Brilliant demo. Mate, I'm old enough to be your grandad and have seen and owned so much gear in my time (still waking the neighbours) and your demo is superb. You demonstrate the sounds of each amp and sound type with sensible, appropriate licks with the minimum of fuss. Excellent stuff, charismatic and clear.
Finally (and somewhat unexpectedly) someone tried some palm muting with the High Gain settings. I like versatility but Metal is my main style and knowing if there is some punch when doing a palm muted chug style rhythm is important. That would be my only real complaint about VOX amp reviews (in general) is they tend to always use the same sort of guitar and that hurts VOX's chances of expanding their user base. Yes it's still a Fender but at least there is a humbucker in it.
I koo oh j koo Jon on I on io koo is that you love him yup I know he’s he’s the only person that Hugh okois UK yyto dto to yyto yyto you x to XX your dad hei
I have an AC30HW2, which is the hand wired production AC30. I've had Marhalls, Mesa Boogies, a Rivera and assorted Fenders (still have a Champ for practice and recording). The AC30 will probably be the last "big" amp I'll own. It's very dynamic like the C2 you're demoing. Who needs channel switching??
As a VT owner I can say that AV sounds killer. Great for practice sessions, recordings an just about everything. Amazing sound, affordable, and maintenance free amp. And yes, it's all analog. Thank you VOX.
nice comparisons. I was shopping for a Vox and had a go on the VT and then an AC15 - no comparison! The tone and presence of the AC15 was amazing in comparison to the AC15 'tone' on the VT. I gig with the AC15 which is fine for most things but needs a fair bit of tweaking during a gig and I had to buy an AB switch to be able to channel switch. I've since tried the AV60 and am very tempted - it sounds good, is light and has a range of amp models which would make gigging easier. Also, the AC15 needs the valves changing which, while easy, costs money. I would also love an FX loop (which I think the AC60 has).
Vox fanboy here... I have an AC15C1 and I LOVE IT. It's an incredible piece of "kit" as they say over there. I also have the VT20X and it's a winner as well. On the VT20X I hooked a speaker jack to the speaker wires and I use it to run a Marshall MG4X12 and it sounds awesome. (It was necessary to drill a small hole in the back - sealed cab - to run the cable to the 4x12. If you can afford an AC, GET IT. If not, the VT series is more than worth the money.
So I've been on my amp hunting journey for a while now (so many videos lol) and yours have helped make a decision think the vt40 is the one for me loadsa fun to be had credit to yous probably my favourites here on UA-cam 😉
I love my VT100. Only problem, it weighed an absolute ton, so I took my time and neatly chopped it to create a separate amp head and cabinet. I dumped the metal grill and replaced it with some VOX diamond ox-blood speaker fabric and made a black, wooden plinth on wheels with four recesses for the cabinet feet to stop it slipping off. The plinth has a small door, so I can use it to store the VOX foot switch pedal when I'm not using it. I'm extremely pleased with the results. Much easier to carry around and sounds amazing. I won't ever be parting with it.
should i buy an av30 or a vt40x. I need it to be as more versatile as possible, but i don’t need so much distortion cause i don’t like genres like metal. it would be play with a telecaster or a strato. thanks
1. AC (obv, but not affordable for most) 2. AV (amazing amazing, best hybrid analog amp... except get the AV60 if you wanna take it out and gig with the drummer , the AV30 and AV15 are more of home practice amps) 3. VT (it's a digital modeling amp... one of the better ones but still, you will need the 100W version only, if you wanna sound good with a drummer)
This is an awesome video. Will you consider making a video about the AC30VR? Quite interested in that amp but would like to see a proper review. How much headroom it has on the clean channel so I can stick some pedals in front without it getting crunchy. How loud it is.. all that. Info you would wanna know if you went gigging with the beautiful looking thing. Also you totally made me follow this channel with this video.
Great vid! I bought the av30, love the vr but its too damn big. Funny, thats how I play purple rain too, so much easier to do the stretch on the d chord, rock on.
Just an aside here.. In 2004 (maybe 2005) I bought a VOX Valvetronix ADVT-120. When I got it home and plugged in my PRS Custom 24, I started messing around with the huge number of settings. I read and reread the manual… bottom line, I’m sure it’s a beast of an amp.. but I get a headache every time I use it (and this is 19 years later). I’ve got 2 amps I use now.. a Laney IRT-SLS and a Boss Nextone Special….both are much easier on my mind…
I use an AV30 with my rock band. Way loud enough for practising with the group. For gigs, I turn it only 1/3 up (10:30h) and mic it up to have a better balance in the room on the PA. But I'm sure it would be loud enough on it's own if necessary.
