I know I'm 6 years late here (I am interested in buying this camera second hand) and I have to say, what a great all-around, to the point, informative video, no extra sauce, no unnecessary cuts with lame jokes, great effort on making sure that even the novice can understand the product, sir, your work is delight to my mind, eyes and ears. Thank you.
I always feel that at the end of one of your reviews I have the facts, pros and cons, and your feelings on those which, all the same, you do not use to batter the viewer to your conclusion (unlike lots of other reviewers). Thank you. Oh, and nice oranges!
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. In the end, the choice of a camera depends on your style and the photographs you plan to take. I'm certainly not capable of making a recommendation for anyone except myself - so I try to point out all the of issues I find valuable in making a decision. For some people it's features, for others it's usability and that's where I had issues with the E-M10-3 - great features, terrible usability. Sunkist.
@@MaartenHeilbron is that a good backup camera? Just got one with a 14-42 lens for 450 dollars. Is that a good deal? I use the fun xt30 as my primary camera but wanted to try Olympus for fun as wanted a backup camera body and the 4K capability is nice,m
Thank you so much for making this video. I bought this camera for Christmas. Both manuals pdf and booklet were confusing to me. I purchased this camera as a back up to my 80d. If it weren't for your video I'd still be so lost. Thank you so much for taking the time out to including instructions as well as your review. I just can't thank you enough, Maarten.
I just traded my nikon d5600 and 30mm 1.8 for this camera bundle and was looking for a guide since I'm new to the olympus ecosystem. I have to say that you are an amazing reviewer and even more I got a very good teacher vibe from the entire video. So clear explanations with practical examples and in-depth analysis and working of different features. Worth the time and would highly recommend my friends to look for your channel sir. You are awesome keep them coming.
Thank you, sir! This is the most comprehensive review and demonstration I have seen. I'm getting this camera tomorrow and I am sure I'll be referencing this video over and over and over. Yes, the menus are pretty horrible, but after the learning curve it can't be beaten for the price to performance value! This is currently selling as a package for €599 with the 45mm f1.8 lens included in Finland. Just subscribed and hit that notification button!
This is my kind of video, appreciate the super clear zoom-ins to highlight the camera build and features (ngl it looks bigger than it really is). I like your usability focus and as a usability researcher myself I think I'm in for finding lots of problems with the experience of this camera!
Best review I have seen on UA-cam! The information is organized, extremely detailed, and still very succinct! Your voice gives me a kind of “Rick Steves” vibe, which is a wonderful compliment because I love his voice and grew up watching his travel shows. Thank you!
I just received a new one today. It took about a half an hour to set it up the way I like it for stills, which is why I bought it. I also got the 12-40 f2.8 lens, which is as heavy as the body is!! I have been shooting for a long time, but do not have the patience for complexity and deep menus. It seems to work well, fits my right hand better than any other small mirrorless camera does, my fingers naturally rest on the shutter button and dials without moving my grip. I prefer the tilt screen vs a flip out screen, the EVF is good enough and the build quality is better than I expected. All for not much money compared to almost anything else. I just sold all of my Panasonic gear except the G85, which I intend on using for video mostly. Now to get a 17mm prime, a 30mm macro, and a telephoto. Thanks for your review, a most excellent and complete one.
Always nice to see your avatar - and to read your kind words. It may be a bit of a challenge for someone coming from a smartphone, there are certainly easier to use cameras. On the other hand, a lot of really great features you won't find on a phone.
One of the best YT reviews of Olympus camera, thank you :) Olympus camera are hard to review, they usually being designed as an imaging machine instead of just a camera, you did a great job!
I picked this camera up in October. I agree that the movie settings were hard to find at first but there is a lot of options once you dig in. The video quality was surprisingly good, the stabilization is amazing. Thanks for this video, it answered a lot of questions of some of the features. It's also nice to see Toronto in these scenes. I'd recommend the camera but wished the software allowed more customization in the different modes. This may have been a choice to help intuitiveness but would limit users as they grew with the system.
Just bought this camera in near mint condition for about 220 euros with the 14-42 lens, and this video has been helpful to understand a bit more about. It will be a learning curve coming from the Sony Nex 5R which is a lot simpler but I really love the camera already. For the budget shooter, in 2022, this camera is a gem. Thank you for the detailed review.
Thanks for this VERY comprehensive review. It's now 2020 and I'm considering buying one because the price has fallen pretty low. Thanks for the honest opinion.
Just purchased this camera in 2021and your review (aka tutorial) is so helpful. I have an OM1 ii but think this camera will be fun to carry around with a small lens and capture images on the go.
I'm literally new to m43 or any lens camera out there, and, I just got my EM10 Mark iii a few days ago. Been searching for several useful channel to learn how to use this camera and here I am - finally found one video that I will surely have to constantly watch over and over again as my beginner guide to learn more about this camera! Thank you for making this wonderful and helpful video sir! Love From Malaysia!
Well, lots of negatives here, but I've looked at some very high quality shots on Flikr and equally high quality videos which show some lovely natural colours and beautifully sharp footage equal to the comparable and excellent GX80/85. I think both are fantastic cameras for the price. We get so used to "features" and deep menu tweaks and sometimes that obscures the most important thing : The IMAGE. I think there are a lot of harsh comments here about almost everything except the pictures!
