At the weigh in, held in Detroit's Hart Plaza, about noon, Cuevas came in with a little Mexican band, that played music. As Pipino was weighing in the the band played on, Tommy grabs the mike and says "The only belt you are going to leave Detroit with, is the one holding up your pants"! And I was at a party with my parents playing music for them from the radio, and the announcer comes on and gives the announcement. I gave it, and it STOPPED THE PARTY! But the true greatness of those men back then, is that even after the brutal defeat, HEARNS AND CUEVAS became friends, and was even invited to have dinner at Cuevas home years later! And that was the FIRST FIGHT ever held in the Joe Louis Arena, and ironically Thomas the Hitman Hearns, ended his boxing career in that same arena, in a upset, injury filled fight, that some bum won, due to a broken ankle of the Hitman! IT WAS A NEAR RIOT, complete with thrown shoes and cell phones. NO MEDIA, has ever reported that, but I WAS THERE to see it and get trapped in it! WHAT AN ERA!
Hearns was 6'1", 147. This was back when fighters weighed in two hours before the fight, they didn’t rehydrate up 15 or more pounds. I can't imagine what Hearns had to do to make 147.
It's not the length that's as much the issue it's the speed and power. I'm sure the champ had faces a a taller fighter before but there's only one Thomas Hearns
True about the weight. Actually, I wonder what would happen if Hearns boxed conservatively for the WHOLE fight. At times, he tried going for the KO, expending energy, and at other times, making the fight slow with jabs. Hearns-Robinson at 154 would be something to see!
@@markherring3513just one fight, Hearns moved up several weight classes and won BELTS/TITLES. In fact, I think it was 5 weight classes he won Titles, and, I believe the first to ever do that.. in spite of Hearns broken right hand, Hagler still looked like he had been in a fight

8 Years Later when Hearns finally did land the right hand solid, he put SRL down twice. But SRL wasn't hurt in the 3rd or 11th as he was in the 7th in the 2nd fight. Hearns had SRL in serious trouble in that round and got a little too wild and it might have cost him a victory. Oddly enough the punch that hurt SRL, was a left hook. That rd should have been score 10-8 in Hearns favor. Just like the 5th and 12th for SRL. Larry Merchant said it, this is the most trouble I've ever seen SRL in.
@@richardrobinson1697 Arguello was my man but too slow for Mayweather. Cuevas won the welter title with a 2nd rd ko. Then he won 11 of 12 defenses by KO or stoppage. Based on that resume and history he should have come at Hearns banging instead he tried moving away and boxing the worst possible strategy. I guess he was beat before he entered the ring. We could also ask why Cuevas who was champion was fighting Hearns in Detroit. That was a mistake also.
@CARL MOBLEY People who have never laced up the gloves, see boxing in their image. You go out and fight! Simple. Mayweather is a master of the science of boxing and with all that natural talent, he can maximize his efforts and minimize his risks. Not many boxers can do that. If he had the power of a big time hitter, say Hearns or even Leonard, he would have been outrageous and he would have taken more risks because even boxers like to smash their opponents. He didn't have that but he had so much speed, agility, quickness and boxing skill that he didn't need it to beat just about anybody from any period in boxing. No, I'm not one of those Mayweather boxing fan but I'm a student of the sweet science and I know a brilliant boxer when I see one and Mayweather it that guy which is why he's undefeated
When Hearns hit Cuevas, it was like the old line from Cedric the Entertainer on being hit like that. "DON'T PLAY WITH MATCHES", and then he wobbled around, and found out how many people were excited to see him about to go down. Then the BOOMING right hand, and Cuevas found out how many lights hung above the ring of the Joe Louis Arena's boxing ring!

Tommy Herns was a freak of nature, 6 feet 2 inches tall at 147 lbs, and hit like a light- heavyweight. Let us put this in perspective, Mike Tyson and Rocky Marciano were around 5' - 11" tall and they both were Heavyweights.
When Hearns measured him by putting his left hand on Cuevas’ head, you could see that big right hand coming. Tommy wasn’t afraid to let it fly. What a weapon….
I think Thomas Hearns is the most underrated boxer. His two losses in his heyday were the two greatest fights. His first loss against Leonard, the ref stopped it too quick. Loss against Hagler was an all out war.

