I think the part in the village was the best part of the film. It shows that even though the world has basically ended several times, there's still something left to fight for. In 3.0 the world felt so destroyed to the point where I was wondering why they would still bother to fight for it. Thrice upon a time showed that if people take care of each other they CAN rebuild.

The village sequence was the heart of the whole film. The whole point of the movie - maybe the whole series - was Shinji's root connection with humanity, and the difference between him and his father's ability to be an individual within a world of differences. My only criticism would be that while things like Shinji's change in outlook or Gendo's epiphany or the time skip at the end are understandable and less about details than tone, they could use more breathing room. Basically, it felt like two films worth of ideas in one. The least memorable and least important parts of the movie, coincidentally, was the action.

Are you sure about that? I'm not convinced that's the case. If that was the goal, then it certainly gets lost in the noise of how ridiculously unplanned this movie franchise turned out to be. NGE and EOE are so well loved not just because of it's visual execution, but how well it argues it's thematic points. This movie, however, feels absolutely out of step with the previous three. Honestly all four feel like they're not even connected, thriving on what we already know if we saw NGE. And while I appreciate the supposed theme in practice, it's not supported by the material very well, if at all, and makes little impression. Ultimately it felt vapid and gratuitous, failing to do it's only job. To tell a meaningful story.
Well that's not true, it succeeded at it's other job, which was to make Khara buku bucks.

I think that if the whole movie was the village with some character drama, that would’ve been great. A whole movie of the last action stuff, with more solid character beats (less Gendo) and the lore more evenly spaced out would have been cool too. But the combo is a bit much, and both ends lose out because of it.

When it comes to Rei Q dying my interpretation was that shinji thought that everything bad that happened was a result of him piloting the Eva. For me, I personally loved how simple the answer to Gendo and Shinji's conflict was resolved. Throughout these films, Fuyutsuki and Rei are both trying to get Shinji and Gendo to talk to one another, but both of them constantly run away from it through one means or another. Gendo ran away from Shinji because he was scared of him, because he couldn't handle Yui's death, and so he would rather waste 20 years of his life trying to become God and rewriting the world than simply face his problems. I believe even the last film itself acknowledges this with Fuyutsuki saying "you'll have to play Ikaris game a little longer" as well as all this complicated stuff that all ends with neither Shinji or Gendo being able to beat one another in a big fight or something, instead they have to do the one thing they have avoided this WHOLE time, the one thing Yui would have wanted them to do, talk to one another, express their feelings and their hurt to one another, and to me in a series full of so many complex ideas and world-shaping character choices and these God-like mechs and what have you, it truly is so poetic how simple the answer to all of the conflict was, it was the obvious one all along. It also ties with the theme of not running away from your problems, and Gendo represents the absolute ultimate negative of running away from reality. Imagine being so scared of our reality that you try to change by becoming God lol. That's why i personally found the Gendo part not only well done but the most important centerpiece of this whole series, and perhaps the franchise as a whole as it sort of takes the macro ideas the series always has and simplifies it to it's core. It's the thesis statement of the whole franhcise. So I'd say that's pretty good and something I feel like everyone is overlooking for whatever reason. Anyway I respect your feelings on the film Eva monkey, I've quietly watched your stuff for a very long time and I do want to thank you for always being a positive voice in this fandom in general. Looking forward to the future of Eva whatever form that takes lol.

    • @AllThingsCubey
      @AllThingsCubey 3 роки тому +12

But that's been a fault of Rebuilds overall. Their conflict isn't supposed to be resolved, at least not directly. The point of the originals was to learn to love yourself and not expect or rely on others to provide your validation. Gendo is unforgivable, and Shinji stops trying to get his love, instead separating himself from his father and eventually learning to love and accept himself, even sofar as to leave his mother's love in Instrumentality.
Focussing on Shinji trying to resolve his conflict with Gendo by making Gendo love him (and then only because he sees Yui through his son) is pathetic, contradictory to the originals, weak, and frankly bullshit, because Gendo deserves nothing.

    • @potatohead7579
      @potatohead7579 3 роки тому +17

@@AllThingsCubey I may not be very qualified to talk about this, but i don't think gendo and shinji reuniting is about them loving each other, or seeking validation from one another
Hell it started with them beating each other up lol
But instead it's more about facing your problems head on instead of running away from them, which is a big thing in nge
Shinji ran away from his father because he abandoned him for years and gendo ran away from shinji because, like op said, he was scared of him
So here they understand one another, and while they still don't love each other, they at least understand their existence instead of running away from it, which in my opinion is anything but contradictory to the original series

I think the village sequence was important because Shinji was dealing with the idea that his existence only brought bad things to the world. A counter theory that someone else wrote up on the sub: the "ending" is Shinji and Mari returning from the anti-universe to their universe, there is no timeskip persay, the characters just lost their curse of the Eva, hence looking older and why Shinji had the collar on whilst in the anti-universe. The station is seemingly the same one where Gendou hugged Shinji. The "goodbye all Evas" reverts the world to a pre-3.0 and some of the damage done by the 2nd impact, so the return of the lifeforms/humans lost. This isnt perfect nor totally airtight, but the theory is more thematically solid than just a very meta "our world".