What a great review! I subscribed! I bought this camera and absolutely LOVE it! It’s so small and I love the art filters. Grainy and Sepia are my favorites. The IBIS is incredible, and did I mention it is TINY?? This paired with the 17mm 1.8 are my “goto” for street and travel photography. I do agree the menu can be frustrating. They did separate some menu items that should be placed together. Your great review helped me learn how to navigate the menus much better! Thank you!
Probably the best review I've ever seen in my life - in any category! Great job and thank you very much for providing all this information. I'm thinking of buying this camera for video purposes. Right now I am filming with my phone, Huawei P30. Mostly in nature. But I'm thinking this camera would provide me more functions and higher quality, in terms of videography. The stabilizer, small size and image quality is what's drawing me. What do you think? Should I continue with my phone, or is this camera much better? Perhaps you have any other recommendation in this price class? Thanks in advance!
I'm also thinking of buying GX80 I'm checking you review of that camera (here: ua-cam.com/video/4MQPyLE_7ys/v-deo.html) - but would still appreciate your input. DMC-GX80 or EM 10 mark 3, if my biggest intention is to film? Again thanks for great content and sorry for my long comments.
@@MaartenHeilbron Great stuff, I was looking at GX80 videos all night yesterday and it seem to be the better fit. Mainly I am looking for better quality in my videos. Mobile phone feels a bit grainy and the movements are jittery. Thanks for your input!
Another great review. I ended up getting this camera mainly for travel (I like to travel light) along with the Olympus 14-150. I also have mixed feelings about this camera but I love the Olympus jpeg quality. Your videos make me want to visit Toronto (my father’s family comes from the Toronto area). Keep up your great work!!
Thanks Maarten. The latest mark 4 model seems to have fixed quite a few shortfalls that you mentioned and is on my shortlist as a travel camera, alongside the Canon M50 mk2 and potentially the X-T30 if the price drops a bit now the mark 2 is out. My head is saying the Fuji but I’ll be interested to see all 3.
Nice review....I chose the E-M10 Mll over the lll for its metal body and feature difference and great price with a better kit lens for $449 USD. There IMO is no other camera in this price range that gives you a decent IQ and feature set. While no camera is perfect Olympus keeps it's zen. My example is fast to touch focus in all modes. While this is a complicated camera with it's limits, it becomes second nature with use (like any camera). Its a great complex camera that is very capable and a great tool for fun photography. Olympus ZEN :)
Excellent review! As a beginner who will be purchasing his first mirrorless camera, would you recommend the GX85 or E-M10 Mark III? I am looking for a travel camera and will be using it for both photos and videos. Small form factor is important and would probably bring along a maximum of 1 lens.
I'm giving away the subject of an upcoming video of mine, but I opted to not "upgrade" my E-M10 mark 2 to this camera, and went the used EM5 mark 2 route. I don't appreciate the changes they made here. You were spot on with your assessment of this camera. Having said all that, I am confident that the E-m5 mark 3 will be an amazing camera, and I have no doubt that I will upgrade to that when it comes out.
your review is really great. It is helping me a lot in understanding the camera. I just bought the E-M10-M3 and your video is helping me a lot to understand the features. Just to let you know, I could turn the camera on and off through wifi from my phone .. so the button works :) :)
Hi, I'm a beginner and will getting my first mirrorless camera..entry level of course. Should I be getting Olympus OM-D M10 Mark III or Fujifilm XT100 ? I'm torn between these two. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your thorough walkthrough of the camera! At 11:56 is exactly what I'm looking for! I wanted to know if there is sequential high in Silent AP mode. Silent mode is not fully configurable probably to not complete with E-M5 and E-M1. I hope I can live with Programmed aperture and shutter. I had hard time choosing between the Mk II and Mk III, but in the end, I choose 4K over fully configurable Silent drive mode.
At 14:30, there are a lot of focus point on the same object, however on my EM10 II there is always only one focus point being shown, may I ask what setting changes that?
Your criticisms of the E-M10 were probably somewhat deserved, but you miss the point, in my opinion. I've paired mine with a Zukio 14-150mm lens and the complete package is tiny and weighs almost nothing compared to similar cameras. As a hiker and amateur travel photographer, I don't think I could buy another package this easy-to-carry that performs this well. Sure, menu items may be awkward and hard to find, but frankly, after they're set, I don't really use most of them. The basic functions of this camera perform just fine. In fact, all things considered, they are flat amazing. Just my opinion. Thanks for the overview.
Why do things have to be so complicated?! Sony and Olympus needs to hire the people who made the GUI on the Samsung NX1. It's not like they are doing anything these days.
I've had my OMD- E-M10 Mk III for a couple of weeks. Still learning about it's functions and features and found your video very worthwhile. Thanks for taking the time to explain things to someone whose previous experience is with point & shoot.
