    We have 3 pitch black snakes on our property. 1 large, 2 smaller. We also have a very large, long yellow and dk brownish grey rat snake, that is always pregnant. They know we won't hurt them. I have seen them laying with our pigs, in their hay pen, and will just stay still and look back at us. I always get down low and say hi and how beautiful they are to them. One of yall told me, it is less threatening to them, to get down low ? They are all beautiful and do not scare me at all. I am a live and let live type. I enjoy seeing them around. Our yellow and grey was pregnant and stretched out and I said Girl, you look like a beaded necklace ! Shortly after a rain and thunder storm, she had laid her eggs somewhere, as her body was half back to normal. I am a Mom of 3, so I could totally commiserate with her ! She looked so over it. I love all critters :)

    North American rat snakes whatever they're called are adorable and I hope to have a home big enough to have one.

      My son has a 6 footer in his attic..I love it…we saw him come out of his vent hood, sun awhile and then drop back down in the attic…My son is so scared of snakes, but I told him he’s the best friend u can have, just leave him alone…

    I have a black rat snake (eastern rat snake). Hes still a baby but hes fun to watch. I plan on building him a large terrarium once hes bigger. Theyre really cool and luckily legal in my state.

      He is extremely intelligent too. He's always watching me when im in my room. He eats well, he is on frozen thawed pinkies (larger sized pinkies but not quite fuzzies) because he's still tiny. He never refuses food. He's a little spicey and strikes but he's never actually tagged me. I think he mostly just bluffs. When he gets a little bigger I'm gonna work with him on handling more incase he ever needs medical care that way it is less stressful. I don't handle him now because of his size. Worried about accidentally squishing the Lil fella.

    One of my all time favorite native species and can be quite impressive when full grown and usually quite docile. It’s funny I say that and it happens to be the first snake to bite me but that was completely my fault i think I was about 7-10 and found nice 4-5ft male and he lit me up 😂. I’ll always love these guys and absolutely sad that I haven’t seen any in over 10years now they used to be quite common 🤦‍♂️

    Very informative and enjoyable video. These are very nice snakes ! We have them where I live. We've even had small ones come into our house. They are appreciated and respected by us.

    I’ve kept many Eastern Rats when I was a kid. One of them was 5 1/2ft and had a terrible attitude escaped the enclosure twice and bit me 3 times. That was most the most difficult snake I ever had. Their personality can really vary like any other animal but overall they are pretty easy to keep in captivity just like a Kingsnake. They are experts at escaping so don’t be surprised if it goes missing one day

    Are they similar size too a rainbow boa's which are slender boas and climber's. I know both are slightly bigger than ball pythons.. my ball pythons females upto 250 gram Large rats every 2-3 wks . so i like to know can i feed black rat snakes and rainbow boa's jumbos rats which starts at 280 gram ? Also will like to know if can feed black rat snakes adult squirrel, pigeons, and guinea pigs . Can you house adults black rat snakes comfortable im 75 gallon tanks? I know that adult 6 ft California king snake's can be housed in 55 gallon tanks but there less thick girth .

      @@GetmoneyMaine-g5o generally colubrids take smaller more frequent meals because sure the have faster metabolisms than boids so many people leave them on mice and feed a couple at a time or smaller rats, something like a medium rat would be bigger than what people would recommend and would likely lead to obesity. Black rats are one of the longest colubrids in the continent and can get over 7feet long and love to climb so for larger animals, my personal recommendation is something at least 4 feet long

      My adult corns,milks and kings take small rats rather easy but the larger ones 5-6 ft will take medium rats too . If black rat snakes are larger versions of sll 3 i mention . Than even doe people feed them 2,3 small rats or 4-6 jumbo mouse. But from just by judhing large corns,kings,milks that eat small and medium rars of course as tgey say the karger tge snake thr bigger meal so what that says to me is black rats will eat large rats twice monthly every 14 days no issues . Only if fed that ssme way on weekly schedule it will maybe get obese but not on 2 wks feeding is more than time to defecate etc . But other itrms they see as prey are pigeons , quail , adult squirrel 🐿️ , dove 🕊️ tokays , chameleon, skinks, beared dragons for varied diet captivity in wild.

    Excellent information. I just acquired a yearling western rat snake whose life would have been terminated by the home owner. The snake was found eating baby birds out of a house finch nest. I'm so glad the person called me to come and get it, rather than kill it. The snake is about 18" long and I have a large tub set up for it with aspen substrste, water bowl, and hide box. The baby rat snake is very friend too. My question for you is should I try feeding it a frozen\thawed fuzzy mouse once a week, or should I offer it food twice a week? I would appreciate any suggestions you have concerning the proper feeding of this wild caught juvenile western rat snake. On a side note, I did acquire a reptile permit earlier this year from the Texas Fish & Game Department that allows me to legally capture a jeep a wild native snake.

    How would you say this relates to the “Texas Rat snake” ? I’m wondering because sometimes they look almost exactly alike… and Texas rats are known for their large size correct ? Thanks JZ !!

    • @JzsReptiles
      @JzsReptiles  Рік тому +3

      That’s the whole thing about them. Texas rats are obsoleta and so are “black rats” but “black rats” can also be Easterns and greys. It’s very convoluted

    I have a question sir.
    I live in Ontario Canada and 3 years ago I bought what was classified as an Anery Cornsnake. Is there a difference, or is it the same as a gray ratsnake?

    • @JzsReptiles
      @JzsReptiles  9 місяців тому

      Probably not. A corn snake is a rat snake but a different species, usually smaller and naturally lives further south east than most of the grey rat range and Anery is just a recessive morph of it but they certainly look similar
