I like that taverns and inns attract long-term visitors. Had a few legendary human warriors that single-handedly defeated an entire siege while the base was locked-down.
Annoying when thieves, vampires, and werebeasts are brought in. It’s I’ve moved my guest tavern to a separate part of the map from my main base. Annoying to have guests rambling through the base
If there's one thing I learned from this that I had NO idea about, it was the thing about the multiple chairs around tables being a bad idea! Next time I make a big long dining table I'll double up on the tables used so dwarves can face each other without fighting.
I was not aware of this either, but I think that would explain why one of my miners had too much to drink and launched into a furious brawl with another fellow dwarf. The miner actually greviously wounded the other dwarf and he bled out in the tavern. I sent my militia to put him down after exiling him from the fortress, and I watched in horror as this drunk pickaxe wielding miner cut down the entire squad of heavily armed macedwarves. Safe to say, I retired this fortress.
Can you make a video explaining overlapping zones? Can I overlap a dining hall with a meeting hall / tavern? Should I make a tavern out of a dining hall or meeting hall? I always find these very confusing and I'd love a video explaining these in depth.
If zones overlap, they are considered less valuable by dwarves. Shared tiles with a wall or door on them don't count as overlapped spaces. You can either designate spaces so as not to overlap at all, like he does in the video, or you can just make sure you've got doors installed in all the doorways. You can also get over the overlapped zones penalty by just filling the space with super-valuable materials. Building a pedestal and putting artefacts on it is one way to do this. It used to be the case that engravings only counted on one side of each wall tile, so some people preferred double-thick walls. However, I think that's been changed in the steam version and now both sides of the wall will see a benefit from engravings.
@@mattmorgan2525Thanks for the detailed explanation! I had the same question and it was helpful to get an answer from your comment without searching the web or a wiki. Very thorough and helpful response!
I think any difference you've seen in happy thoughts is more due to the value of the materials than the specific type of material used. Any metal throne will be more valuable than a wooden chair of the same quality so dwarves will be happier to sit there.
Oh wow thanks for this. I thought I knew mostly everything about taverns but watched because I enjoy your content … I had no idea you needed a tavern keeper to use the stored goblets! Always something new to learn about DF 😂
I really appreciate your videos Blind, I've been playing for a decade and these videos are so useful in helping me find out what I'm missing when building my fortresses.
i dont use tavern keepers, never had an issue with dwarves not grabbing mugs from the chest/coffer. :S + from what little research i did, a tavern keeper can kill dwarves via alcohol poisoning (over serving)
icon made a pretty good tutorial. Would love to see Blind's take on it though as well. The instruments are slightly different in each world so I always end up taking separate notes to keep track of it. ua-cam.com/video/c2Zv_lW8a7I/v-deo.html
Hi blind, thanks for the tut! Quick question. I assigned 2 tavern keeper, but neither of them is serving the dwarfs drinks. And my dwarfs seems to get annoyed by it. Everything is correctly setup. Is it a bug?
Yes. Got 2 coffers with rock mugs in them and plenty of booze, chairs and tables. My tavern keepers tend to not do anything. When i force them to "only do this job" they just usually go to the nearest shrine and pray.
@@stray_vrtx I played dwarf fortress recently and I realized there's a bug about that but is not related to tavern but shrines itself. My plan was to make a highly religious fortress with lots of shrines for each deity, but I didn't realize you MUST do a general / public shrine that isn't for a specific deity, otherwise your dwarf will get stuck in a shrine endlessly praying and forbidding himself to do any other tasks. If that doesn't help I suggest trying to use burrows to get your dwarf "unstuck", but keep in mind that general shrines are a must have.
Did they fix the bug with Inn bedrooms while I wasn’t looking? At launch they didn’t associate to the tavern properly so they got used as free bedrooms
Does anyone know if rented rooms can only be taken by your own dwarves? Ive never seen one taken by a visitor before and thought that was the point of having rented rooms in the tavern?
If I have my tavern set to "All visitors welcome" do the visitors pay for what they drink/eat or do they eat for free like the residents of the fort? If not what is the benefit of having a tavern open for all?
Can I have stills and workstations in taverns? For some reason I never see anyone do this. Having a still right next to the beer stockpile is common sense, no? Unless there's a debuff of some kind in doing so?
I often make my tavern and dining hall out of two rooms that i divide between the two functions. In one I put the table for dining and the large space for the dance area and in the other I put all the cooking related workshops and corresponding stockpiles. Unlike something like a bedroom, there is no need to make taverns and dining hall stick to specific rooms, so you can play a lot with the architecture.
idk if this is a bug that only happened to me, but it seemed that dwarves would not take mugs out of the chest/coffer in the tavern, only the tavernkeep could access them so I put a bin of mugs in there as well. also it might be a good idea to put the food stockpile near the dining hall because (unless this was recently changed) dwarves will take their food to the nearest table/chair from where they picked up the food, leading to meals being eaten in my library and seeds left on the stools
can you make a video showing how to make an artifact display room ? i see these in various videos but cannot find videos showing how its done . TY in advance
Make a pedestal, Place the Pedestal. Then click on put item on display. Click it, Select the artifact. Decorate to your hearts content. Add it to whatever room you like.
@@BlindiRL I have been using a pedestal locked behind a door inside temples and guilds (to prevent theft). It gives a significant boost to the value of the room. Am I to assume the locked door prevents it being admired? If so do you think a military wall that lets you shoot arrows through it would allow dwarves to see it?
The most important part about having a tavern and having it set up early is that you will get to hear that banger of a song as soon as possible!
I had to look it up to say this, but…

