Mr. Jordan, this is one of my favorite videos you released. I am a 58-year-old, VERY average Joe practitioner, train twice a week on average, total hobbyist, in year 14 with BJJ. You shared principles that, for me, are easier to remember. Learning the mechanics is important but sometimes, the number of details can be overwhelming in a series of technics. But there are numerous times I have no idea what my partner is doing to me but to remember "Keep elbows tight" or "Keep my butt low" or "Keep their feet off of you" is easier to remember for us old guys. Thank you for all the great content!
Every time I'd figure one of these out (often through Priit Mikhelson/Chris Paines videos), my jiu-jitsu experienced a quantum leap forward. Even at advanced blue belt I still have a few to internalise (lost gold in a tournament recently by not finishing the sweep/sweeping myself), but for beginners, this is pure gold. Unfortunately, whenever one of them asks me for help and I point out that they are making one of these conceptual mistakes, they go away unhappy that I didn't give them a specific technique/details.
As a white belt I would definitely appreciate what you're doing!! When I first began I was definitely looking more for techniques/submissions but now with a bit more experience I'm realizing it's much more valuable to know how to escape and just survive and not get submitted, at least for the level I'm currently at.
Purple belt here. This was great. I caught myself reaching up from bottom the other day. What was I thinking?! I appreciate videos like this from black belts, because they see these things as basic things that every BJJ fighter should know not to do. They're obvious, or so they seem. I'm always questioning "am I making these common beginner mistakes?" Great breakdown, and there are a few in here that I should really focus on. I'll be referring back to this video. Also, LMNT is life. I use it daily, for preparing and recovering from a hot day working outside on the homestead, and the same for BJJ classes.
Thanks for this video. These are great reminders as a blue belt who still makes many beginner mistakes I need to be constantly reminded of these to clean up bad habits.
Jordan actually did give us 20 tips (not counting “duping” us with his newsletter, which is chock full of excellent advice and insight). There were two tip number 5s.
The thing that is so great about these videos you post and what distinguishes them from most other grappling videos on YT is the conceptual nature. Keep it up! Thanks, man.
Want to say a huge thanks for this video! Started rolling again after pausing jujutsu Kai for 8 years. I never really got good at ground. After this video I held my ground in every sparring tonight at training!!!
My man, yes! I love this! I have been training for so long it’s automatic. Now I can go over this friends and team members who need to watch this. Str8 Golden!
Hey Jordan, I just started training BJJ in February, and I have to say your videos have been an amazing resource. Really appreciate the plethora of high-quality, clear, practical advise you put out. You're like the Gabriel Varga of BJJ UA-cam 🙂 Shame that your place is too far out from Toronto for it to be practical as my main training gym, but it'd be awesome to visit it some time 🙂
Good stuff. At a higher level, I find focusing on only a few techniques to be a lot more effective than trying to learn everything I can. Build a ground game from various positions and drill those techniques constantly. So many new guys I talk to want to go straight to learning cool inversions and submissions, but I think many miss the point that you don't want to have to *think* about doing these moves, they need to come naturally in the situation. This is where I find the repetitive drilling/live drilling ups the game immensely. In my year of rolling, I see my core techniques gradually getting better and better and once I'm happy with them I'll move onto others.
There's a ton of good jiujitsu videos and creators but you absolutely are one of the best. Your detail and tips/tricks are amazing. Thank you so much. All these tips will help so much when drilling/rolling.
Once again, SO MUCH INFO! Going to have to break this into sections and study over and over. Thank you for producing such great content. Keep up the good work! God Bless!
Amazing. I'm so guilty of sweeping myself up until fairly recently (I'm a blue belt) because I'm more comfortable playing guard than being on top. I'm trying to work on it!
Thank you! As a white belt, I definitely committed some of these sins lol. But after I became more aware, I was able to exploit these errors when rolling with other white belts.
Great video. Nice simple concepts. This isnt only useful for beginners. Old heads need these reminders now and then. Especially when operating on autopilot
Good stuff, thanks. Only after a bit over a year of practicing do I understand these mistakes and how I keep making them, so subscribed. Also, I can watch these even in bed as my wife says you have a relaxing voice lol.
Love this video. You should do more of these. Maybe you should go in more depth with each of the 19 mistakes? I'd be thankful for that. Thanks, Jordan.
It was much easier for me to follow along with what you're saying in this video. I appreciate what you're doing for the BJJ community. Been listening to your podcast while I work lately.
Really great video. Starting back in BJJ and finding so many times when I just don't know what I should be doing. This really helps give me a better concept of what I should be doing at all times.
Adding this video to my Jiu-jitsu analysis to recognize which mistakes i am making and what i can do stop making those mistakes in the future. Such a great video and I recommend every gym to give this video to their new students 😂
This is great stuff! Every time a new guy asks me what to focus on, i've told them "frames, base, hooks and head control". Now i just send them this video instead 🤣 i'm pretty new my self too so this video was super helpful. Just got my blue belt.
Great breakdown of these mistakes, many of which I make. You make a good point about how sometimes a breakdown in discipline leads to these mistakes, especially when fatigue sets in. I was confused about not letting your grips past the center line. For example, trying to pass from the top half guard, leaning across your partner, and reaching for an underhook - is that overextending and would be a mistake? Thank you!
That would not be an example of crossing the centre line because it's the near side of the belly button you don't want to cross into. You want your near side grip to control their far side. Hope that makes sense 🙂
My Australian friend Kieren is in Canada right now helping me finish it up. It's do or die to get it finished in the next 2 weeks. It's shaping up better than I ever expected. Not much longer 🙂
