- Fender has a new Vibrato Unit on its American Professional II Jazzmasters, It looks about the same from the outside but there are major differences inside. I compare the specs and make measurements against my AVRI & Descendant vibratos for a revealing graph. Mike Adams (puisheen) was kind enough to provide me with measurements of his Mastery equipped JM and Vintage 1961 JM as well. Go check out mikes channel here / beatriceandbernard

Hell yeah we'll dive bomb these ofsets! Ideal vibrato for a Pantera surf cover band.
Cowboys from SoCal.
@The Tired Horizon I love to think of the intro of “Hollow” by Pantera, but instead of it being performed on some searing harmonized guitar, it would be hummed by some 50s doo-wop group! hilarious but I bet it works!
Reign in Blood with full Kerry King solo can now be done on a Jazzmaster \m/ \m/
I've never played Pantera in a surf style, but I was in a surf band that played Metallica's "Enter Sandman".
Gosh darn it I hope I can buy this trem separately because I got a Jag like 3 months ago and would love to install this one
ME TOO.
Still waiting... Considering getting a mastery trem, but been waiting for this one.
They better sell those panorama terms bc I'll buy 2 instantly
If they don’t sell them they are stupid. It’s a smart design and the most drastic change to the offset trem yet.
@@60CycleHumcast Out of curiosity, have you thought about asking them if they will? Plenty of your viewers are wondering the same thing, and they might be more inclined to answer you than a bunch of random Jacks and Jills? Just a thought of course, they could still be waiting to see how many people would be interested so I might send an email anyway.
@@dusty9438 I’m going to send my fender contact this video link Monday and I’ll ask then. He’s a marketing guy so he might not have that info. Or he might have to be secretive about it. I’ll ask though.

@@60CycleHumcast ask them via IG, they DO answer sometimes
I’ve never even considered a Jazzmaster, but I’m fascinated by watching your videos
the PU's are total whimp!
I just got an American Original Jazzmaster a couple weeks ago, and after getting it all set up to my liking, it's a fantastic (and gorgeous!) guitar. It has the play-feel of a strat, but a totally different tone, and when that tremolo+bridge are set up correctly, it's a real pleasure to use. Acoustically the guitar has an amazing resonance to it, which is partly from the string length between the trem and bridge, but the Jazzmaster pickups give it a very different kind of beef from your typical strat too. It can go from super-bright-chimey to fat and dark.
@@Paul_Lenard_EwingSquier JM pickups are kinda wimpy, but I once played a Japanese made jazzmaster that sounded HUGE like humbuckers almost
that peterson strobostomp is an amazing tuner, it actually makes me like tuning
Guess you mean centimeters.... the Metric system...you need to be brought up with it! Love your show all the way from sweden!
Even though you mess up mm and cm I have to thank you for using the metric system. A lot of UA-camrs forget the rest of the world. Way to go!
Thanks for the deep dive into deep diving with the Panorama. This is exactly (well within a centimeter or millimeter, give or take!) the info I wanted to know about the new system. You care about just the right nerdy guitar stuff for me (does it drip, does it wobble, etc.). And you picked the absolute best color for the new Pro II's.
Excellent video! Well over a year ago, I replaced the crappy trem that came with my then brand new Haze Jazzmaster with an AVRI and what a difference! I still had to fix the floppy arm, so instead of hitting it with a hammer, I used a typical small worm geared hose clamp slipped onto the segmented part. Then tightened it down with a socket wrench (better than using a screwdriver). You can tighten the clamp down to as much arm resistance you like then remove it. After playing nearly daily and occasionally removing/reinstalling the arm during this period of time, it has not changed in it's resistance to movement and I use it often in my nearly daily playing. Very happy with it now.
I dig your scientific approach to the matter! Someone had to tackle those important questions!
I just ordered an AM Pro II JM in Mystic Surf Green today after watching your vids. So heckin excited!
