Yup, exactly!!! Real life story here. I’m 43 now, but when I was a little kid my father owned a metal fabrication shop outside of Philadelphia, Pa. One of his close buddies was a former NFL linebacker for the Green Bay Packers. He was 6 ft 6” and close to 400 lbs of solid muscle. Dude was a nice guy but had a mean streak in him when he got mad. I was about 7 years old at home one night when my dad and 4 of his buddies went out to a local bar to get some drinks together. A couple of college aged kids were drunk and decided to pick a fight with the 400 lbs lineman guy along with my dad (who was a beast of a man in his prime years) and the rest of the crew. Long story short, the three college kids got beat up so bad that each one of them had to spend multiple days in the ICU in Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. My mother got a phone from the Pa State Police informing her that her husband (my father) got arrested, along with his buddies and were in the county lockup for the night. The next day my mother bailed my father out and then he bailed his buddies out once he was out. I don’t remember all the details about what happened or how it went down, but charges were later dropped against my father and his buddies because the college kids were drunk and initiated the fight. Later on when I got into my teenage years my father sat me down one night at home and told me some truths about life. I remember this line he said; “son, don’t be stupid around people you don’t know and never insult a group of grown men you don’t know!” “And if you go out, always watch your back and if a fight breaks out keep your back to the wall!” I’ve always remembered those words from him. My father passed away 3 years ago from a heart attack at 72. He was one hard man in his prime, and he cared a lot for his family. And so did the former lineman although I haven’t heard anything about him for years.

I agree I don't think anyone would be comfortable with a killer and former woman beater to be around their mom. Imo Jody was valid about how felt about Melvin
She used Jody for validation and protection then when a new man shows up that can provide even more, THEN she starts to have a issue with Jody being there. She hindered him so she can feel safe and then throw him away when its not needed anymore

Melvin was in the wrong here though. Jody had a right to get mad about being accused for something he didn’t do. He got madder because he realized she was gonna choose Melvin over him 😂
I had a sudden realization, this scene is where Melvin fights his past self. He's an ex con close to 50 and sees the same lazy, aimless young man in Jody that eventually led to him being incarcerated. He desperately wants to make Jody understand where his life is headed but doesn't know how, tempers run hot and any little argument could have set this fight off.
But it’s clear Melvin was a lot tougher as a young man. He can run a business outside of prison, if Jody doesn’t change, he’ll be aimless for his whole life.

"Thats right boy, call for your momma". Always made me laugh. Melvin understood he needed to put Jody in his place acting like a baby boy (que credits) and needed to grow up. The crazy part is Jody was actually right in this situation. Juanita immediately blamed him, yelled and cussed him out and when she found out Jody didn’t have anything to do with it, she didn’t even apologize. I know Jody is immature overall, but he had a right to be a little upset over being accused of something he didn’t do and then not even get a “I’m sorry.” He lost the battle however by getting emotional over Melvin not receiving the same response because he failed to realize unlike himself, Melvin didn’t try to make excuses for his faults or short comings, he simply owned up to it apologized like a man should. Few other comments also pointed out, the stare wasn’t meant to antagonize Jody but to teach him how a man handles things, he was just too emotional to listen at that time.
@@user-iq7cu5tq3h Yep. The movie's called "Baby Boy", but Jody acts a lot more like an angry, immature woman. Antagonizing, disrespectful, loud, etc.-because he's never had to face consequences of acting that way. Melvin gives him some consequences-and ultimately helps fuel his growth as a man. When you look at Juanita's various faults, she's the root cause of why Jody's the way he is. In his own way, Melvin's a father figure Jody never had.

Such a great well written scene. It’s hard to decide who’s the bad and good guy here because everyone has fault in someway. John Singleton hit one out of the park with this one.
Perfectly said. Everybody in this scene has some fault. Baby Boy is spoiled and lazy and needs to step his game up. But his mama is kinda wrong for choosing some street nigga who smashing her over her own son. You NEVER let someone from the outside interfere with your family dynamics. And Melvin is overstepping by imposing his dominance over someone else's home and family.
@Deephouse Gent Only thing is; "spoiled and lazy" is an outcome/result, of how his Mom raisws him... In somebody 18/19 (can't remember his character age ?)
I watch this clip and I realize Jodi was the person if foul. Because his mother and Melvin squashed the situation about the weed as he should have done... Just because his mom decided not to argue with Melvin in front of Jody doesn't mean she didn't have choice words for him, which was none of jody's business. Everything Melvin Said about Jodi was correct;Jody just didn't like it. Jody approach town threatening to shoot him, They had told him he needed to move. Melvin only blue the kiss because he didn't think Jody would call his bluff. He did but it didn't go well for Jody

@@1990mamani disagree. I think in the larger context they all have good points but in the actual scene. Jody is actually the one who is in the right. His mother accused him of basically committing a crime then was completely ok with melvin actually doing it. Then melvin provoked jodi and jodi was right it actually is his house as well. If the mom wanted him to do all that extra stuff she should’ve raised him differently and asked. Calling him out on it in that moment was just a deflection from her poor decision making and melvin shouldnt be allowed to stay he handle everything about this situation wrong including the whole reason why it started. Also jodi was actually just trying to leave which is actually the right thing to do to deescalate the situation and wasnt allowed to and was unfairly put into that position by him and her. The mom is defending a man who’s literally saying he’s going to kill her child. When melvin is crying afterwards about fucking up that because only at that point did he realize it was all his fault. Only in the larger context did Jodi indeed have to grow up. But all that had nothing to do with accusing him of planting weed and egging him on to fight. @ thats not her husband. And the problem is he’s not kid. Jody in this movie is grown man. Who another grown man violated his homestead by planting drugs. Jody is not tactful that doesnt mean he’s wrong. You getting caught up in the emotions of their fight. If you step back you would see Jody simply could’ve called cops. And once again the problem lies in the fact that the mom has poorly defined how her household should be run. And honestly anywhere but the hood would be considered to have chosen a man poorly. She has Jody as the man of the house and now when something like this pops up she expects him to know that the dynamic has shifted without telling him. Jody was right. That man should’ve not been in that house after that based on nothing else but his actions and judgement. The mom desperately needing D dont change that. Once again it her poorly managing her household. And setting a bad example.

