Couple of years back, found an EM10 Mii at a Pawn shop for a great price, works perfectly and became my EDC camera even though I have all the other formats. Then couple months back, found an EM10 MiiiS for even better price and now together they are my EDC cameras. Awesome feature set, small, light, great for travel, street or what every you need, love them.

I have the em10mk iii & I find it gives you a lot of features and good image quality for the price range. The grip is ok, along with the evf. I use it with the big sharp zoom lens, 14-150, esp. for travel photography

Is it ok this lens 14-150 for this body? Or it is too big and is it hard to use it?

Hi Gordon you can set the 'OK' button to enable super control panel for the AP setting. This lets you press OK whilst in silent mode to access the advanced settings. (it's in C1 in Control Settings in the menu options)

For fast action, I live by the ocean and do a lot of wave portraits. I turn on continuous focus and never had a blurred result. At first I thought I needed to do the successive shorts but it's blazing fast to focus and I know when the wave is breaking. It's so much fun.

@Gordon - on the 16 MP resolution - I agree with you though- the issue I have with the 16 MP sensor in this camera is the fact that it's this old sensor been around for a while. If they used a new 16 MP sensor with better DR/ISO/Color, I wouldn't mind. So it's the fact that it's a 16 MP sensor that's been around for a while the issue to me.

Beautiful retro design.Easily the prettiest mirrorless camera.Complete with fake pentaprism dome.
Reminds me of the old OM10 film camera I owned 30 years ago.
Mind you, he is holding the camera so close to the screen it looks bigger than it is.
It is a LOT smaller than it looks in this video.

    Gordon and Doug,
I'm concerned about the lack of Shutter Mode selectivity. On the Mk2 version we could choose between:
    • Mechanical Shutter
    • Anti-Shock Shutter
    • Electronic Shutter
modes, all of which have their appropriate uses.
As a professional photographer, I like the Mk3 as it is nicely customisable to behave like a modern-day OM-2. BUT, if I can't select Manual Shutter -- only offered a choice between Anti-Shock and Electronic Shutter modes, then this camera has a serious problem.
I've not been able to find any way to choose between the three shutter modes on the Mk3. Is this possible, please?
Many thanks for a great video review,
    Rick

      Oops! CORRECTION
      SELECTING SHUTTER MODES for Mk3
The Manual Shutter and Anti-Shock Shutter ◇ are accessed using the Super Menu *BUTTON*, which is what's located top left of the *camera body*.
Once in the Super Menu, you need to move the cursor over the box underneath the Auto Focus Area grid. The camera will now display the currently selected Shutter Mode, in words, at top left, above the Super Menu grid.
Clicking OK tells the camera you want to select one of its Mechanical Shutter modes. You're taken to a new screen, where the various Mechanical Shutter Mode options are displayed along the bottom of the screen. These are:
      Single, Single Anti-Shock ◇, Sequential High, Sequential Low, Sequential Low Anti-Shock ◇, followed by the timer options, 12s, 12s Anti-Shock ◇, 2s, 2s Anti-Shock ◇, 1-3-0.5s Custom, and finally 1-3-0.5s Anti-Shock ◇.
Use the cursor keys to select your required Mechanical Shutter mode, and press OK.
To access the Electronic Shutter options, you must be in Advanced Program or SCN mode.
      Rick

Note: in 2019, the Olympus software you can download using your serial # has panorama and focus stacking in the Tools menu. So the camera doesn't do it, but the supplied PC/Mac software will.

Honestly, if you want a camera for stills and can stomach the Olympus menus, the mark II is a far better camera, if only for the electronic shutter in all PASM modes. Not that the mark III is a bad camera, but it's one that will let you down at some point because most advanced features have been crippled while the mark II is a small E-M5-II missing only the WR and super resolution mode. For instance, the mark III can't use the L-Fn button on pro lens, can't pilot multiple flashes in TTL, won't let you use e-shutter in PASM, and a bunch of other features that have been removed. But it can do 4K which the mark II can not (but the II does 1080@60p, which isn't too shabby all things considered, for shooting a clip from time to time).
Slight nitpicking on this otherwise great and comprehensive review : the E-M10 doesn't C-AF in High speed burst mode (8 fps). It keeps the focus of the 1st frame of the burst. It only updates AF in Low speed burst mode (4 fps). To my knowledge, only the E-M1mkII can C-AF in High speed, but only with phase detection compatible lens (I may be wrong here).

