    I Do (Not) Love This Movie. In this EVANGELION 3.0+1.0 Movie Review, JobbytheHong critiques the latest addition to the Neon Genesis Evangelion / Rebuild of Evangelion anime franchise. This is also Jobby's attempt at an "Evangelion Ending Explained" video. Also known as Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, this anime movie is the final Evangelion movie directed by Hideaki Anno. Sad to see him go, he handled his characters so well: Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, Asuka, and Mari. Evangelion Rebuild would not be the same without her....I wish I was watching End of Evangelion

      iirc in one of the side material Mari was one of Fuyutsuki's department's youngest members and she was jelly Gendo picked Yui instead of her, and something something ageing suspension so she went after Shinji.
      Just a reminder than wife-inserts are often really jarring, just look at the Resident Evil movies after the first few, and the Monster Hunter live action movie. Wife fanfiction is terrible.

    While I honestly liked the movie because it was more optimistic, I do agree that it felt kinda weird at the end. Especially with Mari suddenly getting together with Shinji despite them barely interacting with each other throughout the movies. But I think it's because Mari was supposed to be based on Anno's wife according to one of my friends.

    • @MrDuckyart
      @MrDuckyart 3 роки тому +175

      Yeah there's a lot of background context to Mari being Anno's wife-insert. A lot of Japanese fans iirc when the movie first came out, especially the old Eva nerds and the generation of otaku Anno helped foster weren't happy with what they perceived as Anno say "lol just find a hot, supportive wife like me lol anime isn't real" which is compounded by a whole bunch of dialogue and scenes throughout the movie. The amount of shade Anno throws at his fans (from an early line in the movie about all young men do is complain to the heart-to-heart conversation with Gendo and the scene in the mocap room) was honestly HILARIOUS and I don't blame him since (a) they keep insisting on dragging him back to a franchise he doesn't have particularly good memories of and (b) he really, really does like his own fans

      @@sedftnio I agree with this. Especially since the best girl Asuka-Rei war has been raging for far too long. I personally find that Asuka is my favorite, but it would feel like an injustice to both Shinji's and her own character for them to just end up together.

      According to some interviews with the director/cast/crew , Shinji doesn't necessarily end up with Mari as the interaction wasn't meant to be taken as romantic. The ending was meant to be ambiguous. I do agree that the ending could have been handled a bit better though.

    • @SmileRYO
      @SmileRYO 3 роки тому +77

      I could see why the general public at large blames him, but the movies both 3.0 and 3.0+1.0 throw out implications that he wasn't even the one to finish it. It was the angel that got inside Mk.06 and fused with Lilith. 3.0 shows the literal aftermath in Central Dogma and 3.0+1.0 has the scene where Kaji is the one that goes to stop it which we only get the glimpse of.

      It's a metaphor... If trying to save someone will result in the absolute destruction of your world then your wish to save them(although well intended) is self destructive, finally realizing that is part of the road to maturity for shinji . Plus, rei represents anime girls (passive and always ready for you to project what you want them to be)

    • @the25thprime
      @the25thprime 2 роки тому +27

      @@L1z43vr "the ends don't justify the means" doesn't even apply here? That's a phrase that's used to describe people trying to achieve a "good" goal through intentionally unjustified actions. Blaming Shinji for this is tantamount to blaming someone for stealing from an atm while a gun is held to their head. He was forced and manipulated into the situation in the first place, Gendo is entirely to blame. I could see that excuse being used to describe Eva Shinji, because he was far more aware of what was going on around him amd chose instrumentality. Rebuild shinji was still a puppet when he was used to jumpstart instrumentality. There's a reason that theres a huge distinction between murder and manslaughter but your logic basically makes them one and the same.

    He's the most selfish, callous piece of shit in all of anime as far as I'm concerned, but Shinji was basically crying out for his father's approval the whole bloody series. it wouldn't have killed Gendo to give it to him.

So did everyone get mad at Shinji for something he didn't even do and for something that he didn't think would happen? From what I could tell (and have heard) Mari was supposed to stand-in as Anno's wife, who basically came out of nowhere and brought a lot of happiness in his life. Her hamfistedly starting a new life with Shinji works on a meta-textual level in this regard but it doesn't lend well to a standalone narrative since it's heavily reliant on the pop cultural understanding of the series as a whole.

