These guys have been doing this since the 60s, known 1st as the classics IV, then as Dennis Yost and the classics IV. Dennis went solo, these they emerged as ARS..
I discovered The Little River Band, The Amazing Rhythm Aces and the Atlanta Rhythm Section all in the space of about 3 weeks in the 70's. My cup runneth over!!
Gentlemen it certainly sucks getting old, im about 67 years old, and my body aches, and nothing works anymore, but damned if i didn't listen to and witness the best music ever in the 60s, 70s and 80s. We were blessed with about a million of the best musical artists ever to grace this planet, we listened every day when these songs were brand new, so this old boy can't get no satisfaction listening to the lackluster, computer contrived bullshit that pains my ears these days. I got to look into the past to enjoy real music.
Other bands in this groove: Average White Band, Pablo Cruise, Little River Band, Climax Blues Band, Firefall, Orleans, Ambrosia, or The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. All of them had some GREAT songs that just made those years GROOVE!
@@jasonhardison7103 I thought about them, actually, but then I didn't include them because they weren't really in the same kind of R&B/funk vein as the others, but more country-rock. Vince Gill had a great voice when with them, though.
Oh man, does that bring back great memories! This song was played at our 9th grade year-end party. A girl who I had had a crush on all year but was too shy to say anything asked me to dance. We ended up dancing to several songs and had a great night. One of those youthful moments you never forget! I moved away that summer, and that dance was the last time I ever saw the girl. Even now, almost 50 years later, I think of that night whenever I hear this song. A+ indeed!
I’m 54 now and grew up in the 70’s with very cool, music and dancing loving parents. Music played in our house every day. This song brings back tons of great memories for me of my dad (passed away in 2018) teaching me how to dance to this song. I’ve always loved it. Atlanta Rhythm Section has had two singers alternating over the years. One would leave to pursue other interests and the other would step in. Both had great voices. The singer here and throughout the 70’s was Ronnie Hammond. I liked his voice best. Sadly he died of a heart attack in his drs office in 2011 aged just 60. The bass player Paul Goddard died in 2014. The loss of these two was the end of what was a truly magical sound. I believe the remaining living members still tour with new members but they don’t peg the sound like Ronnie did here in this song. I love music so much and it kills me that so many of the greats are getting really old and passing away. Music today can’t hold a candle to true musicians with amazing talent like these guys had! Thanks for reacting to it. I knew you’d love it. It’s simple but powerful!
A&A - Happy from head to toe 😉that you covered ARS and so sorry i missed Spooky on a live broadcast.... i can't pick a favorite because their music is timeless and transports any of us who heard in real-time back to the 70's - a real blessing! ARS is such an underrated band from that time and I can't wait to hear your first reviews of other ARS hits !!! Love you both!!! 💞💞💞💞
I went to school with the bass player, Paul Goddard, from the 6th grade through high school. He was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He showed me the guitar cords to a simple song that I wanted to play. I asked him if he could just play anything and he said he could play anything he could whistle.
Band was in our town for 2 days and they stopped in to my restaurant for a meal. They were so nice and returned after the show for another meal. We were just a chain restaurant but they said they didn't take chances on the road because they didn't want to get food poisoning so they stuck with places they could count on. They treated my staff very well and good tips even from the support\advance crew. We stayed open late just for them.
JR Cobb was a member of the Classics IV, before being a founding member of ARS. During 1967 thr Classics IV had a top 3 hit with the song “Spooky”. ARS released a cover of “Spooky” in 1979.
Very fortunate to have lived during the decades of such gritty, iconic, pure, raw talented musicians! 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were EVERYTHING! Still rocking out at 62 and louder than ever!😂 We have great neighbors! Music every day, inside, outside, in the vehicle and anywhere u can think of! PURE MAGIC came out of those decades!

This song is headphone candy, and sometimes I catch new intricate surprises, even after decades of listening to it. The tune was released when I was five years old, and I remember hearing it for the first time sitting in the back seat of a '75 Pontiac, unbuckled and unable to see above the inner door panels or to the windows. So, my first memory of this song was the interior of a car. We Gen-X'ers turned out just fine.