I'm currently debating between this camera and the Panasonic GX85 as my first mirrorless. Do you have any thoughts on the relative strengths of the two? I see in this video you're not such a fan of the Oly, and you seem pretty enthusiastic in your GX85 review, but I'm wondering why you might pick the GX85 over the Oly in a direct comparison, if that would even be your choice. I've been using point and shoots for years, mostly for travel and hiking and always valued pocketability... thus, small and light w/EVF are key for me. Personally, they seem to be almost identical in features. I love the look of the Oly and it's live comp modes seem fun but I'm afraid of the paired down other features. No custom "myset" modes, button customization limited to the point of being nonexistent, very confused by inability to access drive mode in HDR, BRK, or exposure over 60"...can't use 2 sec self timer to eliminate shake from pushing shutter. I'd almost want to get the mark ii instead but the improved grip really does make a difference, and I feel the add-on grip of the mark ii adds too much bottom bulk. Also there's 4K..while video isn't important to me other than the intriguing idea of using 4K video to pull 8mp stills...still not sure if GX85's implementation is gimmick or value added and could I just do the same with 4K vids from the Oly. I love how customizable the GX85 is.
What are your primary photo/video needs? Although both are good cameras, in the end too many little things about the EM10-3 just got to me. My current favourite is the X-T2 (with the battery grip) but my primary use is video.
Thank you so much for responding so quickly! I shoot photos almost exclusively. And I value something light and compact that won't bog me down on a hike or trek. I like shooting landscapes and moving water as well as architecture, graffiti, and some street photography when traveling (which I do often). As a physicist and astronomer by training, I am interested in playing with astrophotography and long exposure now that I'm buying a more capable camera. The compactness is what's drawn me toward m43. That, combined with the price of Fuji lenses has ruled Fuji out despite the IQ. With regards purely photographic considerations, are there any particular quibbles or gems you think I should look at more closely in either the GX85 or the em10 iii?
All of these cameras should be suitable, and any camera that has a bulb mode will be able to take long exposure night sky shots (not my area of expertise). However, the E-M10-3's live time and live composite features make it easier to see what you're getting as you take the photo.
Thankyou, this must be the first review I've ever seen (no matter the product) that covers a product thoroughly, biased and straight forward. no bs. Keep up the good work sir.
Amazing video! I’m looking for an inexpensive vacation camera for a newbie. Doing photo and video. My phone wasn’t cutting it. Between the em10 markiii and GX85 which would you recommend? Are there any others I should be considering in the $400-$500 range? I plan on doing some, but very little, post editing.
Very nice review of the camera , you really explained very well all the aspects and I go to buy it without second thought. Subscribed !!! And the most important think is to capture moments in our life until our SD card is out of space.... as you mentioned correctly
Every day I spend here on your channel to learn more. I love photography and videos. I really like Olympus and I am researching an OM-D E-M10 Mark III for purchase. I currently own PEN E-PL9 and I love this camera. Taking the opportunity I would like to ask. How do you mirror the camera to make your videos? I also make video but I don't know how to mirror the screens to facilitate the demonstration. Thanks!
It's nice to know that my work is appreciated and that viewers find it useful. Thanks for taking the time to write. I record the screen using a external recorder from the HDMI output. More details here: ua-cam.com/video/1TIcruFD5Ho/v-deo.html
Keystone compensation sold me on the camera, back in the day I carried shift lenses which were a bit of a pain to use, and almost always required a tripod. If you can get the camera used or refurbished I dont see how one can go wrong. I purchased mine used in mint condition including box, and everything that comes with it for half the price of a new one.
Thanks for the insightful review! For a photograph usage, do you think is better the mark II or III? (Both still worth in 2020?) Is it true that the mark II has a better manual mode (more options)? Sorry for the amount of questions
I didn't compare the two side by side. Either a camera can manually set the aperture, shutter duration and ISO - the three exposure variables - or it cannot. There are no more options for manual exposure. Ask as many questions as you need.
Thank you for the in-depth and no-BS review. This camera is at the top of my - still not concrete - list. I bought a Canon 350d in 2006 and an Olympus Pen ep3 in 2013 because the Canon didn’t have video. I want to improve my technical skills without spending any more than this costs in 2020 and without adding weight of DSLR cameras. I don’t care for vlogging, but I do wish I could print larger than a 16mp can produce. Would you still suggest this as an ideal camera for me? The IBIS is a huge plus.
Great video! I'm deciding between the M10 Mark III or the Sony A6300, which one would you pick? I'm looking for a good, easy to use all around camera when I travel. I own a Canon DSLR but I tend not to bring it traveling because of it's size.
Although there's lots to like with the M10 M3, I'd probably go with the A6300 - unless you're planning on shooting a lot of video. The M3's amazing stabilization and the Sony's overheating would swing me back to the M3, ins spite of its issues.
Thanks for your great reviews! I’m in doubt between canon m50 and the Olympus m10, using the camera for nature shots and sports photography (dressage horses). Or should I wait for the m10 mark4? Used my late fathers fijifilm coolpix 6000 till now, but this is broken now. Thank you
It's a difficult choice. The selection of m-mount lenses is very limited compared to M43, but if you have older EOS lenses and an adapter, you might be all set. The larger sensor on the Canon might make a slightly higher quality image. If you have experience with either brand, you might prefer its menu system. In the end, the differences are small, you can choose with your wallet, your hand (which fits better) your sense of design and brand preference. Did you look at the Fujifilm X-T30 (or X- T20)? ua-cam.com/video/AW2sDwqnUyo/v-deo.html
Hi Maarten. I'm planning to acquire this camera and currently doing my research. My question is, does this camera support synchronized stabilization with a stabilized lens? Also, do universal camera remote will work with it?