    For someone who actually struggled and still isn't out of depression, this was the ending I think I was the most happy with. I see your "it was too optimistic" point of view, but, to me, I believe it was what I needed. I've always seen hope in Eva, that's why episode 25 and 26 are still my fav ending, even EoE still has some, so I think seeing it, the story of characters I so deeply empathetize with, the happy ending really gave me just another push towards completely healing. Seeing Anno being in such a better place now made me believe I can get out too.
    Yes, we all suffer, yes we don't all get happiness even after suffering, but I need to believe I will eventually or I have nothing left to keep me here.
    This was the ending I think the people who really deeply resonated with Eva needed, more than the one that reflects our vision of the world (which is one of self blame, self hatred and the belief we deserve the pain we are going through since we see ourselves as worthless). It is what we need to believe to save ourselves. Hope to heal and grow up.

But in this movie, he learned to move on from his mistakes and letting go of the traumatic past he has. I like when Shinji is no longer afraid to pilot an Eva in this movie after so many things he has already seen, and I am very glad that he can finally have a rest and can be happy after all the Eva Curse he went through, I now I am a sucker for a Happy Ending but still, I am glad Anno finally ended his amazing series. The whole reason Mari is there is to serve as the one character that's not been broken by trauma and turned into an anti-social mess - she's the one person that has her life together, and all of the other characters get to lean on her as a support figure, and through her, they slowly learn how to take back control of their lives and use that in their interactions with each other. I'm not saying she's the sole reason for character development, but she certainly plays a big role, because of how she lifts up those around her.

      To put it in one phrase, Mari is the impact character. (No pun intended)
      Typically, main characters change themselves, either positively and align with the rest of the storyworld, or negatively and further divorce themselves from it. What about the characters who have already made the positive change? These characters have corrected enough flaws within themselves (or never had any relevant flaws to begin with) to gain the power to positively change the flawed world around them by teaching what they have learnt; They create an IMPACT on the surrounding world through their flat arc.
      For example, Hogarth from The Iron Giant is like if the impact character had the leading role, Hogarth is heavily tested by the flawed world around him but never caves in throughout the story; He makes the world around him a better place by teaching the people he knows not to fear the unknown (Symbolised by the giant and the cold war setting).

They can have a "Happy" ending but to act like everything is totally fine completely shrugs off the weight of previous sacrifices and character development. I'm a huge star wars fan and people are realizing how depressing the overall story is as more and more material is coming out showing tragedy after tragedy until Return of The Jedi where victory is FINALLY earned and you feel the full weight of it knowing what it took to get there. I just feel like the story didn't have a moment which would be the equivalent of Luke watching his father's body burn as the world celebrates around him because that's HIS loss and his character development. Without that scene it would kinda just feel like "Hehe my dad's dead, I'm gonna go have a party with teddy bears."

    The main message that I got out of 3+1 was acceptance. Gendo finally accepted that Yui is gone, and that he was a horrible father. Misato accepted her failings as a mother and chose self-sacrifice. Asuka accepted that she did have feelings for Shinji at one point, and moved on from him (and presumably formed some kind of relationship with Kensuke). Rei (or at the very least Sokkuri-san) accepted humanity and individuality. Shinji matured enough to realize that the ideal he was striving for with each iteration of the time loop was fictional and unattainable, and accepted reality. Mari accepted Shinji for who he is and took the burden of his guilt from him (symbolized by the choker).
    Overall the rebuilds would have probably been better executed as a full series rather than just a quadrilogy of movies, but taken in the context that the rebuilds are the final iteration of the time loop, I feel it shows a shift in world-view that Anno has had between the original series and the rebuilds. Instead of focusing solely on life's suffering, accepting life for what it is and reaching out to others to make our burdens light.

    I really enjoyed this movie, but I definitely agree about Mari. I love her character concept wherein a cast of screwed-up people who pilot giant robots because of personal issues, Mari just does it for fun. That's a great contrast from the OG trio and could make for a very interesting character, but I felt Mari's interactions with the cast said more about those around her than they did about Mari herself. Like for the last scene in the movie, Shinji's relationship with Mari more shows Shinji is able to find happiness free of any of the emotional baggage he had with the familiar cast rather than anything about Mari's character.

      Mari is absolutely the most clunkily executed part of the Rebuilds. I’m fine with her concept and I didn’t hate her in this movie, nor do I really hate the ending, but she really just needed more character development and at least SOME additional interaction with Shinji beyond mashing her boobs in his face that one time. 2.0 was supposed to have some additional Mari + Shinji scenes that got cut due to runtime, and I think that defintirly hurts her believability and investment as a character.

