We need a video like this about Yoshiyuki Tomino
More people need to provide sources for their informative videos. Thank you for being among the few that do.
Soooo much respect for putting sources!
@@sspringNG always do!
@@Stevem NGE is the most pretentious shitshow I've ever watched. These elitist normies loved this garbage because it is a "deconstructed" form of the mecha genre, but in reality it is a tasteless mecha anime with a flavor of philosophical, religious, and psychological BS, as well as sex, gore, and violence.
You know the video is gonna be good when it's about Anno and it's longer than Endgame.
Lol I don't know how long endgame was but yeah it went longer than I expected
@@Stevem This is almost as long as the infamous snider cut 😅
@@viderevero1338 It's getting near the runtime of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Extended Edition.
wait those are almost twenty years old
dear god I'm OLD😱
These animations are quite awesome!
#ConsciousPlanet
Still a better love story than Twilight
it just blows my mind how they were able to draw and animate so well when so young. like BRUH what do I have to do to draw like this besides being blessed by gods
funny you say that anno thought he peaked pretty young animating wise and thats the reason he wanted to go into directing
@@Stevem damn, there is something to be said about that raw youth talent and energy
@@p5rsona wrists can get brittler over time haha
It's not just talent--Japanese animation schools are probably extremely rigorous and ink work in particular has an important place in the cultural heritage.
@@rjeffrey743 he didn't go to one of those and he's a college drop out lol
The Shinji hate definitely did come from people's insecurity. Because you had a character who felt helpless and was trying to figure things out but was in a situation where he wasn't allowed to. That creates real fear within people. It's why I always liked Shinji.
I feel like that's the case for most things, even if the people complaining about it aren't aware of it.
After all, self reflection is an easy enough concept to understand, but very few can truly use it effectively.
It's almost saddening that when someone criticises a depressed character in a show, their criticism is often discounted to "people's insecurity". Some people genuinely find characters like Shinji annoying due to societal reasons, or because people genuinely find characters such as Shinji aggravating. And it's often because they're not fun to watch for general audiences. If you're going to follow a main character whose antics are often to be told off and be sulking, crying or screaming all the time, then most people's patience will wear thin.
I personally like Shinji, but I also found him very sufferable at times. On the other hand, I DESPISE Subaru from Re:Zero. Hating a character doesn't mean you're projecting, it just means that you hate the character.
On the other hand, people who think Shinji isn't a man are definitely conveying their own insecurities, but there is a cultural aspect to this.
Shinji is a garbage person/character.
@@Manganization Just curious, why do you despite Subaru?
@@Skycrusher Subaru is just insufferable earlier on. It's less his personality and more his stupidity. I completely understand why he's acting the way he is but that doesn't make him any less aggravating to me.
Didn't realise until the very end that your beard was getting longer and longer, the amount of commitment in this video is INSANE. Well done!
i didnt shave for like 10 months yeah ahahh
Amazing work on this. Thank you so much. Everything was incredibly interesting and now I want to go watch older works that Anno did.
@@todddahlquist7584 glad you enjoyed
@@Stevem When I first noticed the fuller beard I seriously thought you were doing this as a bit. Like you had written the whole thing out and were recording backwards, gradually cutting your hair and beard, in order to make a statement about how long the Evangelion project took from beginning to end. But this is just as funny tbh.
49:51 was the moment he became Obi-Wan Kenobi
As a decades-long Eva and Anno stan I wanna commend you for your effort. You've helped dispel a bunch of misinformation I'd long believed regarding End of Evangelion's intentions and the death threats and all of that. I also really appreciated your special emphasis on describing Anno's eclectic directorial style, which I feel gets glossed over when discussing Eva. I pray this video didn't send you into a spiraling depression and now you have to make a Godzilla movie to revive you. Well done sir, keep up the good work.
thank you for the donation and kind words it was a struggle towards the end and i'm still probs feeling the aftermath ahha but I'm trying to move forward!
you stan a guy who Iikes kids?
nah that would be sick, give us a new Godzilla movie from your despair!
@@lillith7257 came here to say this
NGL, I’m a little envious of Anno that even while his mental health was plummeting, he still managed to create works that we’re still watching and discussing. It shows that mental illnesses don’t have to be an impassable obstacle
Well there's a couple things to add to this , it wasnt him on his own and it was his job so there's levels of pressure there. There are points at his lowest when he just cant work and that's absolutely fine. Then there's everyone around him helping to make said thing which i dont think most people have.
