- Ping G430 MAX Driver Forgiveness Test where we look at the NEW offering from Ping in the G430 Driver Range. The MAX is the most forgiving of the 3 models releasing, and has been the market leader for Forgiveness ratings for as long as I can remember. Now Ping are experimenting with coming away from its winning design by chasing a little more club head speed. Does this or shall I say will this change in design cost them the Most Forgiving Driver in Golf crown?? Lets find out.

What a fantastic review. Loved it, so much information to take away. Definitely one to try in 2023
The faster you swing the more the head drops and flattens out.
Definitely the best club reviews on UA-cam. No one goes into this detail with ball and club data, especially with mishits.
Definitely lower background music in this one compared to your SFT review.
Love the better sound of the G430, like I commented on your SFT review, next year I’ll be comparing my 2016 M2 to G430 max or LST to TSR2 and Callaway Paradym
My 16 yr old son just took his B Day money with some he had saved up and picked up a PING G430 Max with a PING Tour 2.0 Chrome stuff shaft. So far he absolutely loves it. He’s only played 2 rounds with it so far but it has drastically helped him off the tee. He’s a little trouble hitting a fade. Moving the weight to the Draw position it has driving the ball consistently straight! I had done a ton of research and felt confident this would be the best driver currently offered for him.
Great reviews. Love the fact that you do comparison to lower speeds, since a lot of golfers will be at those speeds.
Great channel, you are excellent at what you do.
Very kind of you 👍
Really appreciate you testing this at the 90mph slower swing speed. Most golf reviews are meaningless to me without testing at speeds more typical of high handicappers, well done mate!
Hi Dave, glad you enjoyed the video and got something from it 👍
I don’t think anyone out there does reviews as thoroughly as you do. Absolutely excellent and much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏
As far as the lie angle difference in the two different swings speeds I’d have to guess it has to do with the amount of shaft deflection at those 2 speeds 🤷🏻♂️
I just found your channel today. I really appreciate your thought process. You've created a niche compared to most other channels. As said by many comments, I really appreciate how you try to relate to the average (lower speed, less precise) golfers.
Reviews are honestly another level! So glad I subscribed. 👌
Thanks very much for the kind feedback 👍
Loving how in depth you go on these reviews
Some love, some hate. I'd rather be honest and show comprehensive head data to prove any statements made... Glad you enjoy the content 👍
Great review and detail again. However, I do have one comment and one question! Firstly, 90 mph swing speed is more towards average rather than slow (based on Arccos accumulated data). Then, my question is what is the optimal launch angle and spin rate for 90 mph swing? This review was for 9 degree loft setting, giving less than 2,000 spin, so launch angle and spin possibly too low for optimum?
@@zazhou I live in this speed range so I can tell you what I've been told, which is 14 to 16 degrees and around 2400-2600 spin. It's been a pretty constant answer regardless of which fitter I've spoken to.
@@stevedietrich8936 thanks for the feedback. What loft setting and angle of attack do you use to achieve this?
Hi Steve, very much depends on your dynamic loft tenancies but the standard 10 to 11 degrees hitting up by a few degrees would give you ball park best.
The reason for doing everything at the sane loft was so people could gain an idea of how the heads react and then also at different speeds. Then it wouldn't be difficult for golfers to see what they'd need to change say loft to, to gain further distance advantage 👍
Picked up a g430 Max this week and went for the 10.5 deg knocked down to 9 deg loft, instead of the 9 deg head.
That was because I like to see an open face at set up and it performed better too.
This club is a cheat code folks, it’s ridiculous how forgiving it is, and, here’s the rub, I reckon the confidence that breeds in you means that you will start to swing longer and faster anyway.
Thus tests like this - excellent review again sir - only tell part of the picture.
I played my first competitive winter matchplay with it yesterday and on the 15th carried it 262 yards. I knew this because it was still by it’s pitchmark.
That was at 9 deg celcius and layered up. I reckon that converts to 270 in the summer and this means it’s up with my TSi3 but it’s miles more forgiving - so I’ll take the dry 5-10 yard loss in the simulator room, because over a season of golf I have to be gaining strokes.
Unbelievable club.
Would love to see forgiveness compare. 430 v 425 v a different 2023 ‘max’ driver. So we can place compared to last year and a competitor. Great vid
Just saw 430 is more forgiving
Great review Jay, very thorough.
Toe Droop would be my answer to your question.
Good point re club data, I don’t see the point of a club review without it!
Correct 👍
I agree I don't see the point either, although for absolute views, the less complicated and more cinematic the better for them, but the physical quality of the review suffers greatly for the average golfer that buy all this equipment..... 👍
Thanks for doing the 90 mph swing speed. It is much closer to my swing speed
Thanks!
Really glad you enjoyed the content 👍
Nice comprehensive review, and it was interesting to see your data from my lower speed perspective. I would be curious to know what you think of the different stock shafts. An idea for another video perhaps? Had to edit because I forgot to answer your question regarding lie angle. Only thing I can think of is head droop when you go at it harder.
