The Gladiator 2 official trailer is out and got instantly downvoted due an incredibly awful music choice. Music that just didn't fit the tone, aesthetic nor setting of ancient Rome. Yet the press decided to not just defend such an obviously unpopular choice, but misinterpret the problems in the first place. Deciding to spam the word anachronism, rather than realise it was simply about a holistic view of the movie. The gladiator 2 trailer also had a lot of other problems that distracted from the setting and made the trailer unrealistic. You end up spending your time analysing the trailer noticing problems, than getting emotionally involved in the story, like in A Knights Tale. But what did you think of the Gladiator 2 trailer? You know that sexual relationships between men were normalized in Ancient Rome right? And by the way, Caracalla and Geto (who's actors are as white and caucasian as milk) were the sons of an arabic sirian woman and a north african man. In terms of appearance, even Michael B Jordan and Danny Glover make more sense than this two. If you are going to complain about black or LGTB representation, at least try to do it in a context less diverse than Rome. Open a history book once in while man
seems you do not know history. Denzel's character was a real person and emperor of Rome and was born in Algeria which is in Africa and he was a descendant of the Berber people who were black so there goes your narrative.
@@KnightmareUSA Adding hip hop to a scene, movie, game or trailer SPECIFICALLY cause there's black characters involved is 100% a negative stereotype. The same was done in Assassin's Creed Shadows when showing Yasuke murdering people, but since it's in Japan, they mixed in "Japanese-sounding" music with the hip hop.

Yeah, but europeans whitewashed all of history two hundred years ago. I guarantee you all the gladiators were melanated. Because when have you seen a white man? That's just ready to bang out, because he's so brave without a badge.
The message is pretty obvious at this point: “The things you love now belong to us and we’re going to do everything we can to ruin them because we hate you”.
The stupid thing is the song (No Church in the Wild) fit well in The Great Gatsby film and marketing. A movie about super rich white people in the 1930's. The song itself is not the problem, it's the lazy pairing with Gladiator 2 because a couple of lyrics fit.

Also, in knights tale the music was picked to give the correct feeling to the audience. Gladiator 2, they picked music where some of the lyrics could maybe match the scene, but who on earth listen to the lyrics in rap songs?
Are they not aware that there was already a black gladiator in the original movie, played by Djimon Hounsou? And yet, they didn't need to put hip hop music in the background and make him gangsta or anything back then, they just made him a realistic period character of African origin.
Well they did fuck it up with that awful "I see fire" pop song over the credits. Which jarred everyone out of the moment. LOTR had us leave to ethereal Enya and kept the fantasy feeling of the movie.
I tried to watch the first episode of the second season of The Serpent Queen and I forgot that there were so many African women in positions of power in 16th Century France, much less all the other ethnicities. I was so mad at being lied to all these years that I turned it off.
Definitely not a good season we waited a damn year for. I remember when a season was 12 episodes and only took a 6 month break between seasons and were actually better each season lol the good old days.
I know how you feel... Cannot watch any "Biblical Movies" and "God's of Egypt" is just ghastly!!! Imagine, the great K'met Empire, born from what is now South Sudan, had nothing but "White" Kings and God's. Ben Hur, an Arabic Jew, played by a great English Actor. Cleopatra, a Greek Empress of Egypt, played by an askanasi Jew. Talk about "Historical Accuracy"... but a movie with a Black man playing an African Emperor of an Empire that had a large African population (and an Emperor named Scipius the African).
the point with that though is this is almost a reboot/remake except Ridley Scott would never allow that, so it becomes a sequel even though the main characters, rather than merely the supporting cast, all died and the story had concluded. for 310million, so its what nearly 620million after advertising, you can make alot of original films of new stories with new characters, some who may even be about hip hop music.
Sequel must be made ONLY if they can keep quality of original or make it better, but seems each and every talentless hacks at Hollywood thinking they some kind of Shakespeare... and they cry for damage control from SJW's and wokies. 1. they race-swapped white dude into black 2. cry that racists don't want to see or hear hip-hop rap in story about Romans/Greeks 3. repeat step 1 and 2 And these is same people who cring me a river why Aquaman and Wonder Woman...white, for real...
@Nachtara-Szellas His later movies don't even feel like he has just lost his mojo, but like he does not even give a flying F about anything. 'Prometheus' for instance suffered from a whole plethora of absolutely silly plotholes that I would not even expect from a bloody beginner, because they were so obvious. And the only explanation I can find when someone of the (former) format of a Ridley Scott is making such blunt mistakes is that he honestly, seriously does not give a crap anymore.
-Race swapped historical figures✔️ -Women in the military during ancient times ✔️ -Out-of-place music✔️ -Padro Pascal✔️ Yep, this is a modern dogshit Hollywood movie alright.
I mean tbf in gladiator 1 there was a black woman who was riding and shooting arrows from the chariot and got sliced in half. But I never really took it as out of place because of… well, the S word the Romans and people of that time committed to a lot and I figured she was just forced into it and became a good fighter because of it. The other girl in the trailer looks seriously out of place.

