Something to note: when I modeled the mask of Sensory Aptitude, I never actually intended for the eyes to have a stud connection. That was something that seemed to be accidentally discovered. I didn't realize that until the Kualus MOC surfaced. -KhingK
I realy like him having metal Blue as Armor. I found the metalic Krana Kal so fascinating, and the Idea of a rare Metal Standin for the other colores. But I have to say, the Blue is a little prominent, that makes it a little hard seeing his OG Element imideatly.
This is my second favorite winner (after Bomonga). The KK sword works great as an ice spear, with the star-shaped crossgaurd evoking a snowflake. The four protrusions also match the mask perfectly. The combination of the goggles and scarf also gives him a great aviator-style appearance (my headcanon for the scarf is that he flies on rahi-back often, and the scarf is to help with the high-speed winds). The color is also striking, though I'll admit, I preferred the entrant that made him gunmetal (another unique color scheme for a toa of ice) while giving Pouks the blue armor. That piece was my favorite entry.
@Tesla-Effect I actually quite like the way the mask's "mouth" looks, but was well aware that others didn't like that part of the mask so much... I threw the scarf on him on a whim to further differentiate mine from Kodiak's Kualus, and fell in love with the muffler+goggles combo. Originally it would have been dark red as a nod to Matoro and for a nice bit of contrast, but I totally forgot to recolour it :)
Were the printed parts made with PLA, and if so, would you mind dropping the details for the manufacturers of the plastic? I just like the color in general and wouldn't mind having a close match to it.
This is great, this is what Toa Hagah Kualus looks like if he got an official set of him along with the other three Toa Hagah. I can't wait to see the rest of the Toa Hagah team ^-^
You could 3D print a Nuva Torso piece that has instead a pin rod rather than an axle rod, that's the greatest thing about nowadays technology. THOUGH i must mention that there's a way to place that piece using a legal technique, it requires that black piece on the back of Vican which makes his wings higher than the regular Shadow Matoran set. You need that, 2 black pin rods with axle hole connections that come with Toa Metru Matau and Vakama to store their weapons further back and one black vertical axle hole horizontal pin hole piece that comes with Glatorian Legend Vastus between his torso and the life counter as a filler for the gap. My only issue with the Nuva Torso piece is that it can't fully go down into the Metru upper Torso due to it's corners touching first the chest sides, creating an unnoticeable strain of pieces if forced all the way down.
The filament looks great for the character though you might want to recalibrate your printer for a smoother quality print. Looking close up i noticed a lot of layer lines and a bit of stringing. I'm planning on printing out some custom Bionicle pieces myself so I'm learning myself.
I love the arm friction technique because it makes Metru builds more poseable and looks EXACTLY like the original sets. As for Kualus himself, I really like this model. His appearance fits someone that tames and rides on flying Rahi. The scarf makes him look like a WW1-WW2-era pilot and the eyes of the mask make sense as flight googles.
Not sure if you know this or if it was even intentional, but the winning art entry has the Toa Hagah's armor colors match the colors of the Toa Mata/Bohrok canister tops.
Personally I think the use of a mask of Sensory Aptitude is my favorite part of this rendition of Kualus, as I'm honestly quite fond of the design of that Kanohi, though I know it's not the most popular of mask designs. Also dark green eyes for an ice character just feels right to me for some reason.
Good set but if I actually had the pieces to make them I would take elements from a year/team to go with the idea that they’re supposed to tribute to previous toa I would make it a toa mata/nuva tribute with a mask of X ray vision because the 2001 ice Toa What’s the first one I ever played with but I love the armor pieces I just wish they gave more information on the other three masks
@Tesla-Effect truth, but that is the bulky one. Even though, it would been used big gear if it was intented to be "more loyal" to the original sets. Salut
Does anyone know what the exact color for the blue armor is? The closest I’ve found on bricklink is pearl sand blue rather than the metallic blue everyone seems to be taking about. I’m not sure what to use. And I don’t want to waste my money.
Construction of this canonised moc fit perfectly into a team, but 3D printed parts are big con, I understand if you need to buy 3d printed mask it’s fine, but not frikin full armor pack, it’s hard to match this colour + that many parts WILL COST BIG AMOUNT OF MONEY!
Wait, what's the red piece in his chest? I'm not sure what "ball joint" you mean. The only Technic "ball joints" I know of is the standard Bionicle and before ball connectors (and it doesn't look like one of those).
now, i think i will go for pouks only because the only problem for me i think is 3d printing the mask, while before the art work i was going for bomonga or gaaki, now, i will not because i need to spray paint pieces which will be probably a bigger problem for me rather than 3d printing a mask. also, now thinking about the spear tips, each one (or at least some of them) represent some kinda time, like gaakis represents the barraki when they were released, and pouks represents the hero factory line when it was still going, kualus for me represents knights kingdom considering the spear tip piece is from knights kingdom. anyway good review, hope to see more of the hagah characters. :)