There's so much effort and research in this video that really makes this a definitive retrospective into Anno's career. My friends have recently gotten into Anno's works and this has helped in consolidating all the major details. Navigating decades of shows and films in and then explaining them in entirely different language is no easy feat.
For me the source document is a gold mine, there's a lot I've never read and wouldn't have if not for this project of yours. Absolutely amazing work dude!
yeah that source doc was a fukcing pain to sort so i hope people go wild because while there are some archives out there they're basically at best done by date (sort of) opposed to by project etc
This is probably going to be the most definitive Anno retrospective for a long while. Seriously, this was such a tremendous effort.
While Anno is associated most popularly with Eva, I'm very happy that there was a sizable amount of this video dedicated to his involvement with Kare Kano, which is something that hasn't been covered to this degree on UA-cam I think.
yeah i very much wanted to clear up the kare kano mishaps which is why i went out of my way to buy the kare kano br scan in every page and then get the major interviews translated to end this weird error of hearsay
@@Stevem That's insane... Thank you! ❤
Are you prepared for your work to become the definitive video on Anno? 😉
I luckily saw EOE in my early 20's. If I had seen that movie when I was a child, I would have been irreparably scarred. I freaked me out to say the least.
I watched Berserk 97 in my early 20s and the way that anime ended still did leave a scar so I understand that statement.
Kids in the 90s would watch Akira, Crying Freeman and End of Evangelion and just go "wow that's so cool" in glee. I know i did!
I watched the movie in my mid-20s, and yup it was still fucked up. I still love it though.
I watched EoE when I was 14. Sure to say. Fucked me up for a week
I am an adult, and the power of the 'Air On a G String' segment with Asuka fighting the mass production models keeps me from rewatching EoE. The emotions I feel from the brilliant combination of the music and animation are intense. That song is almost too powerful on its own, IMO
It’s so crazy just how intensely involved and intense these animators are. Miura, Anno, Miyazaki, Ito, these artists always placed their art so beyond themselves and what is normally physically allotted. Their stories really reflect how much they invest into their art;
Dude literally put his rage, all his depressive thoughts and what he thinks is wrong with humanity into one anime. And it created one of the best anime of all time.
It's honestly insane how much these producers were against this sort of writing and depressive material considering it saved their entire company and maybe even the entire anime industry. The writing, depressive material and the lack of explanations made you question everything and interpret it based on your own feelings and that's exactly why the anime was so f*cking good and still is.
this is a documentary film. There is SO much effort put into this. Custom animations, voice actors for interviews, excellent editing, silky smooth voice (per ushe) and finally, amazing research. Honestly, I can't thank you enough.
Also you work is inspiring to me as a, uh, struggling artist. I just want you to know your work is awesome sir.
i feel the struggle hahah glad you enjoyed, good luck to the future
I have to say man, I admire your work so much, the things that stand out to me are the insane immersion into the absolute molecules of the subject matter you're presenting, the integrity of the presentation in sticking to the researched facts rather than pushing some absurd and completely forced ideas with the sole purpose of proving to the viewer how clever you are (like some of your peers do, unfortunately) and the fluidity of the storytelling. I really hope you'll get the recognition you so clearly deserve. Congratulations!
I mean I kinda don't want to stretch too far about what Anno means here or whatever I have no interest in psycho analysing in that way
Man you're one of the most under appreciated content creator on this platform. Love your work.
Thank you!
this is incredible work. better production than most documentaries i’ve seen, better research… you’ve really met the standards of the subject. congratulations, it’s more than edutaining your commitment is inspirational. hats off
thank you ivan!
the obsession with the concept of "masculinity" (see the popularity of characters in pop culture like Andrew T and the sudden rise in "masculinity" podcasts) in the west is what makes Shinji so important. He portrays the vulnerable side that everybody has to some degree, even if we are too pridefull to accept that. Some people hate Shinji because they hate that part of themself, they might feel exposed.
Also, I suffer from mental illness (I'm medicated; I'm doing fine so far), and I feel that all of Shinji's trauma is easier to understand from that perspective than from someone who is considered "well-adjusted". My brother who does not suffer from mental illness doesn't hate Shinji, but he doesn't understand him as I do.