100% correct 👍
Unfortunately I'm not really shaft sensitive so tend to deliver the same regardless of what shaft I use. I normally see a difference in lie but due to the lack of loft and ball on a tee, I don't actually see any flight changes with shafts 👍
great review , many thanks. ive just bought a Max
Many thanks Jay i think with my clubhead speed of 85mph would dictate that the g430 hl would be better for mee as i do currently play a Tsi1 driver which is their lightest one. I will need to go out a test the various models before making a purchase.
Thank's Jay historically never had much success with Ping drivers with regards to forgiveness and launch. Currently using Tsi drver fairway and hybrid very well. Only wish you did some Titleist reviews
I’m about to buy one of the 430 drivers, I’m a 74 year old golfer playing to a 14 handicap which of these drivers would you recommend based on my aging profile considering I’m trying for distance and forgiveness as I age? Max, SFT, LST, ???
Which one is right for you by decided by your swing pattern but overall there's not going to be a huge amount of distance difference between them and slow swing speeds. The MAX will be the most forgiving, the SFT will only help with a softening out a slice miss hit, and the LST is best in the the hands of faster swings. If you join the AGN discord there's a chance we could help in more detail. see the video description for the discord link.
Thanks for replying 👍
Always try to respond to as many comments as possible 👍
What launch spin and land angle you reckon you'd post with a 9° head with one of the 65 tour shafts so doesn't droop as much. If still went left could flatten lie angle out to 55.5 ? Overall thought process is how to make the max low spin at your speeds so you can have your cake and eat it. Forgiveness, length and no toey dippers that might get with the LST version.
I know someone who really needs this. Sprayed his driver face with impact spray and after his session it looked like he punched a bowl of porridge
Favourite comment so far 😂😂
Toe up due to shaft flex? Deflects more with faster swing (and this is your normal shaft?)
droop! Cool way to measure it too
going for this or the callaway when you can compare well done again
Ping all day
Going to be doing the Callaway very very soon. 👍
your thoughts on which as the best distanc with forgivness for a 18 hnd who hits up on driver about 4or5 deg butdose not get much backspin 1800 /2400@@AskGolfNut
Have you got the rest of your club delivery data?
not all but age 73 ball speed not mph with driver is around 115/120 carry is about185 /195 have lessons every 2 weeks had to change swing over last 2 years gradual thanks@@AskGolfNut
Great review, as always Jay
Btw shame Quad doesn't actually calculate exact distance of mishits from centre point. It's a very easy calculation, just using Pythagorean theorem. Maybe in the next upgrade
It does measure exact strike point but it can't see or understand roll and bulge. Every manufacturer has a differing amount the face is distorted so every face would have to be mapped into quad or they released GC5 that had the option to cover the face with dots and therefore give the possibility of measuring what face/loft angle was present at the strike point impact 👍
@@AskGolfNut Wow, had now idea it was so complex! Many thx for replying
watching your new Driver videos and i am totally confused on which i am leaning towards ( Ping G430 , Taylormade Stealth2 , Cobra Aerojet , Callaway Paradym , Titleist TSR2 ) they all are looking and performing so good ....Question ? which do you think would suit me ( just curious ) I am 58 years old 5'7 in height..9 handicap driver swing speed about 90-94.....looking for distance and forgiveness ... Interested in your thoughts.... i do not live near a place where i can get fitted..pretty much know my stats that i need in a shaft and length..44 1/2 in length....regular flex...normally hit a high ball flight...thx... cheers from Vulcan Alberta
Any and all of those will work depending on how you deliver the club individually with each. They all, have certain differences, most of them come in different models to cater for as many golfers as possible and all cost a lot of money, some more than others.
Forgiveness is key to understanding your general performance on the course so as a blind guess you'd never be too fair wrong going with a Ping.
Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
Hi Spank I seem to recall that TXG have a place at Calgary not to far from you, (may be wrong) you seem to have a very detailed knowledge about your swing👍,maybe you could try the Different Driver’s there, Dickey UK
You need to apply the pythagorean theorem to get the total distance from center. The 2 numbers: across and down for example, form a triangle and the distance to the center is the hypotenuse. The two numbers aren’t additive.
Hi Derek, from a trigonometric point of view you are absolutely right, if referencing the hypotenuse was a direct correlation to the amount of efficiency drop off, however because both the vertical and horizontal miss compound together then actually working in pure gross numbers works much much better. Using hypotenuse doesn't show up the huge drop off in efficiency with only a relatively small increase in hypotenuse length. So after many months of experimenting and gaining miss hit data I made the determination many years ago that gross deviation is the only really way to show the drop off variance.
Appreciate the comment and for the thought pattern in trying to give constructive feedback. Its comments like this that are done in a respectful way that if used correctly by the content creator, can greatly improve the viewing experience 👍👍
Can you do a Stealth 2 vs G430 video.
Forgiveness and shot shape with the head at standard loft/lie setting with the hotel adjustment.
I’m looking to get a new driver. I want the most forgiving driver but do not want a head that goes left. Watching a few videos…seems the G430 is draw biased but the Stealth 2 is pretty neutral in flight.
