- Solid 60lb BFT caught on a shimano Terez 80MH and Shimano Tranx 400HG on 50lb braid with 30lb fluoro leader size 4 circle hook on a small sardine fly lined. Drag was losing pressure from overheating and had to pour cold water to cool it down. UNREAL!!! 1hr fight.

"The bicycle parts came through" LOL nice catch man, props to the crew too they had your back the whole way
smozelle82 tomahawk crew does not disappoint!!!👌🏽. Bicycle parts do work 😂
That was frickin awesome!..i felt like I was there..good work bud
The Tranx is a little beast that holds it's own - great video!
That’s super impressive, it took me about 45 min on an avet SX raptor, but a tranx 400 is a whole diff story!
Nice catch ! And one hell of a knot on your lines
Wow man! I watched that whole thing man! Powerful little thing A! Nice catch!
Love hearing the Tranx's drag sream...that Bluefin made that little 400 work!!!
just bought one of those reels awesome vid
sounds painful but you killed it, bro!
Derek H it wore me out. 🤣
Wow!!! Great job man......you really put that Tranx to the test. I did try to land a Bluefin with a Abu Garcia Toro 60, it didn't work out to well for me!!!! LOL
MF Outdoors yeah, these blue fin are possessed!!! 😂
@ MF Outdoors was that the Beast ? I just picked up both The Abu Garcia revo Toro Beast and the Shimano TranX 400
@@omarsoto3797 thats the beast and as much as I hate to admit it I made the wrong choice with the beast.
Thanks for sharing, line capacity did not look like an issue for flyline surface fishing, just drag, so a Penn fathom 15 is only 16oz and has a lever drag, that might be just the ticket.
Big fish for that rig. Good work
WOOOOOOO!!! YESSSS!!!! That was EPIC 💎💎💎💎💎💎💎
what a fight..love the tranx
These reels are hella strong but yeah a 60 lb tuna is no joke, specially bluefin. A guy here in Cali got the washers warped from a 40lb tuna... But I'm thinking he locked the drag and also had been using it a lot. Tranx reels tend to become the one and all tool.
This dude was really smart in how he caught it, it also took an hour...
Yea, lighter drag really means a lot to try and ware the fish out more over a longer period, and that low drag ensures that the line doesn’t snap. Very well fought
awesome fight! I just picked up a tranx 400 hg
Wish it had a bit more drag and drag to levelwind synchronization. A bit nerve racking to watch the guide on left peeling line off the right side of the spool.
"The bicycle parts come through" lmao
😂😂
Was literally read this when he said it. Lmfao😂
Yep shimano plays a big part of bicycle technology and they pass it on down to fishing reels.
Just bought this reel, think I’m just going to use it for stripers and lake fishing. I have other bigger reels for ocean fishes. Nice catch and what a great fish
I use about 9lbs of drag for 30lb test.
What battery/camera do you have? The battery on my Hero 6 would probably die in 50 mins.
Branden's Outdoor Channel Sony action cam.
Well, I'm sold, picking one up on Friday
Joe Roberts Before you do. Check out the Lexa 400HD
Looking at a reel for my jig stick (90j) was wondering if you’d recommend a tranx or a Trinidad?
Richard Pastran it depends what you are fishing for. Smaller grade inshore fish tranx 400. Offshore larger grade would be a larger trini
Great catch buddy! I read the comments and see you were using 30lb leader. How much drag? 8-9 lbs? Tight work.
Lance Clinton originally 8-9lbs but as the reel got super hot it lost pressure and had to give some extra turns. I’d probably say towards the end I was up towards 13-15lbs to finish him
Why not fish him at 20lbs ish?
This reel put out alot of drag
Take a good look- this is what not to do on a charter boat.
