    Thanks, my Jeep started making that horrific sound last night. Had no idea what it was. For those of you who want to hear the sound, to make sure it's the same problem as yours, you can hear it beginning at about 6:30 in this video.

      Taylor Welsh you should have someone do the shifting to produce your noise while you look under you Jeep for where the movement is occurring. Please do not crawl under the vehicle, be safe, observe at a safe position. My video shows the whole axle moving up and down during the shifting. Also there is a second drive shaft from tranny to transfer case. It could be trouble with bad u-joint.

    Hello, I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I've been hearing a grinding noise (when moving), and a popping noise (when turning). Both problems seem to be coming from the rear drivers side. The whole brake system has been taken apart, replaced, and/or rebuilt. The whole rear end has essentially been taken apart and checked over, but I'm no closer to a solution. I was told the problem could be the transmission, or the transfer case. I'm writing this in hope that someone can give me a more precise diagnosis, because I am at my wits end!!! HELP!!!! 🤔😑🤬

    • @samowens44
      @samowens44  5 років тому

      Hello Ryder White, this is a difficult problem to diagnose. You have to go through and eliminate all the things that are not causing the problem. First thing, the drive shaft can cause this type of problem. If it is you will get a vibration in the steering wheel at between 55 and 65. You many get someone to raise the jeep off all 4 wheels and run through the gears with wheels spinning, see if the trouble can be duplicated. This is dangerous and should be performed by a person familiar with raising a vehicle and performing this test safely. The front CV Joints can cause this clicking sound, but sound would be coming from the front of Jeep. On the above test with the Jeep off the ground, by hand rotate the wheels and listen for sounds. Get some others to help with with and all folks listen for where the sound is coming from. I feel this is your best chance of finding the trouble. Let me know what you find. Good Luck, I know how frustrating this can be for you.

      Yes, Your drive shaft u joint could be binding and the front axle isolation bushing may be missing. Look at my video carefully and see if you can check these items on your Jeep. It is hard to say for sure, Put a camera under the car pointing at the front area I show in the video. Look for some movement that is wrong. You could lay the camera down on ground pointing up, test view and move camera for best view. Then do your reverse test. May have to move camera to get all views to discover what is moving wrong. Put a light under also if too dark. Good luck.

      Chris Moorhead not sure, replace rear front axle bushing and possible front drive shaft. Talk to a mechanic, see what he will charge to do both after it has been determined that this you problem. If bushing is missing, that is fir sure. The drive shaft can be checked for slight to a lot of movement at the u joint. Twist back and forth while watching closely. Better to remove and check better. Good luck. If the u joint has play, you will also notice a vibration between 50 and 60 mph. You will feel it in the steering wheel if bad.

      @samowens44  6 років тому +3

      The wood is 2X6 and I use this for my oil changes and everything. It is so quick to lay the wood down, drive upon. Put it in Park and put a wheel choke behind the rear tire and front of rear tire. I feel the vehicle can not roll or move and I am safe, I have been doing this for quite a long time and it is the best for me. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

    would this bushing cause to have a loud humming noise when accelerating about 50 to 60 miles per hour?

    • @samowens44
      @samowens44  4 роки тому +2

      There are two problems that happen with the Jeep. The bushing deteriorates and falls out causing a clunking noise. This leads to the front drive shaft u-joint wearing out causing vibrations and binding that helps create the thumping noise at low speeds while turning. If you the Front Drive Shaft U-joint is bad it will also cause vibrations in the steering wheel at 50 mph and above to 65 mph. This could be the buzz you hear. Hope that will help.

    Any one has link or name for that bushing? is it replaceable??? any help would be nice, my jeep has small vibration when acceleration from 0 kinda goes away when letting off throttle.. i just checked under the jeep and it looks like the busing is there but definitely big gaps between it and where it should be attached, on top of that the jeep sometimes jerks into drive from parking to D.

    • @samowens44
      @samowens44  4 роки тому

      Tony, It is call the front axle support bushing. There are three. One on each side and the rear. The rear is mostly the problem. They would require more skill than an average person would posess to replace. Plus, it would really need to be on a lift. Now, if you have a vibration, that is most likely the Front Drive Shaft u-joint is bad. Usually, they go bad together, the u-join and the bushing. so be ready to make sure that the drive shaft u-joint is checked. I am sorry, but this should be taken to a repair place to properly and safely be done. I say all this, as I had both the u-joint and the busing bad. Mine was covered by an extended warranty.

    1) at what mileage did this start?
    2) I just started getting a clunk/thump when making wide (across 2 lanes) left turns under power. It's not happening with right turns, or slow left turns from a stop, but when I get a run at left turn on a 4 lane road. Is this the start of the problem?

    • @samowens44
      @samowens44  6 років тому

      Forbes, Hutton If the noise sounds like it is near the front drivers side, you could have this condition. A easy way to check is to do like I did at the end of the video, Place the Jeep in Park and drive back and forth. If you hear the clunk you are most likely missing the front drive axle bushing mounts. They are rubber and when they fall out due to wear, you have metal to metal and movement.

    • @samowens44
      @samowens44  2 роки тому +2

      @@phreaksangel3584 I think you may have another problem, the CV joints may be your problem. The bushings that are bad make a clunking sound like something hitting the bottom of the Jeep. You can look at the CV Boots and see if they are torn. You will need to move the pleats of the rubber CV to see if there are torn places. Water and dirt can enter and destroy the CVs. The Boots are the pleated rubber covers that go toward the inside of the two front wheels. a good way to look at them is turn the wheel sharp to the left and you can look at the driver side. Move the car up a little at a time and look for torn places. Do this for the passenger side. Turn hard right. If the boots are torn, that could be you problem or will be a problem shortly. .

      Faycal Rouf yes,but you should show this video to your mechanic. There are two key failures, the front drive shaft universal join and the rear mounting grommet. After viewing the video and inspecting the parts, it should be clear. Good luck.

      Faycal Rouf, the Drive Shaft will cost over $1000, but you may be able to get someone to rlace just the u-joint and will be less. Front Axle should not be too bad to replace the Rear Mounting Rubber bushing. Have them look at the other two Mounts at left and right mounts.

    What is the part called??

      Brandon, it is the front Axle support bushings. There are three. The rear one is the one that wears out. Google Jeep grand cherokee front axle support bushings and you will see what they look like. Don't forget, the drive shaft can be part of the problem, so the universal needs to be checked. The axle bushing are not easy to replace unless you have the tools rquired to get the old parts out and press in the new ones. Research before attempting.

    Stupid Chrysler junk. You would never see this happen to a good Japanese vehicle.