My biggest take-away: You can turn off the annoying pop-up tips in the menu with the Info button, omg!!!!!! 😆 I have just an Olympus TG-6, and I tried it, and viola! I'm so much happier 😃
So -- Need the price range of under $650 US -- will this be a good solution or is there another mirrorless that would be better -- I really want to have a viewfinder for the camera. Thanks for the consideration.
Hello Maarten, Thank you for a great review. I have a question .. Is it possible to get a clean HDMI output without the focus box in AF 1080p as I am wanting to use it as a live stream source? Regards Don.
The cost, size, weight and image quality make this camera a great value. I have the Mk 2 and it's my go to camera. I'm not a pro and I don't shoot video so there's no shortcomings for me.
Hey Maarten, thank you for the detailed review. I am a novice photographer looking to buy first camera outside point and shoot cameras. I have never owned a DSLR before. In your opinion, which camera would be a better choice for me - Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III or Canon EOS M50 or would you recommend something else? I was considering going for Nikon D5600, but thinking maybe mirror-less is the way to go forward. Any input would be helpful. Thank you!
All three are good choices, depending on your specific needs. If you are shooting mainly stills, the Nikon may be the more flexible choice with the best selection of lenses. For video I’d prefer the Olympus with its superior stabilization. Mirrorless has lots of advantages, particularly for video, but may not be for everyone. Until Canon increases the m-mount lens selection, it’s hard to recommend the M50, which is otherwise a solid and light choice.
Hello and thank you for your super detailed reviews! I hesitate between this Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III and the Olympus E-PL9 to film my travels in 4k. My preference would rather go to the E-PL9 for its better compactness. The quality of the 4k videos and the battery life of the two devices are equivalent it seems to me (despite the only 3 axis-stabilization of the PL9). What do you think, what is the best choice? Thanks in advance.
One thing you didn't mention, or perhaps it wasn't an issue with your example, is that the kit PZ lens tends to be very soft at the sides. Often examples are softer one side than the other, which makes me wonder about the quality control they find acceptable. The menu system has been a mess for a long time and while they have altered it somewhat on this model, it doesn't seem to be as improved as it could have been or should be
It's hard to complain about lenses when I'm reviewing the camera. However, I do leave it to my viewers to draw their own conclusions - and to check other reviews, like dpreview who do more in-depth quality and lens analysis. That said, there are few kit lenses I've ever liked.
The way I look at it is that this camera is mostly sold with that lens and you have mentioned it and the picture quality of the camera taken through it. So I think its only fair to warn that the images will often be soft to the sides. That doesn't stop me using it, but I must say that I prefer the Panasonic 12-32 manual zoom, apart from the lack of manual focus control on that lens Have a happy Christmas and New Year, and thank you for your reviews, which I and many others enjoy very much.
Thanks for showing limits of e-m10 iii. Your video and few other tests convinced me to buy this one instead of Sony a6300 which I already ordered. I know a6300 has a bit better image quality, and video is much better (d-logs etc), but I just found a6300 will be unusable for my shaky hands without gimbal, especially with it's rolling shutter. Olympus gives me the possibility to make stable videos from hand. I'm an amateur, just need it for trips, not commercial or semi-professional youtube videos, so I feel it was built for me:) Thanks for great review.
Hi, I noticed the mark 3 do not have mysets like the previous version. Is there any way to save the settings and switch them? Also, does the individual mode dials retain its own settings like picture profile, wb, highlight & shadow curves, etc?
Hello Maarten, thank you for you thorough review. Does the kit include a battery charger? I was considering buying one separately until I saw your wonderful review.
I think that depends on the specific kit, but according to Olympus, the battery charger is included. Check with your dealer, or with Olympus in your region.
I can't decide between Canon 200d and olympus m10 mark iii, i will be doing street photography, portraits and outdoor photography, sometimes videos but mainly photography. I will be sticking to the kit lens for a while, both cameras are very similar in price where i live. Which one should i buy? i know all of their features but can't decide which one fits me.
@@MaartenHeilbron That's what bothers me actually, I like both of them and they have very little advantages over each other. I guess I will go with the Olympus though.
Hi Maarten! Which one do you prefer? This one or the Panasonic GX85? Or can you recommend other mirrorless camera with the same price range? I've been looking for a lot and can't decide yet. I would mainly use this when travelling.
There's certainly a lot to choose from in this category, and it's hard to recommend one for you without knowing your preferences and intentions. I would choose the GX85, but for purely personal reasons. Does this help - ua-cam.com/video/9WiJQF0JXIE/v-deo.html
Thank you! I will definitely check that link. I am a beginner and would like to buy a camera that I would mainly use for travelling. Thus, I would like a camera that is not hard to navigate.
Thanks for the video. It was very informative. I couldn't decide if I choose OM-D E-M10 Mark III or Fuji xt-20. I am just a starter and I will mainly use the camera for taking photos. I would appreciate if you could share your opinion.
Many thanks for a very nice review. I know it is a difficult one (comparing oranges and apples), but would it be a step up or down if I were to upgrade my old Canon Rebel 1 with this camera?