Back in 1977 or 78...Christmas after this album debuted. My older sister and her husband bought this album for me. I was around 14 or 15 and all they really knew about me was that unlike most girls, I wasn't into disco...lol. I had heard the song a few times on the radio, but I don't think I ever had heard it all the way through. I was really impressed with the music. It wasn't quite like the rock music I was more interested in, but it still enjoyed the album., I liked the smooth melody and the vocals. I still have the album.

Just think, this wonderful groove, excellent in tune vocals and the all important "schmear" factor WRT the mix was brought to us by 1970s analog technology and PURE TALENT!
"Baby Come Back" by Player is in a similar pocket. I can almost promise that you have heard a portion of the hook somewhere before, but it is an incredibly nuanced tune that is worthy of a spin!
Came to this a bit late, but so glad to hear it! ARS is so smooth, so many great songs. If it hasn't been suggested yet, I would love to hear you review "Spooky".
Saw a lot of great bands in the late 70s. One of the best concerts I saw was ARS with the opening act being, Wet Willie. WW set the place on fire. I figured ARS was gonna have a hard time following those guys, but I was wrong. They blew the place up. Those guys could jam. Especially the two guitar players. Some of the most tasteful guitar playing I've ever heard.
Atlanta River Band was my first concert. I was 13, some older kids let me tag along. It was at Barn Hill Arena in Fayetteville AR. They were awesome. Everything was being passed from down the isles. Everyone having a great time while completely chill.
I discovered so many great American artists and bands such as these guys by listening to The American Chart Show on British radio. You have to understand that some of these guys were from the Classics IV and The Candymen. The song writer and producer Buddy Buie wrote Spooky, Stormy, and Traces. This was a great outfit.
Attended the Champaign Jam in Hialeah Florida in the mid 70s. They were the headliner and final band of an all day outdoor concert. Champaign Jam being one of there most popular songs... Another good song, Not gonna let it bother me tonight
I attended the Champagne Jam in Atlanta in 78. Eddie Money, Molly Hatchet, Mother's Finest, Blackfoot, Wet Willie, and ARS. Fucking awesome all day outdoor concert at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Best concert of my life. And I got pregnant with my first child that weekend.
ARS and Little Feat, both are so damn underrated. They both JAM out and have so many good songs. Get any live recording of Little Feat in the early days and you will not be disappointed.
My oldest son was Feat's guitar tech for about 10 years, he left not long after Paul Barrere died. I have autographed pictures and posters all over my house. Never imagined one of my kids would do such a thing, after I grew up on Feat's music. 😊✌️
The one and only time I saw ARS was in 1979, my first concert, at the Providence Civic Center with Foghat, Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow and Sweet. It was called Summer Jam 79. You think they would have been the odd man out in that lineup but I can say they totally rocked the house. Just fantastic band and show!
Thanks. Finally. Basically a bunch of really talented studio musicians who decided to form a band. Musically very listenable. And such great lyrics to all their songs. Try others like Dog Days, Champagne Jam, Imaginary Lover, All Night Rain, Jukin' , Back Against The Wall, and more.
Crossover hit, maybe? I just remember hearing this everywhere! It has a great mix of funk and . . . coolness? It's something that could only come out in the 70's!
I was about 13 yo in 1976 and in the 8th grade in Jr high school (aka “middle” school), but I didn’t discover this song until about 1-3 yrs later. So good! A timeless classic!

@@marielaveau5321 That is awesome!! I bet he has plenty of stories to tell.
It has a longer ending...I think you listened to the shorter version, but it's a great tune no matter what!
So glad you appreciate this amazing 70s classic groove! Love how the vocals were recorded! Imaginary Lover is a must listen too!
One of my all time favorites, dude A- you gotta be kidding. This song is so well put together, great vocals, and lead guitar at the end is just nuts.
Tasty songs of the 70s. Man, this brings back some memories! Very underrated band.
So much musical talent in a band
= ARS= Great Band.
One of my favorite bands from high school! '70s had the best music
woooooooooooo! thank you again! everything about this song was so amazing! one of the reasons we could not stop making babies back then!
Thanks.
Ah, the long version! (They used to cut this to ribbons on the radio and I never had the album...) So so good!
So cool to see a whole new generation discovering great songs that I've been listening to for decades. Great reactions as usual, guys.
I was about 13 yo in 1976 and in the 8th grade in Jr high school (aka “middle” school), but I didn’t discover this song until about 1-3 yrs later. So good!
A timeless classic!