But what if the captain told him the tuna are maybe 15-30 pounds and then a tuna bigger than expected takes it
I’m sure everyone on the boat was pumped about the hour wait
Lmao
how would the 300 hold up in the same conditions, I mean it does not have as much line but the same drag but using thinner dia line must work. i have a 58lb braid with the diameter of a 8-10lbs mono or 0.011 inches (0,28mm) thick line
Personally I don’t think it would have held up. That 400 was pushed beyond its limits and it fried the drag pretty bad. The reel got so hot you couldn’t really hold it. The tranx 500 would be the perfect reel for this.
The weak link is star drags. Lever drags are for everything from the troll to iron we took a UC GP900 9E 9’ 30-60 custom mated with an Avet Raptor JX 65lb braid 50lb ShortShot 4 foot leader of 50lb mono vs equal size star drag the loss is 10 feet with a lever drag did the test in SoCal SD Bay Point Loma sport fishing docks set up a grid dock to dock Tady 45L vs JRI-4 7 deckhands 1 capt 2-2nd tickets and we tossed the loss was equal 7-10 foot loss of distance
I would have thought that the line guide would follow the line while its running so that it doesn’t cross and pull sideways like that.
Awesome job bro! Do you thing the lowest gear version would've been better?
HOU'S FISHIN! Actually no! The gear ratio was perfect for this because the fish swam back super fast and I had to grind as fast as I could to keep up with the fish. Check out how fast I had to grind to keep up 🤷🏻♂️
Good job
Toy reels. Nice video. Thanks.
Would you guys recommend high gear or low gear tranx for bottom fishing catfish, but also some muskie fishing? Getting the 400 size, but can't decide on the gear ratio. Mostly fishing big rivers if it makes any difference. Don't want to strain my arms pulling in big baits all day with high gear, but also don't want to wind like a maniac trying to recover a lot of line quickly. Is there really that much torque difference between the two? I can only afford one right now, and it will have to do well in different types of fishing. Thank you and tight lines
Hubert Strzalkowski I would go high. You can always slow down your retrieve if needed. High gear has plenty of power for what your are fishing for. Tight lines!!
Great job ....
All yall Cali folk...
Dirty south love...
Whoooohoooo
Good job and what a solid crew. Surprised that the captain didn't get mad at you for using the bass gear. I would have told the crew to set the drag to around 10 pounds and just tried to horse that fish up. But that is because I can only afford to fish on crowded party boats =(.
Where did you see bass gear. He may have been under equipped but that is most certainly not bass gear. 22lbs of drag and a power handle is nothing I've ever seen in Bassmasters. Lol.
Just busting balls.
The Captain can make suggestions but he cannot tell you what gear you can fish. As long as you keep your fish in front of you and don't cause others to loose their fish it is your choice.
@@walter992 true, but if i was on a party boat waiting for someone with that kind of gear to pull their fish up for an hour+ i would be pretty frustrated
Would the terez 6’6 heavy be able to handle bluefin in this class a little better? Got it on an Avet sx raptor. Thanks! :)
I think it would. On a party boat I prefer longer rods due to the height on the boat and getting around other anglers.
Damn I went on two different fishing trips in the past and never caught anything, this makes feels I’m in the action too lol
Bluefin fishing is rolling the dice. It’s hit or miss. I’ve been on trips where they are boiling all over the boat but they won’t bite a single thing. Then there are times where you can’t keep them off the line. Lol 🤷🏻♂️
I'm trying to go this July 2021, hope i get lucky this time. Its fishing so you never know
I have a Tranx 500 and it literally does everything … When I’m using it I don’t feel outgunned
Hey bro what size line did you put on to your tranx 400? Thanks good luck 07.13.2020
Jong Iglesias 50lb Daiwa j braid x4
@@TheEKIM1976 how long is that?
Rival Ramayoga how long is what?
@@TheEKIM1976 the line
TheEKIM1976 thanks. Good luck 👍
Man he was hoy doging that should of been a 20 min max fight . Hot doged all the way . But nice vid. Hahajaaa
great catch !!! Which boat ?