@@AlexK-iq2ej Hi, I ended up buying the Vt40X It's a great little amp, light as a feather and very loud. I took it to a jam recently, and only had it up about half way to sound good with the un-mic'd drums, so you could gig small pubs with it. It's also very flexible. With the tone room app, you can get pretty much any sound you want. so pretty happy with my decision, The VT40x does everything I wanted it for.
I am torn right now between the VR and the AV. I am hoping my local store gets an AV in so I can try it. Shame you did not have the AV30 on this video but if you cant keep them in stock they must be good!
Question, for those of you who own any of these. How close do you think any of the VR series are to the proper AC series. Also, how loud is the AV15? Could you gig with it, at a push?
Don't know if you ever hot an answer for this... but I had the AC30VR for many years. Gigged it loads, it can be enough to be heard, but not enough to be 'impactful' in a band. Most of my time with it it was mic'd up. I cant imagine the 15w will do it either. I have an AC15C1 and gig that now. AC30VR vs AC15C1 side by side comparison with an AB switch, I got the 30vr up to maxed out at home... I got the AC15 up to about just after quarter and had to turn down, way too loud for home. In band practice the AC15 is up at about half way on the master and is holding up against the drummer, gig time and it's nearly 3 quarters, but I could use the preamp volume a bit more too...

Hey man, great video and nice playing! (First of all, sorry for my bad english) I think i'm going to buy the vt100x because my band's drummer hits very hard haha and i need it for small/medium gigs to... but i'm going crazy... Can this Vt100x hybrid amp give me a similar volume/power than a 30/50w full tube amp? Thanks
In the good old 60’s i owned a ac30 twin in beige as in background of vid.Original twin 12 inch JMI ( Jennings musical industries.?) far superior to 12 inch Celestion blues .Superb sound ,all 6 valves interchangeable in all channels .Cost £.115.00.new.Had a Black ac30 twin and not nearly as good.Later changed to Fender Precission in Fiesta Red number F000137 bought from Gough and Davy in Hull and paid 199.00 Guineas .Where are you now?
I still have the same question. In my non-informed opinion of some that doesnt own any of those two, I would go with the VT40/100 for the versatility and endless sound combinations
Hey man, I'm really interested into buying the VOX VT40X. How do you like it? Does it sound that good? And most importand:how loud is it? Like, can it hold a concert in a bar or when I'm practicing with my band?
Great Amp! depends how loud your drummer is and what genre your playing? There is a VT100X if you need more volume - www.pmtonline.co.uk/vox-valvetronix-vt100x-modellng-amp
In my opinion, the AC60 (as well as the AV30) are two amps that not only have more nice than bad sounds, they also come close to what i would answer if anyone would ask me to design my perfect amp for home, rehearsal, and small gigs: I would like the amp to be light, compact, and well build, versatile in sound but intuitive to operate (for those `rare` occasions where the light is bad and the band inpatient ;)), at least 2 (but preferably 3) channels, have reverb (always on with me :)) , an effect loop (i cant understand that it was left out of the design off AC30vr), and a boost function. Surprisingly, it has been very difficult to find a (affordable ;)) amp that comes close these requirements (suggestions welcome :)), but apart from the boost function, the AV30 and AV60 fullfill all these requirements. I see the fully analog design and, the modulation and delay effects as nice extras. The fact that the effect return t you can use the tube poweramp characteristics eith the effect return is actually pretty amazing, and makes it also a very nice power amp for any digital modelling preamp. I do prefer my knobs on the front and not on the top, as i like my amp to be slightly tilted, and i do think the AV30 and AV60 are unfortunetely pretty ugly to look at ;). (If it was me, i would design every VOX amp with their iconic traditional look). I have been looking at the possibility to 'rehouse' an AV30 in a Pathfinder 15 enclosure (i know, it is also a nice amp, but it has much less versatility)
Wait, did he say that the AC30 comes with a footswitch that allows you to switch between the normal and top boost channels? Is that true? Most AC30s I've seen come with a foot switch that turns on the reverb and tremolo.
I bought a VT20x a couple years ago. It had an annoying background rumble/hiss during note/chord decay on the clean channels. Has that been fixed? I really wanted to like that amp but the clean channels were completely unusable due to the background noise.
Thanks for the great comparison, was the last confirmation I needed to buy a AV15 for home practicing. BTW: what is the name of the song you started at 14:40 ?
great video but got just one question if I want to get U2 sound should I get this VOX AV or VOX NIGHT TRAIN COMBO... since I cannot afford VOX AC30... I'll appreciate someone reply me ..t-you =)
Hi, I saw the demo and I'm undecided between av60 and vt40x or vt100x, from the demos the impression is that it sounds warmer than vt40x or vt100x, ignoring the much wider effects in the vtx models as sound is better ? is it more similar to a pure valve than vtx? Thank you.
