You can't really do anything to fix those games on a 3:2 screen. The games are stretched with a flattering filter to smooth out the image. A real 4:3 screen will always be the better option. This is beyond the scope of your question, but all the people that cloned the OGA never should have kept the 3:2 screen from the original design from HK. I'm waiting for a Perfect Dark capable handheld, and I know I will be waiting a while longer. But these devices are coming on so fast, and hardly getting that much more expensive, SBCs are one of the most interesting fields in technology lately.
It's a question of price vs performance. If you wanted a device that could do that, it could be made, but it would probably end up running Android and being in the $200 price range, where you could just get a GPD XD+ (or even a Switch Lite), which already fits that description. These devices are for the $100 and under range, so their chips are always gonna be at least a few years old and probably mid-low tier for the time they were released in order to keep battery life long enough.
@@erikd6124 Anbernic doesn't develop much in the way of low-level software for chips, they wait for other people to put out a similar product, then build a higher quality equivalent with the same chips. In the case of the JZ4770 chips used in the RG350/350m/350p/280/280v, they were copying the GCW-Zero firmware developed by the open source OpenDingux community. In the case of these Rockchip RK3326 devices (the RG351 line) they're copying the Odroid Go Advanced firmware and OS distributions made by HardKernel and their open source software community. @@Undercoverfire they at least did some modifications by adding this new 640 480 screen. Is there a newer device out or planed to realise in the near future with a more powerfull chip? @@erikd6124 Most of the similar devices with more powerful chips run Android, which Anbernic doesn't seem to use on any of their devices. For instance, the Powkiddy X18S looks like it will be much more powerful, but it will run Android. Likewise with the KT R1 will use the same chip as the Powkiddy X18S and will also run Android. Whether or not new Linux-based handhelds come out depends on companies that do the actual software development like Hardkernel, and/or on large dedicated niche communities working for long periods of time, like with OpenDingux.
I've been waiting to buy a device and this definitely checks off a lot of the boxes. I think I'll wait a bit longer to see what happens with the community firmware -- I seem to remember the other 351 line systems performing a bit better on some of these games.
You can expect ArkOS and 351ELEC within weeks of the devs getting a hold of the device. Since the chipset is identical, there isn't too much work to get it going.
@@ungratefulmango ArkOS is coming to 351v, dev is waiting for his unit. 351Elec dev has stated he has no interest in the device or porting that OS to it.

Probably the best handheld for its price for a very long time :D Thanks for this review!!! I ordered mine. I'll probably upgrade when these things can play GameCube at full speed and for this price, which will take a very long time!
I came to the same conclusion. This is my first upgrade since the RG280M and I probably won't upgrade again until they can run PSP and N64 on 2x rendering.
I am now the proud owner of a RG351V and I'm having the time of my life despite not being able to play to Parasite Eve 2 & not being able to save in Syphon Filter (I can create my own saves by using the little "f" button & R1 button together anyway, so it's not that big of a problem).
It's always a game of cat-and-mouse with those devices. 350M has a 4:3 screen, but an old chip. 351M has the new chip, but the screen is 3:2. This has the new chip and the 4:3 screen, but a plastic shell, one analog and a vertical arrangement (which I actually like, but I think I'm in the minority on that one, and it seems less pocketable than any of the other handhelds). As much as I'm tempted to buy one of those handhelds, I think I'll hold back a bit more and see what they come up with next. I wish there was either a 351VM with a metal casing and maybe a second analog, or a 351M2 with this screen.

I haven't used this device, but I do own the RG280M which only has 1 stick. The only time I ever wish I had a second stick is for the SM64 port. There are very few PS1 games which actually utilise the second stick. The N64, PSP and Dreamcast only have 1 stick any way, so there isn't much use in having a second stick for those systems.
@@HUYI1 No, Gamecube is out of the question. If you want portable GC emulation, you're best off getting a higher end device. LIKE a GPDXD+ or a portable mini-pc like the Aya Neo.