Yeah Shiniji especially in Japan resonated with a lot of young Japanese kids who felt lost and depression and trauma are totally all over that character, even before the piloting he has some serious baggage with his family
And to be honest asuka rei and misato had the same kind of Human portrayal as shinji ,i never saw the role of conventional femininity in them ,i only perceived broken people
@@Andrea-fd2bw yeah, funny thing that I do see a lot ok Asuka in me, which as a young boy I had never felt identified with a female character.
@@unknownpleasures_nic Asuka's strong desire at a young age to be desired and loved and how she outwardly expressed that resonated with me in a way I had never understood before. Much more did Asuka's behaviour feel like something I related to than Shinji's until I rewatched when I was in a deeply depressive state and felt great resonance with Shinji.
The rise in hyper-masculine culture is a reaction to the increasingly heavy suppression of masculinity in the Western mainstream for the last century, which is being carried out by perverted ideologues, and this is a critically important factor which is dishonest or ignorant to overlook. It isn't about kicking men for having inherent weaknesses, it's about kicking down at the culture of willful weakness.
I was not able to get a sponsor on the video unfortunately, so if anyone would like to see the channel chug along or see the behind the scenes of this video check out my Patreon

Imagine trying to pitch some of the angel designs to toy companies. Ramiel, Matariel and Leliel immediately come to mind.
At least a blue shiny octahedron would be simple to produce...
End of Evangelion is still one of my all time favorite movies. That ending was so depressing yet exhilarating, like holy shit this is something I've never seen before and it's awesome. I can get why some people don't like it, but goddamn watching it back in the day it was the fookin shib.
There's something I've always thought would be hilarious to see which is like one of the first audiences reactions to eoe
They don’t like it because it didn’t end like they wanted to and they felt called out by it.
I generally dislike it due to its messiness and i feel like its pretentious, i do appreciate its message however. The weird pedo shit also just makes me uncomfy
@@diaatlus you’re projecting
@@stranded9225 projecting what? Its possible to just dislike a work 😂 i dont even disagree with its message
I think this is the video I needed right now. Weird how things work out. And it’s a bit frustrating realizing how much my own work has been influenced by EVA. Even if it’s been about a decade since I last watched it
I'm glad there's a dude on the internet this dedicated to Anno and the olden days that are responsible for the passion in the industry. Reminds me what my goal is in a world full of tiring and distractions.
Thank you Stevem for being you.
glad you enjoyed
My favourite footnote in Anno's career is his cameo appearances in Katsuhito Ishii's films, The Taste of Tea and Funky Forest. In the BTS doc for Funky Forest, you can see when Ikki Todoroki first meets Anno. He's a bundle nerves, meeting his hero and scene partner all at once, and gets Anno to sign his copy of Evangelion. Years later, he becomes Anno's personal assistant and is deeply involved with the rebuild films.
Not just that todoroki is now assistant director on Kamen rider he's annos number 2
Btw is there a place to find that BTS doc, there's a lack of ikki footage in this world
@@Stevem It's on the funky forest DVD and bluray releases, but I doubt it exists anywhere online.
@@v1deo_vid darn I'll see if I can get a copy then
@@Stevemit may be on internet archive?
I genuinely struggle to understand how much work was required for you to actually create this video, its been a good while since I have been able to pleasantly watch a 3 hour video without at any moment wanting to divert my eyes from the screen, great work man, keep it coming
about 11 months straight I started working on the video on January 7th and finished the whole thing give or take on December 1st the final month was basically spent animating the finale section and doing a lot of admin stuff like putting the sources on screen checking each section, audio effects on the quote audio etc etc
@@Stevem Well damn, I can only say that it was absolutely worth it, also loved that final animation too.
Exceptionally well done; as someone succinctly stated already; this may well be the best piece of content on Anno I’ve ever seen. Your content on Miyazaki and Ghibli is of the same caliber as well. If one weren’t already a fan of Anno; they would be after seeing this.
I appreciate the nice comments I will probs talk about both those topics again in the future
The Daicon 4 video stunned me and somehow powerfully moved me when I first saw it back in the 90s. It stayed with me all this time. It's something really special.
would have been quite the sight im sure
This has to be the best retrospective I’ve ever watched on UA-cam. The amount of care and effort that must have gone into this is mind-boggling. Thank you for this
damn high praise
I didn't realize it until the end but you didn't start off with a beard that long. this project must have taken you A LONG TIME. good work, sir. Props to keeping at it.
