The Sopranos creator, David Chase, is absolutely right when he says that the "golden age of television" is dead. Writers are told to "dumb down" their shows for modern audiences. That's what companies think of us, as mindless consoomers. Stop buying into every new Star Wars or Marvel slop project. Fight back.

“Adults...struggle desperately with fiction, demanding constantly that it conform to the rules of everyday life. Adults foolishly demand to know how Superman can possibly fly, or how Batman can possibly run a multibillion-dollar business empire during the day and fight crime at night, when the answer is obvious even to the smallest child: because it's not real.”-Grant Morrison

I don't care about the nuances of how their theoretical technology functions, but plenty of things that are truly unrealistic rip me right out and I'm no longer engrossed in the plot. There's a balance to what you're saying. Realism does matter to an extent.

One of the saddest youtube trends is the "leechtuber," which is mainly nerd culture youtubers who do daily streams complaining about pop culture but never doing anything about it, and almost EVERY time they do promote something as an exception, it's just as bad or even worse slop than what they complain about. Disney sucks, but so does a 50 year old gray haired bald guy who claims he can do better (they never do).

    • @ThomasRoiloup
      @ThomasRoiloup 4 місяці тому +39

One of the main problems with the leechtuber, by the way, is that they essentially serve as a form of containment. The people who their videos appeals to are contained and essentially harmless, being sold a perpetual diet of outrage and phantom victories over the outrage in a repeating cycle. They're guaranteeing that nothing will change, and whenever someone looks too closely they find that the leechtubers are under contract with a company that is directly profiting off of the ad revenue and superchats, which youtube also takes a cut of. Especially ironic since most will sell youtube as being part of the problem, and yet won't admit that a giant amount of the money they make on youtube is going directly to youtube.

I agree with your conclusion about things getting worse before they get better. Everything dies. Even this influx of trash will die, and something new will replace it. Film went through something similar in the 60s with overly sanatized and mediocre media that then transitioned into the 70s. Ambitious independent artist creating aome of the best representations of the medium. It's only a matter of time before the bubble bursts with this new wave, and the current culture will be consumed by another and hopefully better one. And maybe people will change along with it.

There is no love in hollywood films because feminist activists are driving this agenda. The man in modern movies is mocked, a prop etc. There is no flirting, there is no sexual tension.
Every film follows the same woke blueprint from the last.
Even the BBC news today announced the Oscar's, how u think it started...

@armondtanz Bro, chill. It ain't that deep. Political grifters fighting for sport and money isn't determining the fate of the world. Those things are popping up more and more because the pendulum must shift, and what was counter-culture is now the culture and vice-versa. I'm assuming you live in a first world country, so you'll be fine. You'll still wake up with human rights tomorrow. At most, the whole woke thing can be obnoxious and can be criticized, but the responsibility of a healthy media diet should also be put on the individual. If you don't like the mainstream shoving things down your throat, then you have to search out more niche forms of art to also point to. I try to watch more foreign and indie films to celebrate. That new Godzilla was good. There are still films that deserve major support.

On one hand it is somewhat helpful if you’re starting with literally no audience.
But on the other hand, the way TikTok operates, almost feels like a slot machine. unless you’re looking into what time, what content, and what trends to capitalize on. It’s not a good environment to create interesting art. It seems likes it’s built to boost everyones views at random intervals so they feel seen and keep posting, and posting things that are likely to play into trending topics. It also feels like it’s designed to homogenize everyone’s content…….its destined to become boring and redundant

