      Good point, in basketball I think of the quote from Andrew Bogut when he was on the Warriors. He basically commented on how surprised with how much he would get away with in terms of screens because the refs were so caught up watching Steph shoot (can't really blame them tbh lol). No doubt the crazy Oracle crowd also played a role in swaying calls. IMO a lot of it comes down to the refs being human which means that they aren't immune to getting caught up in the hype of the crowd and the moment. Very interesting to see that the bubble seemed relatively bias free too.

    One of my mini theories is ticket prices. High school crowds are super engaged and "impact" the game with energy. When games are more expensive to go to, the people who are there aren't as engaged with the game because they aren't the hyper passionate fans. Random celebs aren't the core fanbase that's waving the towel, screaming at the opposing players, etc.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 3 дні тому

      I feel this is the case. Ticket prices have gone up so the seats that were even affordable for the passionate are more for those with a stack of cash especially in the playoffs. For the passionate fans they can get a general experience with better viewing angles of the action at home. With having food and the bathroom within a comfortable distance.

  • @bradleyalbright7374
    @bradleyalbright7374 5 місяців тому +10

    Just a little note here that it is almost likely that the higher seed will play more games at home in the playoffs. For example if the 1 seed beats an 8 seed in 5 games then they would have played 3 games at home and two games away (2 home / 2 away / 1 home). Keeping in mind that teams may take their foot off the gas after winning the 2 games at home it seems likely that they may win all 3 home games in total and lose one of the away games.
    This could definitely contribute to the point differential spread being higher in the playoffs. This is opposed to the regular season which should theoretically have an even spread of the lower seed and higher seed playing each other home and away.
    As always a beautiful video and look forward to the next one with more lego shenanigans :)

    MacKelvie glossed over the reason why higher Elevation results in greater HCA. Lesser-known reason is that BASKETBALLS TRAVEL A LONGER DISTANCE (notice that Colorado Rockies have the most HRs) due to less air friction, leading to more missed shots for the away team as the visitors are not adjusted to the new arc or trajectory. Yes, altitude affects players both physically and mentally, making them feel breathless and fatigued because of less concentrated air. But that is not the only explanation.

    • @ninjalectualx
      @ninjalectualx 3 місяці тому +1

      The fact that this effect disappears in the playoffs supports your point. In the playoffs, both teams are changing elevation at the same time so they are equally disadvantaged

    I rarely comment but your content is so good and well put together. One minor request/critique is to provide a little more time to view the charts and graphs (such as the scoring margin at 6:37 that was on the screen for less than 4 seconds). I’m finding that I’m having to rewind and pause the video occasionally in order to read some of them since I want to be able to read the axis labels and each bar info. It's a big day when a new video gets uploaded.
    I have a thought recently that's kinda related to the "passing on passing" video before, "is dribbling inefficient?"
    My reasonings are:
    1. The ball is always faster than any player running.
    2. Moving without the ball is easier and faster than moving with the ball.
    3.Less dribbling naturally leads to more passing which based on your previous video is a hidden gem.
    Given these, it seems to me that a dribble move to get past a defender can be instead replaced by a pass and then an offball cut, you get more options and usually the defender relaxes even a bit when the ball is not on you so an offball cut could open temporary gaps in defense that a defender locked in on a ball handler wouldn't have.
    I know that there's already a college team that dribbles much less than average and instead focuses on passing and cutting so I think there might be something there.

  • @bogusphone8000
    @bogusphone8000 5 місяців тому

    Back when I played in a couple of leagues, there were gyms that absolutely destroyed shooting percentages. Traveling teams would enter these gyms and the best players would lose 5-10%. Something about the layout, the lighting, whatever it was, it was dramatic and obvious that those gyms messed with depth perception.
    I remember years ago that players talked about how playing in LA and New York was disruptive due to the "stage" lighting.
    So, I believe that as the atmosphere and similarity of arenas in the modern age has diminished the variables and their impacts have waned. Travel has improved. Lodging has improved. Personnel management has improved. With all of these improvements, the delta between home and away has shrunk considerably.
    Now, to this specific video, very well done!

    As a math major, I appreciate your logical breakdowns. One small thing I think you missed at 12:40... In the playoffs, the better teams gets home court advantage. Logically, the better teams should also have a higher 3pt %, hence why this is likely a greater difference in the playoffs: as the better teams get more home games to add to your stat.

    The .3% difference in playoff and regular season open 3s is probably due to players playing more minutes and exerting more effort so being more tired

    My Boston Celtics have been a home/away anomaly… I think the post season pressure to win affected guys the last few seasons.
    Thanks for confirming it’s the Refs… saw my Celtics have a 1 FT game this season, at home… glad we ended up on the right side of the script.

    It is probably because in middle school and high school, it was more of a hobby. So you are more affected by people's noises. But when you become an amateur or a pro, you start to tune out those noises to concentrate on the game. Great video!

      The noise is less when you are a pro in the NBA tho.
      Look at Europe where its the opposite.

      @@eleonarcrimson858That wasn’t the reason they took out the away goal lol. Teams intentionally played extremely negative football during the 2nd leg of most games and also it was a rule that really didn’t make a lot of sense anyway. The home side advantage is still very prominent in football. Take the premier league for example.

      @@aquilabamigbade3473 first teams change the way they play based on the state of the game. For example, you are up a goal on your opponent, you can sit back and absorb pressure against better teams. It isnt because its a second leg that you would do this. It happens in minutes sometimes. And also the premier league's home advantage is also not as influential as it used to be. United for example, a fairly average team, has 10 wins at home and 8 wins away.

    This channel would get subscribers faster if it had a 'symbolic' and catchy name, instead of a literal name. One of the best youtube channels regardless.
