I'm not proud at how hard I laughed at the "not all blacks are equal" comment
The sudden rise in epic music along with 'make the emperor proud' had me lmao
Zumikito: "And don't try to paint your whole army like this, or it's gonna take forever."
Me, 2 years into painting 3k of Black Templars with Eshin Grey>Dawnstone>Admin Grey highlights: "Huh, yeah, that's good advice."
😂 I feel ya with 2k of white space marines
Any particular reason your both avoiding the more Traditional: Abaddon Black, Eshin Grey, Dawnstone Highlights?
@@ironreed2654 I use a slightly different version of what he uses, and the main reason for layering Eshin Grey is because is still allows for there to be some shadows and depth, while still reading as black when highlighted
@@wafflesthecat6661 so Dawnstones too "bright" for your taste? I've following the "citdedel charts" so far but this Knight Arminger is my first attempt at black stripes and panel lining
@@wafflesthecat6661 I did something similar on a squad of Death Company years ago, though I found Eshin Grey still a bit too light for my tastes. I ended up using a 1:2 mix of Eshin Grey with Abaddon Black, shaded with a 1:1 mix of Abaddon Black and Nuln Oil (the wash on its own didn't show that well.) After highlighting and other details, they still look really close to black, though still with notable shading. Now they have Corvus Black available, I'm finding that works quite well to get the same effect.
Great simple tutorial, short and easy to follow.
and that's... what we always wanted, finally!
Really appreciate your videos. Short and straight to the point with no unnecessary filler.
Thank you :)
@@Zumikito Yes I love it, straight to the point within 2 seconds! Really appreciate and love this!
This is just what I was looking for! I was trying to figure out what edges do and what edges not to highlight on my chaos warriors and how to build up the highlights.
What a great video. Thanks for taking the time to share!
These newer super compact videos are awesome. Thank you so much for sharing. Please be safe!
Thank you! More will come
This is absolutely killer. You slammed it perfectly and all in less than 5 minutes, Jesus!
Thanks, simple easy directions. Appreciate the paint names.
Great video thanks, quick and to the point. 👌❤️
Thank you so much for the video! Love the black armor.
You are more than welcome!
It's Cool but there is a simple other way:
1: Black Primer
2: Mechanicum Standart Grey
(Dry brush)
3: Fenris Grey
(Strong dry brush)
4: Nuln Oil over the entire Mini.
Do this until you have the darkness you want.
Done
(You can so this in this way for Vehicles too.)
Best Regards from Germany
Yes! So much faster and Looks more Natural then Edge Highlights!
Really nice explanation, thanks for the tips!!
You are welcome!
Crazy this doesn't have more views. Best black armour video on UA-cam! Thanks so much, my Raven Guard look amazing now!
That is such a nice comment, thank you! With time, it will get more views definitely
Another awesome!!! Tutorial 👌
This is a very helpful video. thank you giant beard man!
recently found you channel on the suggestions, really well done you are a talented teacher and a talented artist. very glad to be here
Thank you for your kind words, it keeps me going!
I love your content your videos are super helpful !
Oh you, I am going to blush! Thank you
I enjoy your videos, thanks
I've come back to this video about 7 or eight times now. It's going to stand the test of time
Love your tutorials so joined your channel.
woop woop! welcome aboard
Thanks for the guide! As much as I love colourful and distinct armies, to my great annoyance, all of my favourite subfactions are primarily black: Black Templars, Black Legion, Order of Our Martyred Lady and Craftworld Ulthwé, so this definitely come in handy. At least it mixes well with other colours.
I appreciate that you kept the title sensible. Too many videos max out on clickbait.
Video itself was great too.
Awesome video man! Super helpful
Thank you!
This was really helpful for my army
absolutely great, thank you very much
Thanks for the tutorial man
Great video.
Useful and great, thanks
That out of context joke made me crack up. Great vid 🙂
Glad you liked it!
I guess casual racialism is par for the course in 2022
@@ObjectiveMedia Get a grip you muppet
Intreasting. I can’t get the hang of ‘volume’ on black so I’m glad I can just edge highlight. And yes it is torture doing multiple marine army’s like this. For some reason I decided to do Ravenwing, Black Legion and Black Armoured Space Wolves. 😢 🤯
Very helpfull man, thanks!
Finally. I have stopped painting my black templars because they looked so stale. Now this gives me a something I can work with, thank you.
Same here with iron hands XD
My god this is basically the gw video word by word. The only thing that was missing is the wash/glaze at the end. Great work!
Thank you for the advice for the gray highlight. I don't care for the black to bluish transition, but black to gray/white is my jam.
Thanks! This was simple and easy to understand.... even for me😥
I seem to keep returning to this tutorial. Awesome stuff! One quick question: Is there any chance you could do a tutorial for that sweet saturated desert base? Thanks a lot for your work!
Nice and clear, thanks :D
Glad to help!
