- Every year, I search my neighborhood for an absolutely massive black rat snake which I have named Big Bertha. After not seeing her for the past four years, I was getting worried, but in this video we finally got to recapture this legendary snake and present her for the camera!

Other animals aren't toys to dress up and pose for your amusement, or tools for you to use as you please. Leave other animals alone. Good doesn't excuse evil. Humans have a serious lack of empathy when it comes to other animals. They're not mindless machines. Their emotions aren't muted. Human ego is disgusting.
Other animals don't belong in the entertainment industry. They're not props to use on a set. Not only is it extremely stressful for them, and wild animals are abused until they submit to human will, but how dare you deprive them of their life. Elephants that do tricks and give rides aren't happy. They do it out of fear of what happens if they refuse. Swimming with dolphins isn't fun. It's extremely stressful for them, and leads to them catching diseases. They're viewed as tools for profit, nothing else.
Hagrid didn't support using dragons in the Triwizard Tournament. That's horrific abuse. Kidnapped, sent across the world, trapped in tiny cages they couldn't even move in, stabbed and hit with spells, and made to feel threatened and attacked whilst chained up in an arena surrounded by screaming humans. As is exploiting, abusing, scaring, disrupting grindylows, fish, other animals in Great Lake.
Other apes, monkeys, and horses used on cards aren't smiling because they're happy. They do a "fear grimace", smiling in submission. They're not happy, they're abused.
Cats and dogs were specifically bred over 1000s of years to live with humans. Other animals weren't. What they are is kidnapped, and locked in tiny cages and tanks for human amusement. They're not pet animals, they're slaves.
Freedom is what matters in life. You wouldn't trade freedom for comfort and safety, and have no right to force that on other animals.
Intelligence doesn't make one animal more special than another. Just a trait humans have. No better than running or flying. Evolution has no will. It's not trying to make other animals more human-like. A slug is as evolved as we are. A slug got it right.
It doesn't make you inherently better at all, and saying that totally disregards how stupid and evil humans are. It's nonsensical. That's human ego. The second an alien race arrives that's more intelligent than we are, you will move the goalposts for what it means to be more special. You say it not because it's true, but because it currently benefits you.
Only animals of human-level intelligence are capable of evil. Wouldn't put the same level of responsibility on human children and mentally disabled people, and obviously shouldn't on animals of an entirely different species. Humans aren't more special or important than other animals. Something isn't worse because it happens to humans. You're not better by definition.
Having human-level intelligence doesn't somehow stop you being an animal. Makes no sense, whatsoever. It's specifically because you're an animal that you can have human-level intelligence. It is a trait of animals because an animal has it: humans.
Everything humans do is by definition animalistic, because humans are animals. There's no distinction. Being an animal isn't an insult. It's awesome. And it's what lets you be you.
Breeding is evil. Other animals are forced to have sex, which is rape. Females are treated like conveyor belts, pumping out child after child, all of whom are kept from their fathers and kidnapped from their parents, causing massive distress, fear, panic, and confusion. When no longer profitable, they're abandoned like a broken tool no longer of any use. Other animals are #NotProperty to buy or sell. Adopt. They'll show you how full of love life is. Save their life, and they'll save yours.
Other animals don't have "vets". They have doctors, and health and medical care, just like humans. There's no distinction. There'd be outrage if humans had different doctors and terms depending on their race. It's no different for other animals. That's speciesism.
It's not euthanasia. It's not done for their benefit. It's murder. Imagine the outrage if humans who weren't being adopted were killed. It's no different for other animals.
People spend money on war rather than helping other animals. Healthcare should be socialised, like humans have. Caring for other animals isn't a chore, it's a duty and privilege.
Fireworks and other explosions are evil. Cats, dogs, birds, other animals get absolutely terrified by fireworks. Causing such intense, unending fear is unjustifiable.
Littering's disgusting. Other animals have to walk on that floor, and right next to your rubbish. They don't want to do that. Don't be selfish.
Balloons, Chinese lanterns, glitter, sequins, and microbeads don't decompose. They stay in the environment, and end up being swallowed by other animals.
Don't say "in the doghouse" like it's some bad place to be, that's ok for dogs, but not humans. That's disgusting. Dogs belong in a normal house, with their families.
Experimenting on other animals is evil. How dare you cause such immense suffering and murder. You're birthing them to torture them. What a miserable existence. That constant, unending torture is unimaginable for most people.

