  • Ever wondered how to paint glow effect or object source lightning for your miniatures? Whether you are painting glowing plasma for warhammer miniatures or glowy magic effects for Marvel: Crisis Protocol miniature, I got you covered!
Glow effect or object source lightning is definitely something that many miniature painters struggle with and no wonder - there are so many mistakes that you can make! In this video, I am offering you blueprint tutorial that will explain to you under 5 minutes how to paint this glow effect easily without going too deep on the topic. Building such glow effect can take you from 30 minutes to multiple hours depending on how good you are and how big of the surface are you covering.
Note, that you might select slightly different approach when you are painting glow effect for plasma coils for warhammer as opposed to painting something like fire or magic effects - it all depends on the surface that you are going to cover. Either way, basic principles of painting OSL (object source lightning) that are covered in this video, should work the same.

I have some ideas that might help you with making more content:
    1. Varnishing in general (maybe explain if you gloss varnish to get a protective coat, then matte to get the matte look)
    2. Maybe showcase how gloss, satin, and Matte compare. I know others have done this, but I highly enjoy your quality and attention to detail.
    3. Varnishing without using an airbrush (my persona one I need help with) I'm afraid to varnish my models lol.

I'm curious, when you making this with mostly white minis, what if instead of adding glow over the finished white armor, add some color between the base white and the following layers? Theoretically after that you would only need to add some edge highlights.
Gonna try on my next minis. Either this will turn issue with white color having not the best coverage into advantage, or it just adds a lot more mistakes to fix.

    • @Zumikito
      @Zumikito  4 роки тому +1

you can try that, but try reflecting a lot of light on any white object a then try it on any dark object - the difference is huge as white does not really reflect all of it, but rather "absorbs it". With white objects, glow is definitely way more subtle. You could try using darker grey layer on the areas that you want to be glowy though

Main problem with OSL on lighter surfaces (like the white parts of the shoulder pad in this example) is that the OSL becomes darker than its surroundings which is just wrong.
To make it right, you would have to plan ahead and make the whole region darker and lighten up the OSL.
But that might also look like shit.
On darker surfaces this technique works just fine.

Zumikito Miniatures It was when he came out with his video on his painting he showed that mini. His first. :) I hope to do better for mine. Used to a lot of scale modeling. Now working on 40 spess muhrines. And since I'm an idiot I start easy with Legion of the Damned. :)

I often see people paint plasma coils with the brightest part of the coil being the lower edge, they have the raised edge as the dark part. This never makes sense to me, plasma is hot, it behaves like an incredibly hot gas when in a air tight chamber so it would rise and pool in the highest parts of the coils I would have thought....

if a white object were near a glowing object there would be no glow effect (or very little) unless the white object were in a dim or dark environment.

    • @Zumikito

That is a nice one, but it is more of a primary red from what I could tell, you want a little more yellow and white in it - for that vermillion is perfect