One of the finest filmmaker retrospectives on this platform.
I appreciate the kind comment
This is great, you already know.
Sad that FLCL was glossed over so briefly (I’m still at Kari Kano while writing this)
It’s not anno’s project, but it’s a parody of eva and many other things (you already know) and I would love a dossier like this one for FLCL. I have watched it more than anything else, over 50 times since I first saw it 20 years ago, and still find it fascinating, though that’s probably because it was so formative for me, but also because it’s so dense. No one talks about the original tv airing in Japan, or the VHS release. I wonder if there were other cuts.
Flcl would need its own video as a tsurumaki project it's beyond the bounds if this video, maybe I will one day
@@Stevem I’m surprised no one else has yet. For EVA I’ve been reaching out for an all-encompassing take and just couldn’t find it. Mostly it’s all written in Japanese! There so much to cover I never felt I had a firm grasp on the complete cultural sensation, now I feel a lot more caught up. Thanks!
The way people regard EVA is how I feel about FLCL. I know enough about the production behind the scenes to know that there is so much there I still don’t know. From this video, I learned that prog and/or whatever adult swim was not just a total cringy disgrace I thought it was, but that anno was about to own FLCL, was stabbed in the back and the property was sold to the highest bidder, making it a disgrace on the corporate and production level too. Wow!
FLCL was already perfect end to end, when a part 2 was announced all my red flags went up. Before then I said FLCL was untouchable and a rare case of something that was perfect and never messed up by anyone. Ah well…
@@treefroggy it was not just flcl more so anything, I think flcl was bough by IG and they co produced the original so it's not like they're randos but the funding for the new series came from warner and toonami/adultswim
I don’t know if you need this information but the Hazel FLCL video is quite interesting and has come out since you made this comment.
@@Stevem Anno was deeply involved, he goes uncredited as an actor, as 'the fat cat with massive ...testicles'...
Tsurumaki is the dbag that said Evangelion's religious imagery was not relevant to the themes of 'Artificial Doomsdays'(Cold War Brinksmanship/USA White/Imperial Christianity) of Evangelion.
He's not very good at storytelling...
Anno was also involved in the second half of Gurren Lagann; the insanely heavy/dense/genius half...
Just like the fantastic first half of KareKano!(they fired Anno...)
i’m only halfway through but i’m so glad youtube recommended this to me. absolutely marvelous work. the solid research, the arrangement of the material, the visuals chosen, the editing, all of it is wonderful, but there is undeniably a personal touch to it that speaks of true love for the media, and i just want to bask in that forever.
Wow, thank you!
I've been following Eva since 1997. You have some notes and footage that I did not know of.
Thank you.

Ive cleaned the captions all the way to Nadia
Holy shit, everything about this video is amazing. This is honestly one of my favorite videos on this site! I knew the vague skeleton outline of Anno's career, but your inclusion of the interviews and choices of clips from these shows combines so well with chronicling the history of one of my favorite animators of all time. Easy like and subscribe from me!
thank you for watching!
I can’t believe how you turn out a 3 hour masterpiece like this. I’ll be watching this for days.
Enjoy!
Having actual mental issues is also taboo in the west, its just pretending to have those issues that's trendy in some circles, but ask anyone with actual clinical depression or schizophrenia how supportive their community has been and they'll tell you they are on their own.
That's two different levels, generally people are more open about mental health then they were in the past if there's actual enough government support is another factor of course
You may be allowed to say "I have depression" or "I have anxiety", but you're expected to keep any of all signs of it hidden.
I've been given advice to "have a nice cup of tea and walk around the block once a day" from family - during bipolar depressive phases that were so severe I was intermittently *catatonic*. While I was living with them.
In the US, taking absence for mental illness is usually seen as completely invalid by management, as if they aren't real illnesses.
Anyone publicly referring to having substance dependence disorders are labelled an alcoholic/junkie, their opinions doubtful, and their lives worth less than others. Any other lack of impulse control (gambling addiction etc.) is simply seen as poor self-control.
Having any psychotic symptoms - hallucinations, paranoia, etc. - gets you labelled as crazy and dangerous to others. I don't want to expand on the hate crimes related to this one.