That was the second time An American Fighter won a Title Fight in his hometown on that day. Earlier, Aaron Pryor defeated Antonio Cervantes for the Junior Welterweight Championship in his hometown of Cincinnati, the fight took place at Riverfront Stadium.
Thomas Hearns was a great champion who was also lucky to have the body type he had. Against smaller guys like Pipino, Duran, Benitez, etc. Hearns had a big advantage, and as a great champion, he knew how to use his size and reach. However, when Hearns fought bigger guys like Barkley and Marvin Haggler, he got knock out cold...
No one before or since Hearns jabbed better than Hearns. Hitman is genius nickname for that jab shoots out machine like. I also love how efficiently he switches the jab into a hook.
@MisterNifty Well, Hearns won Leonard 2. He made the opponents scared because of the right, so he could keep using the reach. And that 'flicker' jab is hard to slip and duck. Remember, Hearns' reach is good so an overhand right might not make it close enough.
The fact that Sugar Ray Leonard had two judges score the second fight a draw and give him a decision was criminal. Leonard did nothing except try to steal rounds like he did against Hagler. Thomas should have went over there and given the two judges a right hand for good measure. The worst decision I've ever seen other than Larry Holmes vs Michael Spinks II
Cuevas has one of the most peculiar records I have ever seen. He was 15-6 going into his world title fight with Angel Espada. After winning the title he went 12-0 before losing to Hearns which his record then went to 8-8. His championship years are something of an anomaly going on his win to loss ratios before and after winning the title.
I watched this fight live via satellite on big screens at, if I recall correctly, the Los Angeles Forum. The place was packed when a friend and I got there and we got nosebleed seats, but it really didn't matter because the fight was being shown on giant screens hanging from the ceiling. I swear this is true, when we got inside everyone there was either Black or Mexican. The guy I was with is Japanese and I'm a blonde and very white guy. We didn't see anyone else there who was white or Japanese. Soon as we sat down both the Blacks and the Mexicans started asking us if we wanted to bet, I mean we were getting bombarded with offers, but we both declined them all. When that first bell rang the place erupted in cheers and yelling for either Hearns or Cuevas. By the end of the 1st round the Blacks were dancing and yelling and the Mexicans were kind of stunned and silent. My and my buddy looked at each other wide eyed because we knew shit was about to get ugly. It was already clear to us Pipino was no match for Tommy. When the 2nd round started everyone was on their feet again and screaming for their guy. Pipino came out looking pretty good but Tommy was looking mean... really mean. By the end of the 1st minute the Mexicans had all quieted down again and the Blacks were on their feet screaming for Tommy, and just a few seconds later Tommy landed that KO punch and Pipino hit the canvas and then entire place was silent for a handful of seconds. Everyone was truly in shock. No one expected that to happen so fast. And then the Blacks roared when the fight was stopped and started giving the Mexicans shit, laughing at them and making fun of Pipino, and they didn't like that. Me and my buddy both looked at each other and said at the very same time "We gotta get outta here!", and we did. As we were leaving a big riot was just starting up. On the drive back to "The Valley" we heard on the radio that it turned into a huge brawl with lots injuries and some arrests made and that several people had been shot and stabbed and at least one was dead. I haven't seen or even heard of anything like it since then, but I swear that's all true.

