Kudos for being one of the few guitar UA-camrs prepared to aim some deserved criticism at big forces in the scene. Fender may be pissed, but they might also do something about it - to the benefit of all their customers.
Fender’s such a garbage company it’s not even funny. Mustang bass reissues have an issue with the intonation screws where they strip particularly easily and don’t have any replacements. Fender outright refused to sell me a replacement or even send me specs. I literally had to hit a cnc shop to have a batch of replacements made. The things we put up with for tone
Mike mentioning the Custom Shop builder who is using the same spring gives me hope. It’s probably a corporate bureaucracy problem, trying to get a part in mass production approved for replacement, whereas the Custom Shop can use whatever they want.
After watching Rick Beato and friends test out lighter guage strings, I decided to install 8's on my new Am Pro II JM and love them! I did try the 7's but they were too slinky for me. The Panorama system works great with the the 8's. Absolutely love the Am Pro 11 Jazzmaster. The only thing I might change on it is the upper slide switch to a toggle switch. I like to switch lead tones in the middle of songs and find the slide switch a little too hard to find while playing live.
Thanks for the follow-up to the video you did with Ryan. I needed to know about the grounding issue and to pay attention to the positioning of the spring. Cheers!!!
For those that don’t have access to a metal lathe, my coworker gave me the idea to chuck it up in a drill press and I can report that after about 5 minutes with an 8 inch Nicholson file you can successfully modify your existing collet to work with the spring. If you feel comfortable modifying an original part without a backup, that is.
Hi Mike, thanks for the update! Bought an AM Pro II back in late February and have been following all the Panorama related stuff since. I for one really like my 10 gauge strings, so the stock spring is not a huge issue, but some extra range sure wouldn't hurt. I did get the yellow spring a few weeks back, however when I took the unit off the guitar, I was surprised to see that Fender used a completely different spindle on mine. Not sure how widespread this is and it might just be a singular or very limited particularity due to supply chain issues (my guitar also came with an entire set of full height tuners - no staggered ones, likely for the same reason). The spindle on it is way more bulbous, so the yellow spring does not fit over it at all - not even partially like it did in your video with Ryan. I for one don't feel like it's worth the hassle to modify the original part, but would definitely love to find either a slimmer spindle that fits the spring, or an original sized spring with correct tension. Until then, I fear that my dive bombs will only be partially sick :(
Hey Mike! I’ve just done the drill chuck/lathe hack method for filing down the spindle and it worked brilliantly, though worth noting that it’s super helpful for your drill to be able to go backwards to prevent the screw coming away from the spindle. I tried drilling out the centre of the replacement spring but ended up warping it considerably and would say that I’ve definitely weakened it to the point that the stock spring is actually a little stronger, I’ll be ordering another one and hopefully a fresh spring with the filed spindle should work a treat! Just thought I’d share here so people don’t ruin their springs by drilling them (albeit badly on my part), spindle filing is 100% the way to go!
Thanks for the tip Jack, I'll take your advice. I just received my yellow spring today from China, and looking forward to fitting it to my new JM Pro 2.
Fender does make a "split top" tuner like vintage that fits the standard 2-pin tuners. It's called the Classic Gear tuner and I replace all my Fender tuners with them. The even look more vintage with classic Kluson style "bean knobs"
I love this! Big thanks to Ryan and YOU for all the work and time and sharing you’ve invested. I’d been following this and thought of things that eventually you addressed, like the Thimble (was it not modded on Ryan’s?) and making spring ends flat. Ya thats almost as bad as him playing a Gibson instead. Pretty frustrating that we all shelled out this $ for pro 2 and they can't just shoot a 5 dollar spring and an apology to their customers. They got their $$ and I guess that's all they care about.
Yeah but if it works at the manufacturer prescribed string gauge is it actually a problem? If you install higher gauge strings on a Strat you have to adjust the springs unless you *want* the tremolo to float. I don’t understand why it’s such a big surprise that a Jazzmaster would need more spring to control bigger strings. Like yeah maybe Fender could install a stiffer spring, or maybe the amount of tension in the tremolo bar with the factory gauge springs is exactly what they want. Changing string gauge *is* a modification, and frequently other modifications need to be made to facilitate other modifications.
@@michaelw6277 I get where you’re coming from here, but I don’t necessarily agree with your logic. Adjusting tremolo springs can be done with just a Phillips head screw driver, and doesn’t require any replacement parts - it’s effectively a setting, not a modification. While I agree that technically changing string gauge is a modification, I think it’s one that a player expects to be possible (with some setup required of course). Great video and even better playing. Quick question, would you also recommend the C. Novak JM-V and JM-Fat pickups for pro 2, or do you think the JM-90 and JM-180 are best considering the tap mode on the bridge pickup? I appreciate your feedback. Happy holidays

Hi Mike. As a fellow Pro II owner I've been following the spring fix with interest. I have another issue - finding an aftermarket pickguard that fits. I've ordered a couple, but the bridge drillings aren't right. Is the aftermarket you have from Decoboom a Pro II-specific model?