“Maybe four feet!” That kid reminded me of a time when I was in elementary school; I was interviewed by a reporter about the 25th anniversary of our school, and I was quoted in the newspaper saying “it takes about 20 minutes to walk from one end of it to the other”😂

That's so Cool! I have a fairly young Black Rat Snake "Snaky" that I'm so glad is living under my deck. He/She occasionally pops up onto the deck to "Suntan" and so long as I don't get too close, just hangs out! I hope he/she stays under my deck, and keeps the annoying rodents under control!

I just returned from a business trip to Cary, North Carolina for 5 days with 2 of my colleagues. We packed our poles to do some fishing after work at Crabtree lake. Walking back to the car, I saw the head of a black rat snake sticking out of the tall grass next to a path. Caught her before she could disappear into the grass and handled her for a few minutes. Normally catch bull snakes I encounter when fishing back home, so it was nice to find a rat snake again after more than 10 years.
That's so cool that you've seen this snake many times over the years.i had a timber rattlesnake at a den not far from me I first saw in April 1996,it had a large scar on it's back so I called it Scarback, it was a large male and I saw it on and off at that den over the years usually in mid to late April at spring emergence, it usually left the den shortly after emerging from hibernation, it really made me sad when I found it hit on a state forest road in October 2018,it was heading back to its den from its summer foraging area and it was definitely the largest timber rattlesnake in that small population,

(You just take an overhead picture of her next to an object you can measure later- like a shoe - and then you can determine her length from the photo.)
just had a good 6' black rat snake on my porch....absolutely in awwe just watching her....very docile....all I could think of was she's at least 6' long and has lived long enough to get that long. Just hope she sticks around, where it's safe ;)

The next time I see one of these snakes at our disc golf course or around the woods behind our home, Im going to attempt to handle it..I've always known that they are calm and don't pose a threat to humans in general, but most aren't aware that they are so tame that you would think that this wild snake is your pet....Also, these snakes (or it may be king snakes which look similiar) will prey on copperheads and I was unfortunately bitten by one playing disc golf ten years ago and was hospitalized for three days as a result, so any snake that place a venomous snakes on the menu, I'm all for it! Dope video!

Wow! Im An NC Bio teacher, Ive Only seen a couple near that size here. A near identical rat snake at Linville Falls and A timber rattler in South Pisgah near the Pink beds. Little shorter but thicker.
Wonderful video, Ben! I love when the kids give educational tips. Just yesterday I saw one of these in the St. Louis area, and I have a couple of questions for you. Are the Western Ratsnake and Black Ratsnake the same? Also how can you tell the males from the females? You seem to be able to tell immediately at first glance. I'd love to learn more about snakes in order to get over my innate fear of seeing them in wild places (aka THEIR home).

Yes. At first everyone was guessing someone had let their pet loose after the winter and he was going to kill someone.
I found your video to get an idea of what they look like in motion because, while a black snake has been shedding its skin in my basement for years, I've never seen the snake itself. Mine is not Bertha size, only 64 inches this year, but a respectable size. My former feral cat was very interested in this video, I think he has met a snake or two.

Just caught a 4 footer at the flea market. Was a rescue....group of ppl were gonna kill her. I took her home and released her in the attic. Hope she hangs around. Best ratter ever!

Nice one man, she's a beauty. I've caught a few about her size but I've seen some a whole lot bigger. I saw an 8 footer and one I know was pushing 10 in South Carolina, it was on the news and everybody was freaking out because they weren't sure of the species due to the size but I knew instantly it was a black rat.
We have them here in Southwest mi. Here in Sodus, mi. Every yr we see their shredded skin and once in awhile we actually see them. Today9-7-21 we saw a coiled up one next to our house.