I will never understand why anyone prefers vertical handheld layouts over horizontal (beyond it being a nostalgia thing, I can understand that), but this is a fine looking device all the same.
Personally I'm a fan of clamshell (still hoping for an SP-style RK3326 handheld), but I think the appeal of the vertical style is mostly because of hand comfort. It just depends on the size/shape of your hands which style appeals more.
@@Undercoverfire comfort is why I have to think that horizontal is overall preferred, as the vertical style of the original GB and GBC was much to cramped with both hands so close and overlapping in the back, just far less comfortable than the amount your hands can breath in typical horizontal layout handhelds.
Yeah I was wondering that too. In Panda Mimi's video, she mentioned that the analogue stick is in a really awkward place. Too low and way too far to the left. Kind of a shame, but still worth it imo
I am waiting until tech improves. I plan to get a handheld emulator when they can emulate Ps1, N64, dreamcast, PSP, atomiswave/naomi and things around that level without much real issue.
I feel the same way. I might try out some simple 2D PSP games, like Loco Roco, Lemmings, etc. but in general, it's not worth playing games if they aren't at least at 95% speed.
I love the V version, it's so small and powerful, I got the P but wanted to get the V as well... kinda hold myself to buy it, although it's nice to have one with ArkOS and another one with ELEC351 2.0
Wow, this dude is rocking the new Anbernic. There, typical comment made :D. Actually looks pretty cool. I'm considering grabbing one of these or the RG351M. Decisions, decisions...
I have a GPD Win 2 and it completely slaughters most of my other handhelds in terms of emulator performance, but I still play on my PlayGo sometimes just because I like how pocketable and light it is. Oh, and having a handheld you're not worried about being stolen is nice too. The Win 2 is my laptop. The PlayGo is my toy.

@@ungratefulmango GameCube? Although I don't think these devices will be running a GC emulator anytime soon
@@HUYI1 No, Gamecube is out of the question. If you want portable GC emulation, you're best off getting a higher end device. LIKE a GPDXD+ or a portable mini-pc like the Aya Neo.
Got an RP2 last year and quite frankly hate the experience of using it. I'll keep watching these videos, but until I see a device that makes some serious strides I think I'm set on this market for a while. In good news tho my poor experience with the RP2 did result in my buying a 3DS and a Vita, both of which I've modded to hell and back and love.
Looks amazing. All we need is a slightly better SoC to get smooth N64 emulation!
I've heard from various sources that this is incapable of playing Space Invaders Atari 2600 version at the highest resolution - are you able to confirm this? I do not wish to make a hasty purchase.
I can confirm it runs fine if you overclock to 4 ghz and also Pacman , Smooth as butter
@@Rick_Todd this is encouraging news
Out of all the reasons to get this I was not expecting Space Invaders to be someone’s reason to buy this
@@modeloman4568 Why not?
@@Cyko.. I suppose becasue it is such a low end game to run, powerwise and emulation wise
Modded PSP/PSVITA are still the kings of portable emulation devices, when it comes to overall price and value.
No.
@@romanparzymieslo9979 yes
@@mauryj.3415 Did you saw the emulation of n64 ? Or n64? And price of vita?? Not even mentioning the cards prices for vita. Show me where you can buy vita for 100$ the new one
@@romanparzymieslo9979 you can easily find a vita for at least $120 on eBay, and vita can play n64 games, a modded PSVITA has SD card support you don't need the proprietary one.
Hey Taki, did I miss it or did you not talk about the thumb stick and what looks like a really uncomfortable position to play in? How is it?
Yeah I was wondering that too. In Panda Mimi's video, she mentioned that the analogue stick is in a really awkward place. Too low and way too far to the left. Kind of a shame, but still worth it imo
Looks like it has potential for sure. Great video.