Dang, its really nice to have a video like this. Its not too simple, but also is not too long and treats me like the semi-competent mini painter I am.
Thanks
Thanks for the tips. I am going to paint Chaos Lord on Karkadrak so painting black armour will be a "must do" for me :)
Great stuff mate
Thank you!
Great tutorial. I'm going to try those green steps
You are gonna paint incubi? :)
"Don't try to paint your whole army like this."
You can't stop me, fool
This is almost exactly the same formula I've come up with for painting black armour. Awesome!
I still think the eavy metal style for space marines is the best way. Also it's definitely more than just edge highlights. Looks great
Definitely using this on my Inferno Squad
Just found your channel-subbed!

Now i have an idea for my deathwatcht ty
Great tutorial, +1 subscriber.
Thank you for your support :)
Hey ! Awesome video ! Could you do a full video (tutorial) on how to paint black templars ? like you did for your sons of the phoenix.
Zumikito, can we hang out and paint black armour together? lol. great video as always dude!
I'd recommend dry brushing models models with these colours if you plan on painting lots of models, it won't look as good but you'll get the desired effect minus the headaches.
Watched this video 3 times already.. Think I'm gonna have to steal this recipe for my Deathwatch! 😎
Go for it! :)
Great video! I could do that! Looks like it would work for stormcast eternal as well!
This is new new favorite channel. Anyone have a recommendation on brushes for edge highlighting?
"if you don't start with black spray wtf are you doing?" escaping of the pain that is painting white?
Very nice video! I've been using mostly same colors except dark reaper instead of incubi :p
I imagine it will have very similar outcome since that darkest layer is there for less harsh transition. Thank you
My girl saw this video and now she wants to do this for her Sister's army. But with blue robes. I think its going to look great
Awesome video! Could you please tell me the specific brush u used in this video? The thinnest one ^_^ on ur description it just shows me the entite range of da vinci and newton. Ty!
Can you make a video on how you painted the shield? It looks amazing!!!
I need to know what you did for the pearl look on the shields they look amazing =D
Quite easy, celestra grey, just slight touch of agrax and after that I just marked little curves here and there with ulthuan grey and fenrisian grey
Nice tutorial, i actually asked for this in a video before 👍🏼
what do you Think about drybrushing the large armor plates exposed to Light with corax black in combination with a Highlighting as in the video?
Would These 2 fit together on the Same Model?
You can try it, but drybrush can cause rough surface or "scratches" which would not really work with precise neat highlights, but if you make it look damaged, who knows? You could try glazing over the exposed part or airbrushing it instead
Please tell me how you did the chest emblem! Gained a sub!
I’m not missing it this time!
An absolute madlad, love it!
"Don't try to paint your whole army like this, or it's gonna take forever"
You underestimate my power. I want nothing but the best result for my army, being it my biggest, most expensive model, to the common foot trooper. Takes time, but the result is so much more enjoying.
I like the spirit, go for it! Don't get burned out though
But you gotta do the whole army like this and go insane. Right of passage for chaos black legion to arrive to the table looking insane from edge highlighting and blocking in all the gold trim.
Very cool, i kinda wanted to see you paint the shield 😢
nmn on edges XD very clever
''and also you should not paint your whole army like this, or it will take for ever'' Ye... I know... but it look good...
Having painted over 2000 points of Ultramarines, Black Legion, World Eaters, Death Guard, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, and Raven Guard, using the 'Eavy Metal edge highlight method, I can say that it certainly makes the models pop on the tabletop. The huge downside is that it takes a loooooong time. I've heard practice, practice, practice blah, blah, blah, but there is no getting around it, if you rush the highlights, they'll look terrible. I'm sure many just want to get some models on the tabletop, but it's hard for me to take the time to make my characters look nice and then leave my 30 troops looking bland and boring. Embrace the suck hobby community, you'll be proud of yourself.
👏
I'd really like to see that sisters video you reference, is it not up any more? I can't find it.
I just start, so it's pretty great thanks :)
What do you use to have a white like this on black ? I try to use Corax white with white scar, but the result is not great :(
General advice is to rather go for grey, so I used either Ulthuan grey or silver grey from vallejo, it looks still almost white :)
@@Zumikito I'll try that, thanks.
I really would like to add or improve on the video.... except: there is nothing left to ask. Excellently done! Thank you!
Maybe some other question.... is there a vid on doing Harlequins?!
You are too kind! There is no vid on Harlequins unfortunately and I am not if there will be as that is too specific and I want to provide value to as many people as possible
@@Zumikito thank you. About Harlequins... yeah... rather a fringe taste :-) But thank you for your answer.
And about being kind: I am not. Just truthful :-)
Dude you are the best! Helped me with my whole army but i was wondering how would you speed paint still a a high standard Black Templar army?
Thank you! I would simply skip some of the highlight colors
@@Zumikito thanks dude I ment for the white?