Hey man, what a nice video, and great playing as well, you are truly gifted !! Could you tell me how long the 12ax7 will last on the VTX series ? And what do you think is better between the Vox VTX and the Marshall Code for playing metal ? Thank you so much.
I just returned my code 50 after a day fiidling with that piece of s***. Traded for the av30, no convoluted menus, tedious editing and great tone! The code had the worst, worst headphone out I ever heard, useless and,if you turned off cab sim while playing thru the speaker you would hear the crappiest 12" speaker of all time, junk.
WHEN IT COMES TO VALVES PRE AMP VALVES LAST ALOT LONGER, THEY BASICALLY HAVE 2 PRE AMP VALVES BUT 1 IS USED IN THE POWER AMP, THIS IS VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT -> ALWAYS LET THE VALVES WARM UP FOR ABOUT 3 OR 4 MINUTES TO BE SAFE, IF YOU PLAY RIGHT AFTER TURNING ANY VALVE AMP ON YOU WILL BURN THEM OUT VERY FAST SO ALWAYS LET THEM WARM UP, I DO 5 MINUTES TO BE SAFE
I have a situation, I need an amp suitable for bedroom environments, I need it to sound as good as possible, but I also really like my pedalboard that I've put too much money into to just get rid of, AC15VR or AV15?
Hey man, I'm really interested into buying the VOX VT40X. How do you like it? Does it sound that good? And most importand:how loud is it? Like, can it hold a concert in a bar or when I'm practicing with my band?
Hey bro, i’m a fan of vox amps and i love ac tones but unofortunately i can’t afford an ac30 or 15 so i’m thinking on an ac30vr but is it good for bedroom playing and gigs? And also can i play hard rock like ac/dc with it?
i am so damn struggling.. dont know if i should go for the VT40X or the AV30... i think the AV sounds more natural where the VT is maybe a littlebit synthetic/artificial.. or am I wrong. What do you think?
u r' right I got VOX VT40n' it sounds artificial/digital..just bought the AV30 ' sounds more natural ..runs very well with pedals n' has FX LOOP ... good lucky bye
I'm not enough into Vox to get an AC, and I don't feel like the VT keeps up with the Fender Mustang II series which I already have, but I am really considering an AV60 they sound amazing and versatile and great price
If you were cordially invited to play You Will Never Walk Alone at Anfield on a Sunday afternoon match against the Red Devils, which of those three would you use? Imagine yourself standing in the mid circle n the Kop is pulsing, electricity crackling in the atmosphere n the players n fans have their fisted arms on their hearts. What's your amp gonna be? You know it's a slow song with lots of room for tasty fillers in between those chords n made for a Purple Rain like grand finale of a Free Bird solo at the end 🎶😎
Upon further review of this video (AKA watching it all the way through) you definitely are Irish. Not sure what part but.... Colin frickin Farrell lookalike!
Bassy, muffled, sometimes muddy, without much definition. The opposite of bright, trebly, sparkly, spanky tones which are (at least in my opinion) the Vox signature tone, though then can sound dark. For an example, humbuckers are usually way darker than single coils. Usually darker tones have a less pronounced attack, overly bright tones can sound shrill and ice picky.
but, I think I heard him say digital effects. :) I wanted to clarify coz this amp is on my list. edit: I have listened to him carefully and I just got it, he mentioned the digital effects immediately after 8 analog voice.
The new Vox AC30 has an effects loop built in so I don't understand why Vox didn't do this for the AC30VR and AC15C2 as well. Inserting effects between the guitar and the amp input isn't going to get the best outcome. The normal order is: 1. filters (wah, envelope, dynamic) 2. compressors 3. distortion/overdrive [effect loop send] 4. modulation (tremolo, chorus, phaser, flanger) 5. volume 6. delay/reverb [effect loop return] Without an effects loop (parallel or series) the amp's own gain/boost (crunch/distortion/overdrive/OD1/OD2) channel has to be avoided so that modulation effects stay bright and delay/reverb effects stay clean. A Vox VT100X has all this built in, but it's a cheapo amp and will never impress a discerning musician.
1. AC undoubtedly. Regarding more affordable amps, I like VT series more. AV sounds more fizzy in distortion area. Clean sound is on par with VT. VR is also very good. IMHO: 1 AC, 2 VR, 3 VT, 4 AV.
AC sounds:1:47
VR sounds: 4:16
AV sounds: 8:12
VT sounds: 14:40
Thanks for all the sounds, Russel Off-Brand!

