog station along the trackbed of the former Cambrian Railways exchange siding to connect to the WHR main line at Pen-y-Mount junction.

The Welsh Highland Railway is a bit special, the scenery is beautiful and with the changing seasons and unpredictable weather, no two tips are the same.

I once made the trip from Rhyd Ddu to Beddgelert during a Superpower event. It was windy, but still more or less dry at Rhyd Ddu, so I chose to enter the "toast rack" car because I like semi-open cars, because it was directly behind the locomotive, and because many seats where empty (I wonder why?). But then it started to rain, and because of the S bends everything inside the carriage became wet, including the benches, so shifting from the wet to the dry side when passing a bend wasn't really solving the problem. I still would make the same decision next time!

@@fritz46 I must visit one of the superpower events, they look like a nice way to spend a day or two. I read your comment and smiled to myself, because I'd have done exactly as you did and like you, knowing there was a good chance of getting a good soaking, I'd still ride in the "toast rack" car 😊.

This excellent video brings back some memories. I traveled on this a few years ago with some friends and managed to film some little snippets here and there but it's nice to see it in it's entirety on this delightful film. Beautiful scenery all the way. It did rain a lot when I was on it though. Thank you for uploading.🙂

Hello Michael, I'm glad this video brought back pleasant memories from your own trip on the Welsh Highland Railway. Wales wouldn't be the beautiful place it is without the rain fall, although to be fair the sun does come out occasionally and when it does there a few better places in the world to be. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

I have to agree with you, there are few more interesting or scenic railways to be found anywhere, I've loved watching this railway go from an abandoned track bed to a fully functioning railway, a real life story of the phoenix raising from the ashes.

The locomotives are as big as a mainline locomotive, yet they runs on rails a little under 2 feet apart. Its well worth doing the whole journey between Caernarfon and Porthmadog to appreciate the ever changing scenery. If you do make it to the railway, I'm sure you'll find it a rewarding experience.