    • @dez4668
      @dez4668 3 роки тому +16

      The common take of Mari as a stand in for Anno's wife I find to be incredibly reductive. I wasn't really a fan of her inclusion in the prior rebuilds at first but after seeing her in this movie I prefer it retroactively as to have her not just dumped into this film, where she plays a great role.
      For me Mari works on two levels, within the narrative of the film Mari is the one who takes Shinji from the beach he ends up on after he performs "neon genesis." This part where the shot deconstructs into it's base components (storyboard, stills) to me is metaphorical of Shinji forgetting the events that made him Shinji because he has destroyed the world with evangelions, and Shinji's development is based around evangelion! (Shinji suffers because of Yui's plan to become god, and spends a large amount of time in the rebuild and original inside Evangelion/Unit-01/Yui). Mari, as the only living member of that original research team, saves Shinji by reminding him that those memories and experiences still exist in his memory and are important, and that he cannot just "move on" but also must, as he did at the beginning of the film, reflect and learn from them. This is why Mari can interact with and holds onto the DSS choker at the end, because she is Shinji's link back to those experiences.
      Outside of the narrative. I interpret Mari as a more generous look at the modern "otaku" that celebrates a healthy enjoyment of evangelion/anime. I come to this conclusion based on two core parts of Mari's style of speech. Her use of phrases in various languages (english, french, etc.) is emblematic of a connection with the broader world (people of more niche/nerdish/introverted interests brought together by a base level of anonymity on the internet + over cultural/language borders) and secondly her use of pet names to refer to the other evangelion pilots (puppy boy, your highness.) This to me is representative of "fanon" versions of characters who embody one or more comedic traits of a character which are typically caricatured for the sake of comedy/simple character explanation and analysis. The only place Mari can really interact with the narrative effectively (helping Shinji, the core of evangelion since NGE) is in the imaginary dimension, where the barriers between fiction (evangelion) and reality (reality) are weakest, in the opening scene her evangelion lacks arms! (Couldn't be more obvious, no hands = no meaningful connections can be made *and* no action can be taken. There's also something to be said about her "consuming" the other evangelions (healthy consumption of media?) but I might need to rewatch before I'm concluded on that. The reason Mari here can interact with the DSS choker is because it's representative of what *she* - the consumer takes from evangelion. Anno doesn't criticize Mari the same way he previously criticized otaku because Mari both has a healthy relationship with the media she consumes (healthiest, happiest romantic option for Shinji) but also because she is social and has friends (modern internet culture allows for the creation of meaningful bonds through shared introverted interests, giving people the power to face reality and improve as people).
      I think the comment you about Mari's moments being more about other characters than Mari works a lot better when you either look at the second interpretation, where she's very much seperate from the rest of the cast, or when you view her as more of a symbol than a character. But it's a very apt criticism nonetheless. Mari has been in a standout in my post-viewing thoughts/analysis so I'm a lot more fond of her, plus I found her very entertaining when her ero fanservice wasn't being shoved down my throat

    I liked the reconciliation between Gendo and Shinji, probably the best part of the movie for me. But I have similar issues with this movie. It's so weird because Neon Genesis Evangelion and EoE was about the dangers of running away from your problems by using escapism yet what this movie says is that it's okay that these characters get to run away from their very real to them problems if it's them running away into our world. Which is weird because EoE made a point by using real life footage which is sorta the same thing as Shinji running away with Mari at the end of 3.0 + 1.0 but not really. The real life footage in EoE was meant to teach Shinji that escaping to a world much bigger than his which would have its own problems but without some of his problems would ring just as hollow as escaping to one where he's a regular school boy. This fit the story and the characters a lot better than erasing Eva from existence and all of their own problems making the lesson of the dangers of getting lost in escapism so muddled. Because it could very easily be interpreted as "It's okay to escape from your problems using entertainment if its handling is in real life.". This feels more like a closing of Hideaki's younger self issues than the characters' own but just because you're happy about your wife does not mean that Shinji who's barely met this woman would also like your wife. If they'd thought about Mari's character earlier, not have her parachute down from out of nowhere, and given her some more development then maybe it would've been way better. But I think that EoE did the message of NGE way better but an End of Evangelion that I'd like would be just to somehow add the Gendo reconciliation with Shinji into EoE but it's not like it's necessary since it's shows that not all relationships get to have an epic climax maybe a simple "Sorry, Shinji." is the best you'll get, even if you don't get to hear it.