I wonder if these snakes are more chill in NC because of their history with man or because of something else, because the one I picked up with a stick from my shed here in southern Illinois where it was hunting for mice and transferred to the field in front of my house did not seem so friendly. It cocked back and snapped at me when I approached it.
I also had a nest of Robbins on the side of my house and one night I came home from work I saw a black rat snake climbing up to eat them so I let nature take it’s course, maybe the Robbin will learn to be smarter with it’s nest...
It was amazing to see how clever the snake was though, how it carefully climbed up the conduit and positioned itself to eat the chicks.
I know some people hate a story like that but it’s immature of them, because God made animals to eat each other and it’s perfect.
Well every individual snake will act differently as well, I've handled some rat snakes that have been aggressive and nippy. Yeah I agree, God wouldn't have designed ecosystems if they were inherently 'evil' or something.
Nice commentary. While hiking the Appalachian Trail in Virginia in June 2023, I saw three all-black snakes, and they didn't look alike. One was skinny with a white belly and 3 feet long on the ground. The second was jet black and 4 feet long on the ground; it had a larger head. The third was up in a tree, super shiny slick skin, 7 feet long with with big body and a segmented large head. Everybody I showed the pictures to said they were all black rat snakes. When I blew up the picture to show the head of the big snake in the tree, people either went silent or said: "I don't know what you got there." Only two people insisted the big snake in the tree was a black rat snake and said that the picture had an optical illusion of the head, which I would disagree with. I saw many snakes on the AT starting in Georgia going NOBO.

I saw two that were around 8’-9’ and as big around as a radiator hose! Saw a 6’ last week.

We have a lot of gray rat snakes. Have one that lives in my flower bed and is very tame.
The biggest black snake i ever seen was in blowing rock, nc. It had been catching rats on our family farm for years and was atleast 8ft long and as big around as a softball.

I have one that's around 5-1/2 feet long; he/she (not sure how to sex snakes) was in my kayak shed, then moved into my garage with a friend, and is now hanging out in the insulation in my basement ceiling. I'm in upstate NY between hundreds of acres of organic farms and with wetlands and streams, so plenty to feed my own Big Bertha!

In Indiana many of our black rat snakes are more aggressive and I have seen a few quite a bit bigger than that. One in particular crossing the road was so long I thought it couldn't be a snake and must be a black hose until it slithered off.
Look how calm! I've only ever seen Texas rat snakes, and they're exactly the opposite of this; they bite a lot, they dash away as soon as they see you coming towards them. You'd never be able to just hold one for a video without it (understandably) darting in every direction at once, let alone drape one across three children worth of hands and have it sit there. Cool to see that other subspecies are so different in personality.

No, this one is a resident of a pond in Central NC!
Yesterday while removing an old roofing in my basement I ran across “big Bertha” . I was shocked because I have video surveillance 24/7 on multiple cameras and never saw her. Upon inspection I found a hole in my siding approx 10 ft from where I found her. She was very docile and generally cooperated with the removal process. Frankly I would have left it I place but the wife and kids would be terrified of a face to face.
These guys are definitely experts as popping up unexpectedly!
I’ve seen one that big in my yard in Connecticut. I live on wetlands. I’m terrified of them but would never hurt them.
What part of NC are you in? I'm in Cleveland County, I've caught one black rat snake that might be as large as Bertha. It was caught, and released unharmed. And it was probably at least six feet long, I'm 6'2", and holding the head beside my head, the tail was still on the floor!
My family lives in the foothills and I go to school in Raleigh. Dang, that sounds like it was a monster rat snake!
One about 7ft was in my yard yesterday. And one 5ft today.
Looks almost like one I caught roughly 3 months ago, we did some rough measurement, came to 5’ 4”, nowhere near as big as Big Bertha, but still.

Back in 1976 my first husband found me a female black rat snake in a pet store in San Diego County California. She was easily 5 feet. At that time, the only snakes in pet stores were wild caught or Columbian red tail boa‘s or, you had to go catch them yourself and stick with local species. I enjoyed my rat snake for many years she was very sweet had only one weird habit and that was she refused to eat anything but eggs. She did thrive on those. Ultimately I did lose her possibly to old age. She was a bit scarred up and had mouth rot when we got her and we were lucky enough to find a vet that treated exotics. He said she had probably been bitten by live feed her rats hence the scarring & refusal to eat even pre killed rats.