Good review, but you should've used an AV60, to keep the 12-inch speakers constant. The 8, 10, and 12 on the AV series make a huge difference.
These demos are great because he's an average player it gives you a realistic image of the amps capabilities, great job mate xx

this is an amazing video 😍
Glad you enjoyed it! Make sure you subscribe for more great videos ua-cam.com/users/PMTVUK
What you think is better ? Vox Cambridge 50 or Vox VT40X ?
I still have the same question. In my non-informed opinion of some that doesnt own any of those two, I would go with the VT40/100 for the versatility and endless sound combinations
On the tone room the Cambridge 50 only has 2 pedals and the vt40 has 3
Hey man, I'm really interested into buying the VOX VT40X.
AV15 sounds good and would be good for bedroom practice as it probably is not too loud.
It is loud, just not as loud as a decent drummer.
Great video!
Wait, did he say that the AC30 comes with a footswitch that allows you to switch between the normal and top boost channels? Is that true? Most AC30s I've seen come with a foot switch that turns on the reverb and tremolo.
You're right! the footswitch is for the reverb and trem option
I bought a VT20x a couple years ago. It had an annoying background rumble/hiss during note/chord decay on the clean channels. Has that been fixed? I really wanted to like that amp but the clean channels were completely unusable due to the background noise.
Or, should I go for the Cambridge 50?
VOX VT40X or CODE 50?Need help!
VOX is good at dist but CODE have many effects
Thanks for the great comparison, was the last confirmation I needed to buy a AV15 for home practicing.
BTW: what is the name of the song you started at 14:40 ?
john mayer waiting on the world to change
great video but got just one question if I want to get U2 sound should I get this VOX AV or VOX NIGHT TRAIN COMBO... since I cannot afford VOX AC30... I'll appreciate someone reply me ..t-you =)
I have a AD60VT, I would like to see your opinion on it!
I think the AV"s sound better than the VT's. But of course the all-tube AC's sound the best. 😉
Hi, I saw the demo and I'm undecided between av60 and vt40x or vt100x, from the demos the impression is that it sounds warmer than vt40x or vt100x, ignoring the much wider effects in the vtx models as sound is better ? is it more similar to a pure valve than vtx?
Thank you.
fantastic player!
Cheers Matthew
VT, by a hair, but definitely the VT! Still have mine btw ^^ It cannot be bought from me, go buy your own, pawn shops are everywhere :P
He is Robin from HIMYM as a man who plays guitar. No idea why, maybe because I just watched the episode where everyone was like Robin by Ted.
I have a situation, I need an amp suitable for bedroom environments, I need it to sound as good as possible, but I also really like my pedalboard that I've put too much money into to just get rid of, AC15VR or AV15?
AC15-C1 all the way! It's all valve and powered by a Greenback speaker!
which suonds better AC15C1 or AC10C1... I mean which one sounds warmer , cleaner , n more defined??.. I'll apreciate u reply me =)
elmero mero already make a choice?
VT40X or AV15?
Vt40x imo
I would go for the av30
vtx
VT40X if choosing between these. But AV30 is probably the best choice
Brit or MKII, my favourite setting :)
Ac30 or vt40x ? Please reply I need help!
What did you choose? I'm in the same situation
One question. In your opinion, for a clean sound. Which one do you prefer, which one is more tube sounding: he AV or the VT?
They both appear to be the same as for hybrid tube/ss amps with the exception of the VT having the digital effects area.
I have the v40x and its really nice
does the vox vt40x have some hiss issues ? and is it good for metal ?
Thank you so much
Hey man, I'm really interested into buying the VOX VT40X. How do you like it? Does it sound that good?
And most importand:how loud is it? Like, can it hold a concert in a bar or when I'm practicing with my band?
What does he mean about "the originals back in the day" not being all-valve?
Which is best Vox VT40+ or the Vox VT40X
vt40+ or av30?
Hey bro, i’m a fan of vox amps and i love ac tones but unofortunately i can’t afford an ac30 or 15 so i’m thinking on an ac30vr but is it good for bedroom playing and gigs? And also can i play hard rock like ac/dc with it?
From what I listen in here, yes
I havt the older ADVT20 and its a beast. You can find them used for $80
i am so damn struggling.. dont know if i should go for the VT40X or the AV30... i think the AV sounds more natural where the VT is maybe a littlebit synthetic/artificial.. or am I wrong. What do you think?
u r' right I got VOX VT40n' it sounds artificial/digital..just bought the AV30 ' sounds more natural ..runs very well with pedals n' has FX LOOP ... good lucky bye
elmero mero You like FX loop dont you lol
Triggerboy78 If you made a choice please reply and help me choose
Struggling with the same amps
I'm not enough into Vox to get an AC, and I don't feel like the VT keeps up with the Fender Mustang II series which I already have, but I am really considering an AV60 they sound amazing and versatile and great price
Strat+ac30 and no Rory Gallagher????
