Black Armour - Table Top Standard - & why is painting black tricky?

  • An efficient approach to painting black. I've painted armour, but the same technique would work nicely for other applications. During the video I also touch the subject on painting black in general. Black is tricky. When painting black there are a few things that I try to have in mind, and I wanted to share these thoughts with you.
    The "black" recipe:
    1 - Zenithal Prime
    2 - Black Templar contrast paint & Contrast Medium
    3 - GSW Black Soot liquid pigment
    4 - GSW White Dust liquid pigment

    Your videos have single handedly inspired me to paint again with similar passion. Your story telling is eloquent and straightforward while being visually digestible. Watching you learn new techniques shows viewers relatability and being content with their own painting style. Being able to tell my own story through painting has been the perspective I needed. Thank you so much for reigniting the fire I had to enjoy painting in the present and into the future.

    I’m gearing up to start painting minis again, Battletech this time, and I decided to do black as the main color for my vehicles.
    Contrast paints weren’t around the last time I painted, so this was very helpful. I was struggling to think about what order to work in as I’d never painted minis primarily black before. I appreciate how you were able to blend theory and practical application as you talked. Concise and informative. Great video!

    I appreciate this video so much. You explained in a much better way than I why black is a pain. Most edge highlighting I've seen from expert painters is very heavy. Have to outline literally every crevice and detail. And then, for black, no matter if it's a cloth or a matte metal or a shiney surface, they always edge with shades of blue. This has always, because of the heavy highlighting, done the thing you mentioned with the too much grey makes the black grey, turned the black into blue. And I think your video explains really well why that happens.

      Thanks 🙏 I’m getting more and more aware of the fact that this channel is about me / my thoughts and process and that there is not much “right or a wrong” to be taught. Talking about how I reflect on painting stuff seems to mirror a lot of other peoples. Just by talking about this and putting it in a video can maybe help people solve their own problems rather than try and copy my technique (I hope so anyway). There is of course tips and tricks - “right and wrong” - but I think my learned peers can teach that better. I’m mainly here to inspire. Rambling on here, but I’m glad my thoughts on black came through in this video :)

    I like doing true metallic black by basing with a dark iron color, then painting over that with the black contrast; then drybush a metallic highlight on it to bring back some of that shine. The contrast paint gives it the black color, but because it's not a perfect coverage, it still keeps some of the metal visible through it; kinda results in a slightly oily, faded metal look, which is perfect for the metal bits of big mechas and such.

    A thinking man's painter, I really enjoyed the ideas and carefully considered approach
    I liked the results a lot, especially the almost cast iron texture from the black pigment and will grab the white at the same time based on your recommendation. I do love drybrushed transitions when they're done well and not chalky, to pull that off with white on the brush is a real challenge and you succeeded admirably.
    I don't think I'd bother with the contrast black, I don't think much of that survived the later treatments and would likely go with a flat chromatic black at that stage. Like the zenithal lightmap, I think you used it well to show yourself the details and the volumes you were going to develop with the dry brush technique, but likewise not much survived to the end result.
    A really enjoyable vid and look forward to more, immediate no brainer to subscribe

    Dish washing detergent, I never used it to dilute paint.
    It is also usefull for terrain making. For example, it works perfect to glue ballast to tracks, in model raileroad landscape.
    Mix PVA glue with water, and add a couple off detergent drops to the mix.
    Now put the ballast or very little stone bits in the place of the terrain you are making.
    To finish, bath with dilutes PVA just from top of it, and let it dry. It will glue perfectly.
    Dish washing detergent will allow the glue go throw all the ballast and soak it completely. Otherwise, if you just dilute PVA glue with only water, it will form drops in the top off the ballast, sand or little rocks to be glued with a horrible result.

    Just a thought. But you could enhance the bright outline of the 'shiny' black armor by painting a tiny amount of gloss varnish in those locations. Just to add a bit of additional reflected light. If you don't like the look, you can undo it with a bit of matte varnish.

The regular ones just have so much more potential for individuality... and you won’t have to worry about gaps on every other shoulder pad...

    Interesting technique! I usually use a mixture of Citadel Leadbelcher with a bit of black, or Army Painter Gun Metal with a bit of black. Both about a 3 to 1 black ratio.

      Thanks! Yeah, love that white dust for dry brushing. Especially on a big makeup brush! Make sure to wipe of more than with normal paints though. Because it’s so fluid, it needs it.

    This was really interesting to watch. I wish I could see the models on the tabletop to get the full effect but I definitely want to to give this a try with some sisters of battle. I think it would be an amazing effect to mix it with the deep red cloaks they wear.

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 роки тому

      Thanks Jules. On the tabletop, my mini's from this video appear more "black" but with visible details. That being the point 😂 I get quite a few comments on the fact that these look "grey". But we all know what happens when stuff ends up on the table, everything looks darker... and I tried to take that into consideration when making the video.

    FINALLY! A painter with manicured nails!
    Dude I can't tell you how much, I'm put off by janky nails taking away from the subject material.
    Also your black recipe is awesome, I'm going to have to borrow it :D

      @@52Miniatures I’ll check out your patreon, because I’m struggling, I mean really struggling to achieve a good look for my Stardrake. I may be setting myself up for a fail trying to achieve what the paint looks like on the box. 🙁

    The fluid you put in dishwashers also acts as a flow improver and has the advantage of not bubbling as much as dish soap. It might even work in an airbrush, though I haven’t tried it yet.

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 роки тому

      The fluid that makes the glass look extra shiny? Not diswasher detergent right? That would kill the brush I recon.

    Man those minis look great. I'll definitely try your version of painting black next time I decide to make some black armor. I've been mulling around whether to buy some chaos knights. If I do, I'll be using this method to paint their black armor.

    Just came across you channel and the content is great! I’ve always struggled with painting black and I think will give me a lot of fun new ways to approach it. Seems like green stuff world has a lot of great product, wish it was easier to get in the US

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 роки тому

      Thanks R and welcome to the channel. Yes I've heard GSW can be tricky to get hold of in the US. Some of the stuff they put out, is just to make it easier for hobbyists, like materials that can be found in a lot of places... but.. saves the roundtrip. A lot of their products are unique too.

      Thanks! I did one fail, but most of it was planed in my head more than on minis :) It would most probably look real well with metallic armour as well. Just drybrush with a metallic instead :) Hope you are doing well and staying safe.

    • @somebodysomewhere5571
      @somebodysomewhere5571 3 роки тому

      Not too much navy however and then I go over recess points in nuln oil and if I get too much on the navy is fix it and sometimes if you have a tiny amount of grey dry brushed in it looks really nice
