You should do a swim series like you did for your 5K to keep you accountable. Do a time trial for like a half Ironman or something, do a build and then repeat to see if there’s improvements. It was great watching the 5K, I am sure doing a series similar to that for swimming will get you results

  • @MrChiptrix

I know Lionel wont read this, but i write it down anyway ;-)
When i were young i was a competetive swimmer...
Like many others have already said, "Swim more, get better" even more so then running.
Even when i swam 8 sessions a week, if i missed 3 days, i needed 1 day to get back in shape. The feel of the catch in the water and the swimmingeconomy is so dependent on the amount of time "head down"
It looks like you need more stability in the water, so work on your hip-mobilty and do DRILLS.
First of all you should swim wider then you are doing, aspecially in open water, when you cross your arms go more narrow you loose balance in the water, in a poolsprint it doesent really matter, you have such a high strokerate and power. And no waves ;-)
Too test this, try too swim with your fists CLOSED like a boxer. You should be able too swim realtivly controlled with a slower pace with fists closed. But you need too swim wider, and turn your hips more.
Swimming in a group is better like you said, for many reasons... One thing is you should learn too draft.. You can save so much energy from swimming at someones feet.
You dont suck at swimming, and you know this ;.) but if you expect epic results like you do with your run & bike, you simply need too put the time in. Not for 4 weeks or 4 months, swimming is your weakest link, so priorities it... Last weeks before a race you should focus primarly on SWIMMING, it is also very good for maintaining & improving fitness, and you wont beat your body up in the same way :)
Good luck Lionel! Great inspiration :)

As a competitive runner/triathlete/coach for fifty years this covers one of the biggest issues effecting competitive triathletes entering from other sports.and that is realization training is different in swimming than bike or run. It’s putting in the right work since sport is so technique based. Great job Lionel this is going to be an interesting journey!

As a rower and a former swimmer i feel like you have to think of it as levers. You have to catch the water grip it and then pull yourself past it - you have to let youre hand catch the water though and get engaged so you don’t rip the water.

I would love to work with Lionel on his stroke. It would be so awesome to be a part of his transformation to Ironman Champion. Personally I think most of these swimming coaches overprogram workouts for triathletes. If technique (and the RIGHT technique) work isn't a big enough part of the pool time...forget it. It's all about the "cues". Hit those marks and he'll have the "feel". If not, he'll just keep getting more and more complicated overanalytical information that will confuse his brain once the gun goes off. I really hope he gets it.

You can aways tell the college swimmers in races, faster and smoother in the water...takes a lot to learn how to swim as an adult. Luckily as a age grouper, the bike and run are the way to get to and stay on the Age Group podium. In the Pros you need all three. I saw Lionel in Daytona, he came all the way back from a rough swim to finish 4th. He had one of the best or maybe the best run/bike combinations on the day.

Lionel, if you get tired of all the freestyle drills and the pool environment, try this .... go to a warm ocean like Hawaii, get a modern performance shortboard (6’ x 18” x 2.125”) and paddle! If you use your freestyle swimming arm stroke you will naturally roll a little bit too, many top surfers like Slater etc don’t roll much when paddling but you will, knowing what it feels like when swimming in a pool, ocean, etc. If you use a board of the dimensions I suggest, your position (horizontally) on the water will be correct - you’ll even be able to kick because the board has little buoyancy, just remember to do one power kick per arm cycle (that is, kick downward on the same side that you are pulling on, with a softer kick on the “recovery” side. You will have to get a feel for where to position yourself on the board in the fore/aft sense. As for your head position, look slightly ahead and don’t hold your head up too high - this will create drag and slow you down. You can mimic your freestyle breathing if it helps your overall timing. Remember that this description is for paddling out to the waves or just paddling for endurance training when the ocean is flat. If you are trying to catch waves you’ll want to slide further forward on the board, but you’ll need to experiment because catching waves, popping up into your surfing stance and riding waves is tricky especially on a shortboard. You might just get hooked on surfing while you’re at it!

Your pull against the water has to be nearly stationary relative to the surrounding water.. if your hand is pulling through the water faster you are not feeling the water and you will not maximize speed and efficiency, or be as fast as you can be.. feeling the water means able to pull without your hands ripping through the water. Wear paddles and feel how that feels, replicate with your hands.

Sebastian and Jan dislike this video. Truth be told....You will probably always "suck" at swimming in relation to your peers. As you continue to improve, they will also improve and in theory you will then have gained no ground. I would work at sucking less and really dial in that bike/run even more than you already have. Look at what Jan runs in a 70.3! If you can't find a house...The HILANDS apartments on River Road offer some nice spacious units, with 2 Olympic pools and a weight room facility!
    Lionel you are the man!

If this guy was in another sport, with his attitude and personality, he would have a million subs easy

What I do for good feedback is use a swimmer headset while swimming with a coach following me with an underwater camera giving instant feedback and coaching AS I SWIM.