My JM Pro 2 seems to work okay with 11-49s, but 12-54s are my what I want to use. I just got the yellow spring yesterday and curious what other peeps have done to deal with the spindle issue.
Do you have a link to the replacement tuners you installed? My AM2 is on its way to me right now, and I’d like to make those same mods right away before I get too attached to it!
I am curious if the yellow spring plus 9s will change the amount of dive you can get. The original spring went down to F#, right? In theory, since you have more torque on anchored side of the tremolo, you should be able to loosen the strings even further.
What are the physical dimensions of this spring? Just from looking at it I feel really confident that I could find a few cylinder head valve springs from different cars that would work
I also changed my pickups on my Pro 2 Jazz to the JM90/180 combo. Huge improvement over the Vmods! More tone, less mud. But yes, changing the volume pot to 1meg will also be my next step. I am contemplating on changing the panorama for a Descendant though. Somehow I don't connect to the panorama. I don't need deep dives on a Jazz and the whole thing feels wonky to me.
@@deshawn4077 It plays great and it looks stunning. You don't have to change the pickups, they could work fine for your purpose. I always swap pickups on all my guitars anyway. Now I played with it more I think I'll keep the panorama tremolo though. But yeah, I also figured along the way that I might be better off with a Japanese Fender. Then I can change whatever I like and would still not be paying US Fender prices. I've done that with a CIJ Jaguar and it's great.
I have a Pro 2 coming in, in a few days and I guess I should have no problems as I have been using 9's on my electric guitars for a long time (Strats, Super Strats, Teles). What are the advantages of using heavier strings on Jazzmasters? Thanks
On a Bass VI with the Panorama tremolo, would it be a good idea to go for the TL (blue Light load) spring instead of the TF (yellow Extremely Light) spring?
Bout to roll the dice on a panorama for a CV VI, read the VI spring transfered over is enough for some dude on the web, will be ordering a plan b. In other news, that end riff.... I know it, have known it but cant name it, stuck in my head now. Gonna be trying to place it til dawn now. It feels obvious but..
So I have been wanting to upgrade the trem on my J masic jazzmaster for a while and was looking at the Panorama as a possible choice. Now I recently had to switch to 10's from using 11's & 12's for a while because of hand pain issues. Do you think the Panorama stock spring is sufficient to use with a 10's or would I still need to upgrade the spring?
Good day sir, I just found yr channel & watched your review on the Pro 2. I had a Jag a long time ago & put 11's on because a friend told me that's what you put on Jag's & Jazzmasters. Now I can't remember why & I went through all yr vids & didn't find one to explain. Will you please tell me why?
Hey @puisheen, what will happen i you change the tone pot to 1meg? will it increase the brightness? No need to change the tone pot to 1meg as well? push pull tone pot is kinda hard to comeby.
I tend to prefer my amps on the dark side, so my Strange Audio Lux Plus or my Satellite Helion go great with my guitars. But I've gotten a lot of fun tones out of those Silver Panel Fender reissues just by rolling off the high end. Anything with a 15 usually works for me too, but I have to admit that I rarely keep up with what's readily available these days!
I checked the the JM 90 and it says it is a P-90 replacement for the Jazzmaster. In your video you said the JM 90 and 180 sound vintage. Do you mean vintage P-90 and not Jazzmaster?
Rad sounds and badass upgrade Mike! Random Q - do you have a vid or anywhere that shows what your signal chain looks like when you're running into Logic/Garageband like in this vid? I know there are pedals involved but would like to know more about what happens after pedalboard -> when it meets your PC :) Anyway, love the scratch guard, love the spring mod, love the pickups, love the uniqueness of this AmPro2 JM!! Kind of now finally diggin that blue burst color months later Hahaha
Is it normal that bridge pickup have noise but neck pickup is nicely silent? Rhythm mode is also noisy. Could it be bad grounding? With Boss NS-2 I need to have thresshold near max to filter it out which break sustain. Bought Pro 2 and been nice guitar else, wouldn't want to send it back to England (I live in Finland). Probably will just take it to local guitar workshop here unless would try to do it myself with soldering iron, connectivity check thingy and good energy by following the videos here.
Update: I revisited the tremolo and grounded the wire in that cavity properly. Also bit dragged out a blue wire from under bridge pickup. Working perfect now. \o/ Big thanks for the informative videos.
Ordered one, never got it... mailed them couple of times, they said I was too late with responding and letting them know it never arrived. Told them this wasn't the first time I mailed. They would send the spring again... Never arrived... gave up. So be careful.