Hello DuckBricks, great review! I am trying to complete my collection of toa hagah. I have 2 issues that I hope you can help me with: 1. Metallic blue paint. I have an Elegoo Mars 3 printer, and as far as I know there are no metallic blue resins. Do you know of any paint that matches LEGO's "metal blue" color? 2. Hagah shields. I would like to print hagah shields, since I loath the thought of desecrating actual LEGO hagah shields with paint. How can I contact King Sidorak to get his hagah shield file?
Tuyet is the next contest, Nidhiki will be getting one in the future, and there is a *possibility* of a Naho contest, but TTV has said that they will absolutely not be doing contests for the seven unnamed Toa Mangai.
@@thejerminator877 I had figured that only Tuyet and Toa Nidhiki would be the focus for the next contests. I'm very curious as to how they would be canonically. We have some idea on how nidhiki would be (especially since his mask is the same on that would be worn by nuparu in 2007 so that saves us all the trouble) but we don't know what the official limb arrangement is meant to be, how is air scythe is meant to look, and how tall his torso is meant to look. I've been trying to work out a nidhiki myself and he's almost done surprisingly. The only things I need are a dark green metru torso, another black gear to go on the back of said torso with a white 5.5 axle to go with it, a gahlak kal shield to go in the center of the torso, a neon green metru brain/eye stock, nuparu's mask of stealth, and two black axle 12 pieces.
I love the scarf, it really makes him stand out, although the mask of sensory aptitude has never been my favorite.. really looks like a minion. But that come looks awesome!
I really like both the scarf and the color scheme. The scarf helps beautify his mask which, doesn’t look too good on its own. So the scarf is a definite upgrade to me! Hope you do Pouks or Bomonga next.
Ah... The destroyer of white metru torsos. That friction solution is a major illegal connection hence why he is the above. The nuva armor is also illegal but not to the same extent. On the armor a axel may be bent but for the torso you have 2 axles that will be bent, a crushed bushing and a cracked torso with time. And lets be honest Pouks is really the only good hagah moc as its the only one that doesn't force mods and illegal techniques on you.
Hi! The builder here. The friction mod is entirely optional, and it's completely internal, so the outwards appearance of the model isn't affected in any way by its inclusion/exclusion. I understand why you may be concerned about the integrity of your parts, but there's no way the axles could possibly bend like you claim as the force is being exerted down the length of the axles used to connect the shoulders, and the center axle for the actuator is held evenly in place from 3 (more or less) equally distanced points along the circumference of the ball joint. The torso piece is also never going to break from the stress of this construction. If it were any tighter, the 1L axle bushings would crack and break, in which case there'd no longer be that kind of force exerted on the walls of the metru gearbox. I think you're greatly underestimating how resilient and reinforced the metru torso part is. I've had 1 of these exact mods assembled in a Toa Tuyet moc of mine for pushing 2 years now, and have used the mod in all 6 of my Hagah (dismantled and assembled again a few times each because I was particularly anal about their designs), a Lhikan, 5 modified Toa Metru, a Toa Dume moc, and a random torso I've just had sitting around. Ive cracked 2 bushings in all that time/out of all those mods, and both occured during assembly when I was intentionally forcing the pieces in place in the wrong order to test whether or not the order really mattered. That may be anecdotal evidence to you as I'm sure you've already made your mind up about it, but as far as I'm concerned, so long as you assemble it safely, your parts will be fine for at least 2 years. Absolute worst case: you have to replace a bushing.
@@TheiBunny hello, thank you for your explanation but I reserve my right to be concerned about the build. Having used only genuine Bionicle parts so far for building your model as intended, I stumbled upon the resistance of the bushing when attaching the waist and I can't say the connection felt good. It was very appearant it wanted to push out the waist piece. Not trying to disput your claim but for a person who have found Metru torsos who has cracked in the bottom axle hole(Especially white ones, a few green ones) for far less I'm not exactly in the wrong to be concerned. I could consider forfeiting my point about the Nuva armor but it doesn't feel much better imho.
@@ThatTarkur I've come across silimar isses with the hordika torso before with its axle connection points, and have seen metru torsos with a similar break to what you're describing, and from my experience, and understanding, that comes from rotational stress. As the waist piece is anchored with horizontal axles at the top and bottom most axle holes in the torso, through pin holes that do not catch the axles at all - the exact same way it is done in all metru builds - it is incredibly unlikely you'll be able to get the amount of rotational force required out of this combination of parts for that kind of break. It requires *very* little effort at all to align the waist properly after placing the bushing in to cup the ball from underneath, and any and all force exerted from the ball, outwards, is equally spread between the 2 bushings and the gear. Yes, it is a stressed connection, thats where the friction comes from, but as far as the hips are concerned - they're fine. It's being pushed downwards, with that force evenly distributed across the 2 perpendicular axles. Again, I've had this particular gearbox mod assembly together in a build for 2 years now, without any issue. If something eventually breaks, I'll let you know how much the replacement bushing cost. :)
Yeah now that I think of it, the scarf really DOESN’T make any sense. Only around the muscles it would make sense. There probably are some around the neck though, hmmm…