8 1/2 foot blk rat snake I caught when I was 8 y/o, bit me all to hell but I wasn't letting go! I found out later in life they are actually and typically not aggressive but I think I grabbed her up so quick she was probably freaked out
They say they only live 15 years in the wild... Honestly though, I think it's longer in a North Carolina environment... They are huge. The only predator to them are vehicles on the road and cold weather. I couldn't imagine any native NC birds that could eat these.
Yeah I think their only true predator once they are 6+ feet are people or large mammalian carnivores.
I just found a black rat snake around my chicken pen prob going for the rodents or eggs if I left them to get
Easily Bertha size. By far the longest wild native I've ever seen

The reason I got to this video is because I found a black snake as same as this one living under my house. Yes, it is in North Carolina. I carried away 150 yards away. Now I feel guilty and I hope the snake will find the way back home.
My caт did not react to that snake even. They probably already know each other. While I was carrying it, I dropped it on the ground, and then the snake and the cat started hissing each other. Very funny moment.
Neat! I'm sure it'll come back eventually if it liked your house enough, don't beat yourself up about moving it such a short distance.
Searched for "largest rat snake" and found your video. Reason I searched? Because I have a 5-6+ one in my yard by the woods here in NJ right now that I believe I saw last year as well!
I wish I could post a picture - this one isn't quite as thick, but it looks about as long as the one in your video. I was able to sort of touch near the end of the tail, but she spun around and "rattled" her tail and didn't seem too happy. We have seen some garters as well including one that's very used to us hanging out near it by the garden.
Thanks for your informative videos! I'll eventually be brave enough to try and pick one up, but the ones by me all seem too skittish.
What tells you it’s the same snake? How can you tell?
I'm not 100% sure but it is the only massive black rat snake that I think can be supported by the meager amount of habitat available in my neighborhood.
There is a black snake sleeping on my porch window and I'm freaking out!😫

I caught an 8 ft. Black snake in Southern VA. It had just caught and was eating one of our young chickens. So I was able to pick it up then let it go. Don't kill black snakes just copperhead and moccasins.
My gosh that's a beast, never seen an 8 footer before!

One of the things about getting older, is that my generation have seen things that your generation may never get to see. Sad!
That is very sad, hopefully by properly managing what's here now we can ensure that my children still get to see what I saw
@@TheWildReportOfficial Even when I was your age, my parents home only got one TV station, no cell phone, no computer, tablet, etc., etc. So, starting in elementary school and for years afterward, I spent a LOT of time exploring during the summer months, maybe not far from where you are now, i.e. SWVA. I have seen my share and then some of all kinds of critters, maybe even some that are no longer around. Have fun out there, but be careful too. Thumbs Up, on the video, and your message.

Bro….. I know personally 100’s of times over that Black Snakes are way more defensive then this. You have a rare Snake. She’s cool as hell. Hopefully she stays around. Once I saw you hand her to three children I knew she was not the norm.
I know I mentioned this on another video but if you want other herpers to seriously believe you found a large, calm, adult specimen like this in wild and that it's not a staged captive snake then:
1. Don't do those close up macro shots of the whole snake showing it has _zero_ scars or ticks/parasites lol real herpers know that's near impossible for a wild snake that old 😅
2. Also, highlighting that she's tame enough for children to hold adds to the likelihood of her being a pet. Big rat snakes in urban environments only get that big by having a strong defensive response to ward off would-be predators and having a healthy fear of humans due to the likelihood some ignorant/fearful person will kill them. Especially in well trafficked places such as a park where children play!
Nothing wrong with using staged captives, just try not to make it so obvious 😂 Seasoned herpers will pick up on it even if they can't quite put their finger on why the video feels disingenuous!
Shi I killed one the other day. I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to snakes. Well least I know next time not to kill it.

what is odd about snakes they do not want to bite or go after humans but i do know which animals do and that is dogs they bite more peeps than any snake go figure that out. and dogs can have rabies, not snakes....