@@makuthreesixty8228 that's actually a very good fracking point. A bunch of Hollywood executives in a business meeting discussing what unnecessary sequels to make next and one responded with "Gladiator 2" and another said "Genius and we can just insult the audience when it fails"
This is how much cinema has devolved. Gladiator is a story about revenge, honour and sacrifice. The music portrays this beautifully throughout. This trailer gives such a childlike mentality of “oooh sword fights wow look how cool it is to be a gladiator!”
Well in Lazywood sure, but there are those out there that still craft amazing films. Just look at Joker, Dune, Oppenheimer etc. modern western cinema can still deliver if they want to

There was an absolutely hilarious commercial for a product called bubble tape. Gladiator didn't need a sequel. I naively thought that Gladiator was off limits. Gladiator is my number 1 favorite film of all time. There was literally a group of people, making 6 to 7 figures a year, sitting around a table that said " How can we ruin a great film by making a sequel with rap music?" It makes it even worse that they used one of the greatest actors of the past 25 years (Denzel). Reminds me when the orchestra on the deck of the Titanic tried to rally the passengers by belting out a great cover of Kiss' "I wanna rock and roll all night".
Hans Zimmer made the original movie atmospheric, sorrowful, uplifting and it added that overall timeless gleam...now it's just another movie that will age terribly as the accompanying music is just as critical as the actual screenplay itself.
H.Z.'s music like it or hate and the work its in, but it always uplifts the work it is in. Take crysis 2 for example , a lot of people don't like it as a game but everyone admits when the Hans Zimmer tracks hit during that game it always amplifies the moment and whatever impact it has dramatic or otherwise. Just take a look at some of the loading screen cutscenes for the game or its intro/trailer scene and you can see where Mick Gordon and many great composers nowdays drew inspiration from there with how it implements music into the game.

I was a big fan of the original, and this is enough to make me ignore this film. Of course, 2024 Hollywood doesn’t care one bit about my generation and demographic. Nor do they care about film making as an art anymore. It’s now all pandering, mass-marketed BS.
Not taking about realism, talking about thematic context. It's drama. It's fiction. It's art. Might as well have a deep South Alabama accent for the Roman emperor if it "doesn't matter". Let's not be silly though.
I call this the "Hamilton" effect. Some people really liked the musical Hamilton (which was no where near historically accurate, and it had rap music)... I never understood the blind fascination or the awards it received, but now that we got over the hurtle of trying to do a period piece with accuracy (too much work, & oh so boring)- we can now do anything we want with any play, movie or show and no one's allowed to complain out of fear of being called a racist if you don't love it. I love Denzel Washington as an actor... but this was a weird role to take. Especially considering if the Romans ever got their hands on a dark skinned Nubian, he'd of been fed to the lions alongside the Christians. Rome was a terrible place to be if you weren't Roman.
I thought you meant lewis hamilton in f1.. did the same sort of thing clamoring and winning souls (for his own social profile) for some sort of forced diversity. Where the sport, the technology and the people working there are chosen based on quality and performance and merit. Just as an actor you either fit the part or you dont...diversity should have nothing to do with it. Actually, normalcy returned to sport and other drama is more prevalent lol... perhaps showbiz will see the light too soon. I mean how many times can people not like what youre doing and you keep doing it...
So Denzel Washington, (who can pass as a north african or even etrurian in terms of appearance) is weird, but Joseph Quinn (who plays Caracalla and was the son of a sirian woman and north african man) is not weird?

Terrible advice actually. As we have seen, the wrong music wrecks a scene, the right music sells it, as does silence and ambient sound used properly e.g 'Once Upon a Time in the West' which employs all forms brilliantly.
@@def_not_danRight but there’s a difference between “ignorable” and “seamless”. A music should fit seamlessly with the scene it accompanies, unless the intent is to be jarring which isn’t all that often but does happen (as in knight tale where the contrast is purposefully comedic), but often the best musics are the ones that are as integral to a scene as any other visual element on screen. Like I don’t think anyone would say that the music in SW or LOTR is “ignorable”, because it clearly isn’t, it drags you right in the moment the movies are showing to you, and they’re hyper memorable precisely because they are not ignorable. A music that is merely ignorable is a mediocre score at best.

