Practically, this shield should do fine for a strong operator that's already fully covered in body armour and tasked with changing into a room. It should be thought of additional layer of protection over body armour instead of do it all shield for an unarmored operator.
It is non-individual shield. Shield-wearer(Number One) going forward group of 2-5 operators,one-by-one,step-by-step. It is not personal shield, but mobile bulletproof wall for all operators in group
its literal job is to protect an operator when they're doing unorthodox urban tactics like bum rushing a target and exposing themselves. in firefights exposing yourself means you get killed but with shields you can expose yourself without getting killed

Hello from Russia! As always, GT, great video. First ballistic test on VANT I've ever seen - many thanks for such content! And, well, if anyone is wondering, here's some info on the VANT: (I'm into all our police stuff and shields are no exception) FORT Technologies stuff are almost exclusively made for police usage. And ВАНТ-ВМ (eng. VANT-VM; the one in the vid) is no exception. It's more then 10 years old by now and was essentially the first full-size shield for FSB/SOBR units. Yes, there were shields like Забор-С/Забор-М (eng. Zabor-S/Zabor-M; goggle them up, its ridiculous), but judging from the fact that I've only seen them on the training photos of regional units, whom are always underfunded, they were either too impractical or came up at the same time as VANT. The shield has level 4 ballistic protection (level 5 pre-2014 reform) and should stop an LPS gz round out of SVD from 5-10 meters. And, considering 7.62x54R is loosely the same as .308, we can see that it can - M80 proves that. The red velcro in the center is meant to attract the attackers eye - storming of the house usually goes with a lot of suppressive fire, shouts and overall intimidation of an enemy - sum it up with the fact that VANT is usually equipped with a strobe and you'll get an enemy who'll only see a constantly flashing light and a big red square entering a room). He'll probably shoot it, not something else. About the obsolescence of the technologies used: VANT is by far the most produced shield in Russia and it still does its job greatly - so why change anything? Yes, we already have more modern shields (by FORT themselves and by NPP Klass), but you should understand that replacing something in anything that is state-owned, especially in Russia, is EXTREMELY difficult - we have a massive corruption problem in every branch of the state. Plus we're talking about military and police here - they are very conservative. About the weight: IIRC, FORT made special attachment system for bulletproof vests that has MOLLE on them. It comes with the shield. And also consider that police guys are more buffed than the army guys. And yes, the VANT was and is used in the military in relatively small numbers - our army has different SOF's after all. They are used by FSB and SOBR teams in Ukraine rn.
@@skepticalbadger there are coincidentally 2 different fort companies. Fort, the Ukrainian arms manufacturers, and fort technologies, russian gear maker
Charlie, hello. I've watched a lot of your videos, you've done a great job. I would just like to correct you, ballistic shields such as "Vant-LM" and "Vant-VM" are not used by army units. They are used by the internal troops of the FSB and OMON, the so-called "anti-terror groups" aimed at countering gangs and terrorists, respectively, they are designed to protect against fragments of homemade call devices and light weapons.
I see that you are a prominent expert in military affairs and world politics, that you have paid attention and expressed your position to my comment on a specific issue that does not relate to anything in the ongoing processes of global reformatting of the system of international relations. Yeah and you also gotta take into Account that the guy wielding that shield probably is wearing his standard issue plate carrier aswell so even if some strays pierce the shield on weakened spots their energy is so low they wont harm the Operator
True. For what it is, i consider it quite a good armour. Maybe not battlefield armour for running arround, but for clearing buildings and close encounter operations it is quite good.
The 5.56mm greentip round you fired at that shield still cannot make a bulge at back because despite its tungsten penetrator, it's still too light to pierce that type of shield. The round simply lacks the inertial energy to penetrate thick armor.
@@Someguy6571 The defacto heavy standard for over a century, and may still see purpose for another hundred years. That is mind blowing to me. At the very least, 30.06 heavily influences the current direction of some ammo design in a world of increasing body armor.
It came about on the tail end of the 'battle rifle' days. WW1 still had engagement ranges >800m so they used a potent rounds at long ranges as the M1 Garand development started in 1928 and it made logistical sense to use the ammunition that the U.S. both had stockpiles of and the capacity to produce in mass. WWII however proved that newer infantry tactics and engagements would be at much shorter distances and a lot more fluid so the 30-06 was extreme overkill. Which is why the M1 Carbine was quite popular among troops that could get their hands on one. Lighter, could carry a lot more ammo. I still enjoy using the 30-06 for hunting but in military use the 7.62x51 is more then enough. Interestingly the commercial .308 is actually quite a bit hotter then the military 7.62x51. While 5.56 is hotter then the standard commercial .223
yeah, its mostly because how overpowered the newer gunpowder was vs older stuff, so they went all overkill, worse yet is a older Mosin or G98 (not K98K)
GT was always entertaining, but Charlie adds a whole new depth to the entire show, having such an opposite energy in many complimentary ways to GT. Great fun to watch these videos!
I think it's more designed to stop many rounds of the AKM variety rather than huge rounds of the .50 cal variety. That legendary 30.06 is still such a sexy round.
Definitely an interesting contribution. I have to admit that Charlie is my favorite in all of this. If I were to comment, I couldn't help but say that I haven't seen anyone with this kind of armor go against a sniper rifle or in a real fight with this kind of protection. Thus, the contribution loses its weight.