      @chillax319 3 роки тому +9

Yup. It's not a time skip, he just appears after the beach while sitting on a bench with universe molded "as it should be". Only question that is not answered is "who and how much they remember if anything from before the new universe". At least him and Mari seem to have some recall of what happened, with how she took of the choker from Shinjis neck and it would not make sense for a clear timeskip for him to wear it for so long. But I suppose they "lived through" some time and that's why they acted so familiar with each other and at that time reality fully realized.
TL:DR: Time continuum reality feckery was done on top of getting memories of the times that they "lost/have no way to create back then together" thanks to all that Eva buisness.

And the meta jumped the shark here, too. It was really such a badly written, badly made in parts too, film. The only possible explanation for the wave of popularity its seeing with fans is that they are not thinking. They went into it determined that after the long wait, it would be perfect, and final, and they'd leave happy and with closure for their favourite franchise. With minds that set up, and the wish fulfilled by the ending, nobody's actually thinking properly about whether it was a good film, or even actually a good ending. But on the other hand the whole village sequence basically implied that the third impact in 2.0 and forth impact in 3.0 are meaningless, yeah sure lore-wise you could say billions of human died, but from a plot perspective all the major characters are pretty much unaffected (except for Kaji)
That's the difference between EOE and 3.0+1.0:
In EOE all the major characters are killed/orange-juicified one by one because Shinji's unwillingness of accepting responsibility
While in 3.0+1.0 the movie basically tells you all what Shinji did in 2.0 and 3.0 have no actual consequences, all his friends are still alive albeit a little bit older and they even now living in an agrarian utopia!

I certainly prefer EOE, but I enjoyed this film's positive take on human resiliency in the face of cataclysmic events and I feel like the village sequence does make Shinji's determination to get back in the robot more believable as it shows him that there is still hope for humanity and things worth living for. Not saying that the film is without fault, just explaining my perspective.

Yeah it alone could have carried the film, but they decided to not pull a TV Ending and focus on thematic resolution over plot resolution. It combines both. Really this feels like the synthesis of the two previous endings. EoTV says "A better world can exist if you make it so. Accept your faults and realize people love you." End of Eva finished by saying "Life can be better and go on, being around others will help you learn about yourself, but you and others (especially those closest to you) have to live with the consequences of your past actions."
This movie combines both approaches to the Evangelion's message and then tells us "And it really doesn't have to be in the imaginary world of your favorite anime! Where reality and fiction join is troublesome but your life exists outside of that. And you and everyone else can move in a completely new direction! And even if your lives are separate, your connections were real and meaningful!"

To NGE's Gendo defense the show stopped foccusing on Gendo by the end of the series because Shinji himself stopped caring about him, his approval and getting into his good side after the Touji the pilot event. Also he's left out of the human instrumentalization project as a punishment by Kaworu, Rei and Yui (kinda ironic since Yui is the only other character not to join because her soul stays in the eva), so we don't have a moment of introspection from Gendo on TEoE. Still we get some bits of Gendo's inner feelings and relationships and the were way subtler, and also the paralelism to Shinji's personality is there, like, we know he approached Yui for convenience, that he was kind of a weird and aggresive to others, on Yui's death anniversary he shows a softer side to Shinji about his grief. Art’s a tough thing to criticize. I’ve come to see the plot of most or all of Eva to be no more than just a metaphor for interpersonal conflict between individuals. If taken at face value, yeah it’s jarrring and odd that gendo and shinji would make up their differences like that. But meta-textually, it makes sense. No amount of fighting, no matter how grandiose and world-shattering, will ever fix interpersonal differences until individuals lower their guards between each other and just talk with compassion, empathy, and forgiveness. Which seems to be the major through-line that’s been at the heart of Eva since 1995, really.

No... just no. Gendo and Shinji reconciling goes completely against the 90s series and movie. The point of the originals was about learning to love yourself and a large part of that is not seeking external validation, but providing your own. This is shown through multiple characters and arcs, it's the entire focus of Ep 25 and 26, and EoE in large part too. Gendo is meant to be an unforgivable asshole, and seeking his love is contradictory to the original point of Eva. 3.0 + 1.0 was contradictory in so many ways to the entire franchise before it, and that's probably deliberate, but that doesn't make it good.

Its crazy how all over the place the community is on the movie. I re-watched Rebuild before starting it last weekend and I loved 3.0+1.0. I will need to see how it holds up in the future, I'd rank it alongside EoE. I'm not a writer so I'm having trouble articulating, but this movie, in conjunction with what the rest of Rebuild, really made feel Shinji (and Misato, and Gendo/Lookalike to lesser degrees) had grown as people in a meta way. Whether that's over the 25 years of IRL time, the in universe resets, or as extensions of Anno himself.
I hear the complaints, but I just don't agree with them myself. The village/Rei stuff felt like something new to the series but familiar, like a Ghibli vibe, while also doing more to flesh out all of these characters and the world outside of the Nerv/Wille crew that we've always been with. About the CGI weirdness, I think it fits well with the tone of the events, and is just a modern take on the stuff from EoE. As for the no Eva reality, I didn't get the impression that the actual character build up was wiped since the characters seemed to have their memories, and they explicitly showed Asuka making it back to the village. I could definitely see "Eva gone, rebuild fucked world now" working, but I don't think it would fit with what they were going for here.
The only thing I'm not that big on was the Shikinami revelation. I really didn't see what this change brought to the table overall.