Hi Patrick. If forgiveness is top of your list of requirements then G430 will offer that over the Stealth 2. You have adjustment on the head in terms of the weight system to return it more neutral, also there is adjustability on the hozel in flat settings that can further counter any potential draw bias. If forgiveness is first and foremost then the G430 is the most forgiving driver on the market 👍🏻
Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut thank you…My also concerned that to take the 10.5 head and turn it down to protect from the left…that I reduce spin too much and it falls out of the sky. I only swing about 100-105 on a good day. I need loft but need to retain spin on mishits. So was looking for a nuetral flighted head with relatively good, consistent spin in the 2000-2500 range. Not fall below 2000 on mishits. Ping seems to fit the bill…just worried about over drawing it. I was also looking at your review of the Callaway Paradym. Seems nuetral to fade bias and pretty good across the face as well. What are your thoughts between the paradigm and ping g430? I’d rather miss right with a spinny cut then turn one over left and short and running….know what I mean.
@patrickhoward4080 you could opt for the fade settings on the opposite side of the loft sleeve that, would bring it more neutral. If its forgiveness no 1 on the list then you'll struggle to top the G430 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut G430 it is!!!! Thanks for the feedback. I think how you test drivers and hit them all over the face to find the weaknesses with spin drop, etc is the best way to truly test it. Not people hitting out of the middle 10/10 balls. Keep grinding! Love the content!
@patrickhoward4080 Grind is the word 😊
Oh and the battle for forgiveness new ping driver against the new Mizuno driver?
Difference in shaft deflection with the different club speeds
Perfect David, date go into the physics surrounding the change? 😊👍
Which shaft are you losing, you having said
I have had a ping g400 standard driver 5years swing speed 90 mph spinning at 2900carry 200 yards ping tour 65regular shaft am I losing 24yars carry cos of high spin number or has technology moved on in that 5years since I have had the driver thanks
Higher than preferred spin for sure, possibly since launch characteristics aren't quite ideal either. It won't be hugely better like for like, but a good fitting with an expert that also coaches can point out sobe very easy fixes to help increase the carry distances 👍
More toe up because there is less droop due to less force on the shaft due to less speed. This is where the old swing x speed need y flex comes from. However wrong that adage maybe.
You are correct with the answer to the question posed. Anyone in golf, understanding physics and they're well on the way to making their learning and understanding of the swing much easier.
Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
Huge diff when not using a counterbalanced shaft?
The old one was, using a non counterbalanced shaft with the old heads was only really known with really strong players. Now the new heads are a fraction lighter, the shaft choices are now a bit more ranging 👍
@@AskGolfNut I was wondering about how you liked that shaft? Everything I saw was that is a CB shaft. Incredible review BTW.
by reducing 1.5* I assume you opened the face? is this is "real" improvement over my OLD G400Max?
The G400 Max still stands out as, one of the most forgiving drivers of all time. A bit spinney but very very forgiving. It's loft sleeve neck doesn't move as much as the newer sleeve but it's only 1 degree in total so getting the correct lofted head is still very important 👍
@@AskGolfNut does changing 9* to 8* also open the face a bit and visa versa?
It does 👍 but only a very very small amount and easily countered 👍
@@AskGolfNut last follow up (thank you for relying!!), I heard my g400max was same as todays SFT so I called ping last week and they confirmed that (major bad news), this could be a real reason my draws can turn in duck hooks? SFT is made for slicers NOT drawers like me, yikes. Seems 425/430 max or even LST would be better fit then my gamer g400max?
@home4ya465 unless I'm getting the wrong end of the stick, the G400 Max was as close to Neutral as Ping had at the time with the SFT being draw biased and the LST slightly fade biased. The G400 Max is still one of the most forgiving drivers of all time and only slightly lags behind the most modern day offering. If you are looking for forgiveness with as neutral as possible bias then the G400 Max is absolutely fine. If the flight isn't to your liking I would think that it would be swing related rather than a distinctly poorly fitted head option 👍
Less head droop swinging at 90mph.
We may have a winner 🥇 😊
My thought exactly…
More shaft droop with the faster swing speed
Spot on 👍👍👍
shaft droop at impact
Absolutely right 👍
Bonjour quel Shaft X ,S et qu’elle marque ?
Hang on a mo, I'll Google translate that and get back to you 👍
Standard Length Stiff shaft 👍
Any plans to test the new Callaway drivers?
They'll be coming fairly soon, got the Mizuno ones to do then the Callaway will be next 👍
Shaft will flex more at Higher speeds
Shaft deflection increases with a faster transition to gain extra club head speed. Centre of gravity of the head tries to match that of the shaft and the shaft droops more, showing increased vertical deflection (lie angle change).
100% correct 👍
Shaft bends more the faster you swing.
Under usual circumstances you are correct although its how someone loads a shaft that is the biggest demoninator in the bend profile required so it could go either way. But on balance and in general you are absolutely correct. 👍
Not change a-foot lol
less shaft deflection/head droop at slower speed. i.e. shaft doesn't fit the slower swing player optimally
Absolutely correct that the shaft deflection lessens with the reduction with speed. Interesting depending how the golfer transitions and with what, wrist angle, deflection can either be a varied mix of deflection in lie/loft or a singular amount of each 👍
