Thank you from an old man who remembers when this line was a part of the slow easy and comfortable ( South East and Chatham) railway. In the 1950's I travelled every inch of the remaining Southern Railway, from the East of Kent as far as Weymouth in the west. I might be the only person left who did it! My great grandmother remembered the excitement when the first line from London to Whitstable linked the Canterbury line to London through Faversham, Sittingbourne, Chatham and Strood. You captured a little bit of the wonderful days of hop gardens and cherry orchards of my youth!
They are some wonderful memories to have, when I see old film of the railway and the people it looks idyllic, no one is in a hurry, people have time to appreciate life, even the people working as hop pickers looked relaxed. Maybe that is the way the photographer intended to portray the scene, you will know better than me, having lived in those times. I think today's K&ESR is doing a wonderful job recreating a window on the past, allowing youngsters to see the world their grandparents grew up in. We are lucky in the South in that a good deal of the rail network has survived, it was mainly branch and some secondary lines that were lost. The preservation movement has done a fantastic job saving closed railways for us to enjoy today such as the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, the Bluebell Railway, the Mid Hants Railway, the Swanage Railway, the Sittingbourne Railway to name just a few. We owe a huge debt of thanks to those who ignored the realities, dug deep into their pockets and worked their socks off to give us the preservation movement we have today. Living history is so much better than static exhibits in museums. The K&ESR represents everything I love about heritage railways and visitors are guaranteed a warm welcome. Thank you for sharing your memories, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.
Excellent. Beautifully edited. Great to have the ‘lineside’ and other features - including the views of and to Bodiam Castle with detail at the stations. Thank you
The castle is the icing on the cake, no visit to the K&ESR is complete without calling in to have a look around and enjoy a cream tea in the cafe. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.
Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. I hope you and your son enjoyed the railway as much as I did, were you visiting or working on the railway? The behind the scenes tour is a must for people who want to take a look in those buildings that are normally off limits, the signalman, our guide and the guy who told us about the railway's history, in fact everyone we met made this a very special day out. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this tour. The bacon sandwiches were pretty good too.

@@modernandheritagerailwaysa7375 Hi, it's always nice to chat to the volunteers during quieter moments when they are not so busy. I have visited the line every two or three years since the first trains ran, it has always been a friendly and welcoming experience leaving me looking forward to my next visit. Now you have explained who all the people are, I do remember everyone, it was fun to ride the footplate to see and hear the driver and fireman working together. I am not very good at remembering names, there are times when it would be handy to have someone with me noting the names of the train crew so that their names can be included in the video, assuming they don't mind. I see what Will is doing at the Watercress Line, building a channel dedicated to the railway where the volunteers get the chance to tell people what they are doing and why. The railway also has an interesting future with the prospect of trains returning to Robertsbridge. My UA-cam channel is a hobby, for my day job I am a toolmaker, so I appreciate the work required to bring a scrapyard wreck back to life, looking as good as new. I am tempted to take you up on your offer, it would be nice to let the volunteers tell viewers what it is like to work on the railway from lighting up in the early morning right though to putting the locomotives to bed at the end of the day. I live in Bognor Regis so it is a bit of a drive to the railway, but if you think it is something that might work, please let me know, maybe you have some ideas of your own. It would be nice to cover some of the milestones the railway has to overcome to reach Robertsbridge. Please say "Hi and thank you" to Ben. I'll definitely make sure I visit more often, from the viewing figures, the K&ESR is certainly proving popular, it would be nice to think that a few of them will visit the line to see it for themselves. Take care. Tim.
Great video! Love K&ESR. My boys had their first ever Santa train ride there, in Dec 1984. (May be wrong, but think the ride only went as far as Rolvenden back then)
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. Santa Specials are still popular with children although Covid stopped them for a while. I believe the railway may only have been open as for as Rolvenden or maybe Wittersham Road back in 1984, I took my children to the railway for the first time in the late eighties, I think the railway was open to Wittersham Road then, it all seems so long ago now.

Hello Robert, living in Britain, I don't always appreciate all the history. I grew up next to Fishbourne Roman Palace, I took Chichester Cathedral along with Arundel Cathedral and Castle for granted. British scenery is varied and beautiful, the only time I really appreciate it is when I've been away for a while. Bodiam Castle is in an idyllic location, sometimes the fields are bright yellow with rapeseed flowers. I've done some repairs to my brother's aircraft recently, he said we must go for another flight soon, so another video in on the radar. I hope Sydney warms up for you, although to us Brits 9c would feel pleasantly warm 🙂.

This part of the country is rich in history being so close to mainland Europe it was a the centre of all conflicts between the two almost from the day Britain broke away from mainland Europe. The result is defensive systems, of which castles are a part, busy ports and associated transport infrastructure, the latest addition, the channel tunnel makes many European countries less than a days train ride away or in the case of France less than an hour away. The area is also very fertile making it rich in fruit and hop farming, although today many of the hop farms now grow grapes for wine making. It is wonderful to see the old carriages restored to their former glory, they no longer speed between the capital and coastal ports, instead the meander through the Kent and East Sussex countryside at a sedate pace allowing diners to savor a delicious meal and the pretty countryside. I haven't shown the town of Tenterden, maybe I should have done so, it is the kind of picturesque town that used to be featured on biscuit tins, I think you'd love the place. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers. Tim.
@@Timsvideochannel1 Thanks for the backstory. I really appreciate your willingness to explain and chat to your fans. Some channel owners can come across somewhat aloof and it's always such a pleasure to see someone like you who is so engaging and kindly. 😃
Hi Tim! Very nice video as always. The steam locomotive has a very good sound and works really well. Exactly the right thing for today's Sunday, because it's raining here again and again. The man at the signal box explains the mechanical safety system without electronics. Once again I didn't understand at least 70% again because he was talking too fast. But I assume that it was about the follow-up and return security. I'm just not that good at English. Best regards from Hans and Cheers 🇦🇹🍻.
Hello Hans, it was nice to do something a little different, this behind the scenes experience took the group into those places not normally open to the public such as the engine sheds, repair shops and signal box. Your English is far better than my German, an English signal box isn't that different to and Austrian one, although they tend to be stand alone buildings rather than part of the station. The levers are quite different to look at, but they perform the same function. The signalman was telling us how the token machines worked (the driver of the train must check and be in possession of the correct token to proceed onto the next section of single line track) the signalman also explained how the interlocking worked to prevent him from setting conflicting routes. Take care, and cheers.🍺Tim.

Hi, fortunately most of the stock and locomotives were at different stages of restoration, most of the items will run again, although for some it might be a long wait. It was nice to see vulnerable older rolling stock stored under cover in the new building, a massive improvement on rotting in open air sidings where there is also at risk of vandalism. I might never see some of the rolling stock in use during my lifetime, but so long as it exists there is a chance it might run again. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. Cheers. Tim.