@@wilfiepritchard9480 for a white army? spray them with light grey, oil wash and highlight pure white - something similar has been done in my recent video where I paint 2k pts of space marines
@@Zumikito hey I ment the white shoulder pads?
@@wilfiepritchard9480 oh haha, that is simply ulthuan grey and highlight of white scar around the edges while keeping it dark in the recess
"or you can just gradually add white"
GW WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION.
❤
can i ask you wich brush you use for highlighting ? i struggle finding a good brush that fits well to me ! insane tutorial btw
sure, those are da vinci maestro series 35 brushes
@@Zumikito funny, those ae the one i use right now :o but wich size you use the most ? size 0 or 1 ? i'm still hesitating :D thx for fast answer
@@yetresa but they are amazing! Size 1 and 00 :)
I would just paint the armour a very dark grey or some other very dark color and then put some black shade over it; a lot faster and works better IMO since "black" does not really exist.
How are you avoiding your touch ups being textured or thick? I've been starting on the panel lining recently and having trouble getting smooth coverage on small area's, I use a wet pallet.
I just apply thin layers, in case of white it takes even more. You could also try going a little but thicker but spreading it more
I like your videos. Can I use this for fallout waste land warfare power armour?
Just found your channel amd immediately subscribed. Inspired to paint my first space marines black but I already had a few blue, and they all are primed white :( hope multiple thin washes of black could fix it?
Thank you! If it's not too thick, I would prime black over (or airbrush black) that and make sure that it is thin. Alternative is to learn how to strip your miniatures - you can dip them in Isopropylalcohol (IPA) and do it with a toothbrush. Chances are, that down the line you will end up stripping something (I do this as well quite often). Washes by themselves will not be enough I am afraid
@@Zumikito oh I didn't even know that was an option. Will the alcohol damage the miniatures at all?
@@christopheranthony4657 plastic ones definitely not - those will be fine, wouldn't risk it with resin though! You can look up online experience of other people
@@Zumikito will do thamk you so much, im new to this hobby and dropped a pretty penny on the indomitus box and got so worried of permanent paints cover. Thanks again man you saved my God damn bacon!
@@christopheranthony4657 cheers!
Hey great video and might be a stupid question but i'm really new to highlighting, is the first layer supposed to be a bit thicker than the others? Because i saw you use more the tip of your brush rather than the side.
Hi! That is not stupid question at all, first edge highlight is always a bit thicker and I progress to make them thinner and thinner.
@@Zumikito thank you so much!
@@imperialinquisitormordecai9688 no problem my friend
If I’m not painting the whole army like this, what’s the time saving technique for say troops?
I want to edge highlight with red, should i start with Khorne red or other ones?
Do you use the wet palette while edge highlighting? I’m struggling to get a balance between the highlights being watery on the wet palette, and the paint drying out on the end of the brush in a dot when I don’t use it.
The trick is to not water down your paint too much, otherwise you lose control over it. I do use wet palette, but don't add as much water
what is the sister of battle video you mentioned, please? I can't find it. This is what I want to do with my BT's.
👍🏻
What brushes should I use?
Could you do this with black and red? I've never painted a mini before, and I just picked up my very first Warhammer 40k minis to build and paint.
Yes, but your initial highlights have to be quite dark red. Starting from simething like khorne red could work better
Huh. Neat.
Personally I’ve always found the Eavy Metal style blacks to go too bright on the highlights but this was a great demonstration of how to do it
For my Deathwatch I prefer a darker matt black effect so it looks like the armour has been designed to absorb light rather than reflect it so I do a soft drybrush of Eshin Grey all over which gives a subtle transition of shade and then finish off with an Eshin Grey/Dawnstone mix for the highlights to pick out the sharpest edges/corners
That paint brush you have looks so sharp you could use it as a weapon. What brush is that ? Was looking at your supplies you use and it says Winsor Newton. It just looks much longer and Sharper then that. Id like to know, PS I love this video your black looks amazing. I dare you to paint ANYTHING in musou black. Try not to get sucked into whatever you paint as it is rumored to have warp energy in it ! Its that dark !
I may sound incredibly stupid for asking this, but if I am not supposed to paint my whole army like this, then how am I supposed to paint it?
I would like to stick to the eavy metal style throughout my whole army so what am I supposed to do for infantry or these types of units?
Not sure if this has been asked, but how did you paint the shield? I've been looking for a marble type effect to use on the same shield!
It's just taking celestra grey and adding some various curves with lighter and darker paints, that's it :)
@@Zumikito Celestra Grey, got it, I'll give it a go! Cheers for that mate!
How do you get the blue highlight so bright, mine looks so dark compared to those on YT. im following your guides with the same paints and yet the contrast isnt as bright as yours. do you do more than 2 layers of each highlight color? This is my biggest problem with edge highlighting and im not sure why its so hard to get the blue to stand out.
Thunderhawk blue? I have no idea, but maybe once you use fenrisian grey, it will get more obvious. Try one part till the end and I am sure you will get the same result.