You should always take metal or stone thrones over wooden chairs if you have the option. thrones give an additional happy thought.

The real benefit is that you can listen to the singer going off.
Nice tip on the connected dinning hall.
Is there any difference between having a separate dining hall and tavern vs. designating a dining hall itself as the tavern?
if i remember correctly, dwarfs in a tavern dining hall will get 2 happy thoughts (1 for being in a tavern and 1 for eating in a dining hall)
All the visits now preffer to hang out in the small inn , instead of the the big tabern.😅

Hey can you do a vid of fulfilling “office” requirements. I have all the stuff but it comes up yellow instead of green when I look at the tab.
i know this video is old but you might wana point out that if this is made outside you need to make sure everything roofed in
If I have my tavern set to "All visitors welcome" do the visitors pay for what they drink/eat or do they eat for free like the residents of the fort? If not what is the benefit of having a tavern open for all?
No, booze in dwarven forts is free.
they pay with the knowledge, happiness (and occasionally military expertise) they provide, build guildhalls and libraries as well to maximise this.
How far from bedrooms should I place a dining hall? Does it disturb dwarfs sleep?

Should you stock food in the dinning hall?
Great explanation, except for the assumption that everyone knows where or what the "multi select tool" is when you added the bedrooms.
My long term citizens keep sleeping on the floor and don’t use the inns to sleep in. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
idk if this is a bug that only happened to me, but it seemed that dwarves would not take mugs out of the chest/coffer in the tavern, only the tavernkeep could access them so I put a bin of mugs in there as well. also it might be a good idea to put the food stockpile near the dining hall because (unless this was recently changed) dwarves will take their food to the nearest table/chair from where they picked up the food, leading to meals being eaten in my library and seeds left on the stools
That's not a bug, that's designed behaviour. Blind even mentions it. Only the tavern keeper can use the mugs in a coffer in the tavern.
He mentions this in the first couple minutes
May be i am dumb, but what about food? Do i need to make a stokpile with meals connected to a dinning halll?
You can but you don't "need" too.
Why a meeting zone versus using a dining hall zone? Just asking because I use both sometimes.
When someone rents a room, how and where do they make a payment?
They don't rent them but if somebody is sleeping in one it tells you that it's being granted.
Huzzah!
