Always chuckle at the 'pull the gum out of my mouth' part when you analyse the finish @4:40
Lol I honestly have no idea why i started doing that. Literally never do it outside of shooting. 😂
Solid review! I saw this bottle last night and decided to wait and see what others have to say about it. I was worries this one might be leaning more on marketing than value. Glad I watched this and save my wallet the $80. Subbed and always supportive of fellow Whiskey Tubers. Cheers 🥃
Thanks man! Subbed right back! 🥃
Hi Geoff, I have never bought any compass box, and I don't plan doing so any time soon after this review, hehehe. I really liked to see that you mention some better ones that you would choose before the compass box, it gave me a better idea the one you are reviewing , because I had tried some of the ones you mentioned ,great review as always. cheers my friend , I am glad seeing your channel growing fast
Thanks Green! You've been a friendly and supportive voice in the comments for a long time now. It's appreciated! 🙏
I really loved it the smell was amazing, but the taste is average. overall i think it is a good whisky, is there are better? of course but its smell is amazing and balanced
Sounds like an expensive Naked Grouse (about half the price). Would be curious to try them side by side - not because either of them are great, but as a test of value.
I think this is better than Monkey Shoulder, but it's almost double the price here, so it loses a lot on value.
I thought this bottle will be a sherry bomb but thanks for the review atleast i am informed now.
Lots of sherry in here. Bomb? Nah. Cheers!
Good call on this whisky. This runs about $75 where I live. The Spice Tree is $65. Easy choice to go with Spice Tree for me. Even better value for money is the Orchard House at $50. Cheers.
Sadly I can't get my hands on the Orchard House. I've been looking for it for ages, I've heard a lot of good things about it!
Compass Box Oak Cross is wonderful stuff!!!!!
Great review. An engaging watch. Cheers.
Thanks Al. I'm a fan! Cheers! 🥃
Douglas Laing do put out some of their single malt bottlings at sub-46%, for example the Single Minded series.
Good to know!
Haven't tried Spanish tree, but I liked Spaniard. As you said it's nothing special, but it's good dram. Price is too high thought, as i can buy glenfarclas 12 years 1l bottle cheaper than this one.
Please, for the love of Pete, make the clear distinction at every opportunity between Blended Scotch and Blended Malt.
The online Scotch Whisky Community needs to better communicate the differences between the two.
Blended Malt, in theory and very often in practice, is a SUPERIOR category to both Blended Scotch (obviously) AND SIngle Malt, because it gives the blender the flexibility to design a whisky using malts from multiple distilleries; something a single distillery cannot do.
As for Compass Box, I agree about this Spaniard, and about Spice Tree being better. Ironically, having just ranted about Blended Malt, may I suggest reviewing both of Compass Box's budget Blended Scotches, The Artist Blend and The Glasgow Blend. Both are about $30, 43%, and just about the only Blended Scotches I ever buy these days ✌️
Anyone who knows anything knows that all Compass Box Whiskies with a few rare exceptions are blended malts/malt blends. Sure there's always going to be new people entering our world and they're welcome, but I think the community has done a pretty darn good job of growing with the category and I think the distinction is pretty darn clear at this point. You also missed a great pun opportunity with your "for the love of peat!" there. Oh well..
@@tjross1313 Thanks, but I obviously disagree.
If they're fairly priced I might try them out. I'm working on Peat Monster at the moment, and I've still got the last of this bottle on the go. I'm much more into the Douglas Laing stuff than I am CB these days. That being said, I'll keep an eye out for them. Cheers.
@@Gwhisky I agree about Douglas Laing; their lineup is much more appealing to me. For a few years, Compass Box was getting a little crazy with their prices, but with something like Orchid House, they've gone back to basics. It's a very good (Summertime) whisky.
As for Peat Monster, it's a good complex peated malt whisky, but you will be disappointed if you're expecting an Islay-style "Peat Monster", because it really isn't that.
The Artist and Glasgow blends are really good; I know you'll like them.
What a coincidence.. had this last evening! Completely agree with your review. In Mumbai, Spice Tree is cheaper and way better in terms of palate and consistent quality.
Great minds think alike!
The not very good but highly loved on UA-cam Monkey Shoulder turned me off from blends…
Agree. Monkey Shoulder is good enough, but not exactly exciting or interesting. Generic whiskies aren't of much interest to me these days...
This is a real disappointment and I will not buy it.
To tell the truth, my first two scotch whiskies were Spice Tree and Hedonism...The Spice Tree is a favorite...
Hedonism is 43%. as is the now discontinued Oak Cross..
I agree, I can get other sherry whiskies for cheaper with an age statement...
I have bought 3 Spice Trees and since I am fan of Clynelish 14, Spice Tree pre 2021 works for me..I noticed that Spice Tree 2021 is Tomatin and others and Clynelish is no longer in it.
I think going with Laing's Scallywag is a better idea...in blended malts with a sherry influence..
sans vin rouge...of course...
I think Compass Box was perfect entry level company for me...Peat Monster is a great peat to begin with...Spice Tree is great...If I could find Orchard I would buy a bottle out of loyalty.
But, no more 43% for me unless it is Billy Walker GD12s or Lagavulin 16...
So, it is a pass for me and your review hammers that in stone for me.
Cheers
To be honest the brand on the whole is just ok for me. Plenty of 43% expressions, and their entry-level stuff hasn't blown me away. Spice Tree is a nice one, but the other expressions I've tried have been pretty middle-of-the-road. Certainly more to explore from the brand though. I've only just scratched the surface. Andy from Malt Box loves the Orchard expression. Not available here yet, but I'm definitely curious about it.
@@Gwhisky I agree...Spice Tree is $57us here...But, in Phnom Penh I found a bunch of classics that everyone has that I have never even seen.
I think I am going to hop in a mini bus and make the 6 hour trek...buy the whiskies and catch a ride back ...
He may have some GD 12s too...He had 1 -18 a few weeks ago...but, I can get a 21 here for the same price.
Cheers!
