    Aaah, Malak. I remember him well. The first time I fought him, I too didn't have an optimized build, so he killed me again and again and again.
    Eventually I figured out that you could kill the captured Jedi, which helped, but he still killed me again and again.
    In the end, I had to resort to something I am not proud of : I pumped my Jedi full of all the stimms I had picked up over the course of the entire game but never used, and killed Darth Malak through the power of drugs.
    It was not my proudest moment.

What i found funny (i had the first, unpatched PC version) is that Malak would use force lightning on me a couple times at his earliest convenience. So you would see the protagonist literally jittering and tremble while injecting ample amounts of chemical cocktails into his blood stream. Truly a sight to behold.

    Jane: " if I die"
    Jane does indeed have a second stage. It's a bit unexpected as the party who defeats her gains experience, cash and Jane drops rare loot
    After that though she jumps to her feet, lightning strikes her and Jane's second form now looks like three gods duct taped together and her banger of a soundtrack kicks in. This is really frustrating though since there is no checkpoint and she runs around draining health from OutsideXbox staff

      the mod that lets you have torrent anywhere does have you die in the void if you’re on torrent in radagon’s fight when it transitions to Elden beast, and the devs just couldn’t find a way to have torrent disabled for one and enabled for the other

  • @MidlifeCrisisJoe
    @MidlifeCrisisJoe Рік тому +48

    It seems pretty obvious that the Elden Beast fight was going to be on the back of your steed at some point in development (same thing with the mystic deer too) but for whatever reason they couldn't get it to work or not at acceptable frame rates or something and then didn't tune it for being on foot. Because if you could ride Torrent throughout that fight, the biggest issue with it - the trudge from point A to B when the beast teleports away from you to launch magic at you - disappears rather quickly.

    • @MamaTrixxieAsmr
      @MamaTrixxieAsmr 7 місяців тому +6

      Not being able to ride torrent for Elden beast is probably(this is my theory, take it with a grain of salt) cause you just fall into the void if you’re on torrent when transitioning from radagon to Elden beast with the mod that lets you have torrent anywhere and they couldn’t find a way to disable torrent for one but have it enabled for the other, cause like
      That happens exactly nowhere else.

      That segment reminded me of trying to fight Ornstein and Smough. Kiting them around the pillars in their boss arena while screaming is how some players separate them. (One is much faster and will dash ahead of the other to come hit you, then you have a moment to whale on him before his friend catches up and mallets you to a fine paste). I did mostly stop screaming after a while, though, once I'd backed around that hall so many times in a row that mild hypnosis set in.

    I remember going "seriously?" when a Marauder somehow tanked a BFG shot. They were just so determined that you fight them in this ONE way, with no exceptions or thinking outside the box. What was even worse, however, was when the final DLC boss was not only modelled after them, but had something like four phases and if you miss the "attack now" cues, he'll hit you and get half his health back. Such a missed opportunity.

      Dunno why players got so huffed up about the Marauder having a prescriptive way to kill it. It's happened dozens of times in other games, even Doom itself, and players have had nary a complaint.
      You can still also cheese Marauders with the BFG since they'll prioritise blocking the projectile's tendrils over anything else, allowing you to whale on them with impunity

All of those things work well in Sekiro where the player character is faster, and can use every attack as an opportunity (because of the parry system), but in Elden Ring you just have nothing to gain by putting yourself in those combos, so you end up spending every fight waiting for the boss to stop so you can get a hit in and it prevents you from taking a lead or proactive role in the fights. Oof, yeah, any boss fight where you have to do something notably out of the ordinary too progress can be hugely hit or miss. On the one hand, mixing up the formula so that the entire game isn't all the same is great and can give boss fights a little extra flair to really separate them from standard combat, but on the other hand if it's not clear that the pattern's been altered, you get those frustrations of "trial and error" trying to figure out what you're supposed to do, because it's also a fine line between using a glaring neon sign that people tend to dislike and so unintuitive that you get a large portion of the player base that doesn't understand what it is they're actually supposed to be doing.