At this point, whenever I hear that Pedro Pascal is in something, I turn around and run in the opposite direction. This was someone who I used to respect when Mando season one came out, but then he got comfortable with his new “Hollywood It-Guy” status and showed his true colors. He became an absolute shill for the corporate media, and that’s not a very respectable title there. But even after that, I thought that his skills as an actor were admirable. Then something magical happened. It came out that he was only doing the voice of the Mandalorian, meaning all of his assumed talent(like be able to convey emotions through body language from behind a helmet) was not actually his, but Brendan Wayne’s and Lateef Crowder’s. Pedro’s absence was also one of the main reasons that Mando season 3 was ruined. They had to give his character arc away to Bo-Karen Reeeeeeze because Pedro wasn’t there to actually do his job as the protagonist. Right now, Pedro Pascal may be the Hollywood It-Guy, but soon, maybe after he messes up Mr. Fantastic too, everyone will see him for what he really is: a talentless hack who made his name off of being typecast as a “daddy”.

Nobody would squint an eye IF this movie was just a comedy about sword-and-sandal movies. BUT they call this Gladiator 2 and hence it dares to be compared to Gladiator. That’s why all the „these other movies did xyz“ arguments don’t work. This movie doesn’t name itself „Knight‘s Tale 2“ or „Blazing Saddles 2“, it named itself „Gladiator 2“. That name by its very nature raises expectations and if Hollywood wants the success it’s gunning for, it better delivers on those expectations (hint: the criticism with the trailer shows that between what the audience expects for a Gladiator 2 and what Hollywood intends to deliver is kind of a huge gap).

A good example of this issue in the past was the soundtrack for "Young Guns II". The film makers wanted to use Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" because of the title of the song and it had the lyrics "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride...". Jon said that the lyrics didn't fit the genre or movie (steel horse is a motorcycle for one), so he wrote "Blaze of Glory" specifically inspired by that movie. The end result speaks for itself.
Not just that track though they brought out a couple of singles around that movie. Both the movie and it's OST where bangers I might add. Still have them lying around somewhere.

Rome conquered Carthage and their nobles were integrated into Roman nobility.
This is BEFORE, the Arabs conquered North Africa. So the Cathagenians would have looked like the South Sudanese (the decendants of the K'met Empire, the place the "West" now calls "Ancient Egypt").
African nobles would also find themselves integrated into European nobility centuries later when the English, French, Germans, Spanish, Dutch, Belgians were trying to weasel their way into the African Empires, which they would later conquer from within.

Agreed. 👍
And it's only starting to ramp up here, while finally common people in the USA are starting to react to the insanity.

"music should be like an audible wallpaper. Just there, ignorable." - Great advice I got once from a very very drunk dude about music in film.
Yeah, music in movies should set the tone but not distract from the scene or take the audience away from it.
I'm so tired of Hollywood saying that I'm obligated to praise and spend money on their crappy movies. I'm not even american, I couldn't care less about their freaking politics.
That sounds like bigoted istaphobe talk!!! How dare you not care which side of history you'll be on!?!? Etc etc.
Terrible advice actually. As we have seen, the wrong music wrecks a scene, the right music sells it, as does silence and ambient sound used properly e.g 'Once Upon a Time in the West' which employs all forms brilliantly.
@@alanbeaumont4848 The only reason you know the wrong music is wrong is because you couldn't ignore it.

This... this is just sad.
i remember my grandmother saying to me "I don't care what they tell you in school, Maximus Decimus Meridius was black"
The father of the two main antagonists was in fact, north african (and their mother sirian). So... They should be more black. At least Denzel can pass as a north african ruler (who were in Rome)
Gladiator is one of those movies that is so good it never needed a sequel. They were better off putting the OG film in theaters then do this abomination.
'Now we are free' became a legendary soundtrack because it fits the movie so well.
The scene of Maximus walking through the field of wheat while 'now we are free' plays is still so iconic 25 years later people still post viral video's about.

The anachronisms in those movies are intentional and used for comedic effect.
It's about "aesthetic and mood". Which is why they used music that would best fit a bank heist movie.