It’s kind of hard with this movie because it’s highs are really high but it’s lows are also really low, so it’s hard to give a score that accurately reflects the entire movie. If I were to break it down, I’d give Act 1 a solid 10/10, Act 2 a 5/10 and the ending an 8/10, which ends up averaging to around 7.5 anyways. i think the biggest issue with the rebuilds is that fact that anno sacrificed a coherent narrative for metacommentary. When you view it with the understanding of who anno is, and his perspective on the series, the movies are alot more enjoyable and make more sense, but when you try to watch the movies as their own stand alone story it becomes apparent how much of a mess the whole thing really is. NGE suffered from this too but to a much lesser extent

      NGE suffered less, because there was literally more time spent on making it cohesive.
      The Rebuild series, as Jobby points out, suffers from Michael Bay syndrome. As much as the ending of the original series was weird due to budget constraints, that weirdness allowed Anno to be creative with how he wanted to convey his message. But because the Rebuild series has so much money behind it and no one actually telling Anno no, it became a problem with just visual bloat. Like, even if you compare the earlier Rebuild movies to this one, you can see that less is more. You can have mass consequences and grand scale, without visual clutter trying to do everything.

    I agree so much with you, i had enjoyed the rebuilds up until this movie. To me 3.0 + 1.0 feels very disconnected with the rest of the rebuild movies. I really really hated the fan service shots because it's obvious that those shots were there for the horny people. The "fanservice" in NGE wasn't just "haha tittie let me take it out and bust a quick one" it was there to show us how the characters viewed themselves, for example the scene where Shinji falls onto Rei and accidentally grops her, that wasn't just a typical "hahaa anime groping" scene it was to demonstrate how little Rei thinks of herself and how she doesn't care if she's touched like that. The ending for me wasn't earned because it embraces the escapist fantasy that NGE and EOE were telling you not to fall for, it's so stupid how Shinji is able to rewrite everything at the end so everything is honky dory sure we don't know how much time has passed since Instrumentality and the final scene but that's also the same for End of Eva. We know time has clearly passed but the world is still screwed up and not fixed. I don't hate the movie it was just extremely underwhelming to me and before someone comes and tells me i am a nostalgic fanboy who hates the rebuilds and just wanted NGE all over again just know i got into Evangelion when it was released on Netflix and i had loved rebuild movies 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0, Thrice Upon a Time had just dissapointed me

      Isn't human instrumentality the escapist ending? Rejection of the Evas is rejecting the escape of the purpouse and meaning Shinji created for himself through the Evas. I think Thrice Upon a Time combines the anti-escapist message from the T.V. ending and the acceptance of the consequences of your actions and their effects on others like in EoE. The destruction of the Evas also symbolizes the conclusion of Anno's life quest, Evangelion. The Evas are to Shinji as Evangelion is to Anno.

    I'll put my interpretation here with some background.
    I've watched the show 2 years ago and I loved it. Cried at the ending of episode 26 feeling understood after going through depression myself.
    Watched the rebuilds only now since I heard of the final one coming out. The first movie was alright, the second one I didn't enjoy as much and the third one I straight up hated it.
    At the end of this one I cried again.
    If the anime finale was about shinji I felt like this one's more about gendoh. I hated Mari right until the end, but that's when it hit me. The way I looked at this movie is through a "depression filter". What I mean is that it shows you how much there's to enjoy in life, even in the simplest of things that often we give for granted. How depression can be beaten, with the help of others...
    All characters are part of Anno's personality and this time (unlike in end of Eva) they have overcome their problems as has Anno himself. This is a happy ending because it's HIS happy ending, if that makes sense.
    From a technical standpoint I've got nothing to say except that some fighting scenes were a bit meh, I felt the Michael Bay effect too.
    I personally didn't like the fanservice in the show and here there was even more.
    If some fighting sequences were a little less tedious (the ones with the wunder weren't too interesting at times) and the fanservice wasn't so blatant I'd give this a 10. The village sequence is a feast for the eyes and Gendoh's final moments are beautifully designed (which given the complex set of emotions and character depth it's hard to convey in terms of pictures and animation)