"Narcissist", "psychopath" and "sociopath" are used as insults by nearly everyone and are synonymous with evil. Women with borderline or, to a lesser degree, bipolar disorder are stereotyped as hysterical and dangerous to others.
That's all before we touch on religions persecuting us. Or blaming it for school shootings. And without including developmental differences like ADHD and autism.
It's fair to say that it's less taboo to have some mental illnesses here, for sure - in recent history. For people of Anno's generation, my parents, it was exactly as taboo for them as it was for him. It's the younger generations around the globe that are more open to talking about mental illness, and we're still a generation or two away before it's really no longer taboo to discuss.
Theres a social effect where the group is motivated only as strongly as the least motivated member. So groups inherently feel held back. Like you go to didney wurld, then you cant do anything but others want to enjoy themself and not waste their vacation. Its like that but to a much smaller extent. And those around them shouldn't be forced into an obligation that makes themself worse off either.
Green tea helps with mild anhedonia tho, for me anyways.
@@mimszanadunstedt441 Good to know and if decafinated if also to avoid anxiety and also be careful with the AAVE/African American Vernacular English passed off as slang, as it could be harmful to the black community and even us, too?
I'm on the eva segment (god that Anno eoe0looking avant-garde depression sequence!) and I honestly adore the work you have put into this. Not only an impressive, highly detailed and fact-filed dive into Anno's oeuvre but a historical look into otaku culture in Japan then. A window to the anime industry's turbulent. Mad respect for just the hard-work and research of this. Truly a video essay many anime fans need to see
appreciate the kind comment !
This is a really really great essay. I know a lot of 70s/80s anime history but there's a whole bunch of stuff I still learned here. I REALLY enjoyed how much you talked about the director/producers' relationships with each other across studios, even to the point of juxtaposing clips together to show inspiration (i.e. Nausicaa/Shin Gozilla at 2:46:05 brilliant!)
Thank you for mentioning Daicon IV. I never knew of its existence. "Twilight" is my favorite ELO song, and surprisingly, I only discovered it last year. My mind was blown that that song and "Prologue" were used for Daicon IV. The nostalgic combination of those songs with the animation is just incredible.
I'm simply in awe of the quality end detail of this. It took me almost a week to watch it and I enjoyed every second of it! this is one of my favorite channels!
Been a big fan of eva and always wanted to learn more about the man himself. This documentary has been very insightful and managed to keep me hooked all the way through it's 3 hour runtime! I'm for sure going to check out more of his works now, keep up the great work mate.
Three hours!? Wow, gonna be working my way through this video the next few days. There's nothing I can say that does justice to the amount of work and time you put into this project. I'll make sure to share this around in hopes it gets the recognition and views it deserves!
there's timecodes if you need them
I genuinely laughed @1:02:54 when the gainax reaction to Eva’s finale reception was set over the patriots conspiracy music from MGS2. Bravo

Probably the best video I've ever seen on UA-cam. It gave me a whole new dimension of appreciation for the works of Hideaki Anno and I'll certainly remember it every time I discuss something related to Eva. Your work is simply amazing
Man you did an amazing job made me so emotional throughout. I'm glad to see Eva has impacted others like it has impacted me. Literally saved my life thank you for just making me appreciate the work they do even more!
Wow, that video single-handedly made me appreciate anime a bit more
This is probably one of my favorite videos I’ve ever seen honestly, idk why but it’s just right, great job
Absolutely brilliant! Depth of research completely unexpected. Empathy levels swole. Finishing this up after having watched NGE Rebuild 4 (Shin Eva) in the big screen theater, and I'm deeply moved. Thank you.

At the top center you can see H.ANNO (the Ns are stacked on top of each other).
The mech at the bottom right says "DC IV" and has the Daicon Girl's face on it.
You're really knocking it out of the park with your content, this is basically professional level
there's a handful of people at the top of Anitube and Stevem is consistently at the forefront of those
thank you so much for the great work👍
Thank you 11111
Thank you for this amazing documentary. I'm a new member to the NGE saga, I've literally just scratched the surface of it, and with this insight, I can now understand almost everything. There were some questions about Anno, that I wasn't even sure of what could make sense. Thank you Steve!
This video is like a documentary and an academic paper perfectly merged into one. The sheer amount of research this must have taken is staggering. This was a great film/documentary/video.