Gerald Velasco tomahawk
How is that terez rod? I'm looking to match my diawa lexa 400. I really want a rod with a taller 1st guide so the line isn't so close to my hand while fighting fish
sharkbittenjf it’s a great rod. I wouldn’t use the lexa 400 above 40lbs setup. Personal opinion as I have that reel.
@@TheEKIM1976 Do explain why? Your opinion on the lexa400 vs the tranx400, since you have them both.
The Empty Vessel the tranx is smoother and has a much faster drag curve setting compared to the lexa. Lexa is a good reel but, tranx is one step higher in smoothness and the drag. That’s just my personal opinion.
@@TheEKIM1976
Your reply to sharkbitten on the lexa was, "i wouldn't use the lexa400 above 40lb setup". Why is that so? Thought the line capacity is more on the lexa. Drag is higher too. Is it because of the drag curve?
The Empty Vessel the lexa 400 is a not really intended for offshore. You never know what you are going to run into fishing offshore. I’ve had this reel cranked full max drag with some monster fish and it didn’t end up too well. Check out my other videos and you will see what I’m talking about.
Ok, educate me here. I've never caught a big Tuna. That reel has 22 lbs of drag. Can't you use say, a 40 or 50 lb top shot and bottom out the drag if necessary once it's first big run is over and starts to circle/ creep out those 100'+ mid fight runs?
Here’s a lil education crash course for ya. Blue fin tuna are probably the most picky tunas when it comes to getting bit. The problem is you can toss 40-50lb leaders and the bait won’t swim right and never get bit or, down size to smaller diameter line with smaller hooks for a better presentation and get bit. Your idea sounds great but, when the bite is tough you have to down size. I wish it was 40-50lb all day long. 🤣
@@TheEKIM1976 That's exactly what I thought you were going to say. I just couldn't believe that a Tuna down say 80, 100, 150 feet would be sensitive to another 10 or 20 lb line dia. I get it if they're pushing bait to the surface and you're typically hooking them on surface or 10' below. Thanks for the reply. Great video.
@@RH-qk5lt tuna have very good eyesight and the big ones can become kinda smart after some life experience. At least smart enough to know when a bait looks odd.
Tranx HG only has 18# of drag, the power gear has 22# drag
I can imagine how proud your Dad must be...to see his little girl reel in such a big fish
guess that tuna cooked itself ready for sashimi lol
So, how was the water suppose to cool down the reel if it sealed to keep the elements out?
Same way it cools your body without entering your skin. Conduction.
Andres Garcia the reel was so hot it was starting to get uncomfortable. Adding ice cold water really cooled it down and I took a sip to cool me off 😂
frikin cool men ... Didn't think it would handle that Blue fin but its a Shimano the best .... Glad I can use mine with confidence although a stouter rod woulda made that fight a little less time consuming but what do i know ..not much
SMOKED.....
My hands were sweating while watching. Lol what connection knot did you use and hook knot?
A Dela Cruz fg knot to connect braid to fluorocarbon. Uni knot to connect hook.
Badasss
What a fucking boat,nice fish.
Christian Johns tomahawk 🤙🏽👍🏻
His leverwind isn't moving too much
I can't stand the sound when the drag got pull that why i don't like levelwind
I wonder if the conquest 400 could have done this!?
Brad Williams . This was probably the limit for this reel. I won’t try it again. 🤣. Reel got smoked🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Conquest has less drag than tranx, so I would doubt it.
how much of the 50# braid will the tranx hold?
mutton mane I would estimate around an avg of 250-270 yards pending the thickness and how tight you pack it on. I used Daiwa j braid 50lb x4 and I managed around 250 yards which was packed on very tight.
thanks for that info, thinking about getting one for big live baits and for grouper in the shallows, just to switch it up rather than standard conventional reel
mutton mane I would go with tranx 500 if you are going for bigger grouper species.
im only chasing keepers where i live when there in season. not really giants, i have a number of conventional rigs for bigger fish but it is a tough decision between the two...
mutton mane 400 will be fun.