I think most of the characters are there to justify Gendo in some way.
I'm wondering whether or not Anno was weakest link in this film. I'm almost positive he would've been responsible for the Gendo-centred theme of this film.
Since 3.0 I've been of the mindset that it's Gendo not Shinji who is the directorial self insert in Evangelion, not just in the rebuilds either. I've even heard that the original Gendo character design was based off of Anno, which if true is just so very ironic in so many ways.
Which is kind of why my biggest fear for the final, even though after 3.0 I had mostly checked out, was Gendo disappearing into the stars with Rei and Yui, or Rei/Yui and Shinji getting a generic start your life again thing. Which is kind of what I think happened here, only it was Gendo being reborn in Kaworu and Rei in Yui I think, and they didn't disappear into the stars with the black moon. I think the Gendo-centric theme of this is what Anno cared about doing in Rebuild, this one at least, the rest just seemed like it was a hollow afterthought, which kind of shows in this film.
My hopes were a bit up for this film
Given that the tape player is Gendo's, Shinji's different take charge personality, Yui's Ayanami maiden name, The whole line "I don't care about the world I care about..." I had the hope that there would be a twist ending in this film where it turns out Rebuild Shinji is the original Gendo reborn, and that there was a flip flop between Gendo and Shinji that happened in Rebuild. And after redeeming himself and the world Shinji drifts alone in unit 01 or unit 13 since it's his sin or some shit until he meets the EoE unit 01 where it is revealed or hinted that Rebuild SHinji is the original Gendo or some kind of scenario where it's hinted or revealed in some way, would've completely blown my mind. It would've felt more evangeliony in it's subtlety as I looked back on all the hints while at the same time forcing me to have sympathy for Gendo. It probably would've been more believable and seemed more planned out then that contrived and convoluted 'Negative Adam, Spear of Galgolek Tooritooku' BS that had me clenching like I was in a dentist chair getting a scrape n polish.
But alas all the contrived lines/actions seemed like they were pretty much there to gain understanding and/or justification for gendo. That thing with Misato's kid in this film was pretty stupid and transparent, it reduced her character to a plot device to justify Gendo to the audience. Which miffed me since she is one of my favs. Shinji not being able to think of a name for Rei Q seemed dumb and pretty loaded too.
I wouldn't say the film is bad either, I mean that lore babble was the worst I had ever seen, but there is stuff I like it's just the stuff I like feels hollow and is overshadowed by the Gendo-centric theme of this film which feels like he didn't earn in the first place.
Even though I pretty much just viewed rebuild as pretty pictures, that maybe might have some concepts I like and can incorporate into my Eva brain vault, Having rebuild finish on such a mediocre final is a disappointing way to end a legendary franchise like this.
There are those that genuinely liked the film though and I am happy for them. And I could be completely wrong too and this movie triggers a whole new bunch of Evangelion fans. Which leads to more stuff I hope.

I have mixed feelings on the scenes with Gendo embracing Shinji...
On the one hand, as someone who has been a fan of Evangelion and as someone who has daddy issues (which is part of the reason why I was able to connect with the franchise and relate to the characters so much to begin with), it is pretty nice to see them sharing a hug.
On the other hand, I kind of liked the sort of "unresolved tragedy" of EoE a lot more, that Shinji and Gendo never really did resolve their conflicts, and Gendo only just admitted he fucked up before being metaphorically consumed by Unit 01. Plus, if I really want cathartic "daddy issues being resolved" anime, I'd just watch Clannad After Story.
Personally, and maybe I'm just biased because I've been shipping Shinji and Asuka since way back when, I was not a big fan of Mari winning at the end. Maybe if Mari was actually given an interesting personality, I would have been okay with it, but Mari is just so boring as a character imo. She has an admittedly attractive character design, but I need more than a pretty face if I'm going to root for two characters to be together. But again, maybe I'm just biased, because I've been an advocate of ShinjixAsuka for so many years, lol.

There was no reason for Misato to die. Compare to EoE, there was no struggle for survival for the crew, and we are repeatedly told that every crew member left the ship. It makes no sense for a ship that advanced doesn't have an autopilot mode. She died for the plot sake, which is horrible. And it looked as if she was abandoning her responsibility as a mother. Misato was a flawed adult who tried to do her best in the original series; now, she is an unreasonable, horrible person.

I knew from the moment I finished watching the film that many longtime Evangelion fans would have problems with it. As for me, I think it's about as good a conclusion as Rebuild possibly could have had. It structurally defied almost every expectation I had for it, in a good way. In my opinion, the village sequence was crucial for Shinji's growth as a character, as well as that of Rei Q and Asuka. The action setpieces were inspiring to me, as an animator, myself. I was even totally down with the kind of focus Gendo received, as a more traditional villain.
Also, as a huge fan of the other works of Studio Gainax, Khara, and Trigger, I felt this film's climax was stylistically on-brand for its creators, and it brought me immense nostalgia. It was surprisingly nice to see Evangelion handle itself this way, with such an emphasis on spectacle and optimism. It wonderfully compliments the opposing tone of the original series, and mirrors how Anno's attitude has evolved, over time. My only critical issue was with the backloaded overabundance of lore, and with the Spear of Gaius feeling like a massive deus ex machina. That all could have been revised, for sure, but I can shrug it off because the emotional impact of the ending still lands, for me. Every character felt like they got a proper sendoff, and I loved the metacommentary that ties Rebuild back into the original series. It all worked for me, but I can 100% understand why it wouldn't, for someone else.