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you for sharing your opinion - it is very important to me! I need to upgrade my 'old' camera anyway, the black paint from the metal frame that holds the mirror is getting off the surface and constantly gets on the mirror and the matrix which is annoying. I guess it has something to do with the lack of weather-sealing of that body. I realise that Olympus EM10 III is not weather sealed either. My Olympus choice was mainly driven by the size and relatively low cost lenses. I can get it with three lenses (pancake 14-45mm, 45-150mm and 45mm f1.8) for £550. Do you think Sony A6400 or A6100 would be a better choice. It is twice as expensive (at least here in the UK) as the Olympus model reviewed here, but its autofocusing system is so tempting.
@@ivank8422 It doesn't sound like that kind of wear and tear is weather related - unless you know you've been shooting a lot under very adverse conditions in a careless way. There are many more e-mount lenses (not just from Sony by the way) than M 4/3. The A6100 is a better choice.
@@MaartenHeilbron Surprisingly, I didn't use my Canon DSLR camera a lot. But I have taken it to some hot and humid (e.g. Canary Islands, South of Spain) and relatively cold places in Germany with temperatures down to minus 10 degC. With regards to Sony, I know my question might be strange but does the exceptional eye- and face-tracking ability by Sony cameras directly correlate to the picture sharpness? Is it really a game changer in photography or another marketing tool?
@@ivank8422 It is more than marketing. Paired with a G-Master lens that has the focus button, it's a game changer. Even with just he shutter or back button focus, it's a major improvement. I think that any camera should be able to handle those situations.
I agree the menu could be much more simple, but I love the camera for me who has photography as hobby only and want a always bring me camera. Small but not too small.
As someone wanting to taste a bit of photography, I'm wholy unsure about which camera to pick. This one is more attractive to me, mostly aesthetically, because it has the retro look, especially the silver version. The lumix G7 from panasonic on the other hand seems to have far more buttons and fun settings, just like this camera, though from what I can tell in less settings. Sadly, no retro style. What would be your opinion on this matter? Are aesthetics more worth it or the handling of the buttons and menus? I don't want to spend too much on a camera, in case it doesn't quite fit with me.
Aesthetics are important - you have to love your camera, and take it out proudly. If the look isn't pleasing, you won't be a satisfied user. Have a look at some Fujifilm models like the X-T30 ua-cam.com/video/AW2sDwqnUyo/v-deo.html they combine retro design with excellent physical controls. And the larger sensor will take better photos.
@@MaartenHeilbron I've had my eye on the fujifilm camera's as they were recommended by a family member. However, the fact they are priced higher (a bit too high for me as just wanting to taste photography) is a bit of a hurdle for me. Call it a fear for just in case that photography is not as interesting to me as I expect it to be. Thanks anyway for the recommendation. I'll keep it in mind.
@@gamewolf375 While I appreciate financial constraints, if you want to enjoy the experience, you may want to consider your options. Try, for example, a used X-T20 (also a fine camera, if slightly slower focus).
@@MaartenHeilbron I'll definitely keep that in mind. I'm not the biggest fan of using a used device as it's always a bit of a gamble, but I have the luck of having a colleague willing to lend me one of his camera's. That might give me a taste and maybe up my budget if necessary. Thank you for the recommendations! I'll definitely take them to heart.
Hey there, Maarten. I just wanted to give a bit of a follow up on this story. I've bought myself a camera and while it doesn't have interchangeable lenses or a retro styling, it does what I wanted it to do, being allround photography. As a stranger to the world of photography, I didn't know what style of photography I would like or dislike. If I wanted a retro camera, with the low low budget I had, I would limit myself to a single style, or at least lose a few styles along the way and not get to try them out until I got a new lens. My colleague suggested me the sony DSC-HX400V, which has a fixed lens of 24mm-1200mm. This means that I can do nature photography and close ups, whilst also playing around with for example street photography. The lower price which with accessories and all fell in my budget. Now, I can try everything out, learn the very basics and then make a choice for a retro camera in maybe a few years if and when I'm fully accustomed to photography and know what specifics I need and want. I've never seen a review on it on your channel and I personally would recommend it to the people like me, who are very indecisive, not sure about the specifics and want to try everything out without committing to a higher budget. I still wanted to thank you for the recommendations, which I will keep close, once I'm fully ready to buy a camera on a higher budget.
I'm not sure what underwater split photography is, but the camera can be set to manual focus and then adjusted to infinity. Whether that will work in a housing, I don't know.
Thank you for the quality review, though I can not decide if this is the right camera. I like the stabilization, an hope for quality low light and indoor photography. All automatic or manual option seem good enough, maybe with too many options to learn to learning curve may be too long. I would also like to be able to take decent action photos indoors, this is the one test I did not find, in your review, maybe I missed it. Would you recommend any other cameras that meets my requirements? I would like it to be a smaller camera like this, so it's good for travel.
In general, it's difficult to find a camera that can deliver action photos in a low light indoor setting. The best solution is usually a fast lens. Some of Sony's full frame models would deliver better low light performance, they are slightly larger.
awesome camera and very fun to use; I've tried other so called better but are not fun to use or are too heavy and bulky; this one with 25mm 1.8 lens (50 view) is fantastic all around camera. And my files are not huge which is great.
I think, in view of the larger selection of native lenses available for micro four thirds, you'd be better off with this one. The menu system is slightly quirky, but as a beginner, that shouldn't be an issue.
