DRIVER'S EYE VIEW - West Somerset Railway - Dunster to Washford and an interesting shunt manoeuvre

  • Level crossing work near Minehead meant trains were unable to continue past Dunster to Minehead where run round facilities were available. An alternative method was required to get the train engine from one end of its rake of carriages to the other, this was achieved by using a second locomotive and a siding as shown in this video. Having completed the run round manoeuvre our train was ready to return to Bishops Lydeard. Once again we enjoy a forward view of the line as we head along the coastal section through the attractive station at Blue Anchor before turning inland at Doniford Halt to Williton, home of the “Diesel and Electric Preservation Group”. After a short stop we are on our way again climbing hard towards Washford then its downhill to Watchet. Sadly the camera battery expired before reaching Watchet. For those who would like to see the complete run in the opposite direction please click on this link - • DRIVER'S EYE VIEW - We...
The railway is a standard gauge line, (1,435 mm - 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) located in the South, West of England, easily accessible by car or by bus from Taunton BR station served by regular GWR trains from London and the West Country and CrossCountry trains services from the North and Midlands.

Hello, I'm pleased you enjoyed this video. We are lucky in England to have so many wonderful, varied and interesting heritage railways where we can see steam and diesel trains from the past. I love the sound of a hard working steam locomotive😊

Muitas felicidades. Tim.
Hello, it is unfortunate that long distance train travel is no longer possible in Brazil. Here in the UK a lot of railway lines were closed in the 1960's, fortunately some of those lines were saved by railway enthusiasts to operate as heritage railways today, they rely heavily on volunteer labour.
The mainline network is still extensive, served by regular modern trains. Some of the trains are bi-modal, they can run on electricity or diesel. They start their journey out of the big cities as electric trains often finishing in places like Cornwall and Scotland as diesel trains.
I hope Brazil does start operating long distance trains because it would make life easier for both tourists and Brazilians alike. Best wishes. Tim.

Tim, excellent video that stirred memories of 1961 - a late-summer Scout troop camp in the Quantocks, near Nether Stowey and a ride on the steam powered Minehead Railway, via Blue Anchor & Dunster - before Butlins opened. Even saw a showroom glimpse of a first E-type Jag, during the ‘furniture removals van’ trip back home - whilst perching upon folded tents & piles of rucksacks. (Wouldn’t pass H&S standards now). Lovely countryside. Loved your “Beam me up, Scotty” moment, with the ground frame operator edit!

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  2 роки тому +1

Hi Peter, I hope the ground frame operator was returned safely back to planet earth 😊. You saw the line when it was still part of the national network, those scout camps were fun, do they still do that kind of thing today. Great memories to have, thanks for sharing them. Cheers. Tim.

Tim, I would not have a clue about what takes place now - in the Scout Movement. We even wore shorts and had khaki uniforms then, when I was in the organisation. (I even had a homemade woggle made from a vertebra of a mammal: very non-PC).
It was a truly memorable time for me: school trips away & outward bound was in the future then.
Your visit to the West Somerset Railway, along with others that I have seen, find a rich vein of (full-colour) memories amongst my fading mental attributes… Keep them coming.

@@Pjs75 It was the late 60's when I was in the Scouts, we went canoeing on the local gravel pits, that was fun, most of the trips away from home were quite local, places like Goodwood. I can still remember the words to the silly songs we used to sing, things like "You'll never go to heaven in a jumbo jet, you'll never go to heaven in a jumbo jet, cause the lord ain't built no runways yet". I did go on a canoeing holiday with my school to
Symonds Yat on the River Wye ... happy days, not a care in the world. One of my children joined the ATC for a while, but generally things like the Scouts and Guides were not part of their lives. I'm glad you enjoy the videos, from your comments I get the impression we've visited a lot of the same places. I've got a few more British videos to upload before Christmas, as for going over seas, everything I've booked over the last two years has been cancelled, usually due to increased Covid restrictions in the countries I was planning to visit. Take care and stay safe. Tim.

Tim, indeed stay safe. Times they are a-changing. The hiatus of freedom, when travel and time were available has received a knock-back. I am sure that your relatives in NZ, like mine in Aus, would like all of this COVID nonsense to be over. Your videos have been an inspiration and the destinations a goal throughout ‘waves’ 1, 2, 3 & likely many more. Peter

In 1961 I had also attended (via steam powered ‘BR’ that involved us travelling up the Merthyr Railway, through the then highest railway tunnel in the UK, ) the Welsh Jamboree, held at Three Cocks, Gwernyfed, Brecknockshire. (Breconshire) a parkland setting which was reached by travelling up to Torpantau Tunnel then down to Talybont and Talythynn Junction, then on to Talgarth and Three Cocks Junction for a march to the site of the Jamboree.
Accompanying us were a group of American Scouts, who were the sons of US airforce personnel then stationed near Metz, in France. Before De Gaulle finally kicked the US out of his backyard. (So much for being helped to win the WWII?)
It was a truly memorable year.
I went back to paddle the Wye, a few years later, with a Somerset CC Youth Service group, from Glasbury to Chepstow, camping each night near the riverbank.
Incidentally, I still remember the choking smoke pouring through the carriage windows, once we left Torpantau station, where the coal trains stopped to lock down their brakes for the descent to Talybont and beyond. The line was a Beeching casualty- like the S&D and so many others.
Indeed Times they are A-Changing… they have already!!

Hello Bob, I spent 9 wonderful days in the West Country visiting both heritage and main line locations, I have one more "Driver's Eye" video to upload along with a video featuring trains along the famous Dawlish Seawall in Devon. In the last few days I've been gliding and I visited a local model railway exhibition, I've got enough to keep me busy until Christmas. As for what happens next year, I'm not sure, I'm booked to go to Germany in January, but with the spread of Covid in Europe that trip may not go ahead, I'm awaiting confirmation. Apart from Santa specials over the Christmas period the UK heritage sector is quiet until the gala events in the Spring marking the start of next years operating season. I'm just hoping at least one of the European tours run by the Railway Touring Company goes ahead, as in your neck of the woods, Covid is making travel difficult. Cheers. Tim.