@@макслюлюкин It would make sense to be very useful inside houses as there are way too many gaps for personal shields to cover in the open fields. Shields on the other hand, they close the cover gap between the home invader and the home defender where artillery is deemed too risky to use.

I could see it being handy going through a kill funnel (door) in a breaching scenario, where the bad guys pointing at you are unlikely to have anything heavier than an AK anyway. Better than taking a hit in the arm or leg. Still its niche, on par with a shotgun for breaching.
Due to being niche it is only used in CQB by guys like FSB and specialized military units like combat engineers who have heavy armor in addition to that shield as well.

It is not personal shield, but mobile bulletproof wall for all operators in group
the russians have a vest/harness specifically for use with this shield so that some of the weight is put on the shoulders and hips not just the arms.
its literal job is to protect an operator when they're doing unorthodox urban tactics like bum rushing a target and exposing themselves. in firefights exposing yourself means you get killed but with shields you can expose yourself without getting killed

Hello from Russia! As always, GT, great video. First ballistic test on VANT I've ever seen - many thanks for such content!
And, well, if anyone is wondering, here's some info on the VANT: (I'm into all our police stuff and shields are no exception)
FORT Technologies stuff are almost exclusively made for police usage.
About the obsolescence of the technologies used:
VANT is by far the most produced shield in Russia and it still does its job greatly - so why change anything? Yes, we already have more modern shields (by FORT themselves and by NPP Klass), but you should understand that replacing something in anything that is state-owned, especially in Russia, is EXTREMELY difficult - we have a massive corruption problem in every branch of the state. Plus we're talking about military and police here - they are very conservative.
About the weight:
IIRC, FORT made special attachment system for bulletproof vests that has MOLLE on them. It comes with the shield. And also consider that police guys are more buffed than the army guys.
And yes, the VANT was and is used in the military in relatively small numbers - our army has different SOF's after all. They are used by FSB and SOBR teams in Ukraine rn.
I was waiting for this comment.
Spot on comrade.
Er, aren't FORT Ukrainian?

30.06 is a hell of a round.

I could see it being handy going through a kill funnel (door) in a breaching scenario, where the bad guys pointing at you are unlikely to have anything heavier than an AK anyway. Better than taking a hit in the arm or leg. Still its niche, on par with a shotgun for breaching.

Then why were they spotted at Hostomel? Likely this is the infantry version of the cope cage. It doesn't work, but when your soldiers are dumb it's a moral boost.
@@karl8176 it is a special forces cqb shield, a basic infantry man not even trained to work behind that brick.
Stop calling body armor "bullet proof" it is bullet resistant. There are no such thing as bullet proof vest.
I’m not surprised they are still using it. Have you seen those drone videos? Like the dudes hiding underneath a tank, or the entrance to a position or something. This could save your life in situations they are often in.

For the record, youtube channel Oxide has tested Russian bodyarmor “Defender” and it was prooven that it can stop dosens of m855a1 like it’s nothing. Could be great to see you shooting some m995 tungsten core in this shield, this would be fun to watch.
That video was fake and all cgi
@@ThisIsMyUA-camHandle69 I doubt your claims given Oxide is rarely biased if ever.

One of the most entertaining episodes. Love it. I like this channel because the team doesn't take themselves seriously and with witty banter.
the scene of charlie as a squire... with the overly dramatic music and camera shots... Garand thumb praying on his garand.... is just hilarious and masterpiece of the hyperbole