Another fantastic, even, reasonably positioned and argued thesis. Possibly the best and healthiest discussion I have seen on these important and hard to untangle issues. You break things down in an easy to understand way very effectively. You present your ideas and give solid reasoning behind them with examples that do not derail into tangents or indulgent bashing. You've got just the right amounts of such things and your pacing is truly excellent as a result. And you are clearly confident in the legitimacy of your ideas presented in avoiding overuse of phrases like "In my purely subjective opinion as just a guy on the internet." Rather you let the ideas largely speak for themselves. Highly entertaining and educational on highly important and often complicated modern issues. Really, really stellar stuff. A pleasure to see it talked about this well. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I gave up on "modern" gaming, TV, Movies, Comics etc. a long time ago... If these companies don't get their shit together, I won't pay them a single penny.
However, I still enjoy all these things so the past 2-3 years I've been consuming older stuff in my free time that I've missed out on growing up and hnestly you're all doing yourself a disservice if you continue watching any of this new stuff.
Metal Gear Solid, Deus Ex, Half-Life, Godhand, many of Platinums older Games, older Pokemon games, Total War Rome / Medieval 2 / Shogun 2, Fallout 1,2 NV, System Shock 2, the older GTA Games, The Batman Arkham Games the list goes on
The Sopranos, Lethal Weapon1-3, The Ninja Turtles OG Comics, The Crow, All of Anime (altough they haven't shit the bed over there, the way we did in the past few years) and much more.
I guess what I'm trying to say here is, if you feel turned off by any of these new worthless, soulless Products, there is a whole mountain of older, better content out there that is waiting for you to enjoy. Don't waste your time on garbage that you know is bad, move on without them, you will be doing yourself a favor.

The B movies of yesteryear are the blockbuster hits of today. Then once time has filtered all the garbage coming out now, you can go back and enjoy the 1-2 projects per calendar year that were halfway decent in all of film, tv, games and comics combined. Needle in a haystack if you're consuming modern entertainment without a time buffer for garbage.
I enjoy old niche games and romhacks of old popular games, plus old film/tv that were made in the "Entertainment Era" of Entertainment. Post 2014 or so, the primary goal of entertainment was no longer to entertain, but rather to pander and indoctrinate, openly. I don't respect people who consume such crap; I assume they don't have fully functioning brains, which let's be honest, isn't a far-fetched assessment as evidenced by the purchasing habits of the "modern consumer."

Most People just gravitate towards what’s acceptable and paletable. Its always been that way, but the internet has made it freakishly easy for platforms to figure out exactly who wants what. it just feeds them what they want.
That’s not what makes art interesting or exciting to me. Subversion of expectations, and the creation of something new is why I’m drawn to art/content.
Back in the day, participating in sub cultures took a certain level of commitment, which means that only certain people can break into them. They really have to care, understand, and go looking for said subculture
Now, it’s way to easy to dive into any topic, people have a superficial understanding of subcultures, and it’s made them less substantive
    This video is insanely accurate.

Entertainment has evolved. Videos hating on (insert product) are the new form of entertainment.

I saw a comment on a movie review on the new roadhouse remake and it was basically saying how the problem with modern hollywood fights is that it’s too clean, which I agree with but it’s not just the fight scenes but most of modern entertainment or content creations.
It’s all so corporate and clean and what makes it unique is scrubbed out to fit an algorithm or be the easiest to consume.
It’s like you’re molding a piece of plato and in order for it to be presented someone else needs to scrub it just so it’s easier to understand, In doing so you’re own unique style and individuality is shafted for a more corporate product.
Everything is so clean, corporate and manufactured with no sense of individuality or artistic expression. It’s so brand safe that doesn’t really push the boundaries or express yourself in a visual media.
Especially Content Creating, the main appeal of sites like UA-cam or Twitch is that you are broadcasting yourself. You’re broadcasting yourself with all your flaws and everything that makes you unique (especially live-streaming).
Since UA-cam has gotten more corporate, creators have been forced to cut back on that sorta “edge” they got because it’s not advertiser friendly (h3h3, idubbbz). What made UA-cam so great is to broadcast yourself and all your weirdness and edgy behavior unfiltered, but because UA-cam is sooo scared if advertisers or journalists they are forced to cut down on creators who don’t go with this “brand friendly” model they have going on.
Not to say there aren’t creators who aren’t afraid of being unfiltered, there are a lot of great content creators who don’t care if they are “brand friendly” as long as they are entertaining.
But Yeah, even though things have become so corporate and sanitized in modern entertainment, there are still so many pieces of media that don’t care about being “brand safe”.