After watching it two times now I think Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is a very good movie and a satisfying conclusion for the Neon Genesis Evangelion Franchise.
Considering the fact that I was very skeptical about it because I didn't like the previous movie Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo and my worst fears were that Evangelion 3.0+1.0 will end up like How I met your Mother Season 9, Game of Thrones Season 8 or Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (all of those things are a complete trainwreck imo), I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't that.

When you can insert any made up character in Kensukes place and get the same result it is hard to generate meaning behind it, it stuck me as bit lazy, like they couldn't be bothered thinking up a new character and of the known ones Kensuke just fit the bill the best. As for impact, when you're half expecting there to be scene with Shinji fapping while he peeps on Asuka and Mari going at it, then any blunted version of a similar scene/concept kind of tickles.
I hadn't thought about eva in a while but the trailers for this got my hopes up a bit. Even thinking of potential ways to have my mind blown. Like given how many of Shinji's actions can be attributed to the original gendo I had the hope of Rebuild Shinji turning out to be the original Gendo-reborn, and after letting go of Rei redeeming himself/the world he disappears alone in unit 01 or unit13 until he floats next to the EoE unit01. You could of even had an interesting Shinji/Gendo flip flop thing going on where it turns out the guy you were rooting for in rebuild turns out to be the guy you were rooting against in the original, and the guy you were rooting against in Rebuild turns out to be guy you were rooting for in the original. My hopes for that kind of ending were dashed when the reason for rebuild-shinji going through what Gendo went through with Yui was spelled out to me.
While I'm not deluded enough to hope for a Rei Shinji ending. I was hoping for something sweeter, like he gives one of the Rei's his face and the message to live her life away from Eva, Nerv, Gendo and him, and Rei Ayanami is reborn as Rei Ichigo, with Shinji giving a last goodbye to Asuka and him asking her to help Rei Ichigo live. What pisses me off is that this movie had a perfect set up to do exactly that but didn't. But you know, who's to say ReiII didn't end up in mari, as her character needs all the filling she can get.
The best concept I got from it was the idea that Shinji and Yui share one soul. Like due to there being no souls left in the chamber of guf, Yui sacrificed her soul to Shinji so he could have one. If that is the case then it confirms a lot of the negative stuff I thought about eva, but it also raises Yui's whole deal from 'anime mother sacrifice' trope to another level, and actually gave me some sympathy to Gendo, while also giving Mari's character some depth and much much much needed intrigue.
Basically I was thinking that maybe Mari is the beastial spirit in the evangelion, the one that tried to become one with Shinji when he was absorbed in the original. I could be reaching there and all that Yui/Shinji and Mari stuff is just my imagination. If true it would also prove the formula that Space Runner Ideon + The Seventh Sign/Seal(the Demi Moore one)= Evangelion.
My biggest fear for this was that it was going to be a generic start your life again Shinji' thing while Gendo disappears into the stars with Rei/Yui. After watching it I find myself wondering did some version of that happen? I'm really not sure the concepts and stuff are too mixed and kind of conflicting to be sure of anything really. You're right about Gendo being the core of this story, with events and some characters revolving around SHinji/audience gaining insight and understanding into his father, the character most notable for this being Misato.

I like that you mentioned the suspension of disbelief. ONe of the things I liked about the original was the subtle way it made the characters, world, tech/mech and even the mythology seem like they could be real. There really is none of that in Rebuild.
I couldn't like it or hate it, is that bad or good?

I understand your criticisms, but my only real problems with it personally are in the middle section because of messy action and confusing lore babble. Those things don't really lower my overall emotional reaction though. I guess it "technically" makes it a worse film, but it doesn't detract from the stuff I consider good, which is mostly the meta stuff and character moments. I think people who expect a satisfying story conclusion to the rebuilds themselves will be mixed, but I expected it to be a finale to all of Evangelion, on which it delivered. I don't care about the plot holes and stuff like that, because it all made sense on an emotional and meta-narrative level.

This movie is about Anno finding his happiness and adjusting Evangelion to fit his new worldview, so I’m confused as to why people genuinely see this as pure Evangelion and praise it as such. It does not mirror the original in any way other than visual callbacks, and can not really be viewed as an Evangelion continuation.
The characters are husks of their formal selves, and the unique resolutions they could have reached as individuals were cast aside to instead push Shinji forward.
I always interpreted Eva’s message as “Life can be painful, relationships can be scary, but the people around you have their own problems and struggles as well. Learn to love and accept yourself, and then reach out to the people around you. You can be happy in this difficult world.”
A huge emphasis in this is on the other characters and their lives.
But the resolution to this movie is
“If you’re reaching a dark place, someone will come to save you from yourself. As Long as you have their Support, you can rejoin society.”
The Hard reset shows how Little the other characters mean anymore. This story is about Anno (represented by Shinji and Gendo) being saved by his wife (Mari and Yui).
If you’d like to praise this movie, then praise it as Anno’s autobiographical mecha self insert fiction, but this is not Evangelion. After reading several first reactions to the ending, I feel as though I enjoyed a different Evangelion than the people who openly welcome the final rebuild.
I also disapprove of anyone praising or sympathizing with Gendo because of this film. An unfortunate past does not justify destroying the futures of everyone around you.

