For over 50 year Sports Illustrated Magazine was the go to place for sports media. But recently they layed off their entire staff and there doesn't seem to be anything left of the company. What happened to them was a series of events, and failure to adapt to the internet age. This is the story of Sports Illustrated the greatest sports magazine to ever exist.

Hey flemlo, I was wondering if you could help me out bro and I could help you. I am a college student who needs to do a research paper, I want to do it over something to do with sports. Could you give me some ideas? Once I have the paper done, I could send it to you so you can make a video over it (I would like a shout-out or like $10-$20 for the paper once I get it done).

Only thing you guys are missing is the iconic images, which is very difficult in a video-based medium. I think Grossi’s 30 in 30 series has come the closest so far.

A little note about the Blockbuster story: they passed on buying netflix because they’d already signed an infrastructure deal with Enron to provide broadband internet to the masses, allowing streaming to become a business model years before Netflix went from a web-order video service to a streaming platform. Had Enron not been committing accounting fraud and they actually fulfilled their deal with Blockbuster, Blockbuster would’ve been a streaming service 5 or so years before Netflix

My grandfather had the SI subscription for 20 + years. I have memories of him teaching me to read as he flip through the pages, or just me learning so much about the sports loved. It’s def sad to see them go, but they provided so much to us as sports fans and that should always be remembered.

I have hundreds of Sports cards from Sports Illustrated for Adults/Kids. My grandpa paid for it the first time and just kept renewing it for me every year. I don’t remember when he stopped, but I still have all of those cards, along with the magazines they came with me still. I know I have the cards with me, but the magazines are probably at my mom’s house. I currently live with my Grandparents due to their health declining, so I get to see my paw’s reactions every time he see the cards

Takes me back. My grandparents paid for my SI subscription from the early 1970's until well into the 80's. I didn't really know my dad but his parents used to take me to see ballgames in Detroit, Cincinnati and Cleveland every Summer. I'd spend the drive catching them up on everything I'd read in the magazine.

For the longest time, I wanted to work for Sports Illustrated. Being a sports journalist by trade, I wanted to be Rick Reilly and write with that same flare and insight so many of the writers had. You didn’t get that kind of freedom at a local newspaper, not even when it came to the features I would write. In 2007 I left my job of 11 years, needing a reset and time away. Little did I know 2008 would be the death knell of not just our economy, but of the print industry as well. And as I look at sports “journalism” these days, it just seems like bad E! Television and Keeping up With the Kardashians vibes. It truly was a legendary publication, as I was a subscriber for many years. But nobody cares about the brand anymore, just themselves. 70 years is a good run, but it could have kept going for many years if the right people took over.

It makes me sad that we will never know the greatest writers of our generation, because there is no venue for their talent. I hope that this is one bottom end of a cycle and that magazines and quality writing make a comeback. As much as I love watching UA-camrs like FlemLo and others, I just miss the old days sometimes.
When the magazine comes in and you can barely contain your excitement, not only at the news, but the way the writing popped off the page and brought you to a different world. May this not a be a RIP, but a new beginning.

I enjoyed SI for decades and then comes the internet. A former player like you as well as fantastic with logical, indepth, entertaining, and informative stories are the ultimate competition. They held no leverage as top journalists and it wasn't worth the $$ competing in the end. Great job sir b/c you are indeed the next generation of top tier sports journalism!!!

Another aspect of writing is alot are freelancers/designated as contractors. Specifically California, they past laws a few years back that made it harder for companys to have contractor/freelancers. Specifically for writers, you can be anywhere in the country and be employed as a writer. But by law "specifically companys connected to cali" if you write a curtain number of articles, that company has to make you an employee. Being designated as a employee comes with different text stuff and insurance, hence why they may opt to employ as freelancers or contractors. So when the law passed, many 1000s got laid off. Not sure if this or anyone other laws effected them negatively, but it probably didn't help.

Your delivery and flow shows that you actually put thought and care into your craft..you are the new SI.

I remembered reading those SI Kids articles from around the mid 2010s from the school's library and just having a BLAST seeing not just the sports, but the little games into it. I remembered also having a collection of those sports cards they had included with those articles before disappearing in my old house. I miss those Middle School days... RIP

I’m from a small town (well, small when I lived there) and the nearest mall was over an hour away, so It was a rare thing. But I’ll never forget in 8th grade when I got to go, and I finally got my hands on the swim suit issue, I felt like a damn king, and the kid hiding it in the mattress at the beginning hit too close to home 😂

Man, the irony in this one is kind of painful.
@FlemloRaps, you are who I look to first for quality sports reporting. Not the real-time, post-game stuff. The deeper, insightful backstory. That's why I would scramble to get my hands on Sports Illustrated 20 years ago when I was in high school. To find those stories that went deeper than the Sportscenter rundowns and Baseball Tonight segments. Now, I check your channel daily in anticipation of what you've put together and how you've crafted the story to shine light in dark corners of the world around some of our time's most fascinating and/or controversial professional athletes.
You are one of the best of our generation.

@@curronwilliamslmaooooo. It’s crazy bc the OG French dude would’ve never ever let anything crazy like that happen. He knew his market. The VASTTTTT majority of sports fans, SI readers are male. They want to see beautiful women. Hell even a ton of women (straight, normal women) want to see beautiful women on the cover of the swimsuit edition or w/e. Truly see real, beautiful women be celebrated, not crazy photoshopped anorexic models, or obese women, or whatever else.
Like he said the French appreciate the female body. It’s simply more beautiful than the male body…regardless of your preferences. Did anyone wanna see the body issue? The ones where you saw naked 300 pound dudes holding a baseball bat or w/e to cover up their junk? CRAZY.
