When I was 20 years younger. Gene Rayburns advise was very good. It still is. Don't pocket yourself in one field of expertise. I ran a crew. But also was specialized in two technical fields. Which I was called upon all the time. Everyday. I made it my job.
I just noticed this but they actually have ashtrays on the podiums for the celebrities that smoked which appear to be Jack, Charles, Richard and Fannie. I guess it makes sense considering they supposedly had a bar backstage for them too.
This must be one of the episodes that a viewer recognized Fannie’s dyslexia, sent her a message, she got help, and improved her confidence to write books.
This episode proves why Richard was always picked for the final round. Brown sugar is the definitive answer (according to me lol) but he always knows how people are thinking.
Brown sugar was my first thought as well. I thought for sure Richard would say it since the Stones released it in 1971. Most surprising super match I have seen thus far.
Yes, but... the Brown Derby was an iconic restaurant in Hollywood. It was probably in its heyday in the 40s and 50s, but it was still very well known in the 70s. So it does make sense that Richard thought of it. I think numerous other commenters have established that 1970s rock music was NOBODY'S expertise on this show! (Richard and Brett both had young teenage sons when this was filmed, and undoubtedly were exposed to a lot of the music of the era, but I don't think adult and youth culture had blended in 1974 to the extent they have today. Richard's sons were both musicians.)
Richard's 32st H/H match! Here's the updated leader board for the 7 celebs to have scored 3 or more H/H matches so far, ranked by their current accuracy scores: Orson - 100% (3 wins in 3 attempts). Betty - 50% (8 wins in 16 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 46.7% (7 wins out of 15 attempts). Charles - 43.8% (7 wins in 16 attempts). Bert - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). Richard - 31.4% (32 wins in 102 attempts). Brett - 28.6% (6 wins in 21 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 234, excluding the lost/missing episodes 31, 32, 33.
its interesting that Fannie's consistent spelling errors and inversion of letters are on display here, and played for laughs. Only after the show was she diagnosed with dyslexia
Herring? I thought at least one of them would know that lox is smoked salmon! Any self-respecting deli owner would marinate or pickle the herring, not smoke it.
We know BRETT is drunk on the beginning of the show, she’s already trying to upstage everybody, and she has to put her input in every time no matter who gene is talking to

the problem I have with that is, she smokes as well, i seen her in other episode. so how can she be affected? even before this she had a terrible cough.

The contestant reminds me of the housekeeper on The Jeffersons, her hairstyle and voice. Florence, she was great on the show. 🥰
I absolutely love the color of Brett's top!!!
According to public records, Annette and Excell Hall both passed in their 70s. Hard to imagine these episodes are nearly 50 years old.
Thank you for sharing that information. I always wonder where the contestants are today, if they are even still with us.
I’m sure it was not easy to verify considering it’s a common last name.

Sometimes the celebrities have cups of a clear liquid and Gene will come by and take a sip.

Fannie is so cute, and Elaine as well. 😊
If a cannibal isn't very hungry, might he just want a HAND sandwich?
Marvin Meeker Good one!
Marvin Meeker or maybe just some finger food?
Maybe the cannibal had FINGER foods instead?
I thought of my answer and was surprised that I matched the great CNR!
This must have been one of the "after lunch" episodes.
At least in another decade Rod Stewart would make Forever Young more popular.
And the German new wave group Alphaville.
@80sEric That's such a great song! I love the lyric, "Youth's like diamonds in the sun and diamonds are forever".
Often they ask the questions with the most obvious answers. It just doesn't seem fair sometimes.
Maybe it's on purpose to guarantee a winner and move on with the rest of the show.
Fannie crack me up 😂

Richard was always placing himself in the contestants shoes. His jokes would lead into the perfect answer. A comedian with the right answer.
My first thought was brown gravy.
Richard seems to always wear white pants and often wears that turquoise turtle neck shirt.
I love this show..can’t get enough…that they let Gene Rayburn go was obviously killing the show-stupid arrogant people.
The gang DIDN'T know ANYBODY: Neil Young, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Smokey Robinsom

The contestant Annette who said camel had a point. Gene said a desert island rather than a deserted island.

Jack Narz was always quite the gentleman MC.