Because we didn't get the message to avoid escapism the first time? How would he even know or decide if the audience did or did not? Did he just receive 1 too many weeb den pics, and said fuck it, lets burn it all down.

What I was trying to say was that I don’t understand the praise that this movie is receiving BECAUSE it’s all about Anno now. I’ll edit my original comment to reflect that better.
But about escapism… as long as Evangelion is selling, SOMEONE will use it for escapism. I feel like Anno projects his problems onto the audience and then scolds us for what he does. We are not the ones producing the movies, we are just fans enjoying the art that he made.
I also feel like the group of people who dive head first into escapism would not understand that Eva was scolding them. It’s hard to convey a harsh message while also using nuance.
With that being said, Anno decided to destroy the Evangelion that we loved, so it’s baffling to me that people praise the destruction as if it’s a continuation.

I respectfully disagree on your interpretation of Rebuild’s message. The way I see it, is that life is about relationships. It’s wrong to make someone your source of happiness (like Gendo did with Yui, or Kaworu did with Shinji), because if you lose that person, then you lose your happiness. But at the same time, you can’t shut yourself off from the world or people, because there are people in this world that care about you and willing to help you through your struggles. Hence the name “You Are (Not) Alone” in one of the Rebuild movie titles. Shinji, or Anno in this case, learns this, and embraces this reality to let people in rather than shut them out.

This whole rebuild series was a dumpster fire man, I really wanted to like it but it feels like it focuses on the wrong areas. I don't want to be told Kaji just dies off-screen like a hero, I want to see the bits that helped set the world. I don't want to be straight up told Asuka is part of a clone series, put more clues and hint towards it early on throughout the movie, rather than just info-dumping the viewer at the near end. One other issue I had was the INSANE power creep that occurred over the course of the four movies. Going from one eva being a threat to fighting billions of these mock-evas head on like combo-fodder in a shoot-em-up removes any tension from the movie and makes it look ridiculous in comparison. In EoE, Asuka having to fight the perfect series Eva makes the viewer really feel the high stakes and emotion, and isn't afraid to pull any punches. The scope in that fight is much smaller, but it's much more isolating and terrifying to watch.
Once again, they really should have focused on new ideas for 3.0 + 1.0. Did we really need a fifth impact to attempt to fix the effects of the third and fourth? Did we really need a negative Adam? Did we really need another giant Rei when that's happened twice before in the rebuilds? Being able to see more of what happened in that 14 year time skip would have made the film more interesting and could have shown the viewers that interesting lore they just kinda dump on us instead through passing conversation and dialogue.

I will start with the fact that I never liked the rebuilds. They retcon all interesting, nuanced parts of the original and dumb it down for action. Now, continuing on,
For 3.0+1.0 my main issues is the fights as a whole, and Shinji’s magical inspiration and reconciliation with everyone.
The CGI used in all common fights feel like the Eva’s just float, and the fights are cluttered. There is massive amounts of CGI on screen at a time, and these massive fights are just cluttered hoards. Older fights from the TV series, EoE, and the rebuilds themselves have had more interesting, memorable fights with less mob enemies to mow down. The mass production units from EoE don’t even fight and their fight is more memorable. The fight in which Shinji and Asuka have to sinc their movements, I can’t remember the angels designation or name, is unique enough to remember. You have mind break angel, Auriel, I believe his name is, who mind-breaks Asuka. My point being, to make a memorable fight you don’t need more clutter. What you need is a unique idea, which the CGI Shinji vs. Gendo fight does have. I still dislike it over the out of place effects, and yes I know it was probably intended as stated by others, my issue is I still don’t like it. I can understand an artist’s purpose for painting a way, but I can still think its garbage.
Now the main issue, Shinji’s development. Shinji makes no growth through the village arc, except after Rei-Q dies and he magically decides to get up and fix what he has caused, a sentiment that seems, as you put it, unrealistic.
The village portion connects us to the world, but not Shinji, the character who can learn the most from all these experiences.
Shinji’s relationship with everyone else is also interesting, as a person who tried to destroy the world twice, he faces no repercussions for his second act. The first he is hated by all and fails to get Rei back, but the second there are no issues except for that one officer who’s name I can’t even remember. The same people who couldn’t explain what he had done in 3.0 while harboring intense hatred move on in this film. The ending also ends with Shinji never receiving any punishment from his acts. He gets a happy ending after all this when in EoE he actually has to live in the world he chose to create.
TLDR: All these previous issues can be boiled down to one thing, Mari, she must be burned. I can’t stand a second of her on screen.