Which camera with the same budget (about 500) with various lens option would you recommend for mainly photos of the dog (both portraits as action shots)? :)
@@MaartenHeilbron nothing and I love that retro look. Just wondered if its ok at taking action shots. Used to own a D7100 but sold it, want something more convenient and easier to carry with me
Hi, Sir. I am confused. I like and want to buy a Fujifilm XT 100, but in my country, the Olympus OMDE M10 III is being discounted and the two cameras are about the same price. So, which one should I buy? greetings from Indonesia 🙏😀🙏
Hello. Very good and detailed review. I felt myself on a test drive with this camera. I have a question. I'm not so interested about videography. I focus on street photography but I will also take landscape photos too (not as much as street photos) I was planning to buy DSLR Canon EOS rebel sl 3 (aka 250d) but also this camera could be good. What do you think, I really like to hear your opinion. Thank you
I'd take the X-T20, but the Mark III does have amazing stabilization, so if you're shooting video, or taking long exposures, that might be better for you.
Hey Maarten & everyone! A novice photographer, getting my 1st "proper" camera but a little tight on the budget. Should i opt for the dated Mark II, or an EPL9/8, or are the new features and timeproofing of Mark III worth pinching myself just slightly more? (or should I try something else altogether haha) Appreciate your honest thoughts :)
In my opinion, for a novice, any recent model camera - like the ones you've suggested - are good choices. They will provide high quality images, and have the controls needed to exercise your creativity. While newer models may have a slightly higher ISO, a slightly faster focus, or a faster burst - these are not materially significant to novices.
Great review and great info in the comments section. I plan to use for shooting music videos and covers. Studio audio overlayed with performance and b roll. Question: is the autofocus or focus settings reliable enough for this? Sometimes I will use a tripod and film in selfie mode..sometimes will have someone to film. I’ve posted a few already on my channel. Thanks!
Thanks for information 👍🙂 I will buy a camera in a few days but i can not decide i should buy sony a6000 or that camera 🤔 what can you advice me? Thanks
thanks for putting time making this review but considering this is an entry level cameras it offers a lot....and if you miss all other features on this camera body it means you should look for a em-5 or em-1
Thank you.
What a delight to read your kind words, thanks very much for taking the time to comment.
This is how a review should be done, good form sir.
Thanks for your kind words, appreciated.
Your reviews are very thorough. I just bought this camera because OLYMPUS has the best IBIS and macro lens. 60 mm f2.8 is amazing.
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.
Sunkist.
one of a select few, elite camera reviewers on UA-cam! thanks for sharing your camera review on the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III!
Thanks for that! A pleasure to read your kind words.
@@MaartenHeilbron is that a good backup camera? Just got one with a 14-42 lens for 450 dollars. Is that a good deal? I use the fun xt30 as my primary camera but wanted to try Olympus for fun as wanted a backup camera body and the 4K capability is nice,m
@@RodolphosTechchannel What are you backing up? Your car? That's a good deal only if it's a camera you want.
That is very kind of you - it's always nice to know that my videos are useful and appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
That was very kind of you - thanks for taking the time to comment.
I appreciate the kind words, thanks. It's always great to know I've provided useful and helpful content.
This is my kind of video, appreciate the super clear zoom-ins to highlight the camera build and features (ngl it looks bigger than it really is). I like your usability focus and as a usability researcher myself I think I'm in for finding lots of problems with the experience of this camera!
Thanks for your kind words. I do try to make usability the focus of my reviews - you don't need one more review of the specs you can find anywhere.
Best review I have seen on UA-cam! The information is organized, extremely detailed, and still very succinct! Your voice gives me a kind of “Rick Steves” vibe, which is a wonderful compliment because I love his voice and grew up watching his travel shows. Thank you!
What a pleasure to read your kind words, I'm also a Steves fan, so appreciate the comparison.
Thanks for the kind words, and your insightful comments.
A very thorough review. I've been thinking about who this camera is for and my sense is that it is someone stepping up from a good smartphone.
I appreciate your kind words, thanks for commenting.
Thanks for the info. My wife bought one OM-D E M 10 III couple days ago.
Lucky you. I always appreciate the kind words of my viewers.
@@MaartenHeilbron Subscribed. Have a good one.
Thanks for the subscription, also appreciated.
Thanks for the kind words, always nice to know I've provided useful videos. And thanks for your thoughts, appreciated.
Always nice to know that viewers appreciate my videos, thanks for commenting.
Thanks for this VERY comprehensive review. It's now 2020 and I'm considering buying one because the price has fallen pretty low. Thanks for the honest opinion.

Maarten Heilbron did you buy one? There is an offer on the olympus website right now.
@@brendangray No, I did not find it that appealing.

A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
I did find more gotchas than most cameras, but as you point out, image quality is very good.
I didn't mean you Maarten. I meant the comments below. Sorry!
Thanks for your clarification.
Thank you for the review!! I'm going to buy this camera for my first ever camera. I'm hoping you have a great day!!!
Thanks, you too! A pleasure to read your kind words.
Hello, which one have better stabilizer, low light quality, auto focus and battery life, this one or lumix g85 ? Thank you
This one.
I didn't have them side by side - I would judge the speed as roughly similar and the area selection tools as better on the GX85.
Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you! Always nice to hear from viewers who are happy with their new camera and my videos!