Huh, that's interesting
He looks really good alongside Norik and Iruini! Can't wait to see the rest of the team :)
And it begins! The Toa Hagah’s brand new official designs! Been hyped for these reviews!

I just built Kualus! I'm so glad the metal blue color is the one that won
That cloak is the most amazing thing ever. I wish we saw more cloth on bionicle characters, even though I know that isn't logistically feasible.
After Norik and Iruni, Kualus is my favorite Toa Hagah. Glad to see the official build lives up to the finalized artwork

I originally wanted to have 3 silver 3 flat dark gold Hagah but seeing them now with all 6 different metal colors, they do look nice.
@Tesla-Effect it is that same color. Haha.
I always wished that they made all the Toa Hagah officially, though I get why they didn't, can't wait to see what the rest look like!
Yeah the metru build does look good and makes sense. Glad they decided to go with that.

I'm impressed that the metallic parts could just be 3d printed out of that color, definitely makes me want to get a Kualas of my own more

Whoa toa kualus looked pretty meh in the artwork too me but the in real life it looks amazing
If you want it to be authentic you have to do what Subpar did and throw it against a wall
Someone make Kualus for me and I will pay them!!!
every time i see Kualus i can't help but see Ralsei, i think it's the scarf that does it...
and the circle eyes
I'm curious, for the next canonization contest will we get a contest for the toa mangai (sans Lhikan since he has an official design and set)?

So, Iruni's kualsi isn't actually kualsi in shape?
No, it is. Iruini is the only one with an accurate mask shape because he's honoring a previous kualsi wearer ;)