I like your videos. Sometimes, I skip over them because they're so long, but you two do a good job of including information that cannot be gotten from specs. Other reviewers ramble on for 20 minutes and mostly just reiterate specs. I also like how you mention competing models and their pros and cons.
More input from Doug, please. His style and tastes are different than Gordon's which is good. It's one of the reasons this channel can get away with such long episodes.
Price Update: At the date of this posting, they're going for $420 w/kit lens, 16 GB card and Olympus bag refurbished on FeeBay.
30:35 Re. EVF magnification: Remember the Nikon F3HP? 0.9x? Why have we lowered our standards to the extent that 0.7x is "high-end"?
37:10 - Interesting question: Does the fact that this camera has an EVF contribute to Gordy's ability to hand-hold at 1/2 sec.?
43:05 - You've got one more subscriber. Don't let me down, bitch! ;-) Oh wait, you've already got 118k now. I can un-subscribe at any time...
46:35 - The Douger admits that he's got to sit back and listen to Gordy. ;-) He only got 5 minutes of talk out of nearly an hour. :-(
49:20 - Amen, brother. 16 MP is not a limitation unless you're a REALLY bad photographer, or your make big prints, or you're too cheap to buy a long enough lens for what you're photographing.
56:19 - The Douger breaks it down properly and concisely. Well-done! Personally, I don't have enough dough to just arbitrarily spend 40% more. This is big bux and it's gonna hafta do.
    - You guys plugged the HELL out of that book, but missed the opportunity to point out all of the EXCELLENT preset modes in this camera. NO ONE does ART mode like Olympus. Am I right?!

Hey Gordon, sorry if this question is so long!! But do you still recommend in the em10 mark iii, even though the camera is 2 years old? I'm just getting into photography, only ever had a smartphone and have decided I like the Olympus system and lenses. The em1 mk ii is way too expensive for me, and the em5 mk ii is somewhat tight money wise, but I know the em5 mk iii is coming out soon. I'd use it mostly for photography and maybe some home videos/travel videos. I might dabble in making amateur videos with friends for fun to post on UA-cam, but mainly would be used for photos. And I'd start doing jpegs only before I learn how to shoot raw later on down the road. I know the higher end olympus models have really frustrating menus. But do you think I should wait another couple months for them to announce the em5 iii or still go with this, even though it might be replaced by the mk iv in another year?

    • @cameralabs

If you want to do Macro photography, you cant beat Olympus and their 60mm f2.8 macro lens. It weighs only 183 grams and it is SUPER SHARP. Plus, with the Olympus camera body, you get 5 stops of stabilization while shooting handheld macro and you can do focus bracketing in the camera, then focus stacking in post production to get a great depth of field. The only other camera at this price point to compare is the G85, but the Panasonic macro lenses are inferior to the Olympus 60mm macro.

The EM10 always felt like a toy, buy the EM5ii, if you wait for the iii you may get 20mp but also a substantial price hike, and from what I can see the image quality on the EM1ii is only marginally better, and probably makes little difference in the real world

    • @chirag4
      @chirag4 7 років тому +1

thanks Zardos Spinosa, the Hump (for EVF) on top of EM10ii is plastic, while on EM5ii it is metal, says something about the build of entry level EM10 series compared to semi-pro EM5 series. When EM5iii comes, it will be laden with new features absent on EM10iii, but as of now, yes, EM5-II is a strong contender, and more practical, like you rightly pointed out. Fuji XE3 and XT20 are fantastic, but they lack IBIS, the main downside of Fuji, and are 1300$ each, twice than Em10iii @ 650$. Olympus are formidable cameras, under-rated, under-estimated, under-hyped, by APSC (Fuji & Sony) & Fullframe (DSLR) users. They deserve more attention than they get.