I'm also thinking of buying GX80
I'm checking you review of that camera (here: ua-cam.com/video/4MQPyLE_7ys/v-deo.html) - but would still appreciate your input. DMC-GX80 or EM 10 mark 3, if my biggest intention is to film?
Again thanks for great content and sorry for my long comments.
What specific feature or function is missing on the phone that you're hoping the camera will do for you?
I would suggest that the GX80 is the better choice.

I appreciate the kind words. Please DM when you're coming to TO and let's get together for a coffee.
Thanks for commenting - hope you can settle on your cxchoice before your next trip
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. It's always nice to hear from a photographer who's found the camera that suits his or her needs.

Does it have the high res function from the EM5 mk II?
It does not.
Excellent review! As a beginner who will be purchasing his first mirrorless camera, would you recommend the GX85 or E-M10 Mark III? I am looking for a travel camera and will be using it for both photos and videos. Small form factor is important and would probably bring along a maximum of 1 lens.
Both are tempting, but the Olympus has considerably better stabilization if your'e shooting video.
***spoiler alert*** thanks for sharing your thoughts.

your review is really great. It is helping me a lot in understanding the camera. I just bought the E-M10-M3 and your video is helping me a lot to understand the features. Just to let you know, I could turn the camera on and off through wifi from my phone .. so the button works :) :)
Thanks for the kind words and the information, good to know. Wonder what I did wrong?
Hi, I'm a beginner and will getting my first mirrorless camera..entry level of course. Should I be getting Olympus OM-D M10 Mark III or Fujifilm XT100 ? I'm torn between these two. Thank you.
I have the feeling that the X-T100 is better suited for beginners. ua-cam.com/video/H2RJYD3brb4/v-deo.html
Always nice to know I've provided the information you needed, thanks for commenting.
At 14:30, there are a lot of focus point on the same object, however on my EM10 II there is always only one focus point being shown, may I ask what setting changes that?
At 4:26, select the largest focus area.
Hatchet job? I thought it was quirky, but other than somewhat overzealous marketing, I rather liked the camera. Thanks for the kind words.
Yeah. I was overzealous. Good video. Sorry. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words.
I shoot JPEG only, how are the JPEG´s on this camera compared to the Panasonic GX85?
Thank you.
That kind of question is best answered at dpreview, who provide more detailed comparisons than I can.
I like them both which one should i buy Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III or sony a6500
Here are my tips to help you choose a camera: ua-cam.com/video/9WiJQF0JXIE/v-deo.html
Why do things have to be so complicated?! Sony and Olympus needs to hire the people who made the GUI on the Samsung NX1. It's not like they are doing anything these days.
hehe. I wish I'd had the opportunity to review the NX1 - it certainly has, or had, a lot of supporters.
I've had my OMD- E-M10 Mk III for a couple of weeks. Still learning about it's functions and features and found your video very worthwhile. Thanks for taking the time to explain things to someone whose previous experience is with point & shoot.
Always nice to hear that my videos are useful and appreciated, thanks!
A very enjoyable and informative review. Thankyou.
My pleasure! Thanks for your kind words.
i love your videos because you explain nicely
Thank you so much 😀 Nice to know my work is appreciated.
Thanks, I do appreciate your kind words.
Sounds like you've made a good choice - if you're stuck between those two, take the one that feels more comfortable in your hand.
Very nice review of the camera , you really explained very well all the aspects and I go to buy it without second thought. Subscribed !!! And the most important think is to capture moments in our life until our SD card is out of space.... as you mentioned correctly

very useful. I didn't find those information in the manual.

Interesting review Maarten so which one will you choose between the Mark II and this one? (For photography purposes)
Thanks for your kind words. I didn't get the chance to review the Mark II, so can't really say.
What a pity! It would be great you can compare both. Hopefully someday in 2018?
This will depend on what Olympus Canada has available for loan.
Thanks!

Glad to hear your bargain hunting paid off, and that you'e enjoying your camera.
I don't know about ideal, but if you're familiar with the quirks of Olympus, and you must have stabilization, this would work.
Is this camera worth it for starting out and staying with I and changing the lenses the way down
Maybe. How far down do you intend to go? Which other cameras are you considering?
Again you help a lot with this video👌. Lets hope you will continue doing this for a long and healthy time 🙏
That's very kind, thanks for commenting.

I'm not sure what you mean by synchronized stabilization. I found the stabilization above average. I did not try any remotes, so no idea.
Thanks for a lot of good tips, for my new camera, good rewiew!
Glad it was helpful! Always nice to hear from a viewer who found what they were looking for.
My biggest take-away: You can turn off the annoying pop-up tips in the menu with the Info button, omg!!!!!! 😆 I have just an Olympus TG-6, and I tried it, and viola! I'm so much happier 😃
Always nice to know I've resolved the little annoyances, thanks for commenting.
So -- Need the price range of under $650 US -- will this be a good solution or is there another mirrorless that would be better -- I really want to have a viewfinder for the camera. Thanks for the consideration.
Sorry, I don't really track prices of gear. The A6000 comes to mind as a great bargain at about that price.
Hello Maarten,
Thank you for a great review. I have a question .. Is it possible to get a clean HDMI output without the focus box in AF 1080p as I am wanting to use it as a live stream source? Regards Don.