“Deal with him before I kill him!!!” That’s a powerful line right there.

Just because his mom decided not to argue with Melvin in front of Jody doesn't mean she didn't have choice words for him, which was none of jody's business.
They should have said that to him at a more appropriate time.
@@iamrysheemchill baby boy, jody wasn’t in the right. If I do something wrong you think my wife is suppose to scold me like she would one of the kids (if she believed they did it initially)? That’s between that woman n her man; jody should have stayed out of it when Melvin took accountability & apologized. & what Melvin was saying was real 💩 that Jody needed to hear. He got upset n put hands on that man first
@ thats not her husband.
Holiday Heart got a mean right hook that would make Madea blush
Melvin punch the mess out of Jody
Melvin emotionally crying while jody fixing is jaw😂😂😂
Right 😂😂😂😂
@@nicholaswatts966 When dad tells you he's gonna "Knock the black off of you" this is what he means.
Melvin: Deal with him before I kill him
The Mama: rushes to deal with him lol
The way AJ Johnson flew in that tree had me weak like girl you did not get pushed 😂😂
😅😅😅
Bruh had on the jumpsuit, highwatered with black boots on, grey thermo underneath, bald head, smoking a black and mild.... Leave sir alone, you don't want that smoke. There is a difference between a brotha that gives a shih and one that doesn't give a fuhh.. Jody you found out. Great scene btw... I was crying when She asked Melvin what he was thinking, Jody said "he was thinking about blazing!" hahaha, Perfect screenplay and perfect acting! Ving Rhames really took it to the next level, ngl he had me shook as a kid when I first saw this movie: you could sense he was feral lion trying to live among men peaceably, but such natures can not be truly suppressed, they can only be monitored continually.
I ain’t gone lie. Jody wasn’t the only one that was wrong in this situation.
How Was Jody Wrong Period?
Actually the writer wrote it for all 3 of them to be wrong and have some bad influence in this scene. Melvin was wrong for growing weed in her garden, Jody was wrong for being a grown ass Man playing like he 17 and Momma was wrong for not standing her ground on both them.
@@TeW33zy I was just about to say that too 😂
@@albertcoachman9078 well for one, he's a grown ass man living with his mom, trying to claim a home that he doesn't put in on, Melvin at the least cooks for her, and probably pays into the house. He also tried to manipulate his mom against Melvin with his Oedipus Complex, and even threatened to kill him after he got told the truth about himself
I mean, Melvin wasn't wrong, if he can get away with it... When you're putting the dick down and taking care of business, you can get away with extra shit.
One of the best scenes in an extremely underrated movie.
My favorite was when Melvin snuck up on Jody (after Jody was sure he put Melvin in-check), and Melvin put that "python" around Jody's neck and proceeds to have a heart-to-heart with Jody while squeezing the tears out of Jody's eyes.
That scene screamed, "Game over...Checkmate Bitch!
Then asked him if he wanted sum from the store 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@jamaltaylor5 that was too funny🤣😂
🤣That's my scene, too! Melvin called him a "chocolate bitch" & licked him on his head😂😂😂
@@jamaltaylor5 , the disrespect 😂😂😂😂
@jamaltaylor5 Right. And then he asked him all nonchalant at that like nothing aint just happened. Like Jody was really gonna say, "Oh yea, can you bring me back a soda? Preciate it."
“No little niqqa you could never be like me”😂😭😭 his voice got so deep
I had to come here after the Tyrese interview with Gillie & Wallo.
I bust out laughing every time Melvin hit his ass. Jody was seeing stars.
One of my favorite parts and when he choked him out wit those biceps. Man I used to HATE Tyrese
@@valentinek.t3327 Hahah Facts!!!
😂😂😂
IRL he'd be picking up his teeth from the floor as if he was playing dice. A punch like that will make you wander around the shadow realm for a couple of minutes for real, both arms up in the air and toes all curled.
The part where he says this is my house too. The facial expression is like I just run out of logical shit to say so I’m going to act like I’m winning this argument. Lmao
In the movie, didn’t Jodie’s grandma leave the house to him and his mom? I haven’t seen Baby Boy in years, but I thought that was in there
@@jasonlehew1462 yea, but he doesn't invest into keeping the home though, his mom is doing all that
@@jasonlehew1462 he said you didn’t leave the nest. This is grandma house when they was arguing.
LMFAOOOOO the way she threw Jody down after Melvin said he was gonna leave Took Me Tf Out 😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love how his whole attitude changed when Melvin said he was leaving lmfao 😂😂😂😂
Everybody blaming the mom that’s a grown man with two babymoms
And who raised him? Right.
@@Seth80HDAnd who didn’t help raise him? Again, he’s a grown ass man with 2 kids it’s time to act accordingly. You can only blame your parents for so long.
True Story
I would never forget watching at the Cinema back in 2001 when the Bass BOOMED after that Punch throughout the theater!😂😂
Tyrese doesn't get enough credit for this movie. A truly unforgettable performance👍
Bro didn't break eye contact with Jodi while slobbing his mom down that always kills me💀💀
This scene is so good. Everyone’s acting is just top notch
