Yamaha Grizzly 700 CVT Primary Clutch Cleaning

  • Almost 5000kms. on the Yamaha Grizzly 700, so we figured we better clean up the front primary clutch. It really wasn't that bad but got it done anyways. Also changed the belt while we were in there but the original showed hardly any wear. It did have some small cracking going on between the cogs though.
    Couldn't find any Yamaha Grizzly Grease so we used Lucas Xtra Heavy Duty Wheel Bearing Grease. Seems to work fine so far.
    This isn't meant to be a How-To as it was the first time we did it, but we thought some of you might like to see what it looks like inside there if you never have before.
    Please consult your shop manual for the proper procedures and bolt torque specifications for your ride.

    Great video! New to ATVs and trying to get a grip on how they work so this has helped me a lot. Just bought a 2016 Kawasaki Teryx and plan on doing the belt myself to save money. Now all I need now is a video on how to get TO the CVT on a Teryx and I'll be set LOL.

    4500 miles on my grizzly, i have never done this and have never had any issues. I have only done regular oil changes, air filter maintenance, coolant change, 1 spark plug, and replaced battery once. still runs like the day i bought it off the showroom floor.

      Yours is in desperate need of a cleaning then. Especially if you have spent any time in dusty conditions. Your grease will get hard and the rollers can't travel the full channel.

    Great job Cubbee, I was a newby with this job just a month ago and it went very well. Mine was at about 5400 kms (though with larger tires and then tracks the last 4 or 5 years the odometer has to be a little off) and there were zero cracks between the lugs. The grease was far too dirty and tacky but it was still doing surprisingly well. Lost maybe 2mm on the belt in both dimensions, remarkable. Allegedly these are 11,000km clutches. We dropped in four 14.7gram Dalton kit weights (a real pain to press out the stock ones and re-insert the others) but what a difference on the low end, snappy! Pretty much the same thing as the "Kodiak Conversion." The only difference I learned different was putting some grease on the outside of the cam plate, into the wells above the sliders but looked very good to this newby and I watched a lot of vids on it! Fantastic overview. We did pull of the brake lever, good to know it's doable without that. We didn't bother with the side panel above the clutch, worked out well. Looking forward to seeing that Grizz wheelie even better now as the rollers should move smooth as silk now. Any flat spots on the plastic roller housings?

    • @cubbeezx
      @cubbeezx  10 років тому +1

      The Grizz wheelies just as good, and I think I might have gained a bit back on the top end. LOL I have noticed it is a bit quieter now too...less "whining". The roller housings look good, and hopefully they'll be good for another 4500km's. It sure was a messy job getting all the old grease out. What did you use to clean it? I used varsol and brake cleaner but still took a lot of rags. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @canesser1
      @canesser1 10 років тому +1

      Yes, noticed it ran quieter too. I just used a can of degreaser after wiping out as much as I could with paper towels. Totally grungy job! We really don't need any more top end in those short little wheel bases anyway! What a clutch those Yamahas have!!

  • @gregrowe1168
    @gregrowe1168 10 років тому

    I remember back when I had my 660 grizzly it seemed like it was a bit sluggish even after putting on a new belt. Originally thought the belt was defective, it was a less expensive aftermarket belt. Apparently the clutch weights had some gunk around them and weren't allowing the clutch to engage quite as quickly or strongly as it could. Took them out and soaked them in some diesel fuel to clean all the gunk off and put it all back together and it seemed like a new machine then. I guess we went through more sand and mud than we realized and somehow it had gotten in there, I don't think it was sealed well. It really made a huge difference in the performance of the machine.

    • @cubbeezx
      @cubbeezx  10 років тому

      That's good to know Greg...you wonder how dirt/sand gets into some of these places! But it does! Cleaning I guess just makes everything run smoother again. Thanks for stopping by and checking out the vid and commenting!

    So I commented awhile ago on this video & I would like to say I used the exact same grease & looked up how much to put on the rollers & around them. That particular grease did not hold up to the job. At first I thought it was great but within the first 100 miles it looked like it couldn't withstand the heat. I do not recommend this stuff at all. Still love your videos & you give great tutorials.

    • @cubbeezx
      @cubbeezx  8 років тому

      +Johnathon Dailey Sorry to hear about the grease not withstanding the heat. We just used what we could get locally and after a few more thousand kilometers on the Grizzly since we made this video we haven't had any issues with ours. Glad you enjoy the videos and thanks for watching.