I longer have the camera to confirm, but I believe that is possible.
Good honest review. I embedded your video on a overview blog post of this camera.
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated.
@Maarten Heilbron No problem. Keep up the good work.
The cost, size, weight and image quality make this camera a great value. I have the Mk 2 and it's my go to camera. I'm not a pro and I don't shoot video so there's no shortcomings for me.
Perfect! Thanks for your note.
Greetings. I would like to ask if this camera is completely made of plastic, or are there any metal parts on it? Well thank you.
I don't have that information.
They're pretty equivalent in most material ways, other than weight. Take the E-PL9.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you for your quick reply ! :-)
Good review !! What would be your camera for 2017 ?
Thanks for your kind words, appreciated. I did not find a camera in 2017 that I would prefer over the Fuji X-T2 from 2016.
Maarten Heilbron I am sure ! I have an old D90 Nikon. Looking to move to XT2 or Olympus OM E M5 II
great review... thinking about buying this camera for its video features... it has the same 29 minute video record limit in 1080?
Yup, there are very few stills cameras that support video that aren't similarly limited.
That doesn't stop me using it, but I must say that I prefer the Panasonic 12-32 manual zoom, apart from the lack of manual focus control on that lens
Have a happy Christmas and New Year, and thank you for your reviews, which I and many others enjoy very much.
Thanks for adding those thoughts and your kind wishes. Seasons Greetings to you and your family.
Always nice to hear from viewers who appreciate my content and find it useful. Thanks for commenting.
Hi! I'm wondering which one would you recommend to shoot in low light and for occasional vlogging, Canon m50 or Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III? Thanks!
Either could be a good choice, the Canon is probably slightly better in low light, but that could also be lens dependent.
Hi, I noticed the mark 3 do not have mysets like the previous version. Is there any way to save the settings and switch them? Also, does the individual mode dials retain its own settings like picture profile, wb, highlight & shadow curves, etc?
I'm sorry I don't have the answers to your questions. That was a while ago and I no longer have an M3 to check.
What is the camera strap you’re using? It looks ideal!
It came in the kit with the camera.
Top review !!! Which camera would you recommend- Fujifilm X-A5 or this one :) ?
The X-S10.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you very much 🙂
Hello Maarten, thank you for you thorough review. Does the kit include a battery charger? I was considering buying one separately until I saw your wonderful review.
I think that depends on the specific kit, but according to Olympus, the battery charger is included. Check with your dealer, or with Olympus in your region.
Sir would you recommend this camera in 2022 for streetphotography ? Need your advise
I wouldn't. Consider the Fujifilm X-S10 or one of the previous X-Txx models.
It sounds to me as if either would be suitable.
These days even the most high-end pro cameras will have settings that provide a fully automated (focus and exposure) mode with a minimum of fuss.
Thanks for the video. It was very informative. I couldn't decide if I choose OM-D E-M10 Mark III or Fuji xt-20. I am just a starter and I will mainly use the camera for taking photos. I would appreciate if you could share your opinion.
Honestly, for a novice either is fine. The Fujifilm cameras have larger sensors which offer some advantages.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you sir
Many thanks for a very nice review. I know it is a difficult one (comparing oranges and apples), but would it be a step up or down if I were to upgrade my old Canon Rebel 1 with this camera?
Down in my opinion. Maybe you just want a better lens?
Glad to hear you've found a camera that pleases you.
@@MaartenHeilbron Merry Christmas and happy new year, hope your family stay safe
Is it possible to make infinity focus in this camera for underwater split photography by using a housing.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you!
Always happy to help.
awesome camera and very fun to use; I've tried other so called better but are not fun to use or are too heavy and bulky; this one with 25mm 1.8 lens (50 view) is fantastic all around camera. And my files are not huge which is great.
Always nice to hear from a viewer who has found camera that is pleasing and satisfying.
Fantastic review!!
That's very kind, thank you!
Hi Marteen, great video. Considering a beginner who is starting a hobby, which one would be a better choice..this or the Canon M50
I think, in view of the larger selection of native lenses available for micro four thirds, you'd be better off with this one. The menu system is slightly quirky, but as a beginner, that shouldn't be an issue.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank's you are the best.
@@mauriciolisboa5229 always happy to help
Which camera with the same budget (about 500) with various lens option would you recommend for mainly photos of the dog (both portraits as action shots)? :)
What was the matter with this one? Maybe one with an animal face detect mode like the Sony A6100? ua-cam.com/video/799f0nlD3-I/v-deo.html
While I agree that price is an important consideration, if they're the same, purchase the camera you prefer.
Thank you
I'd prefer the Canon because of the larger sensor, but, with the right lens, this could also be a good choice.
Do you think these are the recommended settings I'm just curious
Which settings? For what purpose?
Hello..i want your opinion..between this one and xt20 which one better ?
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you!
Thanks!
Thanks for your kind words. Honestly, you'd be better with manual focus on this camera. The AF in video mode isn't very reliable.
Thanks! Thats a huge help
Thanks for information 👍🙂 I will buy a camera in a few days but i can not decide i should buy sony a6000 or that camera 🤔 what can you advice me? Thanks
I'd take the Sony A6000 - but a few pesos more will get you the A6100 - a substantially better camera.