You really deserve 3x the credit and attention for all the effort you put into these videos. This style of delivery and presentation is one of the best on YT. It's been awesome seeing your stuff grow and evolve, man. Hope that wrist is doing well!
I can't believe 3 hours of content went by so quick! I like your style of presenting, keep doing this great work!
Finally got to see 3.0+1.0 during the recent screenings in the USA. Good timing sir, and well done. Thank you for the amazing video and sharing your sources!
That was an incredibly informative piece about not just an artist, but what it means to be an artist, and someone in the industry in general. I feel like I've gained a lot of new insight on what they go through in that part of the entertainment world. This was really incredible production and you should be exceedingly proud of how awesome this is because I felt like I just watched something made by an entire Hollywood documentary team.
Mostly just me though haha outside voice over and translation
@@Stevem that's incredible, dude. Love the animations.
Its here…its actually here. Seeing this process over your livestreams and all you’ve been through to make this. Great job!!
Got there eventually
I don't have many things to say that haven't already been said already but this video, this whole project, is a definite masterpiece and the work and effort put into this is more than obvious. Truly an incredible video. As someone who has also sifted through countless interviews with Anno and other people he has worked with I only have a smidgen of understanding of how long collecting all these quotes must of taken, especially trying to understand what people meant. Again, this is a beautiful retrospective on Anno and I hope others see that too :)
I hope a lot of people watch it so it was worth all that time haha thank you for the kind comments though
i loved seeing the journey of them and you as you put countless hours into this video we also see the changes in you physically over these countless hours, in a short and sweet version. GoodJob!
What a wonderful effort this was. So glad I got to watch this.
I’m so thankful I was randomly recommended your Ryo Fukui video all those years ago. Your research and presentation has only improved with every video and I love being able to learn about the minds behind my favorite anime’s.
Just fantastic!
wahay thats going back a bitt
This is an insane amount of work, amazing job
I'm so glad to see how well this turned out. You did such a fantastic job, Steve. I really hope that you'll have some time to give your wrist a break.
I’m so glad you added the Shin Kamen Rider teaser at the end. Admittedly I’m not the most dedicated viewer of yours but I sit down to watch your essays with intention, and I really love all your original animation and drawings. I think you really brought it to a whole new level here. I would too, for a retrospective dedicated to Anno. Thank you so much, for all your hard work. EDIT: I haven’t seen his latest live action stuff yet so I’m holding off on watching Anno Problem part 2.
this is amazing, like its entertaining and so informative, the fact you chose to include a lot of conversations that people had amongst each other really stimulated my ADHD brain, i could probably listen to this Essay 10-100 times over and over again, thanks for this masterpiece
fellow ADHD-er huh
This is phenomenal!!!
So well-researched
Well-paced
Perfectly handled and very atmospheric with your touches.
Thank you for making this and putting so much work into it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It feels illegal to watch such a good video for free. Extremely well done from start to finish. From the animations to the indepth analysis of Hideaki's psyche and even small details like the numbers on the top right corner to keep a sense of which era of time we are on really adds a great touch. The editing, sound design, animation and writing are all 10/10. Thank you for such a detailed video essay.
Forgot to add this, also the part that you grew out your beard the whole video was also a great touch of kind of showing how you also grew as the video kept going but also stated how long it took you to make it in the first place.
What a impressive documentary, The points of view and commentary angles presented in some of video essay you make are much better than some UA-cam channel with a large number of subscribers.
Super proud of ya, Stevem - way to stick it out! Feels like you spent half your life on this documentary!
Maybe of what's left at this rate haha
this was absolutely incredible from the introspective look at his work to the animation effects in the background, this is amazing, well done
thank youuu!
Thanks for so neatly dividing the video into his different works, I just came in for Kare Kano and it was very interesting, maybe I'll be back as I explore his other works.
After rewatching this, i gotta say that this is one of the best videos ever put on this site, amazing work man
Sorry for the late comment but damn this is one of the best content that I've seen in not just your channel but in this side of UA-cam as well. I sincerely hope that Hideaki Anno would warch this video and be proud to not just in your dedication at your work but also be proud that there are people out there that appreciates the work he and his team has created throughout the years.
I’ve been wanting a video just like this for so long. Absolutely excellent work
Glad you liked it!