I think Rei was done really well by helping him overcome what happened to Kaworu and her death really made Shinji grow. I was so taken aback when the movie started to focus on Asuka at the end and Kensuke showed up out of nowhere wearing the doll costume, that was the DUMBEST thing I’ve seen. At first, I was thought “maybe that’s okay, after all Asuka is older than Shinji now” but then they reveal that Mari is MUCH older than Shinji and it’s now okay? At the train station at the end of the movie, Shinji and Mari are adults but so is Asuka, so why didn’t Shinji get with Asuka? Honestly, it feels like Asuka got the short end of the stick here. I like Kensuke and Mari but they got very little screen time or enough character development to warrant ending up with our main characters. Whereas I felt that the original series was focused on the value of living life, Shin Eva is more of a meta conclusion of Evangelion for me. The message that I got of "letting go of the past and moving on with the future" coincides with Anno's journey of ending Evangelion for good and working on other projects he truly loves. A "Neon Genesis" as they in the film, where Shinji literally rewrites the world to be rid of Evangelions. While I always liked the Rebuild series, its something that could never top the original for me and is more taken as a "what if?" scenario with more anime tropes than the original had (and more CGI).
    That being said, there was a level of profundity for me in Thrice Upon a Time than in the prior three Rebuild Films and its something that I find strangely amazing. The music and many of the emotional beats with the characters in this film are especially powerful as a dude who grew up with his brother's Evangelion VHS tapes in the early 2000s. As someone who loves Kaworu's character, it was very surprising to see even he finds his catharsis through the additional impact, and I have to admit seeing him cry with happiness tugged hard at my heartstrings.
    The original series is an embodiment of Anno at that moment in his life, which is why its so down to earth and often times uncomfortably real and painful. In that regard, its something that shouldn't (and thankfully can't) be recreated perfectly. Regardless, this whole journey through the Rebuilds and waiting for their ending was something worthwhile for me.

      But it isn't a what if, and in the Rebuild verse, is the same verse as the original series.
      If Shinji kept on the same path as the original, it would have ended the same, but he rejected it.

    In my school vr game, Goalius was told by Davoth to eliminate Shinji, and the boss fight against Shinji in Eva 1 was armageddic where this fight ended with Goalius stabbed twice by the lances and went through the pain and then killed shinji but causing 5th impact which destroyed the rebuild timeline (Goalius was saved by Geras after the credits of the Eva characters)

    A year later and somehow I missed this review, wtf?. But I agree with your sentiments. It's weird how simple scenes like when unit 01 rips out of a Angel are more memorable then the entire new movie fight scenes. There's something to feeling and weight behind a scene rather then quantity.

    I think that shinji gets with mari not because of her character, but because of what see represents. Anno said that “Eva was a story that loops” and also how Mari symbolises the difference between nge and roe so in a way, shinji is choose to go a different path and break the loop of his suffering. I think this makes sense since the additional impact seemed to kinda break the fourth wall so he knows how to break the cycle

    It's funny that EOE which is well developed, has a critical, amazing, important message, and exploits the animation to its fullest doesn't have as many praised or awards as it deserves.
    Whereas the last rebuild movie with all its contradictions to the franchise, changing the philosophy of the EOE's message, nonsensically trying to give a hollow happy ending to the characters without earning it as well as changing their personalities to their worst, imposing more meta than writing a well concluded story ,a horrendous cgi elements that draw more people to it to give an explanation of how bad is good than the 2d animation, has an award as the best animated movie of 2021 in japan, plenty of blind praised, and will exquise the franchise more for just money because I am sure there will be other 2 or 5 "end of Evangelion" in the following years to *"justify"* more and more nonsense. Such a letdown.

    I wasn't a massive fan either. Far too many things are unresolved. I feel like they did Asuka dirty (And no, not b/c she didn't get with Shinji) because she suffered so much with literally no conclusion to actually seeing her happy. Never actually got to see her truly develop as a character. Also, Fan serviced her too much. Interesting character wasted and tossed to the side by Shinji after waiting so god damn long.
    Many other things as well. It wasn't all bad but it felt like Anno got too distracted with his "message" by the end instead of actually fleshing things out with the story first. The ending was happy but it didn't feel deserved (yet). Like there are far too many unresolved conclusions that leave the viewer wondering after waiting for so long. Too many interpretations for no reason honestly. meh. Sucks as a big fan of the Eva series but it's better than nothing I guess.

