  • Back in August I was flipping tin at my house and found this beautiful neonate Speckled Kingsnake (Lampropeltis holbrooki). I didn’t get a ton of footage of it, because the storage space on my phone was filling up!
    Speckled Kingsnake info
Description: This species is black with yellow spots. They are non venomous, and are known for eating other snakes. Most people recognize these as kingsnakes, so they leave them alone.
Habitat: They can be found in a variety of habitat, such as heavy woodland, open prairie, and lowlands. They can also be found under flat rocks, tin, or in debris piles.
Prey: They feed on small rodents, lizards, and other snakes including venomous ones! They kill their prey by constriction. Speckled kingsnakes show a certain amount of immunity to venom, that is helpful when they prey on various venomous snakes.
Predators: Their eggs and young are vulnerable to local birds of prey, some carnivores, and other larger species of king snake.
    Size: 36 to 48 inches
Defense: In defense this species will sometimes bite, poop, and emit a foul smelling musk. They also will rattle their tails, imitating a rattlesnake. They will also attempt to flee, like most snakes will including venomous ones. I have never been bitten by any of the ones I’ve handled. They are usually pretty calm for the most part and in my experience they’d rather flee than bite.
Habits: They emerge from their winter den sites around mid- to late March. At this time, they can be seen basking in sunny spots, or foraging for their first meal of the year. Shortly after that, males begin to seek out females for breeding. In the summer they spend most of their time foraging for prey, hiding, and occasionally basking. As long as the temperature is warm enough, they will remain active. When the temperatures drop they will go into rock crevices or animal burrows until spring.
Breeding habits: Breeding takes place in the spring. Gravid females will lay their eggs towards the end of the summer, and hatching takes place in the fall. The snake in this video was found on August 30, so it was born a bit before fall.
State distribution: In Arkansas this species is found statewide. It is found in a variety of habitat, so it is often encountered by humans.

The speckled kings in AR can be so stunning. Love those little ones too. That tin! Bet that's going to be fun in the spring.

Smetlogik Speckleds are definitely one of my favorite snakes to find! I’m thinking about stacking more tin in that area too, that stack produced a few ringnecks, lizards, spiders, and this baby speckled king! So who knows what it’ll produce in the spring! Thanks for watching!

@@adventureswithsquatchy1400 heck yeah! I've found that having different layers of tin from 2-3 to only 1 piece of tin. Some in partial sun, etc... just gives you more opps for snakes depending on time of day, time of year kind of thing.

Yep, that’s true! I have a few areas on my property that I need to stack tin on pieces that are already there, and I need to create some new stacks too. I have 50 or 60 pieces that either aren’t being used or are in bad spots so I’ll have plenty of opportunities to find cool critters!