    The most annoying boss I've ever faced was Demyx from Kingdom Hearts 2. When we first encounter him in the underworld where we don't really fight him, because all we have to do is get rid of his water clones with in a time limit, but later on we encounter him in Hollow Bastion where he comes back with his little sitar. HOWEVER this time not only do you have to fight him but he has a timer whenever he summons his water clones in greater numbers and if you miss one the entire fight restarts. You can't stop him from summoning his clones and if you are in a drive form if I remember correctly because you wanted to beat him faster you can't even destroy his clones for whatever reason.
    And I repeat if you miss a single one and the timer reaches zero it doesn't matter if he has practically no health left you restart the fight. He will make you almost break your controller whenever you hear the line "dance water, dance". And if you want to 100 percent let's say the ps3 version of kh2 you have to defeat all members of organization XIII as data battles including the blond little shit

      You can absolutely destroy all of the water clones while using drive forms, the issue is that kids tend to button mash and lock themselves into animations that waste time. What the game actually wants you to do is hit a clone once or twice to make it change shape, then use the reaction command that let's you spin it over your head and destroy groups of them. Me at 11 or 12 didn't get it, and spent an entire night into daylight trying to beat him before I finally noticed. I kicked myself for not realizing, and he's been easy ever since.

    Ok so I guess I’m on the “Marauder kicks ass” side of the Doom fanbase. Here’s my rebuttal to his point. He says Doom at its best is like a ballet. Everything fits and gels together and you’re dancing around the room, slaughtering everything in your path. Then the Marauder shows up. Think of it this way… You’re still dancing around, but now you’re just dancing with a partner. Once you learn how to dance with the Marauder, he becomes so fucking easy.

    Ellen is extremely valid in her criticism of FF7 remake battle system. It’s very fast paced and the learning curve with every boss is almost soul crushing. You have to lose and try again over and over until it finally works. I played on normal. I can’t imagine how hard it is on HARD mode.

      True. I started on normal, but after beating Hell House, using up all my phoenix downs in the process thanks to the last stage, I went with easy mode from there.
      I have tried getting through hard mode manage it up to Hell House, but gave up after reaching its last stage as it almost one shottet both Cloud and Aerith, not to mention it's kind of random whether I can reach that point, since it spits out Tonberries which are notorious for one shotting.
      Worst part is that the game is made hard in a very cheap way, the AI is clearly prioritizing whichever character the player controls, making the Cloud solo sections the most entertaining, that cheap boss tricks like and blocking item use just drains the enjoyment out of it. It's like the goal is to be strong and good enough that you can accidentally win the boss fights, at least some of them are like that

    In Final Fantasy VI there was a boss at the top of this tower where you could only use magic. And the last thing it did before dying was cast Ultima which did 9999 damage and killed your party.
    The "Standard" way of doing it was to cast Life 3 on yourself, which auto-rezzed you if you died.
    My cousin got there without knowing the spell.
    I thought he was doomed.
    His solution? Rasp, Rasp, Osmose, Cure 3. And he atlet a book on the confirmation button with a turbo controller and went and got some Chicken Nuggets. Comes back like 30 minutes later and the boss dies but doesn't have enough MP to cast Ultima.

    Most shocking thing for me here is learning that Young Jane played Light Side in KOTOR. I suppose that was before she properly discovered evil and her true calling.
    I do remember having similar issues with the Malak fight, and recall employing a similar 'run away and toss grenades at him' strategy. On subsequent playthroughs I discovered the joys of Force Storm and Death Field (and to a lesser and light sided extent, Destroy Droid), which killed those jedi healing flasks in a hurry. Of course, my favorite way of playing KOTOR was to ignore the glowing pool noodles and build as a gunslinger. Nothing beats stunning enemies and shooting them with blasters, like a hero.

      I'd heard of this fight before, not sure where, I've never played it, but the guy I heard it from's take was... yes this seems like a bad thing.. but it actually makes perfect sense. Malak kinda telegraphs that you can kill them/break the pods or something in his dialog. If you're totally deep into the RP side of it you'd probably brush it off as just the boss being evil with his banter. But from a gameplay PoV he's telling you how to even the odds.

      I went light side and my strategy, which served me really well through the whole game was basically a combo of force stun, then doing a sneak attack flurry with dual lightsabers. Through 90% of the game I was able to mince basically everything in my way. Then came Malak, where my force powers worked so rarely on him that it was pretty much not worth trying to cast them. I basically ended up beating him by just alternating flurry and med pack, flurry and med pack, flurry and med pack until he eventually fell down.

    I totally agree about the Marauder from Doom. That fight works as a boss because it forces you into a carefully timed duel that requires your full attention rather than moving from one enemy to another as fast as possible. But as soon as you put it among other enemies you can no longer keep your attention on it for fear of dying to everything else which makes it much more difficult than it should be because every time you die your frustration with it increases because it doesn't feel fair like the boss fight did.

Then you get to the end of the game and you are suddenly isolated from your party and forced to handle the scary boss battle(s) solo, and if you haven’t optimised yourself for combat then you are going to have a bad time.