Chirag Parikh yep you are right there, Olympus gets very little mention these days, kinda over shadowed by the modern big names. That said the M4/3 sensor does have it's limitations and the competitors have pushed bigger and better so Olympus appears left behind. I do think the M4/3 sensor has hit a brick wall, and Olympus will need to come out with an entirely new and revolutionary sensor if it is going to keep up, which is why I am not buying the EM1ii. But as a travel camera which is my main genre, the EM5ii is blinkn fantastic and very compact kit, 9-18 for wide, 25 and 45 for portrait and then the 14-150 walk around. I do have the 40-150 Pro although a fine lens it's too bloody heavy so I am leaving it behind yet again, got a trip to Myanmar coming up in 2 weeks, prior I have made several trips to Cambodia, the photo opportunities are awesome, at the end of the day it's still about the capture and the experience behind it.

Hi Gordon and Dough! As always, a great review and a very appealing video to watch. You 2 make a wonderful team.
I bought this camera 2 weeks ago, and I have a big question.
The only way to shoot 4k is to go into the video mode with the dial and choose 4k?
I'd like to be able to be shooting photos in aperture/shutter priority or manual and still press the record button if there is something worth filming.
However, in these modes I only find 1080p options. I wouldn't like the dial to break from turning it all day each time I want to do a video.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 років тому +1

HI jan, glad you liked the video! Yes, the only way to access 4k is to turn the dial to the movie mode, then you press the button to the side of the power switch to access the options. I would also prefer to just set 4k from the menus so that pushing record would start video in whatever mode I wanted. i guess they are trying to hide it from users who may not want or need it, and also trying to make the menus simpler. But I will suggest to them anyway.

Hi Gordon, great review! I've got question regarding your video samples posted on cameralabs. Did you use external device for audio recording? I really love new EM10, I think it fits my needs (stop using smartphone while I'm travelling). My only doubts are about internal mic. Will it be sufficient for recording family events, sightseeing etc (nothing professional). On the other hand, even if I decide to get gx80 or dig deeper in my pocket and get em5.2, it's questionable if I force myself to carry around additional stuff like external mic just to make few videos during vacation. So my question is: did you use external recorder? If yes, is internal mic really bad? If no, in my opinion it does a really good job and my doubts are resolved. Thank you in advance for answer!

Eventually I bought em10 mkII + 14-42 pancake. I've got it for ~2/3 of the price of mkIII with the same lens and I think it was a great deal. I realised, that 4k, better UI, and some other improvements does not justify this price gap. In addition, for my needs, buying em5 was irrational also - I wouldn't use additional features anyway. I'm playing around for some time with this camera and I don't regret this decision. Mic is better than I thought it will be, image and video quality is great, after all, camera is limited by my skills:) I wouldn't change it for Panasonic - IMHO Oly looks better and it makes me happy (yes, it sounds crazy). There are some drawbacks: battery charger is huge and you can't power it up via usb (I knew that before buying, but still, it annoys as hell, lack of standardization offends me :) I've actually ordered smaller usb charger for this battery, few dollars, it should solve this issue. My next step: zuiko 45mm F/1.8, looking at the price, I'm glad, that I've saved some money getting older body.

I was actually considering purchasing the em10 mark III but now I've noticed the price drop on the Fuji xt-20 so the price difference between them is just a 100$ now ( the Fuji with the 16-50 mm lens) which is still on my budget range. what i liked about the em10 is the size ( although not that much of a difference to the fuji) and the price but now as they are close to each other I'm torn apart between the two. I know that they are both 2 different cameras but the price drop on the fuji made it quite alluring to me. I'm more into still photography with very little video usage so video capabilities are not the selling point for me , any helpful advice on this matter?? thanks in advance and i hope you continue these great reviews.