What would you recommend more for small pub gigs? The AC15VR or an AV60?
go for AV 30.. good for small pubs n' it u can plug into an external cab
AV60
the AV has tubes but whatever jiggery-pokery is happening isn't likely affected by them. I bet the AV's can even run without them.
What do you think, is the VT40X loud enough to jam with a hard hitting drummer?
Hi Peter, you might struggle with the 40. Have you checked out the VT100X? www.pmtonline.co.uk/vox-valvetronix-vt100x-modellng-amp
VOX av or Supro Blues King?
Shot in the cardiff store?
If you were cordially invited to play You Will Never Walk Alone at Anfield on a Sunday afternoon match against the Red Devils, which of those three would you use?
Imagine yourself standing in the mid circle n the Kop is pulsing, electricity crackling in the atmosphere n the players n fans have their fisted arms on their hearts.
What's your amp gonna be?
You know it's a slow song with lots of room for tasty fillers in between those chords n made for a Purple Rain like grand finale of a Free Bird solo at the end 🎶😎
A hairy British Colin Farrell showing us awesome amps!
Upon further review of this video (AKA watching it all the way through) you definitely are Irish. Not sure what part but....
Colin frickin Farrell lookalike!
Nice amp and some outstanding bad joke deliveries as well...
Tough call VT40 or AV 30...
go for AV30 ..sounds more natural...n' has FX LOOP ...=)
Av60 it's rocks my house man and the size of it is just great
t-you=)
AV60
Tattooedsailor ac10 or katana. If you are using a pedal board get yourself a used ac10, if not a katana. If you really want that vox tone a vt40
I need a amp for on my bedroom would you suggest av30 or 60 just to make my family angry? :p
haha... go for the 60!
haha thanks :D
Are you from Doooblin?!
Irish Potato no, he sounds like he's from northern england.
Definitely Ireland.
pfft....That 's not an Irish accent....he's from the north east of England.
You've never been to the NE of England, have you?!
You've never been to Ireland , have you?
AC-30 FTW
When talking amp tones, what does the word "darker" mean?
Bassy, muffled, sometimes muddy, without much definition. The opposite of bright, trebly, sparkly, spanky tones which are (at least in my opinion) the Vox signature tone, though then can sound dark. For an example, humbuckers are usually way darker than single coils. Usually darker tones have a less pronounced attack, overly bright tones can sound shrill and ice picky.
@@PoorTom
Thank you. Now I get it.
Is the av30 a 1x12? or 1x10?
I get the feeling he is trying to disguise a northern accent, it peeps through now and again!
Would an av60 be good for live gigs?
Definitely! That's a great amp for live gigs and studio work. Just make sure you mic them up! -Lee
av30, 8 analog voiced digital effects?
but, I think I heard him say digital effects. :) I wanted to clarify coz this amp is on my list.
edit: I have listened to him carefully and I just got it, he mentioned the digital effects immediately after 8 analog voice.
Whats the first riff that seems like a classic??
It is a snippet from Queen's "One vision", than guy play "Tie your mother down" it seems that he likes Queen
The new Vox AC30 has an effects loop built in so I don't understand why Vox didn't do this for the AC30VR and AC15C2 as well.
Inserting effects between the guitar and the amp input isn't going to get the best outcome.
The normal order is:
1. filters (wah, envelope, dynamic)
2. compressors
3. distortion/overdrive
[effect loop send]
4. modulation (tremolo, chorus, phaser, flanger)
5. volume
6. delay/reverb
[effect loop return]
Without an effects loop (parallel or series) the amp's own gain/boost (crunch/distortion/overdrive/OD1/OD2) channel has to be avoided so that modulation effects stay bright and delay/reverb effects stay clean.
A Vox VT100X has all this built in, but it's a cheapo amp and will never impress a discerning musician.
Does anyone knows what song is the one playing on 4:16?
It's definitely by Brian May, just not sure which Queen song it's from
@@Nick9n thanks bro i think its hammer to fall, i had to whatch bohemian rhapsody again to sort it out hahaha
1. AC undoubtedly. Regarding more affordable amps, I like VT series more. AV sounds more fizzy in distortion area. Clean sound is on par with VT. VR is also very good. IMHO: 1 AC, 2 VR, 3 VT, 4 AV.