Got a question for you.. I was looking at the 300 today..that's I guess the little brother of the one you got there. Do you think that the 300 will work on 40 pound stripers...without burning the drag up... What do u think
Jerry Newman I think you will be fine with a 300. Stripers don’t make super hard long runs like tuna. I’ve caught a 40plus pounder striper off the surf and I had brought it in few minutes.
@@TheEKIM1976 thank you sir for letting me know..I've been looking at the 300 for a week at Bass pro and I didn't know how strong it was, cause I fish for big striper and I didn't know if that reel would hold up to the fight...but when when I saw you fight that big tuna I figured it stronger than I expected..I'm glad you made that video..thank you for that....have a good day and if you look and if you live anywhere close to Charleston South Carolina stop by shim creek... Get on the thunder star head boat and go get some good eating red snapper...take care and be safe
I believe the only difference in the 300 and 400 is the spool, everything else is the same
one word Tranx 500, 400s are small, smaller gears.
How’s the reel holding up
Perfect. I just won’t be fishing for blue fin with it 🤣
bicycle parts! lmao thats a new one! lolol
Yeehaw !!!!
What’s the lightest thing you could decently cast with the 400? I was thinking of pairing this with a mojo inshore for light jigging, live baiting, and just throwing lures
Lightest I've cast on my 401A is my snag hook - 5/0 VMC 9626 with a half ounce of lead molded to it. Casts pretty well actually with 50# 832.
@@the1stvendetta literally just got the 200, not 30 min ago, got the last one paired with shimano teramar, and it’s one sexy setup
So can it cast lures that are under 1oz? If so, I must have it for my striper/musky setup.
@@JerseyMiller I was casting 1/4oz with a shimano teramar extra fast.
Definitely not the rod for 1/4oz but it worked, mostly on the rods fault.
Assuming you’re talking about the 200
@@fantomphoenix6170I want the 300 for the line capacity.
Watching for the 3rd time 😂
"I hope this thing's not destroyed- It is"
90% of the fishing is done in the reel remember that
Just cause you can doesn't mean you should. Especially open party trips.Level winds are great for yellowtail and smaller tuna. But when the fish are in the 60lbs and above range, don't be that guy. Nothing worse than seeing the school of foaming tuna disappear into the distance Cuase the guy with the calico setup has been hooked up for the last 45min and on his 8th lap around the rail.
Perron...😁😁😁

matheus specht I couldn’t agree more. There was no way I would have brought that fish in on junk gear.
How strong the line that you spooled.?
Roslan Maskadov 50lb braid with 30lb fluorocarbon top shot of 7ft
Should have done 65 braid and 40 top and set drag at 12-15 lbs. and make sure your knot strength is 90% +.
@@Raking222 Wouldn't be able to hold that much line of 65lb on a 400.
Tranx is lite version of shimano saragosa
400 is a Striper swimbait reel. The Tranx 500 would have killed that fish in under 20 minutes.
Bro that's a 40--50 lb. Max
No way that's 60lb. None the less nice fight & catch. 🤙
Some think it’s fun to fight big fish under gear, I don’t. Too much work, time and stress.
great fight from the fish...too bad it could not be released.
Released ? 😂
So, did you destroy the reel?
pan8a no. The drag was over heated and needed to be cooled off. Shimano Tranx 400 is a solid reel!
Nice fish. But, No way its a 60lb fish.
Sinkos 619 probably way over, huh
Totally agree. Looked 40-45
I was thinking 30-40 max. Just had a few 60 lbers processed at Five Star and they were a lot bigger than that.

Wrong gear for that grade of fish. It’s like butchering a cow with a steak knife.
If I was the hand on that boat I would cut your line right in front of u. By by not fair to other guys on boat putting up with that