    • @manhornhead2659

I actually am pretty surprised at just how unmemorable this movie turned out for me. Even the stuff that it is generally praised for is just 'meh' at best for me.
While I generally agree about Mari, there was zero effort, care, or even interest put into her character development , I don't think it can all be dumped on her though.
The main thing that bothers me about the film I think is Shinji. It's like he is a supporting character in his own story, like he is a plot device there to justify or give insight into Gendo. I hate that.

    • @can-chan6119
      @can-chan6119 2 роки тому +6

@@manhornhead2659 While my Mari statement was a joke, I do still hate her. I believe she is the feeling I get from the films fit into a character. She has no development, interesting backstory, or purpose, other than to make going berserk, something that is almost exclusive to Shinji to certain unfortunate circumstances, a common thing. The issues do exists outside her pointless character.
I agree with the lack of focus on Shinji. In all other rebuilds his character was in focus. For 3.0+1.0 however, he, as you said, takes a backseat to other’s. Rei gets focus in the village, which as I said, could have been better used to teach Shinji. In the final fight between Gendo and Shinji he again loses out to his father in terms of development. Gendo had no other major development, or clues of such, in any other of the films. In the TV series I would say the closest jarring moment is the later episode with the history of Steele and NERV told through Fuyutsuki.
All the films opportunities for us to learn about Shinji or for him to grow are given to others. This makes this film, in my opinion, the worst of the rebuilds as Shinji’s character, no matter how terrible he is, is ultimately the reason I watch NGE.
Also “the curse of the Eva” from 3.0. come on Anno, could you really think of nothing else so instead you threw a vague term that is never explored or elaborated further. This kind of revelation is usually followed up on. You could’ve built an interesting conflict or build it into the plot.

    • @manhornhead2659
      @manhornhead2659 2 роки тому +5

@@can-chan6119 I know you were sort of joking about Mari. Her purpose in this seems to simply be something like 'I'm the new girl and I wind up with Shinji, bet you didn't see that coming?' kind of thing. Someone poorly conjured up so Shinji wouldn't wind up alone or get a tragic, sacrifice bittersweet end or something. Which would've fit better and been a lot more impactful then this kind of hollow happy ending in my opinion.
Shinji's role in this somehow seems even more thankless in this one and the rebuilds then in the originals to me. He is more commentary then character in Rebuild, which actually is something that can argued in the originals too. Shinji's purpose in this is some sort of cross between a plot device there to justify and give insight into Gendo's character and commentary on Eva otakus who chase Eva waifus down the rabbit hole for over a decade. I think Shinji's whole character, his actions, his relationships are mostly defined through those two mandates in rebuild. Probably why Shinji's whole arc feels so much like an hollow afterthought to me in this.
This Gendo centric ending is what Rebuild was building to and i'm positive this is what Anno was wanting. I mean one thing that stands out when I look at the originals again is just how pro-Gendo they are to me. So much so that I now veiw Gendo as the vessel for Anno, which is just so ironic in many ways to me and has me veiwing all of Anno's Evangelion in a more cynical way.
I was never really into the rebuilds, mostly watching them for the pictures and any new tidbit of lore I like that I can incorparate into my own head-canon. But I am surprised at just how little, if any, stuff there is in Rebuild that I even like enough for me to do that.

I read this as a metaphor for the otaku audience who are still childlike in their Eva obsession from when they were kids, and all around them their old school mates are now adults. By the end of the film however, Shinji is an adult and has moved forward with his life, free of Eva. It's also a parallel for Anno himself, with Mari an insert for his wife who has brought him real happiness outside of his work.

Almost everything that you said were the same thought I had while watching the movie. It sets up so much while delivering so little. Some brief points:
    - Why fill so many scenes with overhauled lore babbling if you're not going to explain or at least give some clearer clues on how to understand the whole thing? If there's nothing to understand and only the character interactions matter, then don't put so many scenes with this nonsense and focus on more character development (which was shallow, despite the runtime of the film).
    - They basically discarded the character of Asuka, and her presence in the Rebuild was mainly for fanservice or being badass for a few minutes and then getting wrecked right after, and this pattern repated about three or four times in the Rebuild films. Her backstory is explained and resolved in about ten minutes near the ending, and the whole importance that Asuka had in the original series is non-existent here. Which leads me to the next point:
    - It seemed Asuka was sidelined so Mari could shine, right? Except she didn't. An extremely shallow character that received no development, her backstory is summed as "old friend of Gendo and Yui", and she acts more like a walking deus ex machina, than a character with real motivations.
    - Loads of teasing about Rebuild being a kind of "sequel" to the original series, and then they backpedal and tell us nothing, no compromise on saying if it is a sequel or a completely separate universe. The feeling of closure would be extremely higher if they had made real connections to the original series, would be like coming full circle and then breaking free of it...but, they just threw a bunch of pseudomystical terms and words and called it a day.
In closing, while Anno went a very dark route with End of Evangelion, it actually seemed he was invested in it, in expressing something. In 3.0+1.0, he seemed bored and his message was basically "I don't care anymore for any of this shit and you shouldn't too. Go live your life!", which is actually a valid message, but could be delivered with so much more care.