Sadly for Olympus, there is Canon M6 Mark 2 on 70$ less, with Dual Pixel focus in 4K and large sensor
I also think, that there are lot of tech witch is outside real life. 80% of in camera stabilisations are useless, and actually if you will watch video samples of Olympus on youtube, you will see very strange image micro lags.
I think, that there must be a difference between casual camera and semi pro. Casual is PEN 9/10 cameras, let them be nice tourist cameras. This one sounds like little bit more pro orientated, so why spend budgets on stabilisation if I will use stable stick. Even chineese electronic stable stick will do better job than any in camera.
So I yet do not understand price of this camera if it is absolutly equal to PEN camera and in some points even worse.
I think any camera nowadays must set priorities like:
    - Acceptable video autofocus like Canon, Sony or at least Fuji
    - 4k without overheat, to be able to make at least 1 hour of video. And instruction how fight overheat, for example, maybe turning off face detection will make it last longer
    - usb charge
I was almost buying this camera and than when I saw that Sensor is Micro, I "What?!" Same as PEN cost as normal Crop?
I understand that this camera is cons vs crop cameras, for example it writes 4K for infinitive time (2+ hours on one battery) without overheat, but thanks to it's small senson. But MBPS is from 50 to 90, not 100 or more.
So why it is better than Panasonic? Panasonic cost much less for more functionality, for example G85.
If you tell, that Olympus take better photos, and if you are targeting photos you can buy old Full Frame canon, it will be unbeatable in photos. But again difference between panasonic and olympus because there small sensor in photos are small, and not even comparable to bigger sensors for adequate reasons.
I think that best cameras on market are Fujifilm, but their video features below XT3 is horrible, only for small special clips.

I feel it's got too many limitations compared to m10 ii. The fact that the silent shutter is only available in program mode just about kills it for me. I have no idea who would want this camera - phones shoot 4k nowadays, so that's not gonna be enough of a draw.

Subscribed and liked! Hope you enjoy that coffee! REALLY hope you can help me decide between m10 iii and GX85 for my first interchangeable lens camera:
I love the look of the Oly but I'm afraid of the paired down features. No custom "myset" modes, button customization limited to the point of being nonexistent, very confused by inability to access drive mode in HDR, BRK, or exposure over 60"...can't use 2 sec self timer to eliminate shake from pushing shutter. I'd almost want to get the mark ii instead but the improved grip really does make a difference, and I feel the add-on grip of the mark ii adds too much bottom bulk. I love how customizable the GX85 is.
I've been using point and shoots for years, mostly for travel and hiking and always valued pocketability... thus, small and light w/EVF are key for me (hence entry-mid level m43).
Video isn't important to me other than the intriguing idea of using 4K video to pull 8mp stills...still not sure if GX85's implementation is gimmick or value added and could I just do the same with 4K vids from the Oly.

It's a really tough one to compare. I think the Fuji has the edge on quality, in terms of detail and lower noise at high ISOs, but the key selling point of the Olympus is the great image stabilisation that lets you keep to low ISOs so long as the subject's not moving...

    • @ordinosaurs
      @ordinosaurs 6 років тому +3

There's no tangible difference in IQ between µ4:3 and APS-C where it matters, because unlike the schematic you see everywhere, which stack the sensors in one corner to compare sizes, in real life, the comparison is when sensors are centered. Then, you'd see that most of the pixel "advantage" of APS-C over µ4:3 is in two narrow bands on the outside of the frame, left and right, and two "lines" top and bottom. But size for size, the pixel density of the 16Mpix imager of µ4:3 is about the same as any 24Mpix APS-C out there. The DR is about the same too, and the 5 axis ibis deals with the high iso situations (gain is easily 3 stops over the competitors). Add to the mix ridiculously light and short lens, and you get an almost pocketable system (body + 3 lens easily fits a man bag) that nothing can touch in convenience at that IQ point. This is the key. Even mirrorless APS-C systems still deal with massive glass, and there's nothing they can do about that because, you know, physics. Full frame is of course worse.