Modern plates, I don't expect they will. This is definitely something to look out for with mid-'60s trems, though. It's one big reason why Woody made the Mastery vibrato plate so thick. I actually had to reshape the body plate of the '63 vibrato on my CFM Jag because it was collapsing in the middle, but nothing a little work with a rubber mallet couldn't fix
Also worth mentioning that the spring needs its ends sanded to metal (as you can see on mikes spring) or the trem will not ground.
Good note! This would be very frustrating to forget and have to disassemble👿
Are you ready to ditch your Am Pro 2 spring? I want it! I need it!
Go practice, bro

I am curious if the yellow spring plus 9s will change the amount of dive you can get. The original spring went down to F#, right? In theory, since you have more torque on anchored side of the tremolo, you should be able to loosen the strings even further.
Need one of those spindles ...
That pickguard reminds me of the opening sequence from "Saved by the Bell". 🤣🤣🤣
Kelly Kapowski was smoking hot though.
what is the model number of your tuners bushing ? I love your channel!!!!!
Lookin jacked dude.
Anyone have info on the Gotoh tuners referenced at the end? It’s one of the only things not linked in the description.
Worth buying the guitar even with having to change out things?
@@deshawn4077 It plays great and it looks stunning. You don't have to change the pickups, they could work fine for your purpose. I always swap pickups on all my guitars anyway. Now I played with it more I think I'll keep the panorama tremolo though. But yeah, I also figured along the way that I might be better off with a Japanese Fender. Then I can change whatever I like and would still not be paying US Fender prices. I've done that with a CIJ Jaguar and it's great.
Did you keep the wiring for the Pro 2 when changed pickups?
@@deshawn4077 Yes
How would I ask a guitar tech to swap V-Mods cwith Novaks and retain Amp Pro II wiring? Just curious. Thanks!
new upload on a Friday, W
I have a Pro 2 coming in, in a few days and I guess I should have no problems as I have been using 9's on my electric guitars for a long time (Strats, Super Strats, Teles). What are the advantages of using heavier strings on Jazzmasters? Thanks
On a Bass VI with the Panorama tremolo, would it be a good idea to go for the TL (blue Light load) spring instead of the TF (yellow Extremely Light) spring?
Morning everyone - does anyone know anyone stocking these springs in the UK? Thanks
Mike, have you tried a G and L doheny? Leo's 2nd jazzmaster I suppose...
Sweet pickguard!
Nice work! 💜
Rosie!!!!
I have a FCS jazzmaster I really want to put a panorama on. Wish fender would get off their ass already on this.
Which style Kluson tuners are those?
Good day sir,
I just found yr channel & watched your review on the Pro 2.
No need to change the tone pot to 1meg as well? push pull tone pot is kinda hard to comeby.
the yellow doesn't quite go with the blue but not noticeably. it's good that you found a replacement!
haha totally, the clash is a bit much. Thankfully it's hidden!
amazing! could you give any amp recommendations that pair well with a jazzmaster?
Almost anything Orange.
@@Puisheen Thanks for the quick response! Been looking at one of those fender custom pro reverbs for a while so thats good news!
I know there are pedals involved but would like to know more about what happens after pedalboard -> when it meets your PC :)
Anyway, love the scratch guard, love the spring mod, love the pickups, love the uniqueness of this AmPro2 JM!! Kind of now finally diggin that blue burst color months later Hahaha
Well, praise Kevin.
Nice!! Also what guitar rack is that?
Where are these links you’re talking about?
Hello, if I bought that spring, can I just pop in to the Jazzmaster stock as is or do I have to drill a Spring Out in Center?
That definitely sounds like a wiring issue!
Oh wait just caught the reply. Good going!
Are these springs yet available??
Can you bend with 10s and 11s?
So, how much is this now??
Hey mike! Besides fender/squier is there a jazzmaster type guitar with the right style of trem and tone circuit?
Would the yellow spring work with the squier Bass VI?
At the price you pay that guitar, one would have thought that such a fault would not happen.
Ordered one, never got it... mailed them couple of times, they said I was too late with responding and letting them know it never arrived. Told them this wasn't the first time I mailed. They would send the spring again... Never arrived... gave up. So be careful.
Curious if the vibrato plate will warp over time..?
Modern plates, I don't expect they will. This is definitely something to look out for with mid-'60s trems, though. It's one big reason why Woody made the Mastery vibrato plate so thick. I actually had to reshape the body plate of the '63 vibrato on my CFM Jag because it was collapsing in the middle, but nothing a little work with a rubber mallet couldn't fix
how can i contact robert about a spindle👌
Would this help a similar problem with MIJ Hybrid Jazzmasters?
What fuzz do you use in intro?
Drop the arm workout vid already

So cool