I actually paused the video to go grab the vintage style unit I had in the garage. Now I want the new panorama one!!
My only concern is the introduction of lubrication maintenance to the new Panarama Trem system. The traditional systems were designed specifically to have no lube maintenance requirement, where as the new hinged system will undoubtedly require periodic lubrication, especially for surf guitar players, which probably means the removal of the trem from the body. Not a huge deal to some, but an added pain nonetheless. Also, small screws can only be removed and re-tightened in wood so many times before yet another maintenance step [of repairing wood threads] comes into play.
Anyway, once an engineer always an engineer. Just my two cents.
I do, however, love that new model!
Thanks for doing that video!
Bigsbys use similar hinge mechanics and I’ve never one had to lube one or heard of anyone having to lube one.
@@60CycleHumcast Bigsby’s are needle bearings packed in grease. Is that what the new one is? It’s looked pretty small in your pick, I assumed it was a bushed hinge. (?)
@@surfbumnate1 I honestly don’t know exactly how it’s put together. But it didn’t seem like something that would require lubricant
@@60CycleHumcast I’ve been looking for some specs or pics online, haven’t come across anything yet. Just curious, I guess. Seems like an awesome guitar, I love the sound of it.
I find the whole thing pretty stupid with Trems like the Vegatrem the tech is there to do things right so when it comes to old model Fenders that people still enjoy why not just leave them with the original spec? They will not sell any less.Simply make completely new guitars with modern specs.
Wow... I was almost going to pull a trigger on a Descendant, but your video totally changed my mind! I wasn't expecting it to have that less range as the standard bridge.... I really hope that fender will sell those Panoramas as replacements/upgrades.
Good luck to fender trying to sell any offsets at a premium without this trem moving forward 🤣🤣🤣
Seriously
Right, wow. It's that good? I am intrigued...
@Northern Dirt what does that mean? The arm pops in and out.
I stick with the original design, Im pretty conservative with guitars and feel so used to it. I like the work they put into this though!
@Northern Dirt if I understood correctly that’s just where you adjust how tight it stays in. The arm still just pops in and out.
Dudddee! I’ve been waiting for this comparison to be explained better. Great content! Thanks!
This kind of test is right up my street, excellent stuff dude!
Awesome comparison ! I Like you used centimetres (even if you say millimetres, i'd have no clue using imperial, it confuses me so i'd be all over the place in namings haha).
Wow Ryan. That was useful consumer information investigation. The new unit is quite intriguing indeed. The only place I've ever heard of the Descendant unit is when you've mentioned it with your Squier. I wonder if there's any more tests you could do, you could even measure them in your Big Millimetres!
Thank you! Very informative. It would have been nice to also check what vibrato detunes the strings the less.
Best analysis of the panorama
I like that the drippy reverb is ON for this test
Great video. All of us non-Americans appreciate you using Metric :)
"Colette" 😂. Like Toni Collette?
Joking aside, I tried the panorama for a bit but went back to the original on my main JM. I have mine set up for classic surf and am so used to it that I just prefer that feel. 20 years of playing Jags and JMs in surf bands has seemed to create a permanent muscle memory for me. I also found the panorama to just not be very surfy sounding tbh. The beauty of the original is the subtle but easy to control vibrato. The panorama is hard to get exact half step vibratos on, which is THE sound of that classic 60s vibrato.
Thankfully I have never had any of the issues that many people have with Jazzmasters. If it's set up properly, they're perfect machines. But I get that not everyone will have the skill to set them up right. They're tricky.
The new Jazzmaster trem is definitely the superior one of them all. In time, they'll be putting those Panorama trems on all their Jazzmasters and Jaguars in the Fender brand. Poor Squier will just get the old school version.
Or maybe some smart indie guitarist will ask for it on his signature Squier first!
@@scotmark If they did, it'd be the most expensive Squier, probably coming in at nearly $700. May want to wait a few years for the cost to come down first.
