You should do a swim series like you did for your 5K to keep you accountable. Do a time trial for like a half Ironman or something, do a build and then repeat to see if there’s improvements. It was great watching the 5K, I am sure doing a series similar to that for swimming will get you results

It’s putting in the right work since sport is so technique based. Great job Lionel this is going to be an interesting journey!
After about 4 years of on and off training and now consistent 3 months... I still can’t breath well while swimming. It’s so damn hard to learn as an adult! I have a total immersion coach which is an absolute game changer. I’m on this journey with you, LS! Thanks for sharing!

As a rower and a former swimmer i feel like you have to think of it as levers. You have to catch the water grip it and then pull yourself past it - you have to let youre hand catch the water though and get engaged so you don’t rip the water.
Thank you for another great video and specially for being so motivational for all of us that also prefer to stay in bed and don’t go to the pool. That’s the way, train hard your first segment and imagine yourself going out of the water in front from the beginning of the race!!
Love this series.. am in exactly the same position.. I would love to work with Lionel on his stroke. It would be so awesome to be a part of his transformation to Ironman Champion. Personally I think most of these swimming coaches overprogram workouts for triathletes. If technique (and the RIGHT technique) work isn't a big enough part of the pool time...forget it. It's all about the "cues". Hit those marks and he'll have the "feel". If not, he'll just keep getting more and more complicated overanalytical information that will confuse his brain once the gun goes off. I really hope he gets it.

Lionel, if you get tired of all the freestyle drills and the pool environment, try this .... go to a warm ocean like Hawaii, get a modern performance shortboard (6’ x 18” x 2.125”) and paddle! If you use your freestyle swimming arm stroke you will naturally roll a little bit too, many top surfers like Slater etc don’t roll much when paddling but you will, knowing what it feels like when swimming in a pool, ocean, etc. If you use a board of the dimensions I suggest, your position (horizontally) on the water will be correct - you’ll even be able to kick because the board has little buoyancy, just remember to do one power kick per arm cycle (that is, kick downward on the same side that you are pulling on, with a softer kick on the “recovery” side. You will have to get a feel for where to position yourself on the board in the fore/aft sense. As for your head position, look slightly ahead and don’t hold your head up too high - this will create drag and slow you down. You can mimic your freestyle breathing if it helps your overall timing. Remember that this description is for paddling out to the waves or just paddling for endurance training when the ocean is flat. If you are trying to catch waves you’ll want to slide further forward on the board, but you’ll need to experiment because catching waves, popping up into your surfing stance and riding waves is tricky especially on a shortboard. You might just get hooked on surfing while you’re at it!
Your pull against the water has to be nearly stationary relative to the surrounding water.. if your hand is pulling through the water faster you are not feeling the water and you will not maximize speed and efficiency, or be as fast as you can be.. feeling the water means able to pull without your hands ripping through the water. Wear paddles and feel how that feels, replicate with your hands.
