I have one living in my shed. I understand it's pretty harmless and beneficial for killing mice in there so I leave him be. But sometimes he's hanging head level off the rafters and it scares the sh!t out of me.

Wow just rescued a 5 foot black rat snake caught in fence netting in my flock yard! At first I thought it was a black snake - then noticed the patterned scales - and this video was so helpful to identify it correctly! Poor fella got hung up trying to squeeze through the netting holes and got hung up there stretched across the top of the fence. I was able to carefully snip away the netting while it remained calm and I softly spoke reassuringly so as not to cause panic. All good results in the end. Finally slipped through a proper sized hole near the ground and away to the freedom of the woods nearby. My brothers and I would try our skills at catching harmless grass snakes - just because we were kids! I called on those early experiences in the best way for a good safe outcome.

We have had one living in our yard for years. He came by our screened patio every day the first week of the lockdown to check on us and entertain us by demonstrating how far up the outside of the screen he can spring to catch skinks. I think he feels bad for us living in a cage.

I love anyone who attempts to educate the public about snakes. I would suggest that you differentiate between the black rat and "the black snake" which is either a black racer or perhaps an indigo snake. Both have different dispositions from the Blk rat. The racer, of can catch it will bite you. I've had a love affair with snakes for my 64 years on Gods great earth and love to see those like you who educate the public

Black racers are your friend too tho, yes they'll bite but simply leave nature alone and nature will leave you alone. But they will eat just about anything. They'll even swallow a rattle snake.

I captured two of these beauties when I was 12 in a beautiful forest between Glen Burnie and Annapolis Md. I released both of these charmers unharmed where I had found them. Sadly that forest was completely destroyed in the name of progress to make way for shopping centers in the mid 60's along with all of the wildlife and it's rich biodiversity. Thanks for this video and your attempts at educating the ignorant among us. It helps!

I've been bitten by a black ratsnake after I saved him from being tangled up in netting. Nothing but a tiny scratch that barely bled. These snakes couldn't hurt you if they wanted to, and usually they don't want to.

If you don't mind a little constructive criticism, I would have liked to hear more facts about the snake in your video. In future videos you should try to list off a bunch of different facts about whatever animal your talking about. For this guy, I think these questions would have been cool to hear.
Are they venomous? How big can they get? How do they hunt? Where are they native to? Where do they sleep/live? How old can they get? What should people do if they see a snake?
I guess just make it a bit more educational. It was already pretty entertaining and the climbing trees thing was cool to see. I just think a bit more info on the creatures you find would be really cool!

I just found two of these today in my chicken coops. I have 4 coops. I found 1 snake each in two coops. They were both in a nest box eating eggs. I'm quite glad they are here. A couple eggs is a reasonable wage for a pair of guardians that keep the pesky mice away. Very cool.

    • @pushies5
      @pushies5 2 роки тому

I think you should not let them eat the chicken eggs because they will resort to eating eggs when its easier for them to get the eggs than search for rat, and to add to that most snakes have slow metabolism so they have a large gap between eating session. Just my 2c

These snakes are all around where I live. My sister used to have a California King Snake (who was the coolest snake that's ever existed) so I'm somewhat comfortable with domesticated snakes..but not too long ago there was a huge black rat snake right next to my front door, and I freaked out and ran away lol. He was docile, and calm. I thought..I'm not too sure why I was scared. I think it was just being surprised by him being there. You are awesome! This video calmed me even more, as I would never kill one of these harmless snakes. I must coexist happily

My wife and I sold our house last year and moved out to the country to live with my brother in law while he undergoes cancer treatments. The other day we saw a black rat snake sunning itself on the concrete parking pad behind the house. He was a nice size, maybe around 4.5 to 5 feet or so. We tried to get him off away from vehicles but he didn't want to move, so I picked his long butt up and moved him out of the way without incident. He eventually moved on but hopefully he's still around somewhere. I look for him every time I go out there but haven't seen him again yet.
My wife freaks out over all snakes, but I educated her about how valuable these black rat snakes are to have around and what a nice disposition they have. Hopefully I'll see him again soon and if I do I'll let you all know.