Wow this was very well produced and entertaining! Im not even an eva/anno fan but I bingewatched the whole video in a day
Man, I'm just 14 mins in and am so overwelmed and hooked already. Incredible work and effort! You deserve every bit of praise.
Props on all the animations you worked on for this video they were amazing, especially the ending bit, I think they really captured Anno's essence from the beginning of his career to now, and probably that overworked exhausted state too. I also love all the extra B roll you scavenged for this, like the daily life footage of 90's to early 2000's Japan, behind the scenes interviews, cells, early animations, and articles!
Congratulations. Now get back to work, you have more essays to make 😈
I am working on a more casual recommendation video hopefully to put out by the end of the month
One of your absolute finest videos yet, thanks so much for your hard work and dedication!
Took long enough haha
yesssss I didn't know how much I needed this video until now will definitely rewatch and go through the sources doc in the future. Wonderful animation work on your part as well :3
Thank you so much for this big documentary covering the work! Especially the older stuff I got an insight I'd never had.
Surprised there was no comment on the abundance of sexualized shots in Shin.
I'm watching this when it has ~42k views and all I can say is this was phenomenal. Like most people, I know of Anno through Eva and while I knew of Kare Kano I had no idea he went on to make live-action films (other than Shin Godzilla). You did an amazing job on this and you should be incredibly proud. You've taken a director that has been part of my life since my early teens and explored his works through the ages and given proper time and respect for all of his works. I am just floored.
what a wonderfully pleasant viewing experience. this was so much fun to watch. the amount of dedication put into the research and composition of this video is baffling. i have soooo much respect for you and your team for crafting such an amazing final product.
You & your team did a great job on this video! Thank you very much for the content 🙏🏾
Really loved this video. It was engaging and entertaining from start to finish which is impressive considering the length. I did wish you'd have talked more about Anno's influences. There were only a few seconds spent on Yamato, and Ideon was mentioned in name, but is very important to Eva and Anno. Still, this is one of the most important videos coming from anime content creators.
It really depends on how many quotes Anno has on those things he usually doesn't go into influence talk specifically unless talking to those people, there are two yamato quotes in this video, the only ideon quote I recall seeing is one where he recommends the movie when talking to tomino he's seemed more on chars counterattack talk and v
Thank you for the passion and hours you poured into this essay, it moved my heart and light up my brain
glad you enjoyed
This without a doubt is one of the most in-depth videos I have ever seen regarding this topic, Even after being an Anno and Eva fan half my life, the sourses you have found and compiled in such a beautifully edited way, its amazing, your channel truly deserves many subs, the amount of work and dedication that went into this is just crazy, tha k you for your service :')
I love this series so much. To have so many crucial voices narrate everything, makes it feel so immersive. These are very beautiful love letters to these artists.
this is beautiful. the visuals and the silent 'blank' parts are tastefully executed.
i never knew i needed this documentary so bad.
chef's kiss all around.
Thank you!
I love that your hair and beard grow out as the video progresses. It serves as a reminder of the passage of time over Anno's career as well as and your personal investment on this project. Bravo!
Yeah I also didn't want to try and match it when I was shooting with months in-between
wow. im only 1h/3 in, but i want to leave a comment in order to boost the video, even though i dont have anything better to say yet. amazing work, thank you for creating this
First time I watch enterely a video this long on YT.
This is so good!
Thank you for your amazing work!
This was amazing holy fuck i respect you so much for compiling all this. Also you look really nice! You earned yourself a sub and also me sharing this video with a bunch of other people, hope this video gets millions of views.
Dude Americans really hated shinji didn't they.
Amazing work, Stevem! Love this format, and the research you poured in this onr
It took me a while to notice the 3 hours on the video but THUMBS UP FOR THAT AWESOME QUALITY WITCH ANIMATIONS AND EVERYTHING, good work !
Absolutely incredible video. Great insight into both Anno and his teams over the years. Gives me an even greater appreciation for all their works.
I always love these animator/studio deep dives that you do, but damn is this one next level! Have you thought about shopping this around to any of the major paid streaming services?
No lol what a legal mess that would be
Simultaneously an intimate portrait of a man and an acknowledgement that he cannot be known solely through quotes and research. A great documentary that the author should be proud of (though I guess Anno would want me to say “work of fiction” instead)! I look forward to your future projects just as I look forward to Anno’s ❤
This essay/journey is impressive. Thank you for such dedication. I feel expanded.