@@lucioagelvis2134 Duran fought hearns at 154 not 147. People think they know boxing but they dont
And nice to see the legendary, wrestling and boxing announcer, Jimmy Lennon Sr. 🎙️
Hearns was excellent but Robinson was PERFECTION.
If you cant back Tommy Hearns up, youre in BIG trouble.
Tommy is my favorite boxer of all time.
Really cuevas looked intimidated in this fight.
Can you blame him?
He was winging some rights. Wouldn’t go that far
First Take brought me here. "Swayed like a building"
Yup 😂
Here from First Take. Didn't disappoint.
Excellent point of views from both of you.
Didnt he move up to fight Hagler? We all seen how that went.
@@anthonyrobinson973 I wasnt taking anything away from hearns...that fight was one for the ages...both guys won imo thats how great it was..but damn, that knock out punch was maybe the most perfect punch ever thrown.
Never saw this till now..Wow...just WOW !!!!
Hearns honours his nick name "cobra from Detroit " what a demolition punchs!
Too bad we don't see anymore fights in 15' rings.
Instead we get big rings, track meets & boring fights.
Boring expensive fights.
and by expensive I mean PPV. What a ripoff many of these 2008-onwards fights have been. I've been watching fights since the late 60's early 70's.
Great commentary for this one
Cuevas’ corner save his life.
Until he fought Terry Norris, who spanked the sweetness right outta Sugars ASS!!!
I think Hearns would've taken Mayweather.
george hlinko As do I
Me too
NO DOUBT! LEONARD, PRYOR, DURAN, ARGUELLO, EVEN BOOM BOOM WOULD HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM FOR THE ROAD RUNNER!🥊🥊🥊
I do to. It might go to the late rounds, but I think he'd stop Mayweather.
@@richardrobinson1697 Arguello was my man but too slow for Mayweather. Leonard and Mayweather interesting fight (Benetiz gave Leonard big problems); Duran (had trouble with speed a la SRL); Boom Boom would have been destroyed. Mayweather may be a bitter pill for casual boxing fans, but the boxing community know what that kid has
Pipino started The Matrix dance
Cuevas won the welter title with a 2nd rd ko. Then he won 11 of 12 defenses by KO or stoppage.
Based on that resume and history he should have come at Hearns banging instead he tried moving away and boxing the worst possible strategy. I guess he was beat before he entered the ring.
We could also ask why Cuevas who was champion was fighting Hearns in Detroit. That was a mistake also.
The great Pipino got a taste of his own medicine.
That was a true Champion that Tommy took out in 2!
Duran too!
@@sparringsessionswithkonnor4366 Yep . Watched that 1 the other day .
The hitman was my fav..
For me tomy hearns is the bether boxing of the history.
Mayweather has never, and will never fight someone like Hearns. Fortunately for him.
I think Cuevas found out what kind of detergent the custodian used to clean the mat, maybe a hint of pine sol.
Tommy Herns was a freak of nature, 6 feet 2 inches tall at 147 lbs, and hit like a light- heavyweight. Let us put this in perspective, Mike Tyson and Rocky Marciano were around 5' - 11" tall and they both were Heavyweights.
Simplemente no tenía ninguna posibilidad, pipino Cuevas.
Guys like Cuevas and Duran had no chance against Hearns
Cuevas a real brave fighter
Beside the main event, undercards are pretty good too. Serrano, Hilmer Kenty and Ernie Shaver.
freaking a young Murad Muhammad in dark glasses at ringside

When Hearns measured him by putting his left hand on Cuevas’ head, you could see that big right hand coming. Tommy wasn’t afraid to let it fly.
What a weapon….
You're absolutely correct. I don't know why but I was thinking of someone else.
I think Thomas Hearns is the most underrated boxer. His two losses in his heyday were the two greatest fights. His first loss against Leonard, the ref stopped it too quick. Loss against Hagler was an all out war.
Too quick? If it continued hearns would be dead.
@@motorcitycobra8875SRL would have iced him. He was done.

That was the second time An American Fighter won a Title Fight in his hometown on that day. Earlier, Aaron Pryor defeated Antonio Cervantes for the Junior Welterweight Championship in his hometown of Cincinnati, the fight took place at Riverfront Stadium.
I remember that Hearns-Cuevas, and Pryor-Cervantes were on the same night.
@gonzomoya420
Cuevas had held the welterweight title since 1976.
Opino cuevas

Thomas Hearns was a great champion who was also lucky to have the body type he had. Against smaller guys like Pipino, Duran, Benitez, etc. Hearns had a big advantage, and as a great champion, he knew how to use his size and reach. However, when Hearns fought bigger guys like Barkley and Marvin Haggler, he got knock out cold...
Don't confuse weight with size
I didn't know Cuevas had 12 defenses...he was great...but, Hearns is one of the best ever
No one before or since Hearns jabbed better than Hearns. Hitman is genius nickname for that jab shoots out machine like. I also love how efficiently he switches the jab into a hook.
A great fighter vs a very good fighter---Hearn's Right was sick
Max Kellerman brought me here
@MisterNifty Well, Hearns won Leonard 2.
The “Hitman” this & The “Hitman” That. Bring on the BLADE BABY. Good Night Tommy Lad....!