@@DoppelgangerShockwave You're probably right, we'll have to wait until it costs only 2¢ extra to manufacturer rather than $2.
@@scotmark I think Fender is doing things right finally, so I hope in the near future cost does go down so this trem becomes a staple rather than an exclusive.
In a Squier J. Mascis it goes down to slighty flatter than B (but closer to B than to Bb). And from E to D needs almost 2cm of tremolo action.
Jazzmaster is the last on my list, really liking the Panorama coming from a Floyd perspective, it is more responsive and has more range. Thanks!
Thanks for this video! I think I'm definitely going with the Panorama over the Descendant.
Now you gotta do one with the MIM and MIJ trem systems too! Lol. Interesting results here!
i wish you had demonstrated the pull-up capability as well...the range of pitch-raising capability.
Ryan: "You can do that? Oh, yeah, I keep forgetting I can unlock that button." ;-)
Seems like a definite improvement. I just wish they would do something to shore up their traditional bridges on their mid and lower end models. Closer tolerances on the post ferrules and a steeper break angle to the trem will do it. If they can’t do that then they just need to make TOM style bridges standard.
I would like to try one of these on some of my other offsets. I would want to change things on my main jazzmaster - I don't bend with the arm more than a semitone, so happy with what it came with. I think there is room for both!
You wait ages for an improvement to the Jazzmaster trem and then three of them come along at once.
But seriously, did they figure out 60 years ago they wanted to move those two screws but were holding off until they thought of another improvement to bundle it with?
Great video, super useful and really interesting, thanks!
Wow. These are gonna be sold out if they release. I’d love to put one on my JMJM, can’t stand the arm always falling down
Thanks, you answered all my questions. You need to be on Fenders payroll now my dude😂🤔
Don’t tell me! Tell fender! Lol
@@60CycleHumcast Nooooh! Please stick to finding neat guitars I can afford!
Dude your tshirt makes me soooo happpy
I have to have one of these babys. I was there about 5 seconds into the first vid after you pulled it out of the case. They have to start selling those trems too because I have a couple other guitars that are going to have them installed asap.
Excellent , very informative. Great job.
Super cool and informative, great vibe. Thank you
Great video, the new vibrato system looks great! Mmm the new American Jazzmaster also seems amazing...
I agree that, Peterson makes the best tuners. I have an original Peterson digital strobe, It's gigantic with this blue silicon type cover.
It gets the job done
Ryan - great video and explanation of the new system. I have one on order - just have to be patient for a few months! BTW the word "collet" is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable, not the second - it's not French. And what you call a "nub" at the base of the tremelo arm is probably better described as a "detent." Sorry to nitpick - all in good fun!
Nice video Ryan, you beat me to this one 😝
Hail Fender, more is always better!
Thank you for making this video. Illustrating the objective, salient differences between the new, the old and the aftermarket really helps one to appreciate what the Panorama offers over either the old and the aftermarket.
BTW, where’d you get your T-shirt sir? I don’t see that one on your T-shirt & Coffee Mug merch page.
Everyone wants to know about that shirt! lol

@@60CycleHumcast Thanks man. I’m betting that the rest of the Praise & Worship Team I belong to will dig it too.
I think you just destroyed the mastery/decendant is an upgrade argument! Pretty sure my vintage trem units make it a smidge lower than your American reissues but splitting hairs. The new fender unit looks awesome! Que everyone selling off their masterys and decendants lol
Hopefully fender sells these units soon
@@60CycleHumcast I really hope so. I just at least want try one in person soon
My American Professional Jag has a screw in arm. Find it weird that they went from collet to a screw in. Although this looks like a vast overall improvement. I’ve got a Mastery bridge currently but if fender releases this I may have to rethink buying a Mastery or Descendant vibrato.
Is that inside plate that holds the strings the same shape/dimensions on the original jazzmaster trems vs the panorama? Or is it different to allow for the pivot system to be fitted?