Interesting, I thought the village sequence was the best and most interesting part of the film and for me some of the most emotional as well for what it was, perhaps not in the context of the ending. It moved me to tears to see for the first time, I believe in the entire Eva Universe, a realistic sense of new life and new hope in humans and animals. Also, the contrast between Shinji as an eternal 14 year old and his now grown up schoolmates was so memorable to me. Another important thing from that portion of the film was Misato and Kaji's son, echoing one of the main themes of this show, yet another child abandoned by its parent though I think they could have done more with this premise. But this film rewards shinji after 40 minutes of being a waste of oxygen and space with a reset button.
At the end he kept being the same spineless coward, running away from everything that causes him pain, only this time he chose to create a world without the things he hates and without the repercussions of his actions instead of owning up to the consequences of his decisions and therefore ACTUALLY growing up and maturing salvaging the world Misato and Asuka fought to protect.
Now in 20 years we will get the rebuild of the rebuild. This time without the constraint of having to create an unnecessary moe character to appeal to the average anime watcher and a Shinji that actually grows with each mistake.
Neon Genesis Evangelion 5.0 You Can (Not) improve.

Shinji is kind of destined to suck or be held back in Anno's Evangelion. I think the only Evangelion Shinji won't be doomed to those things will be the Evangelion that Anno isn't involved with. Unfortunately I don't think this ending has the impact or staying power to generate hype for another Evangelion. Even if they did a new Eva with Shinji doing all that it would probably seem as hollow as Shinji's 'happy end' in this film
A cynical part of me thinks Anno's purpose for Rebuild was just to get a few more rips on Shinji/otaku's, kill a few more ships and finally give Gendo his happy end.

I honestly feel like 3.0+1.01 is the best possible ending for the Rebuilds, which on the whole were disappointing. It’s definitely Anno swinging for the fences, and the ambition is admirable, but it’s off in a lot of ways.

My initial thoughts after the first watch are that the story is... Ok, the final message is kinda on point and neat if you consider Eva as a whole, but the movie is just not good. At one point there's fast scenes where it's just word barf with no meaning. What I get most from it, is how anno is done with it that he had to literally make a scene where every Evangelion is murdered.

I think that i liked this movie after watching it, but thinking about it critically, it wasnt a masterpiece of something close to that, it was more like a comformist movie trying to appeal everyone.
I think many people, like me, like it because it impacted them on an emotional level. The goodbye of Anno in the franchise, and all the callbacks to EoE, the stakes raised from the previous film and the 9 years in between, Shinji saying goodbye to each character and growing up, the ending song, the meeting with Misato, etc. raises a lot of positive emotions in people, and those emotions mixed with ideas like moving on or going back to the real world or trying to connect with other people, etc. makes people feel motivated and thats why all the hype. Its up to us to use that motivation to something positive or just throw it away.
But yeah, the film is very shonen cliche. Shinji's recovering from his PSTD was fine and well done for me, but then this idea that he grew up and he is not going to cry or feel sad anymore is very unrealistic. Its ok to feel sad sometimes, its part of life, but he was like "oh, Misato died, too bad, well, time to continue, thx for the spear btw".
With the whole Rei Q part i have mixed feelings, her character was basically completed, minimalistically, when she decided to act for herself once instead of following orders. But i undestand that Anno, and everyone, wanted a more satysfying conclusion with Rei growing up and understanding the world (again), and confessing her love to Shinji (or almost), before dying. The farm part was cute and all, but it was a bit repetitive and also kinda unrealistic with all those forced interactions. I would have prefered to have her stay with Hikari and interact with her and her daughter a few times, to make her think a bit and realize what she likes and what she wants to do.
The fight scenes didnt convince me at all. It was just Mari and Asuka dealing with a swarm of Mpes like if they were flies and then mark 13 being op until the verbal confrontation between Shinji and Gendo. Personally, 2.0 was the only rebuild film i think did the fights correctly, not great but decently. 1.0 was kinda slow and they removed Sachiel time skip for no reason other than we alredy knew what was going to happen, and 3.0 was a bit over the place, but at least the automated evas were much more of a threat (Asuka literally would have lost to just 2 of them if not were for the fire coverage of Mary an Shinji's intervention), than the swarm of mpes. And of course, the swarm of mpes doesnt hold a candle to the 9 mpes from EoE.
I liked the confrontation between Shinji and Gendo. Maybe this is what makes me appreciate the film. But yeah, you need to not take literal that Gendo destroyed the world to like the scene. The same applies to Kensuke's line to Shinji about that he has to try to talk with his father. I was with Asuka there, like... Its moterfucking Gendo Ikari. But i take that scene for what it tries to communicate. Essentially, try to connect with your loved ones a bit more even if you think it is not wortg. Anyways, im with you that if your father is a redemless bastard like Gendo Ikari, sometimes it is better to stay away and try to not hold up a grudge.
The last moments with the characters are also purely nostalgic and emotional, but not really meaningfull. They just work to give a clousure to the series, and thats it. And i dont care for the huge CGI parts, i know the overused CGI was on purpose on the scenes it was used that way, but i dont think that reusing Giant Rei the way they did way make a big effect.
I think this movie could be compared with the very last episodes of Dragon Ball GT, a fanservice fill with Nostalgia and other emotions built along the way, which gave you the sensation of it being great, even though the quality of the product could be questionable. I will take this as an ending, mostly because it is a conclusion for the franchise and also because it doesnt make the fans thirsty for more eva, while also trying to give a positive message. I know however that Evangelion Super will come in the future though, but maybe not from Anno.