LET'S GOOOOO, A NEW ADDITION
taki you made me want to buy this because of the suikoden 2 gameplay you showed.
woah wild arms 2 and crash bandicoot, oh the memories, thanks Taki
RG300 for handhelds, NES, light SNES & MD games and PSVita for everything else
it has one joystick
psp made that mistake like 15 years ago
how does this happen again
I am waiting until tech improves.
I plan to get a handheld emulator when they can emulate Ps1, N64, dreamcast, PSP, atomiswave/naomi and things around that level without much real issue.
Man Suikoden 2 such a beautiful game the story line on that one really hooked me
this version with a metallic and screen from 351m would be a instant buy for me
This is screen is better tho?
@@joeysherrett because its smaller, the cpu/gpu works better or the pixels are not so big
That screen looks amazing 👏
I'm not a fan of playing choppy n64/dreamcast/psp so ill be doing psone and under 👍
I feel the same way. I might try out some simple 2D PSP games, like Loco Roco, Lemmings, etc. but in general, it's not worth playing games if they aren't at least at 95% speed.
@@ungratefulmango agreed 👍
I love the V version, it's so small and powerful, I got the P but wanted to get the V as well... kinda hold myself to buy it, although it's nice to have one with ArkOS and another one with ELEC351 2.0
Which one do you prefer?
how well is the rg351v aging now 2 years later? any updates since then? Happy with it 2 years later?
Good form.
I've not had any of the vertical Anbernic models yet. This could be the one to get
Wow, this dude is rocking the new Anbernic.
There, typical comment made :D. Actually looks pretty cool. I'm considering grabbing one of these or the RG351M. Decisions, decisions...
Lol. But nice.
Thank you for this video, well done.
Damn it I already got an anbernic but imma get this one too! Looks lit yo!
You've got an Aya Neo. Surely that's game over for every handheld.
It is also $700-$1000 with the 10% off for backing it in Indiegogo. I do not think that it is a fair comparison.
@MBTM did you type that comment on your $1,000 iPhone 11?
This look sick!!
Amazingly amazing!
Just got update that mine will be finally delivered tomorrow morning..bring it on.
yoo I held off on getting the RG351P in the hopes we'd get a vertical format version! This is my favorite form factor
I want to replay PS1's Chrono Cross. A classic
Perfect screen, now I just want this exact hardware on a RG 350p form.
OMG it’s so expensive here! It costs twice the price of the 351P! 😭
Literally costs the same as a discounted Nintendo Switch Lite!
Really? Why is it so expensive where you live?
@@ungratefulmango i don't know... I just checked it in a popular online shopping app. The sellers are from China so I don't get why it's so expensive.
That anbernic logo on the front is not obnoxious at all.
It really isn't. Idk what the sarcasm is for. It takes me back to the gameboy advance sp or the gameboy color
The lack of 2nd analog stick might be a problem for some ps1 games
Like?
Only fps games
really surprised this isn't available in Adventure Time BMO turquoise
Looks nice but the price is too high.
Agreed. Given the ho-hum specs that are recycled from previous handhelds you'd think the price would be no more than 80 bucks. It's roughly 115 though!
@@GreenScreenBartender ill just buy a psp to emulate
So pumped
Handheld gaming will rule the world one day.
Got this thing to play GBA games and some N64. Also excited to play some Sega and PS1 games too.
i ordered the wood grain one there is something about it that just makes me want it for the retro look :)
HOLY SHIT! IS THAT THE NEW AMBERNIC?
Just ordered one of these… upgrading from my original Pocket-Go 😂
The 320x480 screen of the 351 series really put me off taking the plunge. Now this vertical model has 640x480, how can I resist?
Death to 320x480
@@TakiUdon I got a case for my rg351p. Does this new rg351v come with a case?
they need to upgrade the chip and memory before long
Great video! But I got delivered today and I’m proper stoked with it but it doesn’t have any Mario games nor Wario games! Did I get a dud SD card or do I have to download them??
Portable 3rd Strike is always a good time, imo.