If they are the same, someone should be able to manifacture a stand alone replacement pivot system. It would only require a few holes to be drilled in the inside plate for installation.
The nice thing about centimetres and millimetres is you can just multiply or divide by ten, so conversion is easy.
Well, crap. I just bought my first Jazzmaster a couple of months ago, and then they come out with this improved tremolo?! I sure hope they sell these individually. It's already the perfect guitar for me, but this upgrade would make it even better!
The panorama has been a definite improvement on the stock trem in my Mexican lacquer Jag. Unfortunately it has developed an annoying squeak at the collet. Any ideas?
That round collette (or whatever it's called) looks like you could put a hose clamp around it
It's good to know that you don't have to replace it on a brand new guitar. But for all your other replacements, go MASTERY.
Do the same measurements and post in the header text or your chart a comparison to a Strat and a Floyd Rose. Any other trems you may have around there? SG vibrola, Harley Benton, Glarry, Teisco,...
That’s actually a fun idea. I’ll do that. Too bad I don’t have a Floyd right now. Maybe I’ll borrow one.
@@60CycleHumcast I later realized my Strat can go to floppy strings when I dumped the arm and a Floyd is famous for letting the strings go full spaghetti noodle mode. But the other bridge styles are still interesting. I did put a second note about using this guitar to play Eruption or other 'gotta have a Floyd to play that' type songs. Up-bends? Can it float?
Perhaps ... Find out the other channels that got this trem system and do a combined video of everyone playing typical Floyd-needed songs with it. Cross-over content for everyone. Where is the wall that stops someone from using this trem and still thinks they need a Floyd?
hope you can get after market. I've been asking for a henged trem for JM for years, and thought mastery dropped the ball by not doing it
An octave down?! I need one so much!
Thanks for the video.
For once, Fender seems to have heard their customers and they updated their trem.
One question not related to JM trem, what is the guitar between the greenisg SG and the golden strat
The brand / name of the sunbusrt 3 pickups guitar
Cheers !
Is the Panorama more stable as far as tuning is concerned? Thank you.
Are these on the professional I, or did they start on the professional II?
Question that might have an obvious answer, my trem arm makes a rattle when I push down (not when I pull up) it’s really annoying do I just need to tighten the collet? This is the new Panoramic trem
Very good video Ryan👍, what's the setup on the J. Mascis?
I dont have a J. Mascis
Any updates on when Fender will sell the Panorama vibrato as a replacement part? Do you happen to know if they will fit on Squier CV Jags? Thank you!
they should be able to fit on anything that takes a JM trem. Rumor is they will be available as a part sometime in 2021 but no one knows that for sure.
I have a '59 Jazz and the strings could never touch those screws; the action would be too low to play the guitar. Also the old ones have a slide switch to turn it into a hardtail. The new hinge could cause a squeak.
I like the american vintage trem so much that I say don't mess with a good thing. JMHO
heard name of channel. instant like!
PLEASE, this pickups.. show them to us Ryan, the first set were not jazzmaster pickups, it was sort of Strat pick ups disguised as jazzmaster pick ups..
Cheers! :)

The fender engineers are a smart bunch
Sorry it took me so long to subscribe. I do watch the video and I enjoy the hate comment rants on Instagram. Haha. I'm only now getting into Jazzmasters and I'm looking to mod one of my two new J Mascis JMs. Starting... with the vibrato and the bridge.

so is the panorama tremolo basically getting into Stratocaster tremolo territory?
Which one is closest to bigsby feel?
Great job with this. Looks like you could possibly change string tension?
What do you mean?
@@60CycleHumcast if the angle to the trem changes in relation to the bridge, when you go back n forth, are you noticing FEEL changes in the swing or it. If the feel changes, the tension changed ....

The center screw tightens the spring changing the angle of the bar. You will need to re adjust your tuning after (obviously)