I’m gonna be honest: Ritsuko saying they are gonna have to improvise, and Maya responding that improvising is what they always do, felt like Anno & co. Saying “just make something up, I really don’t care and fans will settle with anything anyways”
I’m aware it doesn’t have to make 100% sense, but they didn’t have to resource to a Deus ex before (i.e. the Lance of Gaius)

The first half was the best part of the film, that leads to a disjointed narrative within the 2nd half of the film. It felt like the 2nd half was done by a different team to which Anno had to rush his thoughts about rebuild and cram it in the final 30 minutes of the movie. Horrible!

@Eva Monkey I feel like I want to give you a big hug. I know you've been a big fan for a very long time and very active in the online fandom. We were all looking forward to this film so much. It had a huge amount of anticipation and it was never going to make everyone happy.
When I saw the movie on Saturday for the first (and so far only) time, when the end credits rolled I was very angry. I wanted to wish away the entire Rebuild series. I hated Shinji being paired with Mari. It made no sense - where was the foreshadowing, why not one of the characters from NGE who fans have been with for decades?
I realised pretty quickly however, that I was being immature and selfish. I was being like Asuka, calling Anno an "idiot" out loud when his name came up on the credits. I was very wrong. The ending is really the only bit which upset me, but I've realised that it's immature of me to prefer and ending like EoE to an actual happy ending where Shinji, not the audience or the shippers, gets to choose who his pairing is and find his real happiness outside of the world of Eva.

Or bare with me now, the entire story was the depressing inner turmoil of Shinji. As in it was a representation of his depression and him finally over coming it, wakes to see the real world around him not this distorted nightmare one his depression is represented by. But also Shinji is actually anno and evangelion is actually his depression and his wife is Mary bringing him out of constant loops of despair (the three versions loop each other) that he keeps falling into. She is the biggest difference in the rebuilds and ultimately puts an end to the cycle of depression.

I feel like you’re criminally dismissing Gendo’s part of the story. He’s arguably the most infamous fathers in all of anime and the confrontation between him and Shinji which has been the first ever conflict in the entire series for 20+ years now, has never been explored whatsoever, and I’m supposed to believe that you “just don’t care.” It is recklessly irresponsible to dismiss this interaction which, I can not stress enough, has NEVER been explored. It’s insane to think how much of a screeching halt this series would’ve came to had at any point Shinji would just have had a talk to a Gendo that was willing to listen. Maybe Gendo would have had a far less of an impact on the lives of several of these children, had Shinji and Gendo just talked. It honestly didn’t feel like he was even a character before this movie, and that’s given his already established motivation of wanting to see Yui again. We essentially all assumed why he wanted that, but this film shows you precisely why in a way that’s never been done before. Just those two elements makes this film every bit of a worth the 2 and half hour watch.

LOL big surprise: his story is almost identical to shinji’s - amazing writing. So glad we watched these four films to find out the character who represented the negative outcome for shinji… was the negative outcome for shinji. Glad talking made him change his mind after trying (and succeeding) in murdering almost everyone. It’s just terribly written my dude. I agree, it could have been interesting but what we got imo was lazy, uninspired and ultimately boring. Pretty sure EoE covers the exact same ground with gendo in one tenth of the time.

Are you stupid? Shinji and Gendo might be the same in terms of their general detachment, but they grew up in completely different circumstances and made significantly unique choices in their lives that lead them to where they were. Rather than face the real world where the village is still there, the world is ruined and we have what we have. All we can do is move forwards with what we have. Not Shinji though, the PTSD got to him and he’ll never face reality.
Honestly. That real world footage at the end of a WuFlu empty Japanese streets (probably when they filmed the drone footage) and the virus probably swayed the film’s ending in that direction. Anno probably wanted a happy ending to Metal Gear Solid 4: You (cannot) have a never ending story inception.

Ultimately, I feel the complete experience was *_quite_* hackneyed. For something that took so long to make-- and from an aged-man with no children to consume his free time, no less-- you would have thought this series should have been a masterpiece... a perfect facsimile of his artistic vision. It is not. The CGI looked atrocious. Shinji's eyelashes are animated with more FPS than 90% of the film. What was the reasoning behind this? Further still, the original message of the T.V. series seems to have been completely discarded. Instead of learning to love yourself for who you are, now the goal is to love what other people want you to be, or else you are considered to be running away from reality. I find this to be highly, highly unfortunate. This message, told in such an advanced way, was what made EVA so remarkable for its time.
I also think that, while some individual quotes, or facets of the overall "message" can be considered "beautiful," this does not make the film itself beautiful, or even "good." There's a good quote from Hikari, for instance... "Right now, I'm as young as I'll ever be!" I really appreciated the sentiment of this quote, and I think it belongs in a movie with this kind of message. But again, this message should not be in an EVA movie.
