    dude i love the casting on this show so much. Cleopatra was a bit unexpected -- i think i expected some vampy femme fatale slinking about with serpentine grace. granted, she does eventually appear that way during her entrance in the palace at Alexandria, but by then you realize that's a very deliberate decision on her part. this is the Cleopatra you meet first: quite young, down on her luck, drug addled, delicate and almost elfin in her appearance... but for all that, imperious and brave and unmistakably intelligent. considering her intelligence was probably the real Cleopatra's single most valuable asset, this was just such a memorable interpretation. i just wish they'd had the budget to give three triumvirate arc the time and space it deserved

      @@TheLightShines yep! and while this actress is clearly not ugly, i'd say she's maybe not the stunning unambiguously beautiful woman people seem to expect to see. i mean, just recently we got Gal Gadot cast as the legendary queen, and Gal is freakin gorge. instead this Cleopatra kinda actually has the prominent slightly hooked nose of the real Cleopatra and looks like she could be of Greek descent, possibly w/ Egyptian/North African mixed in.

      Lyndsey Marshal is a much MUCH better actress than Gal Gadot or more film type actresses. She does film and telly, but. like Ciaran Hinds, her work on stage is clearly where her interest lies. One of the main reasons Rome was so good was the cast - very good British and Irish actors with real skill...not just people who've had a bunch of plastic surgery and regard hours spent in the gym as learning how to act.

    One small issue with the show: As far as we know (and we are probably correct) smoking hadn't been discovered yet outside of the Americas. At least not in this form. No pipes, no joints, the closest people got was throwing some shit on a fire and inhaling the smoke. While we take it for granted, the discovery of burning a plant or crude drug and inhaling the vapors (you could call smoking intrapulmonary administration really) was HUGE. It is second only to IV administration in absorption. Back in these times people would either eat bits of dried opium like a pill, or drink a tincture of it, but they certainly didn't put it in a pipe and smoke it because we'd probably have some evidence of that through written accounts, sculptures, stelae, or artifacts (old pipes found at dig sites)
    It is a little surprising because we know the Scythians (steppe nomads in Eastern Europe) would throw piles of cannabis onto a fire in a tent then sit there and inhale it, so how no one made the very logical jump from that to concentrating the process by inhaling it through a tube is a little baffling to me, but there's no evidence that it was done by Europeans until contact with Native American civilizations

      @@blueberrygod8275 If even that. Maybe there were isolated exceptions (like the Scythians getting close without really understanding what they were doing) but it didn't become a well known thing for another thousand or so years. Actually, smoking opium might be the safer way to do it, especially if they made a tincture with alcohol (laudanum) which has additive effects and can easily kill yoy

      @@jakeg3733 Copper smoking pipes have been recovered from Egyptian burial sites dating back to the third millennium BC. The hookah was is use too, both in Egypt and the Indian sub-continent.

    • @jakeg3733
      @jakeg3733 Рік тому

      @@jarlborg1531 There is only very circumstantial evidence for that anywhere but in the Americas prior to the 1500s. For example, how do we know those are pipes? A smoking pipe is a pretty simple contraption which will look like any number of other things. There just isn't enough direct evidence. Now, things were burned and inhaled yes, but it was more like incense. The way people would concentrate it was by putting themselves in a confined space while burning whatever drug it was they were trying to use. That is not smoking though, certainly not as it's portrayed here. I'm not going to say it was _never_ done, it's a relatively intuitive idea that was probably discovered independently several times but never became widespread until the age of sail
      Opiates being what they are, had people been smoking that crap in ancient times I'm confident there would be all kinds of textual accounts of it being done. Addiction is not new. Human brain chemistry hasn't changed at all in the past 10,000 years and smoking is right up there with IV use when it comes to packing a punch. Opium would have been very, very popular and there would have been a lot of addicts as we see in later times. Not to mention 99% of folks being screwed from start to finish, giving ample reason to engage in escapism via drug use

    Vorenus and PUllo with their Flashman like knack for turning up at so many key historical spots.
    Which reminds me....if HBO and others want an historical series with the potential to run and run, with great locations, incredible plots, lashing of sex, outlandish costumes, fighting scenes big and small...
    ...why oh why is no one doing all the Flashman novels? They're even very very funny.
    I was sick as can be during the first 4 months of pregnancy. All I could do was sit in a crouch with a bucket in front of me and feel green. But I laughed my way through it by starting with the first Flashman and then just kept going.

He ran out of tent and ordered Pullo to immediately report to queen and do as he's ordered. Cleopatra as the daughter of Ptolemy XII of Macedonian origins was most likely red haired or blond, and therefore didn’t look like a waitress from a kebab restaurant … and even more obviously was not black. Ridiculous.