    Action/Animation: I already disliked Remake's use of CGI and my tipping point on top of that were 2.22's new "abstract art" Angels. So you can only imagine how completely disconnected and apathetic I was in regard to every single action scene in the last 2 movies which definitely ramped those bad aspects up by 1000%, now being all about grand "abstract art" performances (not even "angels" or "battles" at this point, just Olympic performances of some sort, including no regard to self-imposed limits toward good directing and framing), even small-scale fights have Shonen-aura-arms or are just an art piece backdrop for a dialog section (I get there's a message and the fighting ain't relevant, but the original & EoE also have messages and meaning within the fights while still treating them as a [relative] down-to-earth affair rather than avant-garde disconnected-from-reality animation segments)
    Plot/Story: Aight, I guess. Sameself body of messages we've had before Remake, new perspective here and there, definitely covered before this movie came out via fan discussions and youtube videos even with my casual participation in them. While ok, I don't see this aspect as THE reason to watch this movie. Too bad the village segment (my favourite) is useless when the end re-dos all those people's efforts with the new reality, felt like it was just an addendum to explain the transition between 2.22 and 3.33 as well as some world-building (again meaningless because everything "resets" if I'm understanding it right).
    META: Is all the Remake has going for it, especially this movie. But after decades of discussing about the show and meta elements I actually care little for it. Glad to see Anno having fun expressing himself however he wishes, but it's just not the thing for me at this point. I mean, EoE was also ridden with meta in your face, especially the theatre shot and "fan" letters, but it was a highly enjoyable movie on its own, regardless of those asides.
    Movie: 4/10 (with all points going towards the village part alone)

    Honestly I loved 3.0+1.0, it wasn’t what I wanted but I still felt satisfied with the open ended conclusion. How they did Shinji and other Rei was really well done imo, and that part with Eva 01 reactivating WAS SICK. It would never top EoE and I knew it wouldn’t. I knew many people wouldn’t love or like it, and I can actually understand why, it’s got a lot of creative choices that some may or may not like. Though we can all agree that we’re happy Anno is free and doin a hell of a lot better.

    Mari introduced herself like 20 minutes before the end, and ends up as canon romance is so ridiculous. She should of had a bigger presence in Shinji's recovery for it to warrant a pairing. The animation was ughhh...they moved so fast that it shakes the belief that they're fighting in 75 meter robots. While the first 3 film( EOE and Rebuild 1 and 2) had slower animation, i felt weight of the action giving more stakes to the movie. Also these films simplified all the characters to basic archetypes. Part of the charm of the original series, was complex and conflicted each character was. Either way the rebuilds are good as standalone, but in no way replaces the original series.

    I agree with all of these points. Personally I went into this movie not thinking about it as a finale but as a goodbye, and I still stand by this now, after having watched it twice. For me End of Eva will always be the true ending of the series, the one that encapsulates its message the best. But this film was a thoroughly enjoyable farewell and I've already made peace with its short comings. Goodbye, all of Evangelion.
    P.S. DAMN THAT SOUNDTRACK IS REALLY GOOD THOUGH.

  • @RageJ

    I think 3+1 is over all a weak movie but I thought it was heartfelt and I appreciated the positive outlook on it. In many ways the vibe I got from the finale was Anno taking Eva back from the fans and bringing it back into his hands, I think his goal was to pretty much reach the same type of finale as EoE (like a world reset thing) but instead of making it sting it's to show that hey life can be better after terrible periods in your life. Since EoE was made during the height of Anno's depression it only makes sense that 3+1 feels a bit more like a mirror reflection of it. It's the same, but the intentions are different, more kind. THAT BEING SAID, the second act of the movie is a fucking mess and the build up to the finale was clunky as all hell and some of the sequences just do not flow properly and the pacing is straight batshit insane, like a 16 year old trying to figure out how to ease in the gas for the first time, it's just fuckin jerky..

    I’m sorry, I disagree. I think we (and Anno) deserved a “good ending” after a 26 year journey. In my opinion the rebuilds weren’t meant to bring in a new audience or new blood. They were meant to bring a story to its conclusion. Take the original series and EoE how you will, but I see them as necessary for setting up the narrative and the rebuilds move everything up and ends it.
    It was definitely divergent from the original series. But the Entire series, rebuilds and all, are a masterpiece of art.

    "Everyone suffers" - No they don't. Everyone believes that they suffer. The overwhelming majority of people do just fine and no, they do not deserve a happy ending for their perceived suffering. If you go find people who really suffered and really listen to their stories, you'll be impressed that they survived what they went through. If you find those people and listen, I doubt you will tell me afterwards that you don't think they deserve to be happy after what they suffered.