Before, I used to just choose based on if it sounded up my alley or not, but now I have to pay attention to when something was released to make a decision.

Any disruptions are felt in the indie or double-A space. The people who got bored of the mainstream offerings went on to play games like Fear and Hunger, Signalis, Rogue Trader, etc. Hyperspecific niche games that curate towards a smaller demographic see sporadic popularity. I think as time goes on, its not just that mainstream media is oversaturated with mediocrity, its that entertainment itself (movies, games, books, music) has balkanized to such a point that the niche is valued and anyone can just find their specific niche to satisfy a certain craving. It's why curators such as UA-cam meme compilation videos or even live-service game passes are so popular; its literally a library of different things brought to the viewer or consumer. There's a bizarre ebb and flow between curators who then develop filtering mechanisms based on what draws the most attention and new, disruptive niches rising everyday is what we're seeing in our lifetime due to how fast everything is consumed nowadays.

I feel like tiktok was the nail in the coffin for political influence in media. it was a problem before, sure, but with tiktok it got way to easy to present and consume ideas without the need for context, reasoning, or data. feel like the internet has to change or it'll be the end of something that we took for granted.

The algorithm is weird... It's a shot in the dark until you grab some magical point and get a following.
Being unique doesn't mean anything... The idea is eventually to play the game... Depending on luck is rarely worth the effort.
One video I made had a boom on twitter, got nearly nothing on UA-cam, and had a marginal attention on facebook and Instagram.
It's all about catching a moment and building an audience in the right place at the right time...
Entertainment in the online world, is less about entertaining, more about catching waves...
I can hardly even call it entertaining... It's "Engagement industry"... The push is for maximum viewer interaction, maximum spread and make them stay on the platform and view more as long as possible.
Nothing about it is about fun... It's about enslaving people to the screen as long as possibly can.

Off the cuff here, but something I always find funny about these grindset gurus on UA-cam is that their advise to making a million dollars always ends up being "start a business". While starting and running a successful business is a very cool thing, I have to wonder. If everyone starts a business, who's gonna be the employee?

    • @EggEnjoyer
      @EggEnjoyer 4 місяці тому

"Start a business" is advice for the individual, not society. So basically they are telling you to climb up the socioeconomic hierarchy. It is a dog eat dog world as of right now.
The problem comes into play when you ask these people how to solve poverty for our society. They still hand out this individualistic advice. The thing is that even if all humans had the power of superman and 10000 IQ, there would still be people who need to clean the bathrooms and take out the trash. And so the advice is worthless. Ultimately they have no advice for the masses. For the masses to be helped, there would need to be a fundamental change to the system and thats just not something theyre interested in.

Idk what's been up with the algorithm for me but I really don't mind things being changed up and getting suggested smaller channels. Lately I'd say a good chunk haven't even hit 1000 subs. Most of them are meh but some I really enjoy. I've been making more of an effort to comment encouragement on those channels since I understand how hard it must be trying to grow a channel in 2024. algorithms can only categorize uploads that are alike to existing ones - something too innovative wont get circulated because it's harder for the machine to categorize. this has lead to an influx of generic formats and people only ever incentivized to be trend followers not trend setters. human curations offsets this issue, like the newgrounds front page system.

And overall, it’s just not really in the spirit of entertainment to watch movies that only care about those things, because it’s supposed to be an escape from reality. Documentaries exist for a reason, people! It is far more effective to educate by creating educational media! But that’s no good, because you can’t advertise your movie with the ???th first woman in a Marvel leading role…

Entertainment and its employees create reality for themselves.
Supply and demand is simple and organic.
15 years ago we had good movies and music, now we have more individual oriented but more authentic culturally relevant entertainment commentators and journalists of which you have a lot of choice and that is a good thing.
There is a niche for everything and out progressive collective thinking, hive mind and outrage is finally picked up by the masses not to go with the mainstream flow.
Next to a rapidly changing world where this period in time is completely different three months from now and consumers are more critical and demand more and better content but every producer of entertainment is confined is his own straightjacket imposed by the community around them to for example standardise and categorise everything that gets some popularity.