Every black racer ive caught was gentle as shit, but i caught one rn, shes heavily injured and ofc was heavily guarded and aggressive, but since ive been helping her out (she was ran over by the neighbors lawn mower and her tail got chopped off, cloaca is fine, 3 belly scales from her vent, and also a good shave on her left hand side near her head, peeled the scales and exposed fatty tissue and barely a sliver of muscle) she has been nothing but nice to me, i fed her, she let me pet her as we listened to music and i created her a new tub because i didn’t have a spare terra, she immediately went to her hide away and its all in the first day..... tomorrow im soaking her and more triple antibiotic cream, til she pulls together and is healed.... long, very stressful journey ahead for the both of us, but its a new learning experience for the both of us, shes never been handled due her being a wild rescue, and ive never had to care take a snake like this, but good thing the snake community helps one another out and i have learned what to do for her, and i hope we both make it during this long path ahead.

I just "caught" one yesterday. My dad called me over and said that there was a snake on the garage door. Now, I live on a small farm in Iowa, and I've only encountered Garter Snakes and Black Rat Snakes. So, once I get inside the garage, I look up and see about a 4 foot Black Rat Snake trying to get down, and I suppose it wasn't frightened nor threatened of us, since I talked to it in a calm, but encouraging way. I opened a door for it to move towards, but it realized that it was out of things to climb onto, so I reached out for it, and was able to get it to use my arm as a grabbing point. For its own safety (from my mom) I took it down a hill about 30+ feet away and released it, making sure it kept going away from the house. I must say, that was among the most calm Black Rat Snakes I had ever seen.

I just had to evict one of these from my upstairs bedroom. I used tongs & moved it to the side of my yard where we let the grasses, bushes & weeds grow wild. I think he was looking for a way back outside so he was almost appreciative when he saw where I put him.

@@TheWildReportOfficial Hope so! And I was happy to get him out safely before my dog & 2 cats discovered him. If he came into our house because of a rodent or other wild prey I hope he was able to catch it.

I had one in my basement apartment after seeing mice. After chasing the snake into a corner, I never saw mice again.

In the nc mountains I have seen a massive black snake I am pretty sure it is pushing ten feet if my measurements are right. I would not know because every time I see it. It is gone by the time I get to it

Wow I just caught a 5 footer great video.i wasnt sure but the black checks are a sure identity marker .He had no problem climbing out of a huge tub 20 inch deep.so hes in a smaller with lid...I caught a black racer the same size he wasnt as friendly as these videos show as the racer left a double bite mark with his mini shark sharp teeth.

I was happy to see one in my backyard today. No one should ever kill these snakes.

If you see rat snakes around the problem isn’t the snakes. The problem is you have rats and mice in the area. Up here in the Atlanta the only snakes I’ve seen on my property are garter snakes, king snakes, and a whole helluva lotta Georgia brown snakes. They’re harmless but they’re all over the place.

Where I work we have woods nearby…and have had baby northern ring snakes…black snake with a gold ring around the neck…get in our building before. I guess the mama is laying eggs under the foundation. Anyway, last night, we found a small rat snake, maybe around 3ft, inside the building, just slithering across a hallway. I have brothers, so am slightly comfortable with snakes. I picked him up,he didn’t bite me. We let him go outside. It was pretty cool.

Wow! Thank you. I live in Mt. Pleasant and have seen many black snakes. Just recently one sunning in the back yard. Only about 10 inches. I have many frogs and lizards as well. Guess that's why he's sticking around. Thank you for sharing.

Rat snakes are particularly good at climbing trees, as they can flex their belly scales outward, so they almost act like tread on the bottom of your shoes.

I'm here because the black snake that we released into the house years ago finally showed itself. It's almost 5 feet long now.