    Hey guys, i just got it done on my grizzly 450 at the local Yamahastore, the serviceguy is very experienced and probably very old to and he told me that he wiped all the old greese out with papertowel and then washed the variatorparts in gasoline and a small brush...easy and cheap...he also told me that the clutch on the 450 is identical with the one on grizzly 700 and he used 200 grams ( 1/5 kilo ) to re-greese it...it now runs very smooth!
    He also told me that the most Grizzlys has a problem with the left rear axel seal...its often leaks of oil because it is not mounted spot on from factory so check that out on your bike (they repair that on warranty)...also he adjusted the front Wheel`s from 6 millimeter ( 1/4 inch ) toe-out to 2 millimeter toe-in because it is way off from factory and my bike runs straight as an Arrow on the road now...just a feew tips for you guys!
    Now drive safe =)

    Very good job Cubbee! I really enjoyed seeing an up close view of the Grizz to see how it is designed. I have to admit, I had never seen the inside of those clutches in a CVT until now. Thanks for showing the internals of the CVT and how you did the service job. I thought one time I had read something about CVT transmissions having a fan to cool the belt and clutches? Is this true, does yours have a cooling fan for the CVT? Thanks for taking the time to make the video, I enjoyed it!!!!

      Hi Palomino! Thanks for checking out the vid. The CVT design is pretty cool and so simple. There is a fan, but not specific for the clutch...it does kick in when the engine starts getting warm..it is located up at the front more. Thanks again, and happy riding!

    Looks like you're a pro at this. Haha. If you hadn't told us it was your first time I would have though that you'd done many of these before. Lol. It's a pretty slick system. So simple. I think those will take over the market if they haven't already. My lawn mower might have something similar to that in it. It's an automatic. I've been trying to figure out how it works. This video did help. You forgot to try reverse. Lol. I'm sure it worked though. If you have all of that apart you might as well change the belt. You made the right decision there. Great video as usual.

      If your in dusty conditions often, do this every year or 2. Or around 2000-3000 miles roughly. You can go greaseless on the rollers, but make sure to lube the shaft and carrier bushing. The grease is not for lubrication, it's for noise suppression.

    Is the wet clutch outer shaft same diameter as the rhino? where did you pick up the shims? Are they actually washers?

    • @cubbeezx
      @cubbeezx  8 років тому

      +Rhino Rider Not sure if they are the same as the rhino..haven't had any experience with them. The shims look like washers...they came from a snowmobile dealer but not made specifically for the shim mod. Nice video. I just hit 713km on my 13 grizz 450 so hopefully I won't have to this any time soon but nice to know it's there when I need it. Have you done any service on your yamaha 's lately. I'd like to see a video of it. No pressure just like to see how it's done. Nice video again. Keep em coming.

    actually, since there's a thick layer of teflon all around the rollers, there's no need to put any grease.
    I do a little in the inside of the spacer u show at 7.42.
    the clutch systems are very very similar to each other (suzuki and yamaha). I think the same for the brute force, while the honda rincon works completely different . The honda 's got a very sophisticated shift , I would like to try it someday

    Well you inspired me with this one so I dove in headfirst and adjusted the valves on mine today. I have an 09 700 and after you get all the plastic off its pretty easy if you are somewhat mechanically inclined. Have you attempted this yet or do you leave internals to the dealer? Mine were too tight and they haven't been adjusted since new. Some say the Grizz's tighten up during break in. I believe it. Measured at .003 before adjusting to specs marked under seat. Runs way better. Can you say "WHEELIE!!!"?

    • @cubbeezx
      @cubbeezx  10 років тому

      Hey! Right on and good for you rolling up your sleeves and "digging" in! I keep saying I should check the valves but I haven't yet. I too had heard that they adjust themselves after break in. Good to know and that it helped performance....who doesn't want to WHEELIE on a Grizz. Might have to be my next "maintenance". Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Just picked up a '13 550 with 800km. Have had it for about 4 days, almost at 1k now. Loving it so far. I noticed when you were revving it with the clutch cover off at around the 12:59 and 13:09 marks, there was a knocking noise at the begging of each rev. Seems like my 550 makes this noise as well. Is this common with Yamahas? Was getting scared that I bought a unit with a bad bottom end.

      Listened to the video again and the noise I think you are referring to is the "blip" of the throttle..but kind of hard to tell....if yours sounds like ours then I don' think I'd be concerned as ours now has over 8000 km's on it and it's running great! Thanks for checking out our videos and hope you get out exploring. Happy Trails!

      I think there are different types of CVTs depending on brand. I think yamaha uses a wet clutch system so that the belt is always engaged where as some other brands use a kinda of slip system where the belt is actually disengaged at idle. Not sure of all brands use which, but I am fairly certain polaris uses the slippy system. Probably why you didn't notice any grease.
